- [The full track with the Simmons fills starts at 7:15] The classic Simmons SDS series drums, often used for many genres in the early to mid '80s - This example video covers one of their uses, for the Italo Disco classic tom fill ins.
This is typical italian. "Let me cook up something quick" , makes a 3 course gourmet dinner with wine in 15 minutes, then apologizes that if he had more time he would have cooked something better....
"I'm just gonna improvise a quick demo"
*rips out sick track in one go*
That's what I mean!! Did you see his video "Italy, 1984"? A MUST see, the track he made in that video is even more addictive (if possible...)
It cannot be learned anywhere, you must be born like that.
Talent makes it look easy
Ya think Paolo is a “one-take genius”, people?
lol
"just a quick melody"
proceeds to play dope AF jam for 5 minutes
I love those Simmons drum fills. I heard them in nearly every Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the 80's.
Came for the vintage equipment...stayed for the music. Great video.
as someone who's trying to write Synthwave, these vids have helped me find great synths to emulate and styles to work out into my music.
@Thorne he gave up
Synthwave was shit go for New wave
@@HipixOFFICIAL 😂😂😂
The OB-Xa sounds so good it makes me want to cry.
Indeed its so spacey
Super thank you for instructions on my favorite music. Greetings from the Czech republic.
Finally i know where those classic tom-tom sounds come from!
80s is gradually taking over, and Im proud to be 80s born
Well... every time I hear this, I'm speechless... it's SUCH a nice song! You really, really NEED to do this track in a long 7 minute version including the intro without, and finally with the SDS-V.... that would compete my all time favorite synth-track "Italy, 1984".
I agree
I have been born and raised in Italo Disco sound thanks to my father Marie-Michelle, I think this is the best sound ever and you do it. You are a king.
Though being a new-millenium kid, I adore the 80's music. I love this channel, since it shows that such awesome music is not that hard to create!
That OB-XA is a beast. Such a powerful sound.
Unbelievable collection of vintage gear!! Thanks for sharing Paolo!
Thank *you for watching!
I'm 22 and I love this music
I grew up in the 80's listening to this music on the radio, the New Romantic Sound, as it was called. Loved every minute of it.
Love this, those hexagon pads are legit. You can add a lot of feel to drum machine grooves with that sorta thing.
Paolo you are absolutely amazing, you can create a song just like that, and then playing synth, programming, and even using drums, you are truly a modern day Renaissance man! As someone who grew up in Italy listening to this beautiful music, your videos are a true blessing. Ciao e tanti saluti dagli Stati Uniti.
Wow, thank you! {anch'io sono negli Stati Uniti dal '96).
Love it! I love the 80s sound!
Love E-Toms. Suits well to every music style, no matter if Classic, Disco, even Jazz!
YESSSSS ! I,m also a Child from the 80,s and the Italo-Disco Sound ! Very good Demonstration !
Unbelievable man! I got 80s running through my veins! I swear im going to build a time machine and go back into time to go clubbing! Big hair! 80's italo disco all over europe! I better start building. 😎😉🎹🎼🎵🎶🥁
Your playing is perfect. I love some of the chord progressions.
Thank you
Just some
Paolo, your demos and tutorials are simply wonderful! I only wish that there was a way to spread this knowledge back when I was a young man in the 80's... so much I wanted to know how to do!
Keep up the good work!
lubertdas like you could afford any of that equipment back then
This video was so much fun! You really helped teaching "the kids" these days, the proper tools needed to create that classic 80's pop sound! Informative and fun! Bravo! :)
Man, this is the music I would love to play!
You need to drop an album... at least a 12" .. or at the very least uplaod some of your Italo stuff to Soundcloud!
lol, I agree!
A 12" would be so freaking cool!!
That Linn Drum sounds great!
Simmons SDSV and Oberheim DMX were heard in Ghostbusters (1984).
Ого!! Похоже😉
The reason I've been in love with the Simmons Drums since I was a kid. Finally got one, but it's the SDS9 :(
Was there a DMX in the "Judgement Day" bridge scene song that also features the SDSV?
great to hear some classic Simmons. thank you
And finally revealed what played the awesome drum trills in Mann Parishes HIP HOP BEE BOP one of my alltime fav electro hip hops.
Again immense respect and thanks to you. Brilliant work my friend🙏
Excellent work and vintage equipment that smells good of the 80's.
I love !!!
Italo disco rocks!!! Wonderful sound.
i love seeing how this is put together
So awesome!!
Simmons are and were so awesome!
your hands are at one with the Italo. ive never heard such a interesting progression on the fly like that it kept getting better. Italo.
Probaby the most recognisable sound of the 80´s
My god I can't stop smiling... This gives me the goosebumps. Love it love it love it!!!
You made my day again. You know, biggest italo synth freak I am.
i love the combination of drum machines and simmons drums performed live. especially with just a simmons kit and no cymbals, it requires a much more fun and interesting and especially creative way of playing to keep interest with no cymbals. a lot of phil collins’ stuff in the 80s comes to mind, especially with genesis.
that simmons drums are amazing
Btw a lot of musicians in the late 80's were using those pads for triggering samples or non-simmons drum sounds using Akai S1000.
Wow miss 80s..sound! Nice song brother
really cool, most videos are about 80s synths and over and over the same stuff. but this one is unique
This music was played in many discotheque, if i had a time machine i go directly back ...what a wonderful time it was and music
Nice trip back to the Simmons drums era!! Grazie, Paolo. :)
Not sure why this popped up on my recommended section, but im glad it did. Had no idea I enjoyed italian disco from the 80s lol
haha each trip back to the days in your little time machine channel brings a smile to my face! Keep doing what you are doing! :D
THank you, Pink Pony!
