    How did I NOT know this? I’ve never understood why I was proportioned differently from other people my height. I am nearly 6 feet tall but have far shorter legs than other people that I’m familiar with. Your explanation of how Japanese people are proportioned explained it for me. It was a revelation! Thank you!

    I wear a hakama for akidio and trying to find a women detailing how to wear it was hard so i've been wearing it the male way for a few weeks but this looks much easier to to and better described thank you

    I had no idea there was a full obi and bow under the hakama.
    The most I've worn has been yukata for the local omatsuri. I've always wanted to give hakama a try but I've always been concerned with fit. I'm both much taller and heavier than your average Japanese woman so sizing is a real pain.
    This has been very helpful.

    Thanks for the clarification on types of kimono you can wear with a hakama. I have worn them with komon most of the time and I always wondered if that was correct.

    This video is awesome! I got a komon kimono today from a grab bag and it's quite short on me as I'm a tall girl even without the ohashori and I was worried I'd have to resell it, but if I get hakama pants I can still make a nice style! Thanks for the awesome video!

    I wore Hakama once and it was so comfortable! I love it! I really want to wear one at my graduation even if I'm in America. Japan has been a big driver for me to finish so for me it's a tribute some a culture that inspires me so much.

      Rebecca Cocker yeah, a long hakama looks so great with tabi and zōri. You could also try to tie the obi a little higher, when you want to wear it with boots.

    I know this video is a couple of years old at this point, but can I say it's GREAT to have found it?! I have a small collection of kimono and one hakama, but the hakama was for kendo and costuming and had the backboard and everything. I recently got a woman's hakama and then I froze when I realized, "Oh gosh... I don't know how I'm supposed to actually wear this with my kimono to look nice!" Thank you so much for this. ;w;

    The bump from the obi bow reminds me of the effect of a bum roll or bum pad in historic European clothes. The front and back ties on the hakama skirt is also very similar to how petticoats are made.

    All the advices you gave on how to choose a hakama are so good! Thanks! I learned the hard way the differences in body proportions between Japanese people and European people : i bought online a too short hakama because of that! I still can wear it for an informal style with boots for example, but my first purpose was to practice kyudo, and of course it wasn't long enough for the formal wearing of the ceremonial shoot! I finally had to buy another one! 🤣 I wish i had your video a few years ago! (but well, i still have this shorter hakama!)

      You can either have/sew a shortened kimono (those are in existence, but I guess they are fairly rare, because I have hardly ever seen one in shops) or just gather up your kimono. You'd find instructions on pinterest, e.g.

    • @BillyMatsunaga
      @BillyMatsunaga  4 роки тому +8

      oh, I've never sewn one, so I'm not quite sure. Usually hakama is a made of a hakama fabric. I think. Especially the most formal hakama for men is made of silk and heavier than kimono. My hakama is polyester... but it does its job! :)

    Great video! When you wear the pants Hakama over a Kimono, I suppose you should make the kimono short enough so it does not get caught in the crotch between the legs? Last question, I suppose with thos big side openings the Hakam must always be worn over something for modesty or is there a way to add an innner "skirt" to it so it can be worn over a shirt? Maybe just wear a very long shirt LOL

  • @g.strobl4458
    @g.strobl4458 3 роки тому

    Years ago, I made a hakama, and it fit me perfectly. Recently, I tried to make one again - same pattern, just different width. The length was the same, because I thought: I grew sideways, but not in length. Weirdly, it was too short. A LOT. I think it's because of my added weight, it curves more at the hip, because I wore it like a standard skirt, not with kimono. That probably requires added length. Just in case anybody else wishes to wear theirs like a skirt. :)
    Another thing that surprised me: When I made a floor-length hakama and jumped on the trampoline with it, I expected it to make things a little difficult. But no, not at all. Didn't stumble a singe time. :D

      The karate gi is more like a reinforced underwear. Very different. Aikidoka often wear hakama - traditionally, I believe, those who hold a black belt. Kendo also sounds familiar for hakama-wearing practitioners. No idea about kenjutsu, but it would make sense. :)
