Any of you work with one, or several controllers in your home studio?
If so, let me know down below what are the controllers you work with!
Hi, Chris.I used to work on my Cubase projects with CC121. In the last months I have purchased a Presonus Faderport 8, that I use together with CC121, that owns the jog wheel, ehich in my opinion is pretty useful . Thanks for your precious videos. Have a nice weekend. Goodbye from Rome. 👋
Like you I enjoy using control surfaces in my workflow. I never used Cc121, but I do use a Tascam US2400 since very early 2000s. I added a UC1 and a single 3D printed rotory usb controller along with my Kensington expert wireless trackball that fillsin most gaps. Lastly I have a stream deck xl. I have no problems navigating and controlling Cubase, SSL, UAD, Waves, and Plug-in Alliance tools. I'm programming my stream deck t fully integrated with Izotope RX advanced in standalone. My favorite controller is the single knob I got from Etsy. It's set to midi mode, if I hoover over an unprogramed Plug-in, it the knob automatically works. It's got a black, dented metalic knob that makes working with hardware emulations like UA pultec, or waves H-delay feel natural. Like a glorified fidget spiner
I still prefer my CC121, I have the Function buttons setup for CR volume, and the rest switch between my monitors, which I love.
Are you still using your Faderport a lot Chris? I have the FP8, and find myself pretty much using it for transport controls. Maybe I should replace it with this...😀
@@AlessandroBagagliprivate That's a nice setup!
i have 4 controllers in use:
- Avid Artist Mix - main mixing
- behringer xtouch mini - transport section, Metric AB AB mode, reference track selection, Click on/off, mono/sides, etc, having the Metric AB on a softbutton was a gamechanger for me.
- DJ Techtools Midifighter Twister: Focus Quick Controls 1-8 & FX Send on/off and FX Send levels, i have mapped all my plugins to the focus quick controls, works amazingly well
- Streamdeck: for all kinds of shortcuts and macros
Steinberg needs an 8 fader CC121 with expansion options and fully backlit lighting
They are so overdue for this, I hope they make one at some point
Couldn't agree more. Love my cc121 but have an Icon Qcon ProX next to it so I can reach for more faders.
And colored scribble screens...
Oh yea, please make a video on mapping plugins to controllers 😁😁
Yes please Chris for instructions on how to map other plug ins
I love how Chris says he has "several tracks in this session." Chris' idea of several tracks is 173. I currently use the FaderPort 16 (after seeing your demo a few years ago). I really like it. My only complaint is a lot of button presses to get plugins to work, which can slow down my workflow. I also want to reprogram the buttons to work for frequently used items. The MOBI ONE seems like a good unit, but I also prefer faders, which will always deter me from anything. Good stuff, as always.
I love my CC121/ UR28m / MPK mini setup. They do need to make something new for the love of gawd...Keep up the great work Chris!
😮 Looks incredible! Definitely going to grab one of these.
Good video. You nailed it, and answered the right questions, without asking.
Yes i would like you to make a video 'bout mapping. I'm using a XTouch which, to be honest, only use the faders and the F buttons.
Qube Audio stood on my wishlist, but I'm waiting and hoping, that this year new controllers will emerge on the surface.
I also find that there should be a uniform cc code for knobs and faders in plugins. Ratio = midi xx, treshhold = midi xx, etc. In that way, a labeled controller knob with it's specific tx midi, always adresses the right knob in any plugin.
Greetings Marco
Thanks Bro🙏
I have one of these that I use for the same job on Reaper. Took a bit more setting up but it works really well. I use it in conjunction with a BCF2000 and a Korg NanoKontrol2. Really speeds up my workflow.
Nice video Chris! I was an early adopter of the Mobi One and wouldn't be without it, it certainly helps my workflow and gives my mouse hand a break! It does take a while to get fingers to go straight to target, but that's only the same as finding chords on a keyboard and not an issue for me. I use a "classic" Faderport and Softube's Console One Mk2 and all three controllers play nice together. I have had excellent support from Qube Audio and zero issues with reliability.
