Surrendering Ego In Meditation

  • When there is an expectation in mediation, there is a trap you are creating for yourself.
Imagine there is only one chair in your mind, either you can sit on that chair or the Divine can. As long as you, the ‘I am’ is there, the Divine cannot be there.

Experienced this 4-5 years ago after meditating just a few times, felt great bliss for a month or so, but then in the following months everything changed in my life - anxiety attacks, severe self doubt, I gave up my job, my expensive flat and most of my material possessions. I also experienced a lot of deep insights about life and existence. But alongside all of this has also arisen frustration, anger and a very strong need to fulfil my own desires, I've become very defensive about people controlling my life as I've been a "good boy" my entire life yet suffered with unfulfilled needs (adoption).
I guess this is ego backlash, but I feel convinced that I should integrate it healthily to function, rather than deny it outright. Is this correct? And how do I know which parts to allow or not?
Edit: I also have a lot of trouble communicating this experience to other people - especially my Sikh family, because I didn't experience this through Sikhi and I don't speak much Punjabi. I feel like the experience is the same but I'm unable to find the translation for them, so they think I've come under the spell of some fake guru lmao.

Refreshingly honest! Interesting how meditating just a few times induced great bliss albeit for a month or so. Obvious intriguing question in my mind would be to ask for a little more description ( as much as this medium allows) around what exactly this great bliss was? What made this experience so unique? How do you make the distinction between what could be assumed to be a regular feeling of calm or happiness we all sometime have either due to some success or good news or even unconditionally?
What led for everything to change in the following months? Was there a trigger? A cause? Or again did the despondency also arise without a cause - just manifesting of its own volition?
' Lots of insights about life and existence' - again you have my curiosity - could you expound here? Again this could otherwise be a standard comment/experience but would need to understand the substance before we make any conclusions which may be useful for our kin.
' Lack of control' , ' God boy' - these are quite common issues around our culture and upbringing that a lot of people are victims off. The cultural meme, lack of control, decision making, free thinking, religiosity, cloning, narcissism all are hallmarks of a model which renders individual impotent. Naturally, when these individuals break free - there is undoubtedly a craving and desire to reverse the process, start afresh, put the wrongs right and ultimately a warped sense of retribution, anger and various negative ailments become drivers.
Yes ultimately ego backlash - the good thing is your aware of it - which means its not you!? So what is it that is aware of it? Yes - always with all your might and conviction to resist unleashing the dragon, the victim. It doesn't have to be denied, you can rest with it, let it be and it will eventually dissolve - since its only a thought pattern you have fed and now cling onto.
I wouldn't worry about describing your experiences to others, especially sikhs in the first instance. Unfortunately as well intended as our brethren are we have a blind spot or unwillingness to accept that methods and experiences accessible from other faiths ( which lead to the same oneness sikhism advocates) are in someway inferior. No amount of logic or explanation will, in most cases - make people see beyond their own limited cultural memes and indoctrinated concepts. As you have mentioned you will be labels and accusations implanted. Simply focus on yourself, question your motives, your existence, examine your patterns, your concepts, your limitations, sit in silence, pray, focus, watch the various masks as and when they arise in you. Fix you and the test takes care of itself. The world will be the world, people will be people, accept that and with all your faith and efforts and laser focus question your very reality and find out who you are. Do this long enough and diamonds will start to appear in the dark ( General analogue, there are many examples one can evoke/employ- but you get the point.
Oh finally - drop the victim, the ' person' that is clinging onto its sense of purpose, lacking or success - do you not see the very analysis is what perpetuates the suffering. Perpetuates the suffering of a ' non existent' entity - now think about that!!! Waheguru.
