Im watching this 3 years later, and so much of this applies to ALL drivers. Staying in the right, dont clog up the left lanes, and driving "speed limit" making you a hazard. Well said and too much pride gets put into driving, just be respectful and if youre not in a hurry dont just hit the left lane and put your cruise control on, passing on left is a forgotten rule of the road. Its much more dangerous for 20 cars to jump over to the right and back over to the left than for one car to just get over one lane.
As a semi driver, you nailed it, all of it. Always ready yourself for the road ahead. All, okay the good truck drivers, are always looking 3/4 to 1 mile ahead and keeping a safe distance. I know not all truck drivers are safe, especially now a days. But I’m one of the few that can say they have over a million miles of safe driving. Love the videos, keep coming and safe driving! We’ll be looking for a used 6.4 Ram next year, just getting some more bills paid off right now.

Once again, uve brought alot of key points in rv towing to the surface. I agree with everything you said as well as execute them myself. One thing id like to add is whenever you stop to stretch or refuel you need to walk around to each wheel on the rv and just touch the axle hub (or use a infrared thermometer). This is what i do to determine if my bearings are in good shape. If one or two of your hubs are hot or are hotter than the others it probably means ur about to experience a bearing failure and if you can detect that before it happens then you can save yourself alot of time and money. Preventing damage and possibly causing a serious accident is a win in my book. Always remember that the smoother the transit is, the less stress you put on urself and ur family, and the more you will be able to enjoy your trip
My uncle swore something was off in his truck recently, after towing for a bit. We stopped and got out, and the driver side wheel was scorching. Heat coming offi it like an industrial strength toaster. Brake issue. I never would have noticed. Things one can learn from the old and wise haha.

very good tips without a doubt. Our trailer is about the size of yours, and I do tow it with an F150 Powerboost. A lighter truck than yours for sure, but with a well set up weight distribution hitch the combination works just fine. I like to keep my speed to 65 mph or less, mainly for fuel savings, as no doubt above 65 it really starts to guzzle. But you are quite right in my opinion that certain traffic situations do dictate a higher speed, and thus it is important to make sure your truck/trailer set up can handle that from time to time, and in those times I just have to watch the gas needle dropping quicker than I would prefer and not worry about it. Continued safe and happy travels....

Great video and lots of helpul tips. Ive never travelled with my travel trailer in heavy traffic before. I will be driving to Charlotte and then to Fayettenam next year with my rv to visit my in-laws.
Glad to know I’ve been doing nearly everything you’ve talked about. I just have to practice driving in a middle lane in metro areas so I can get out of peoples way when they enter a highway.

@Ron Jones I get it completely. I would plan to get gas every 2.5 to 3 hours. I thought it would be a pain to stop that frequently but it is actually a great thing because it allows you to get out and move around. Helps to prevent fatigue longer and it helps to keep you alert more. When you pull into gas stations just take your time and assess your route before you pull in. It's not as terrible as people tend to make it seem as long as you simply take your time and don't feel bad about taking up space. People will be fine waiting just like you will have to wait at times to find a lane to fill up in. Be anxious for nothing 😁. You will be fine for sure

Have learned from you videos, made our first trip with our 2800 this past weekend little over 250 miles, going up was very easy, Sunday afternoon the winds were 15 to 20, so felt the cross winds a few times. Just like you have said you feel it but was manageable. Don’t see an issue with my half ton. Thanks again!!
Good advice. I am like a scanner when towing. Constantly scanning what's in front, behind and to the sides of me. I used to go 80-90 mph while towing my 36' travel trailer. I had 1 almost big incident where I couldn't stop luckily had a lane open to the left of me to bail out in. Some idiot weaving in and out of traffic cut me off and then slammed on brakes when he had no where to go. Now I am 60-65 always sometimes a little more if flow is faster. But wow what a difference in gas mileage. Can now make our 4hr trip to beach without stopping for gas about 1 1/2 before we got there...
I would recommend the TPMS Tire Minder. It is a little costly it has a rechargeable little LCD monitor screen with a mount so that you don't have to use your phone while driving. It also has a transmitter that is so easy to install to the RV battery. Depending on how long your travel trailer you may or may not need the transmitter. I have a 32 foot travel trailer and I mounted it underneath the belly. I also have the same setup as you. Be safe on the road great video and hello from San Antonio, Texas.

Great video! Will be making my first big pull with our camper in april. Heading to Hershey PA. Can’t wait to try out my new to me 2017 ram 1500 towing our 32.5 foot flagstaff ultra lite. This helps a lot with driving on major roads.
That I40 on both ends of Raleigh (east/west) can be a nightmare coming in and leaving out!! I get out of the traffic jam/backup and wondering where’s the accident and nothing, I’m glad there’s no accident, but what caused a 1-2 mile traffic jam!! patients is definitely needed.