Hi Chris,
I allready work with this Mobi One for a couple of months and I really like it! It really is beneficial for my workflow and the integration with Nuendo is just perfect!
Some remarks:
- I changed the half of the buttons (some bigger, some smaller) to have a better overview and a better workflow
- as it is programmed with Midi Remote, I changed the allocation of some of the buttons to fit better with my other midi controllers (see below)
Just three point of critique:
- the pushing of the buttons make too much noise for my taste
- there are no LED-lights on the on/of buttons of all the sections, which is slowing down the workflow (you still have to look to the computer screen)
- as the British were so stupid to get out of the EU, I had to pay 105 euro import taxes...
As you maybe already know, I'm a very controller freak...
- I had a CC 121 but I sold it
- I had the SSL UF8, UF1 and UC1, but I sold them
- I still work with Softube Console 1 Channel Mk3 and Console 1 Fader
- I have a NOB (also handmade by one guy from Greece)
- and I have a Stream Deck and an iCon Platform B with a lot of buttons for all my key commands
Great video by the way!
Cheers,
Which buttons did you use? Where did you buy them? I was also thinking about that
May I ask what you didn't like about the SSLs?
@@galgogergoLong story. I also have Softube Console 1 MK3 and that suits me much better (better operation, more choice in plugins). In my constellation the SSL-plugins were causing Cubase to crash. And I needed something to control the Cubase channel strip, and that's the Mobi.
I would love to know more about how you get this unit to control external vsts.
I use a softube console 1 which I love and will be getting the new one , but I can see this being super useful for certain plugins or even Arturia soft synths
Got a second hand CC121 for €75 last year. Still can't believe it. It still works perfectly with C13, although some plugins still don't support the AI knob. It's an amazing controller!
How would you compare the Mobi One to the Softube Console One Mk III for Cubase users?
Great controller ! It would be great if you could make a video on mapping plugins with it !
do you use this in conjunction with the faderport or in place of it?
I never got used to hardware controllers. The setup is always time consuming. Setting up mappingpages. You are also looking down to grab a knob then looking up to look at the screen to see if it is responding. I think I am faster moving the knob on the screen with my mouse then a controller. For me personally I only want to have shortcuts to macros and keycommands. So I use a Logitech mouse G600 and TouchOSC.👍🏻
Automation is certainly really fast with mouse and keyboard, instead of a controller that needs to automate things in realtime wwhen listening. Sometimes you know exactly what you have to do, like pushing down a rhythm guitar 1-2 decibels during verses for example. Fastest way is to just mark that area with range tool and bring down the volume achordingly. If you where on a controller, you would have to play the same and automate it in real time...
I suppose. As a person who never used a controller. This is my main concern.
Hi Stephan, I read your review and tend to agree in general (then noticed it was you! 😂). However I managed to obtain a CC121 a year ago and find it especially useful for transport buttons when I have a window open on the screen that takes over the usual transport kb commands like the space bar for play. Also the AI button is great in conjunction with the mouse, just hover over and use the big button to increase/reduce easily. I also use the 4 function buttons as macros but when tracking I use the customisable macro buttons on it pro on a very old iPad otherwise slow but works perfectly with Cubase and is only apx €20! The CC121 other buttons are coloured coded and backlit so easy to locate. I don’t think I could get used for 40 white buttons on the Mobi.
Video of mapping plugins please!
Great video as per Chris. Very interesting and very tempting indeed.
Still using my beloved CC121. Great price for the MobiOne though. The pros and cons are pretty balanced in terms of work flow imo. My muscle memory is firmly entrenched in the CC121, but understands its usefulness for users as you state that uses Cubase's stock plugins. The catering for older Cubase versions is deffo a good look.
