Here are the numbers: Coachmen Outfitter 208BHS - 6,000 pounds GVWR (3,948 pounds dry) & 516 pounds Hitch Weight.
2016 Ford Explorer w/ 3.5 Ecoboost - 5,000 pound max towing w/class 3 hitch and WDH, 500 pound max tongue weight (including the weight of the WDH). Payload is 1,259 pounds. Cargo in the trailer, including water, propane, camping and living accessories, etc. will have to be limited to 1000 pounds. So a loaded trailer will have a tongue weight of 600 pounds at minimum with the WDH; add the occupants, plus typical cargo and this vehicle is pushing maximum payload, maximum tongue weight and maximum trailer weight all at the same time. If you add any of the following, you are asking for trouble: cross winds, being passed by trucks while going 65+, passing freight trucks, mountains or any grade (up or down). Don't do this folks. Know your weights and capacities and don't exceed them.

@@businessninja1913 I would think so. The smallest boat is 1850 lbs plus the trailers for it. Boats aren't nearly as big as a trailer, which can act like a sail. Big boats can be just as bad though

But i stayed at or under 65mph. Just gotta be smart. I wouldn’t recommend it though. But if ur gonna do it make sure the weight distributed as best as possible

I have a 2021 GMC elevation that has a max 920lbs tougue weight with a max 9,200 tow rating the truck has a max 7,000 lbs. The camper max 7,550 lbs. The truck has max 1870 lbs cargo capacity. You would subtract that weight from your 9200 lbs max towing and that would be your true towing capacity. More accurate go to a weight station. That's how I got the numbers but we don't put anymore then 1000lbs cargo in the truck add the tougue weight which is in the 1,000 lbs rest is passenger and in the bed. And the camper maybe another 800 lbs cargo my tanks are empty except for 2 to 3 gallons in the black & gray tanks each.. we don't boon dock so less weight. So we're way under the trucks capability. But it's good to go to a weight station for piece of mine to double check witch I did. PS: Dry weight of the camper is 5050 lbs so another 800lbs that's less then 6,000 lbs towing. I used 11% for the tougue weight. It came to less then 600 lbs. This camper is 29' long from hitch to bumper. PSS: keep in mine people this is a 1500 truck and even tho the weight is right the length might be to long for the truck. Personally 29' is as long as I would go because of laws of physics. Simply put you have a sailboat back there and a good stiff wind or tractor trailer pushes you around. And that 1500 would get pushed around. Anything longer I would go 3/4 or 1 ton on a truck. My personal opinion. Just food for thought on you newbies.

Been towing travel trailers for over 30 years. I learned early to never exceed 80% of my tow vehicle's towing capacity and especially it's payload capacity. Pushing the limits of you tow vehicle is a recipe for disaster. I tow a similar size camper with my 2019 Ford Expedition Limited with the Max Tow and Cargo Package. It is rated to tow 9300lbs and has a Payload Capacity of 1530lbs. That keeps me in the safety range. I know I have enough weight, suspension, and wheelbase stability to handle not only the weight of my loaded travel trailer, but also the dynamic sidewind pressure that you face with a 25 to 28 ft travel trailer. You are pushing the limits of a Ford Explorer, and pushing the limits is not a place I want to be out on the road.

I regularly pull my dual axle utility trailer grossing close to its 7k lb max( with firewood) and my f150 did it no problem, so I was surprised when I brought home our 24ft 4k lb travel trailer and it handled terrible. I was bouncing up and down and swaying all over the interstate. I now know that the the campers tongue weight is more than my utility trailer because of the relative position of the axles and that I need a weight distributing hitch with sway control. I'm also gonna invest in some timbren ses bump stops because my truck would benefit loaded, unloaded, towing,or hauling. I dont lack for power or braking, but certainly was caught with my pants down otherwise.

Air suspension is a tricky one...I am pretty sure they say not to use weight distribution because of the adjustment in the air suspension and then drive shaft and axle angles. We are doing a very indepth video on tow capacities and weight and really break it down. I'm pretty sure if you ran weight distribution the factory recommendation is that it would interfere with ride quality, handling and operation of the air ride.. id call the dealer and see if you can get a phone number for land rover tech support. This was a great video to watch just because I am in the process of getting a travel trailer camper and I was looking for a video particularly with a Ford Explorer was pulling one. I have a couple questions to ask did you have to get the brake controller installed or did you do that yourself, and and the length of your travel trailer and with all your gear what is the weight you’re pulling if you know that. Because I have the same explorer and year that you have, thanks again for this video.

The brake controller is pretty easy to install pending brand or manufacturer. If your pretty handy you maybe able to install yourself. However your Ford dealer should be able to do it in an hour for you. Loaded up we are just under 4600lbs, I am actually going to be doing a very in depth look at towing capacity and what is all means and put some myths and opinions to rest. This video will have tons of insight capacity, what the manufacturers really says and why your vehicle was built the way it was!!! so stay tuned for that video I will be launching that in a month when we set up our travel trailer for our first adventure for the season.

Do not get a trailer that size with your ford explorer. I dont care what hitch setup you use, the weight of this trailer exceeds the payload and towing capacity of a Ford Explorer. Not only will you damage the SUV, but you will endanger the lives of your family and others on the road.

In this google search world we live in, we can find numbers, figures, and people with the answer we are looking for, not always the answer we need. One thing I have learned in my years of camping, towing, and driving large trucks is the questions should not be, "Can this tow vehicle tow this trailer? Instead, it should be, "SHOULD this tow vehicle tow this trailer?" And sadly, the first question is usually where people stop when the answers to the two questions are often different. If you are new to travel trailers and towing, do a lot of research. Don't find one video and say, "Alright, I can pull a 5th wheel with my Ford Ranger!" Yes, I'm exaggerating, but we all know those knuckle heads are out there rolling down the highway.

If Subaru recommends NOT using a WDH I would definitely heed the warning unless you can confirm from someone at the factory that it is OK. Subaru's as a whole have a good reputation in the collision industry for being great in crashes. Your unibody in your vehicle is designed to "crumple" in a certain direction and way. Subaru's recommendation here may be because the section point for your rear frame rails.