SynthMania im 16 an I even find the 80s drum machine cool love you're channel I subscribe to you please do more of Linn drum please thank you 😊
Amazing stuff again! Blown away by the kit you own.
As a 1983-born pop music lover, you have no idea how elevated I felt as the full demo began to play at 7:15!! :D
THIS is insane! But because I LOVE 80's music - I also LOVE this!
Wow, those old linn drums still sounding hot.
Oh! A Oberheim! You got me! I love your teaching! Thank you.
Thank *you for watching!
Hmm this recalls good memories of my old dj years! Just a few names which I played a lot like Koto, Fun Fun/Spagna, Valérie Dore and many Italo Boot mixes! Thank you for sharing this video!
Don't own a synth or know much about them (models, etc.), but this video was just so informative and entertaining. Every 80s low budget Euro horror movie just flashed through my head! :)
Great performance. I love the gear. I am a fan of the old drum machines as well.
The toms are my fav! 👂🏼❤️
This guy must be a music producer. This is awesome, folks...
That drum set is so awesome!
"It's the bloody Pet Shop Boys, Sweetie!" - Edina Monsoon
Man, you are a genius!!!!!!!! Love it every minute!!!! Fantastic video
Fantastic demo,SynthMania!
Conveniently, the first half of this demo, when you build the main track effectively answers a question I posed in another video you posted about creating 70s/80s drum-and-bass sequencers, if the technique you demonstrated was used for creating the accompaniment of Laura Branigan's version of "Self Control" which was itself an English-language take on an Italo Disco track.
Frankly, the word "Italo" is still kind of new to me. I always just assumed it was mainstream synthesized pop. Didn't know that there was anything regional about it. I know it isn't "rock music", but I have always liked when these sounds ere heard in rock tunes and miss it.
Two things I notice when you lay down the fills are the presence of a Leslie speaker in the corner and that you play with the butt ends of the sticks. I use that technique on my Yamaha DTX drums.
I just adore these tom-tom sounds, I'm also using their sounds on my synth for my first songs.
awesome, starting to remember again these sounds and styles,it great to see actual kit used as well, feels like back in 80's again! top video, keep them coming!
Whatever I'm looking for, I always find it on your channel. You're just incredible!
Great to see and hear. Synthwave is making a big comeback these days.
What a great sound!
Juno 6 Linn Drum !!!! Perfection ! Bravo !
You got great gears, great knowledge and great skills, man.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing this! So many familiar sounds of the period!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bravo; ottima ItaloDisco80!!!
Great video. In the 80s until early 90s there was also a typical London Beat dance usually people call it SAW style, where SAW means Stock-Aitken-Waterman, name of the musicians. Their style is highly recognized in many British, European, and Australian pop artists like Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Dead or Alive, Mel and Kim, Bananarama, Samantha Fox, and many more. Most of their drum styles uses Linn, TR-707, TR-727 and a few sounds of 808/909, where you can recognize them by those songs. If you have known about SAW, perhaps you can show their styles using the best ability you can do. Thanks.
"If you have known about SAW?" :-) I grew up with S.A.W. :-) A moment in time I'll never forget is the July of '85, I was in London on a school-sponsored trip and heard "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) in a disco for the first time.... jaws dropped to the floor and I loved that sound since -- Yes, I am a big fan of S.A.W. productions, I read the books, gathered all the info I could find over the years and have many of those machines, including the Linn 9000 like Stock used for the sequences - I will make videos about the S.A.W. style in the near future ;-)
Great! I'm glad you know about them because you're also grew up with S.A.W. I know about DOA's You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), and the TR-727's congas and bongos is often heard in many S.A.W.'s music. As for the synths there are also D-50's Staccato Heaven and pads, DX-7 basses, and many more including the rhythm guitars (i'm not sure whether they played using the real electric guitars or samples, but they made it good). Yeah, I'll be waiting for your next videos about S.A.W. in the future.
Very cool! Yes, they did real guitar, from Matt Aitken, the "A" in S.A.W.!
That was music to my ears!! And I loved the electric drums! In many ways, they sound much better than natural drums! Those were some really beautiful melodies and chords you played, by the way! Thumbs ways up!
This would have been some sort of hit in 83/84 - nice one!
Really good - Well done sir!
And those Simmons Toms sound awesome!
Berno, thank you
What a great synth the Oberheim is. I would give my soul for one- :-)
Great video, i love you tutorials.
Omg great sounds great instruments, thank you SynthMania.
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch. A very good tutorial how to compose a basic Italo Disco track with the characteristic drum fills. A very good source of inspiration for me. Thanks a lot.

Steven, thank you!
Was playing around on a soft synth on my PC today, and now, by chance and just minutes later, I hear the Juno-60 on UA-cam. Must be fate!
Love this
That Oberheims chord sound really reminds me of New Orders Subculture and the pattern like Bizarre Love Triangle 😜❤️
In 2008-2009 Hydee and the Hytops commercials, the LinnDrum and Roland TR-808 were heard.
Seriously, I'd love to hang out in your studio for a day.
awesome: a large source of of inspiration! You get the right set in order to play italo disco style!! big thumb up!
Mysterio F.T.S., thank you!