But with all that, I'm more intrigued as to what Steinberg intends to manufacture [if at all] as a follow-up to the CC121 as others have commented and alluded it's well overdue with the evolution of Cubase as it stands
I two controllers. A Behringer BCF2000, which per page has 8 faders, 8 knobs, and 24 buttons. There are 4 pages. And four nearby buttons which I use for transport functions. I posted a MIDI remote script on the Steinberg forum for anyone who is interested. Also some graphics to print out. Second controller is an Arturia Keylab 88. Important to note that it is not fully functional with the last two Cubase versions. However, there is a wonderful MIDIremote script that MC posted on the Steinberg forum that has super deep functionality. Highly recommended for any keylab/Cubase owner. Little bit of a learning curve but not too bad.
Bought one. Absolutely love it and had enough money left over for a cheap bass guitar.
Thanks Chris, this appears to be the natural successor to the CC121
Thanks for the review. I wanted to buy a CC121 but don’t find them for sale anywhere. Are they planning some new stuff? Any of you out there that can tip of any other replacement for the CC121 besides this one?
I have been using Mobi for a few months now and cannot use Cubase without it. The initial "Find the button - then look at the screen" conflict lasts only a few hours until the muscle memory starts to kick in.
I can see how people might wish to have a motorised fader, but for me it is less important as I have 16 motorised faders with my two Avid Artist mixers. I also have several stream decks and a nob, but the Mobi is now pretty much central to my workflow now. Mapping of 3rd party plugins is not immediately intuitive, but you shouldn’t be put off - it is worth it!
I have used controllers all my music life, CC21, Behringer, FaderPort, and several others - but for a Cubase Centric workflow, none compare to the Mobi. (A motorised desk with multiple faders is also an essential if you cost stretch to the cost).
Well done to the Mobi guy!!
Yes, a question! The examples you showed of EQ settings had it controlling only 4 bands, although some Cubase EQs have 8. Can MOBI ONE control 8 cue points?
Thank you as always, chris!
Thanks to you I got to know some cool controllers.
It looks more interesting than SSL UC1.
Very cool controller, Chris... and yes, the price is very good!
I've programmed my X-Touch Mini to control all the EQ parameters on the Channel Settings, among other things, but to be able to control stock plugins on the fly without [much] programming is workflow ecstasy.
One thing I'm still waiting for.. on any daw controller... is the ability to manipulate either side of the stereo combined panner... unless there IS a way and I just don't know.
Another thing, Chris.... is the Listen button only mappable from C13? I've been searching in C12 for this and can't find how to do it.
How could we build a preset to control a plugin like in this case with SSL? Thanks in advance!
B very interested in learning cubase mapping for plugins. My main go 2’s are maschine and push 2 mapped to cubase but it’d be supercharged if could map to plugins beyond QC. Mobi looks kinda neat but price point ways high without any visual screen support
Hi Chris please make a video on the the Midi Remote for the SSL.
Before DAWs there was the analog touchy feely mixing boards. This fusion seems good.
What I want to be able to do is to use my Presonus StudioLive Series 3 mixer as my mixer for mixing my songs on Cubase. I just can't seem to integrate it. I don't even know if it's at all possible.
Work with Cubasis on iPad?
You can just assign some button(s) on the controller to goto another (or the next, or any specific) mapping page, so you don't have to click to choose another mapping page on screen.
An advanced CC 121 is needed. I have a few of the earlier Pad Controllers which were also discontinued? Bring them all back.
Hmmm, that could be an interesting controller for me. I love the CC121, unfortunately the fader is faulty and they've tried to fix it in a botched way, so no chance of fixing it.
Is there a function on the EQ like on the CC121 where you press an extra button and invert the EQ curve?
Otherwise, I think it's a bit too expensive for me... With taxes I would probably pay well over 500,- Euro... but then I miss the motor fader, too bad.
I just can't understand why Steinberg doesn't FINALLY bring out a successor to the CC121! Thanks for your content Chris. All the best from Germany.
On your Faderport 16 do you get some weird channels in the scribble strips? Mine always displays Left Right Pan etc when I’m on track view.
