  • After practicing with a local club for a few months, they thought I was good enough to compete in the Icebreaker HEMA tournament in Minnesota. I didn't win anything but it was a fantastic experience! Being able to fight people outside of the club is most certainly beneficial, as one gets complacent and familiar with the other member's styles and techniques after a while.
If you watch closely you can see me once in a while, wearing most of my 14th century harness.

It was definitely a good time! Luckily the amount of HEMA information on the internet is growing, and it seems to me that you're well on your way to practicing it independently of a club.
      I do my best haha

Living Manuscript yeah it's called the old sword play by Alfred Hutton

Before you buy that, I think there is a version online (www.thearma.org/pdf/OldSwordPlay.pdf). If you're interested, I would recommend Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly Art of the Longsword (www.amazon.com/Sigmund-Ringecks-Knightly-Art-Longsword/dp/1581606885). I've used it in the past and found it very useful and informative. It's a little more contemporary to the medieval era, which I appreciate.

Awesome. I really love watching stuff like this. It takes me back to my first time sparing in Tae Kwan Do. You can see the mistakes but also get a feel for what works and doesn’t work. And looking back after a short period of time is fun too. Because you’d be surprised how quickly you can improve over time.

Thank you. Being able to watch yourself after the fact is definitely very helpful to improving form, technique, etc. I wish I'd been able to record myself when I started just so that I could compare between then and now.

Living Manuscript there’s been so many times that I’ve looked back at sparing practice in my memory and thought “oh I could have done that!” Or “I should have done this” but in the moment you always in my opinion know better. I’m the moment you are able to gage more what your able to get away with and if your opponent is ready or expecting you to do a certain thing.
