Mark Farner is such an inspiration for this old man. I have followed him since 1969 & He has been solid and consistent as a human being and a performer. IMO the best front man that I have ever seen. His guitar work is so perfect for every song and has only gotten better as he has aged. His voice is simply one of the best EVER in rock. But for me it’s about his integrity, common sense, love for his fans and love for Christ; love for his precious wife Lesia. When he speaks love he means it. Thank you Mark for giving this world some of the best music there is. Thanks for being the poster child for good human beings. You are GRAND FUNK RAILROAD💙

Amen! My 2 encounters with Mark.... I was in High School and a group of us went to Little Rock to see Grand Funk (which probably would have been when they had the encounter with "Sweet, Sweet Connie." 😆) Security was really lax. At the end of the concert I saw this roped off area with no security standing there. I motioned to my buddies to follow me. We just leisurely walked right backstage! We walked down this hall and we knocked on a door. Don Brewer opened it and there was Mark & Mel standing there also. They were just as nice as could be. I guess they could see we were starstruck kids😁 Mark said to go out in the hall. He jumped up and sat on a table and we gathered around just talking. Such a cool guy. "Closer To Home" had just come out and I remember asking him how come they didn't play "I'm Your Captain" in the show. He said it was because they didn't have an orchestra with them. By that time some more kids had gathered around. I remember a guy coming around (later I realized it was their manager, Terry Knight) He was really irate and telling Mark, Don & Mel to come on, we have to go! Mark acted like he didn't want to leave...just enjoying relaxing and talking to fans. Jump many, many years later and I'm playing in a House Band backing up several stars from the 70s. Mark was one of them! Talk about a full circle moment. He was awesome! We did play "I'm Your Captain." 🙂 He broke 3 strings in the ride out and just kept on rocking it! Still sounded great! A ball of energy and the consummate pro!

Absolutely! I'm in total agreement with you. He is the best vocalist ever. Oh, that gorgeous long straight hair of his, drove me wild. I wish I hadn't missed this😢. That Michigan boy was just over the border of Ohio where I grew up. That band was the BEST!! Mark is an awesome Godly man. Thanks for all the fantastic years of great music!

It looks like I'm not alone on my feelings about MARK FARNER. I was turned on to GFR in 1970 and from the first song that I heard, WINTER AND MY SOUL, I've been a Loyal fan of Mark's. And that will never change.

@@ChromaticHarp Ha! Ha! I’m dead serious… Mark Farner was such a BIG deal to me during my “formative” years growing up… (14, 15, 16,) back in the beginning (69,70,71) that even just meeting him would be a life’s dream fulfilled for me… I would only tell him what he’s probably heard a million times over his career but still would be a life long dream… Anyway, I am a HUGE MF fan still and im a pretty good guitar player too… LONG LIVE MFR! @@sinsagoodmansbrotherMark was my rock “hero” when I was a kid. He was the man. I wanted to be and look like him when I grew up. I never saw Grand Funk in concert because I was too young to see them in the late 60s thru the mid 70s. Fast forward about thirty five years. I went to a hippie fest here in PA and Mark was part of it. My older brother told me where to go right after the concert if I wanted to meet him. He was right. Mark came through the back stage door and about 25 people rushed him. I was the only one who stayed back. A guy asked Mark if he would sign his guitar. Mark said, “I’m sorry bud, but I don’t sign guitars, but I will sign that guy’s shirt.” He was pointing right at me! I was the only one wearing the shirt he was selling in the lobby. I believe the funds helped to pay his son’s medical bills. Mark told everyone to stay put while he walked over to talk with me for a few minutes. It was unbelievable. After all those years I got to talk with my rock and roll hero! He is such a nice guy.

I’m not sure whether or not you keep up with past shows but I have a question I would like to ask. First off, Mark you are the reason I play guitar today. I played drums in school and in 69 or 70 Grand Funk played a show in Amarillo Texas and I got to see you play. I was hooked lol. I’m still a pretty good drummer but guitar is my passion thanks to you. Of all the different guitars you have played, the Gibson L5 is the one I wish I could have. Can you tell me about playing that guitar?

We saw GFR the winter of 1973 in louisville ky . REO opened promoting their , golden country album . During inside lookin out , this oboy comes up from ur left , puts his arm around ur shoulders and started to sing with ya. In 2 secs ur security got hold of em and took him away . What i want to say was tht even tho , carl was his name , no way he shouldve done tht , he meant no harm , he was a huge GFR fan . Wanted to sing with his boy . Lets say he was a bit impaired. After tht he cldnt believe hed done tht . Carl passed away several yrs ago and sounds like ur a Christian,, then ull meet him one day . He will be glad to see ya . Thks for ur time .