Great review! Sad it has no fader :(
Thanks for that Chris. A very useful piece of kit. Are you able to use it alongside your Faderport?
Yes, that's my question too!
Yes, they are completely independent from each other, like all my other little controllers.
@@mixdownonline It seems like this would make a nice combination. I love the FP16, but using it to tweak plugin settings can be tedious due to the limited screen info that can be shown. This seems to fill that gap nicely! That alone would be worth the price, IMO
No fader? If I used the native eq and channel strip more perhaps. But I would rather get a faderfox.
information circulated recently on Steinberg Forum about the fact that Steinberg is working on the replacement for the CC121.
I honestly didn't hear of anything regarding this, but it would nice though
Salut Chris, c’est une information postée par Steinberg sur un de leur forum 😊
Dear customers.
As one of the first products developed together by Yamaha and Steinberg, the CC121 Advanced Integration Controller was initially introduced in 2008 - we are proud that it still is one of the best controllers for Cubase to date, being an essential part in the setups of both professionals and hobbyists.
Unfortunately, after being over a decade in the market, components required to build the CC121 are no longer available which leads to the situation that production has ceased. While the CC121 will no longer be delivered to dealers and distributors from now on, it might be possible to obtain one of the last ones through retailers.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the CC121 users and reassure that we will continue to develop new drivers and TOOLS for the CC121 to support our loyal user base when upgrading to future operating systems and versions of Cubase.
I would like to add that we have been assessing the future of Steinberg controllers, and we are working on ideas and concepts for a new controller solution to enhance your Cubase workflow.
Best regards,
Stefan Schreiber
Don't have Cubase, but this controller looks and seems to work super
Great but annoying that there s a matching between the number of the slot and the plugin mapping , i use console 1 + the pots and button of my midi keyboard (roland a88 mk2 which like just because of the fact that i can put console 1 , computer keyboard and mouse on it)
I use SSL UF1, UC1 and UF8.. Perfect for me 😍
Never used the SSL UF8, and the other. How do you like them as far as Cubase intergration goes?
It works very well with cubase. Many features have been added with the new update. Incredibly beautiful products. A review on your channel would be nice.@@mixdownonline
finally decent transport controls
It's such a no brainer 😁and has been for such along time . Steinberg needs a decent controller for Cubase - downsized Nuage. They would make a fortune .
I totally agree with you, a multifader Cubase controller would be amazing
Being owned by Yamaha, they expect you to buy Nuage, so now you know why there is no cc121 anymore, don’t ya just love corporate politics???
I'm not a fan of anything that doesn't have knob position feedback. I don't need screens, but I gotta know what the knob is already set to.
Does it auto bank? Meaning if you have one selected by your mouse and then you click on track 50 with your mouse does it auto select that channel that is far away from the one you had previously selected?
Yes it does, I explained it in the video :)
@mixdownonline ok. It wasn't clear to me but thank you. Now if they just add a fader I would buy one.
@@billyr9162 a fader would be great, for sure!
I would rather spend my £s on a Arturia KB controller (Keylab49-61-88MK2)! The Arturia has a mint script that i have been trialing since i updated to CB13pro and its really good IMHO..
the ultimate cubase controller is Nektar Panorama P1 or P4. You can control the entire DAW and any plugin. Deep integration, plus super versatile midi controller.
Funnily enough, I moved away from the P1 to the Mobi precisely because of the lack of deep integration after C10.5! Have you found an easy way to map ithe P1 to the channel strip? The Qube just works for that... Maybe I could have got there with the P1 and MIDI Remote scripts or something but I suspect I'd have spent a lot of time on it
@@jpspoons i use P4 only these days, actually broke P1 unfortunatelly. I am currently using it with Cubase 13 with no issues - channel strip works just fine, with default pot selection being eq and compressor. I have tons of plugins all mapped to P4, so most of the interfaces are fully covered with encoders, faders and motorized fader. I even map pads to different parameters within plugins. On top of that, I use P4 to control hardware synths and have maps for these too. I do have better keyboards, but overall nothing comes close to the P4 integration. At least for me and my needs - NI (although I also have Komplete Control for NI and Kontakt/Spitfire), East West, Omnisphere, and Cubase and tons of soft plugs, P4 is main physical controller.
