Thank you for this inspiring video, Jordan! I was cheering through much of it, but I was especially happy when you mentioned going to a community college. I too attended a community college, and I teach composition and literature at one now. It has been my privilege to encounter many students similar to that younger version of yourself that you described - people hungry for purpose and animated by the sense that reading and learning can bestow it. I enjoyed this video more than I can say!

Thanks for watching, Philip. Yes, the community college I went to was indispensable to me at the time. There were so many opportunities there and the teachers were easily as good as those who taught me at Binghamton. Cheers, and happy new year, my friend!

Jordan, this is so inspirational. Suddenly I want to pocket my phone and dive into my pile of books next to the bed.

Thanks for watching. I like to think that the amount you read to me when I was young had something to do with my love for books. :)

I absolutely love this video. I picked up reading as a hobby to assist me in recovery(addiction). My brain chemistry needed to adjust from expecting instant gratification all the time. It needed to slow down and enjoy the ride. I read many books with slow developing plots that condition my brain way from my addictive tendencies. I loved experiencing your journey in this video and thank you for sharing it.

Thanks so much for you kind words and for watching what was a very long, rambly video. I totally get your point about having to take a step back and rewire your brain, so to speak. There are so many distractions, so many ephemeral things vying for our attention, so much chaos and information overload. I, like you, have found that reading keeps me sane and grounded. It gives structure and order to my life. Reading, for me, has also been a way to distance myself from the din of so many fragmented, competing voices, and to instead focus for a long period of time on the very human story that ONE person is telling. Happy new year. :)

Thanks for watching, Mike! I know I didn't catch the reading bug as early in life as you did, but catch it I eventually did, and I have to say it changed pretty much everything. Happy new year, by the way! :)

Thanks for sharing! I connected with this. Lost in translation left me in a dream state that scratched at the back of my mind. I first saw it in my teens and rewatched it multiple times. I went from high school drop out, to community college, university, and now work as a software engineer. Books on Buddhism were my philosophy books. I am currently getting back into reading again. Only fantasy and sci fi for now. Reading has always helped me better articulate my thoughts, and organize my brain. The journey continues!

Dream state is a good way to describe the effect that that film can have. It sounds like your journey is, in some ways, similar to mine. Cheers, and kudos to you for reembarking on your reading journey. As a wise hobbit once told me, "The Road goes ever on and on/Down from the door where it began./ Now far ahead the Road has gone,/ And I must follow, if I can,/ Pursuing it with eager feet,/ Until it joins some larger way/ Where many paths and errands meet./ And whither then? I cannot say." :)

Thanks so much for watching. I'm sure it was long and rambling, but I hope it conveyed some sense of what reading can do for people, especially in the hyper-online, distracted world we live in today.

A lot of people have shared some anxiety over answering the “why read?” question, and you mananged to list 6 thoughtful reasons in just under 50 minutes. I really enjoyed hearing your answers and learning more about your past! Thank you so much for the shoutout and for being a wonderful guest on the “Why Read?” discussion series! Andrew Tate needs to pick up a book.

Andrew Tate might have the right to say what he did, and he does. I also have the right to think that he's a fucking buffoon who has no idea what he's talking about. My unbridled rage aside, I thought this was a great video.
Admittedly, I'm surprised that you started reading at a later date, based on some of our chats I would have suspected that you had been reading your whole life. I must borrow from a quote from Dead Poets Society about how I don't read because it's cute, I read because I am a member of the human race and reading is a great way to empathize and to understand our fellow man. It's quite telling that we're so hostile to each other nowadays, not because we don't read but because we're refusing to try and understand each other. Either we're right and everyone else get the hell out of the way. Reading books, watching films, consuming, thinking. That's what gets us to understand each other.
    Well done Jordan!

Thanks for watching, Britton, and for your eloquent plea for understanding and how important that is, especially in our polarized times. :) Cheers!