The construction doesn't help either! I got stuck in the right lane on the ramp leading from 440 to 40 east pulling my camper and damn near put it into the barrier bc no one would let me over. Talk about stressful!
@@llldaslll1590 you are spot on about that section. The barriers make it pretty tight in those construction spots and people are moving to get to where they are going for sure. Definitely not the funnest part of the drive and stressful for sure. Nothing but the truth in your post my friend!
I would say a good tip general would be too time arrival in bigger cities when the roads are not used as much. Like Knoxville,tn I normal try to time going through there at like 3 to 5 am. If possible
following distance is always something I try to maintain more of when towing. The issue I seem to have when I get in traffic with my camper is other drivers in cars often see that space and cut in front of me making that space smaller. Then I have to slow down for a moment to gain my space back and often someone else will change lanes in to that cushion I like to have. seems like there isn't much I can do about these folks but just be more on alert. I wish more drivers would have some understanding about how towing works and that we are not leaving that gap for them its to keep us safe.
Most people do not look far enough ahead and in a lot of states, does the trailer/5er GVWR over 10000 lbs- you need a non CDL license. Check your state, max weight of truck and trailer over 26000- non CDL. Check your state.
A couple of things you missed - 1 Anti-sway hard ware MUST be used on trailers over or in excise of 26 ft. 2 - Know where your Trailer brake controller is and that its easy to activate if needed for added braking to help in emergency stopping. 3 -If your towing vehicle is equipped with a Tow Haul feature Make sure you use it as it will save your transmission 4 - Make sure your tow vehicle is equipped with the appropriate hardware { external Tranny cooler in line with the stock one in your radiator, And Engine oil Cooler as these will help dissipate the excessive heat .

Be cognizant of your trailer rear bumper when pulling away from a gas pump while also turning. Saw a guy rip out the left rear section and bumper of his trailer for turning too soon.

Never exceed you trailer tires max speed. If you are to slow doing 65 mph then find a safer rout. But great video, thank God for the fl turnpike no traffic and don't have to deal with people runing 90 mph
I know this only helps your video and you probably don’t care but I found it very concerning watching a video about being safe as you stare at the camera while towing your family. More concerning, a car seat safety check can be done for free by car seat safety experts. Please consider taking more steps to secure your child in a better equipped car seat.
He is using hands free recording. No different then conversing with a passenger or on a phone call. What law is being broken. He's following at a good distance and is observant of flow of traffic
What drives me crazy when people come to merge on they need/should get up to the speed limit to merge. Don’t be that person going 45mph trying to merge when it’s 70mph. Drives me nuts. Not talking about semi or people who are pulling and need more for to pick up speed just the random people in cars and trucks running to the store.
Towing above the speed limit because it's "traffic speed" is one of the worst pieces of towing advice I've heard. You can't maneuver or stop a fast as the rest of traffic. But what do you expect from a guy who's previously endangered his children by towing a heavy trailer with a half ton and has them in the vehicle while filming and driving.
What a bunch of bullschit! Keep to the right! Now days no one rides in the right lane, like the law says you should. Oncoming traffic is supposed to speed up to merge on to the highway! Why do you think the merge lanes are so long? Even truckers are riding in the middle lane, like a bunch of ahs! Who taught them this? Years ago people knew how to drive. How about we just take the right lane away and have just 2 lanes. Would you then stay in the left lane. Then we just should make all roads one lane. Driving sucks because people think like you. The law says keep right for a reason…to keep traffic moving efficiently. Stay in the right lane and let people merge as they should! Now go ahead all you people who don’t know;how to drive, go ahead and tell me how wrong I am…..think! I;used to enjoy driving, now everyone is like you…they think they are the most important person in the world and laws don’t apply, and neither does courtesy or common sense!
You are too concerned about oncoming and offcoming traffic. If you are in the right lane, you are not obligated (legally) to get out of the way (or make holes for) of oncoming traffic. They have two pedals and can pick the hole in front of me or the one behind. It is their job to merge into existing traffic. It is not your fault that they cannot turn their head and execute a plan.

When I delivered RVs I did the speed limit of 80 on those 4 lane southwestern hwys, with my personnel trailer, I avoid those highways.

Agreed. Mine are 75mph rated but many are 65mph rated which I personally think is too slow of a speed to be rated at.

You are too concerned about oncoming and offcoming traffic. If you are in the right lane, you are not obligated (legally) to get out of the way (or make holes for) of oncoming traffic. They have two pedals and can pick the hole in front of me or the one behind. It is their job to merge into existing traffic. It is not your fault that they cannot turn their head and execute a plan.
I think it very poor form for someone to make a video while driving. Illegal in many places and not safe.
