Focussing on the supporting hip is a very helpful tip! I tried it out immediately and it worked! Thank you very much :) However I have got problems with my développé devant, it doesn't get higher and I always use the big muscle on my l active leg.. :/
Could you please do a video concerning alignment and using your muscles correctly? This would really help me a lot. Thanks! BTW, love your videos, they are great!!
I find your teaching fascinating. I am not a dancer but a choral soprano and my wonderful voice coach taught me just as you do: to use visual mental cues to free up the voice/body and break through barriers. The power of the mind is amazing.
Your videos are a huge inspiration for me! I wanted to become a professional ballerina, but my turnout is small and I don't think I can stretch much further! Also I lack a lot of balance, so I was wondering if you had a video on that, or of you could do one. Even though I'm not going to be a ballerina, I still want to be a dancer so these videos help me a lot!
Go to physioterapist (english is not my languaje), and take Rx to know if your skeleton can rotate. Perhaps you're compensating with back and that's why you don't see improvement. Balance can be developed with workout and time.
I paused the video to get up and try concentrating on the supporting hip instead of the leg I literally freaked out! The difference is incredible! Thank you so much for all your tips, Kathryn:)
I have a thing when doing it out a la seconde that my hip joint will click just before I can fully straighten the leg in developé before lowering it to the ground and it will also click around 45 degrees as I'm lowering it to the floor. It's not painful but it does make it more difficult to do them as I have to get the click out.
I wonder if you could do something about jumps? Like Brisé, Entrechats etc... all things where I have to cross my legs. I always have trouble with it, I feel like I am not fast enough to close my legs that it look like this fast crossing thing. I also like to get some advice to not lose the energy while jumping so that after 32 jumps I don't stick on the ground :/ thank you so much for your helpful videos! ♥ :)
Ah I hate brisé! My knee bones bump together. Like, the side of my knee. The rest are ez. Also I hate brisè because I am a jumper. I jump very high. But in brisé it's so hard to just skim the ground.
This was so helpful. Thank you! For the first time in some 25 years I was able to get my leg over 90 degrees in a developpe. If only someone had taught me this when I was 10, I may not have gotten injured either. Really, can't thank you enough! :)
Hi Kathryn, just wanted to say a big thank you! loving your videos! Especially your tips on technique, I am an adult returning to ballet after having a nearly 10 year break. Your videos are so very helpful 😊
I noticed that I grip the tops of my thighs a lot when I lift my legs, I tried focusing on the supporting hip and it really helps! The problem is that now I have really bulky thighs and I was hoping you could suggest some ways that I could get rid of some of the bulk, and strengthen the parts of my legs that I should be using instead to have long lean muscles. Thank so much!
same issue with me, I have lots of bulky thigh muscles (that, yes, they are strong) but when I stretch the rest of the leg to do the complete developpe, the leg goes down.
Hey i know this is a little late but i am the same way. When i went into a higher level ballet class i tried so hard and ended up using my quads and now i have bulky thighs. There is a video by claudia dean coaching that gives excercises to strengthen the correct muslces. They work great so check it out if you want
You might actually be my hero!! I am so happy i found your channel! You have helped me so much to get my strength back after a year of not being able to dance! Thank you so so so much for these videos💕💕💕
Oh, this is so useful! Thank you, Katie! I really needed this! My teacher always tells me about the supporting leg, but now I only understand the importance of the HIP!
This is so helpful! I never realized I was gripping my hips, but I was doing it so much, even though the rest of my form was perfectly fine. Thanks so much for posting this video!
Thank you so much for your videos kathryn, what I have learned so far is invaluable and so specific to the issues I am facing in Ballet. These are not tips I am getting from dance class either, much appreciated. Best wishes on you recovery and return to professional dance. xo
Wow, mind blown! Now I realize why it was difficult to lift my leg and can change the focus. What does it mean ‘on the table’? As in lying on your stomach and lifting away from gravity?
Sometimes I wish you'd wear tights or at least lighter colored leggings, because it makes it easier for us to see/learn the form you're trying to show us. ;(
your videos are great!! I really love it.. I make a big improve for myself. I'm pretty bad at ballet even though in the past I often got distinction in my ballet exams. After these 3 years, I always got merid.. and that made me lost my motivation in ballet. I thought that maybe ballet wasn't my thing..and I couldn't fit in cause I wasn't meant to be a real dancer.. But after watching some of your videos, I got my motivation back. I want to improve myself for getting better and better.
Hallo! I have been watching your videos the last week - and i learnd so much. I dnced until I was 18 and then stipped. i am now 26 and hope to start again, but do not find many videos with tips for dancers "starting over". I know you are very busy...but if you could find some time and maby do a video for dancers who need to be encouraged to start again it would be amazing. I find that I become discouraged, because all of a sudden, ballet ( even basic plies) are sooo hard! But thanx again for the amazing videos you have out there-will watch every one!
