    I love the development where you do a double pass of the ink but leave the bottom with a single pass. This page of inks looks glorious! 😍

      Thanks William, yeah I think the the split between single and double pass works well to show the colour differences between a wet and a dry nib.

    Catching this late in the game and really appreciate not having to hear the explanations about the extra coverage on top of swatches and other repetitive details that more recent ones have. I realize it must be torturous for you to get repeated questions and don’t mean to give you a back-handed compliment, as I’m enjoying your videos. I hesitated to complain on newer ones, but based upon my extreme relief that I didn’t feel the need to mute the audio on this one I realized I owe you the feedback. Do what you have to do to remain sane. I’ll keep watching.

    What I love about shimmer inks isn’t so much the glitter itself, which sometimes is present but in many but the broadest nibs subtle. It’s what it does to the writing. It softens the edges, making the writing look like it’s hovering over the paper in some sort of three dimensional effect.

    Pretty inks to look at! I'm not crazy about glitter because they don't only go on the paper; I find them from the peppers in the fridge to my cat's head to my steering wheel!
    I have Kyanite du Népal which I use a lot, but after I decant the bottle a few times. It's a nice colour, has sheen and feels lubricated.
    I didn't realize just how blue Emerald of Chivor is for a green ink. Sample in cart!
    That blue nib holder seems perfect for you.

    It looks fantastic ! I also have Rouge Hématite, and I hardly ever use it (last time it was for writing Christmas cards !), although it is a nice ink and easily legible. Among your selection, I'm interested by Emerald of Chivor, although I have little use for shimmer inks.

    Well done, excellent video, as ever to your usual high standards.
    For shimmer I use Herbin Emeraude, Gris Orage and Kyanite which are all excellent. i just need to remember to agitate the pen whilst writing to get the full effect.
    A good black shimmer I use, wet and punchy, is Pure Pens Welsh Gold with gold glitter.
    Off your list I am having the Firefly and Orchid.
    Thanks again for a super review.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Allan! I'll have to check out hose Herbin inks as I haven't tried those ones yet. You definitely do need to agitate the pens with shimmer otherwise it tends to stick to one side of the converter and then become a shimmerless ink until later and then you get a large clog in the feed.
      I keep looking at the Pure Pens inks which I believe are made by Diamine, so I may need to pick up that Welsh Gold it sounds wonderful!

    Dave, Nice video, as usual, but do you experience any clogging issues in your pens? If so, how do you address them, such as shaking before use and cleaning more often. I suspect a wider, juicier nib would be preferable to a fine nib.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  3 роки тому

      Thanks! I don't usually get any major clogs, I will get occasionally a clump of particles that will clump together, the easiest way to free that in a C/C pen is to just prime the converter a little.
      I typically use on broad or stub nibs, I don't put shimmer inks in any expensive pens, usually the pens are under £100. If I haven't used the pen for a while or its sitting on the desk for a few minutes, I'll pick the pen up and roll the pen between my hands back and forth about 5 or 6 times just to help disperse the shimmer as it will stick to the cartridge converters. I rarely shake them as you could get ink coming out into the cap.

      @@PenultimateDave Thanks for the advice. Guess I will try the several I have in my Lamy's rather than my more expensive pens. I enjoy your videos. Thanks!

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Yeah definitely try them in cheaper pens, I typically have dedicated TWSBI Diamond 580's to be shimmer pens, the demonstrator barrels also help seeing where the particles are sitting to free them more. Lamy's work too although a demonstrator works better. More lately I've been putting them in BENU pens.

    I wish I had an use for shimmering inks. I think most of us have a bottle of Chivor sitting around that we don't use. The one I do use albietly rarely, is Coloverse Cat #22., but that's mostly about the science nerd Schrodinger's cat dilemma and it is a blue ink. I've got to say the base colors of the inks you chose are splended and I would probably use them without the shimmer. So gang, tell me for what you use your shimmers.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  3 роки тому +1

      I typically use them in my cheaper pens for writing letters, I wouldn't want to put the inks in the more expensive pens, although I know many people that do without any problem.

    Hi, how do you clean the dip pen between inks when doing these vids?

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Mark, there's a lot of editing between each ink sample, the actual video is usually around an hour long. I clean each pen usually with an empty bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku filled with water and I will dip 2 or 3 times into that and then use a paper towel to remove the ink. It's not as good as running under water from a tap, but the amount of ink left in the nib/feed from the dipping of ink is so diluted at that point, it doesn't change the colour of the next ink.

    I believe it’s possible to get “bad” bottles of shimmer ink. I have one of the JHerbin Anniversary inks, can’t remember the name but it’s a rusty orange color, and is much paler and has practically no shimmer at all compared to samples I’ve seen online and in videos.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  2 роки тому

      Hi Geslina, so Herbin did change their formula after I think Rouge Hematite because it was clogging up and retailers were getting complaints, so they dialled back on the shimmer to virtually no shimmer, but later started adding more shimmer again. That might explain the no shimmer you've seen. I think though the colours can change in batches. I've tried to mix ink colours to make another colour and although I have an exact formula of X drops of one colour and Y drops of another, it never quite turns out the same colour every time, so I think there can be variations between batches.

    • @geslinam9703
      @geslinam9703 2 роки тому

      @@PenultimateDave it’s Caroube something-something, the one I have that has about 3 particles of shimmer in the entire bottle. I also have Bleu Ocean and Emerald of Chivor, the latter being deliciously shimmery. Do you mix these J Herbin shimmer inks? I read you aren’t supposed to, but I put Bleu Ocean in a pen that still had the Emerald ink in it and got a beautiful deep navy teal color. I probably won’t buy any more J Herbin inks, though. I think Diamine is more consistent and reliable.