@@earlsfieldThanks, maybe I'll take another look. You're definitely using it with the EQ, comp etc in the channel settings window rather than separate inserts? I couldn't figure that out at all.
I'm happy with the Mobi though, as I can control most of the channel settings for one track simultaneously rather than switching between them. Having the 8 faders on the P1 is great in theory but not being motorised quickly becomes a pain... I have a mode on the Mobi with 8 encoders set to control volume for 8 tracks and it's not as visual but works better than the P1 once you get used to it.
I'm still annoyed if I missed a trick on the channel strip though 😂
@@jpspoons so, i am sure it depends on settings and everything else, your mapping etc. First, my specs - I have Panorama plugged into MOTU interface and then leading to Mac. I spent some time on customizing Cubase and Nuendo commands, but in a nutshell, the only click with a mouse I need to do is to open the project. From there, once project is open, I have configured views with project on one monitor , mixer on the second one and plugin/instrument on the third. When i select a channel, whether in project or mixer window, tapping encoder opens the channel strip. With encoders I can control eq, compressor, even transient shapers etc. I have multiple layers for Panorama - lots of customized macros that open plugins that I want or perform complex functions that I frequently use. If i need to control the plugin, i just flip panorama settings to another page. It is brilliant how many different things it can control. At the same time, I can easily flip it to external controller mode, and control the hardware synths, both the rack and the keyboards (I have quite a few amassed in these almost 30 years I ve been fiddling with music;). I honestly dont know better all around controller that goes so deep into the Daw and performs complex functions. In short, for me it works from Cubase 7 till now, with no issues, on channel strip and other essential stuff. What exact issue do you have? Also, Nektar support is quite good, or at least used to be back when i last spoke with them. I dont mind trying this thingy though, looks nice.
I'm laughing at the world as i gently caress my CC 121.
How do you improve upon perfection?
x8 maybe?
If you click on a parameter with the mouse onscreen does the Mobi respond to that same parameter???
There are two answers to this: you can right click a parameter and save that mapping to one of the Mobi controls.
Or, you can set up any of the encoders to work as an "AI controller" based on the parameter the mouse is currently at - please note, you don't need to click the mouse, just hover over the relevant parameter and dial the encoder.
@@jpspoons Thank you....Highly appreciated 👍
No worries! The AI parameter is part of the MIDI Remote offering so not unique to the Mobi, but it does lend itself well to customisation with all those encoders!
Not convinced. Butoons are sounding too loud. It lacks some fetaures. But volume for control room is cool.
The idea is nice, but I don't like the design and the buttons noise. At least they could have built a fader.
It is expensive and to me seems cheap quality . Honestly I prefer the CC121
Looks retro. No fades 😮
That’s over $768 In Australian Dollars.
Terrible pricing for such a controller for us.
Might as well get a softube fader for another few hundred. 🤷♂️
Why is this guy constantly checking the door to see if his wife is going to walk in and find out he has a UA-cam channel?
Why didn't they put a fater on it? Huge mistake.
I love using the mouse and having less gadgets...more space, less money spent, less plugs, less electricity, less manuals to read and less headaches. But I respect the people who like it
Thanks for sharing your thoughts :-)
Nah.. I would need at least 1 fader.
not really for me; way too crowed ; hardly use cb plugins; will rather safe money and but the soft tube mkiii controller
No fader?? What? Thats a big deal breaker.
What 450$ usd....?? I thought maybe 150$ lol. You could almost buy the mackie qQcon which is an 8 fader board for 450 usd ! Sorry.. this is not a good value imo. Nice review though.
No worries, glad you liked the video, and thanks for watching :-)
It looks very uninspiring and crowded