try the easy ballet barre routine video. I've had m.e. 11 years and recently decided to take up ballet exercise, otherwise I would probably be in a wheelchair at some point due to muscle weakness. it's been an enormous help and anyone starting or restarting...this is the place. the music is fun and its organised very well. I hope you try it!
Thank you for all your helpful videos! It has helped me still improve in dance and get some dance workouts done despite it being my exam year (so I've stopped dancing for the time being:( ) so thank you so much you're like my personal dance teacher already, I feel like I've learnt so much from you! Also congrats on getting back on the stage you really deserve it!^^
I think that often we try very hard in ballet class which of course is good, and we are told to work hard, but if you try too hard the wrong muscles fire up. Sometimes you just have to not work so hard. Relax your inner hip, and engage your core instead for stability rather than gripping the muscles in the leg. Rather than gripping the leg think about lengthening. I hope anything I said helps you out!
This is very important. Strengthen lower abs to support that hip and that leg lift otherwise you will be straining your front hip flexors and that will mess up your back. I wish I had known that a long time ago and now i have to retrain my abs so that my hips and back are aligned, also doing lower leg lifts and not lift high all at once. You should feel it under your butt on the supporting leg but not lower back.
My hip flexors are strained and my teacher told me to keep my leg raises low, and hips square. How do you use your lower abs and turnout to avoid straining your hips? Please post hip exercises.
Thank you for this video. I do not have open hips and my hips are not strong so when I develope to second my hip flexor (I think) really grips and feels like it’s pinching, my leg turns in, and my body loses alignment 😢 would just regular stretching and strengthening of the turn out muscles and hip flexor help this?
When I'm doing a combination I only think of the steps and technique that I forget to breath, I also don't have a lot of stamina. Are there any exercises to improve my stamina or how to improve my breathing while dancing. I'm always out of breath after every exercise or dance that I do, especially petit allegro.
My problem is that when I pliè I can’t keep the leg that’s up high then rise it higher when I straighten. I have a lot of trouble with it and I’d love tips and trick on how to master it. Thank you for all these helpful videos.
I'm having trouble with my extensions 😕 my legs are super long and my torso is too short! I'm flexible enough to get my leg up to my ear but I use my quad instead of my hamstring. I can't figure out how to use my ham though! Can you help me?
Hi Katie! I have heard almost every teacher tell me to use my hamstrings, inner thighs, and glutes to lift my leg up but I still can't seem to engage those muscles, only my quads! Sometimes this overuse of my quandary cause a lot of pinching in my hip and hip flexors! How do I isolate and the engage those back and below muscles for extensions?!?!? thanks!!!
For our spring show at my studio, we're doing coppelia. I'm in waltz of the hours and my teacher is making us do this weird pirouette from a kneel ( right knee back to do a right outside turn) up onto pointe! I sprained my left ankle and recently just finished physical therapy. I know it's a weird request, but any tips? Today I just started your ankle strengthening excerises, I hope they will help! I also tend to "plop" off of pointe, do recommend anything for that? Sorry this is long, but thank you for making your videos!!!
I have a question when extending by leg to the front or the side how do I not feel it on the top of by thigh I don't want big thighs so this will help me a lot thank u !!!!😄
So I have this part in my lyrical dance and my teacher says it’s mine if I get my develapae higher by next week I’m struggling but I really want this part
What's your opinion on Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonics? I can probably only do one of them, and I was wondering what the benefits are of each, so that I can choose the one that will be best benefit my training :)
I always find it so interesting how visualization and mental tricks can help so much with physical issues!
Focussing on the supporting hip is a very helpful tip! I tried it out immediately and it worked! Thank you very much :) However I have got problems with my développé devant, it doesn't get higher and I always use the big muscle on my l active leg.. :/
Did anyone else watch this video and notice ALL of the shoes in her closet?😍
Libby Bowen that was so me there's like 100 pairs
WHOA are those pointe shoes??
@@madelineb5184 Yup! professionals go thru them so fast, so its not surprising that she stocked up on the kind she likes lol
She makes it look so effortless...
María Emilia Catalina Zuberbuhler That's the thing with ballet. It's god danm hard, only it needs to look like it's a piece of cake.
Strengthen the supporting hip. What a concept! I have never heard that! No wonder my hips are always so sore. Thanks for this important tip.
01:08 I feel attacked. I can do grand battements just fine but I can't hold the blooming developpe
same
caz practice them at the barre a lot it will help
I watch like thirty minute videos how to get higher developpes but yours helped the most
Could you please do a video concerning alignment and using your muscles correctly? This would really help me a lot. Thanks! BTW, love your videos, they are great!!

