      @@ChristianPerez-kd5jg I love those Kendrick tracks. But try to find a line/pair of lines in those songs that can top a line/pair of lines from those Lupe songs OP mentioned. Lupe has a tendency to make every line important. I love rapping along “I flow tighter than virgin lips,” but Lupe wouldn’t have a line like that. Regardless, I love Kendrick and Lupe. Kendrick over Lupe any day, too.

    Man. The similes. Metaphors. References. Analogies. Double rhymes. Double time. Triple time. Consonance. Assonance. Extended metaphors. Story telling. Story telling across three albums and three mixtapes. Telling a story backwards. Rapping from a inanimate object’s point of view. Rapping for nine minutes. Making you debate (15 years later) if kick push was about selling drugs or skateboarding and if Michael Young Never lost his dad, would he have met “The Cool” and have to dig himself up out of his grave with a watch. The cartoon references. Double entendres. Triple entendres. Whatever heck, Septennial entendres. Has anybody ever heard of Lupe’s song called “Hurt Me Soul”. Omg......dude spit all of the world ills. Dude was massively rhyming talking about trump and Oboma way way back and social issues and making it FRESH. Man. .....just listen to food and liquor. The original leaked version. Dude had a song with Jay z on that album. Lupe killed it. Jay z went and RE DID HIS VERSE ONCE THE SONG CAME OUT. Lupe Smoked him. That’s how Great Lupe is. Whatever you want, LUPE GOT IT. Oh yeah “Coulda Been” is his first recorded song and is one of the best songs ever.

Lupe had to fend for himself in the industry. Kendrick came into the game with the covering of Top Dawg and TDE. They protected Kendrick from dealing with some of the pitfalls and issues that Lupe had to deal with in the industry. Most artists, especially conscious artists dont have the chance to have the career Kendrick had. People just assume lupe fell off cause of accessible music or something but he had tons of label battles that kemdrick never had. Taking songs off the radio, label refusing to put out albums, telling him they wont promote him, getting black listed for his political opinions, giving songs that would have blew him up even more to other artists. list goes on. Imagine if kendrick was on a label that felt like to pimp a butterfly needs more edm instrumentals because Kendrick has crossover appeal, and refused to release it to the point fans protested. Kendrick would have fell off. He is on a label with people looking out for him, who makes sure he eats, and makes sure him and his music can breathe.

    There are a few things that none of them mentioned pertaining to Lupe.
    First of all, Lupe's mixtapes like 'Farenheit' and 'Enemy of the State' have some of the hottest tracks of all time. His one off, 'unreleased' singles/freestyles are crazy as well. "Free Chilly Freestyle", "You, Me, Him, Her", "Ignorant". These are a few of the best lyrical freestyles ever released. To only make mention of his albums is to do him a great diservice.
    Also, just his sheer ability to hit you with a triple entendre that recalls a line from earlier in the song, while tying into an overarching theme is just unprecedented. I've listened to Lupe for 15 years and still find refrences and additional layers of an Entendre that astound me. To truly understand his songs you have to study history, film, cartoons, fashion, literature; the list goes on. He will pronounce a word such that it will sound like two different words, where both of them work in context but have totally different meanings. It's superhuman.
    Lupe is, hands down, the greatest lyricist of all time. I don't think it is even close.

  • @Braillionaire
    @Braillionaire 3 роки тому +9

    I think something important to point out on the accessible songs tip. When Lupe was making accessible songs, he did it in his nitch. Were his accessible songs crazy lyrical? No, not really. But they were crazy CONCEPTUALLY. And that's really Lupe's bag. Superstar was part of a concept album talking about going to heaven and with a video where the streets were personified as a hustler with an arm that turned to bones when the lights flashed on them... That was a SINGLE! Lol and not just for the vid, it tied into the actual lyrics and album which was heavily promoted.
    Kendrick's bag is that he raps weird, lyrically and really well. Before he blew up, that was his bag as well. When he makes accessible songs, that's still his thing.
    So there's a difference in even how they approach "accessible" songs.
    Lupe has said that being crazy at rapping, isn't necessarily what separates him from the pack. It's his concepts that he puts the most pride in.

    Be Humble speaks to the point at 9:05. Not the most lyrically thought provoking record, yet very catchy as far as mainstream criteriors go. Adding that it also was a subliminal diss record (insert any similar competing artist at the time: Drake, Big Sean, Kanye) and you have a recipe for success. Similar to Ether and Takeover. Takeover was not a radio friendly record lyrically and production-wise, however Ether, the more simplistic of the two was the more catchy record hence deciding the determining factor of the outcome....

    Kendrick is a better overall MC. Kendrick is nearly as good a lyricist (he leaves the concepts to be discovered, rather than lecturing them into your head). Lupe is like a Lit. Professor learning to rap and Kendrick is a rapper moonlighting as a poet. Personally prefer Kendrick. I like to have to work for the messages.

    • @PaintedHoundie

      Mainstream doesn't mean watered down so the statement still stands. If your entire country knows who you are, and you're performing at the Grammys and are getting awards from the most popular institutions you are mainstream. Its not a word used to describe something inauthentic, its a word used to describe how popular something is. Kendrick charts billboard every time he drops music. That's mainstream.

    4.VERSATILITY of rhyme styles - Kendrick (by a hair)