Thanks SO MUCH!! You helped me in 5 minutes more than a few other teachers in years. You are fab, Kathryn, I really appreciate your videos xx
THANK YOU! I have been struggling with this my whole life.

meowool sameee omg
The more strength you build in your muscles, the less it will click.
good to know! :)
meowool same

Seconding this. I was just about to ask the same thing.
noopy99 So much yes.
Amethyst Leigh Perfect idea, need that too!
Yannie Lee thanks for the tip

any tips for holding your turnout in the develope?
I need some too ! :(
Me too
Samantha Corcoran h
Anything that I know is start the turn out from the beginning!
Could you please make a video for back flexibility? Like exercises and stuff! Thx XOXOXO
This video is sooooo helpful! my leg has got higher already :)
wow this video is AMAZING! so informative. As a beginner, I always focus on the other leg as opposed to the supporting leg!
This was so helpful. Thank you! For the first time in some 25 years I was able to get my leg over 90 degrees in a developpe. If only someone had taught me this when I was 10, I may not have gotten injured either. Really, can't thank you enough! :)

Came here to learn an exercise to help me improve my karate kicks. Learned a whole lot about general body awareness as bonus. Very good tyvm

OMG! Thank you so much! Your advice about focusing on the supporting leg instead of the working leg helped me so much! Thank you!
Helpful as always! I tried it right away and it worked like magic! Thanks Kathryn!
I would love a video about improving jumps, or maybe series on different jumps with tipps - your channel is so helpful! Thanks so much ♥

Thank you so so so so much for this video!! The focusing on supporting leg tip has CHANGED MY LIFE!!!! :D
Wow, mind blown! Now I realize why it was difficult to lift my leg and can change the focus. What does it mean ‘on the table’? As in lying on your stomach and lifting away from gravity?
That looks like a wardrobe of pointe shoes. Heaven!
I LOVE YOU KATHRYN MORGAN! THANK YOU FOR LIVING
Can you give tips on how to stop arches from rolling in?? Mine do and I hate it so much

Would love to see a video of tips for strengthening weak knees or rather the muscles that support the knees.
Do you have a video on how to improve turn out?
Any exercises, tips, to improve balance?

Thank you SO much. This was so quick and simple, but it is such good advice!
Thank you very very much for all of your videos! They are very useful for me! I want to be a professional dancer. Now I'm a Trainee!

Would you be able to do a video on balance? Whenever I practice my turns I have the technique down but I forget about my balance and it throws me off.
Love your videos! Can you do a video on how to have artistic arms/upper body? keep up the great work
Thank you for this video. but how do you make your legs stronger to hold it, because mine are always shaking
Help with arabesque turns? Attitude turns are much easier than arabesque turns for me! Also, how to get your leg higher in the turn?
My problem is that when I pliè I can’t keep the leg that’s up high then rise it higher when I straighten. I have a lot of trouble with it and I’d love tips and trick on how to master it. Thank you for all these helpful videos.
Does anyone know what to do if they r using their quads too much
Great tips that work. Thank you

Hehe 1:16 you described me so well! Im flexible but have zero strength! 😂 Im practicing though
How did you get such a good extention
