A narrowboat cruise across a canal aqueduct

- In this video I took my narrowboat over a canal aqueduct which crosses the River Dove. The River Dove follows the border between the English counties of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, which means I started off in one county and ended up in another!
Sorry it has taken me so long to post another video by the way. I've had a lot going on lately and I haven't had much free time to edit this together.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy watching it and I'm aiming to post another one in a couple of weeks!

Agreed. In a world of over energetic videos on youtube it's nice to come back down to earth with a calm video. A bit like rushing all week in a city then relaxing watching cricket on a weekend!
Mine is actually 30ft long, the other woman’s boat was 31ft so that’s why I was saying they’re a similar size. I’m glad you like the videos! 😀

Just read your intro and it put me in mind of the only time I've been on a canal boat trip. Back in 1982, after my mum and dad had got divorced, my dad took, me, my sister and my nan on a week's trip from near Tarporley on the Shropshire Union and along the Llangollen Canal. Within 10 minutes, I'd fallen in (I was 12). I fell in a 2nd time later that day on the approach to a lock. I somehow shot up out of the water and grabbed the quayside. Then my dad got the front of the boat caught in one of the lock's crossbeams - the front end was jammed and the rear went up as the water level rose. It slid out eventually but my dad freaked out.

Thank you for your reply, Betty it was so nice of you. Yes, there are some lovely walks around the river at this time of year, and winter is magical as well. If you like nature and enjoy walking, may I suggest that if you have reached Branston yet, there is a water park called Branston Water Park you might like. It's nice. There's a little cafe there, i believe. You can access the park from the toe path of the canal, a little way up from a lovely pub called the Bridge Inn. Best wishes 😊

Good evening, Betty. What a lovely surprise as I opened my phone and there you were. I've been thinking about you and wondering how your journey has been so far. So, have you reached Alrewas yet? Be careful on the river! There's a lovely little church called St. Leonards, you might like to visit if you have time. I have fond memories of Alrewas, visiting friends who had a white thatched cottage by the river. We'd spend late summer evenings picking fruit from their orchard. Burton is world renowned for the quality of it's beer. It's all down to the water used. In times gone by rival breweries up and down the country would go to Burton to take water samples to see if they could reproduce it, naturally they couldn't. I'm a Londoner now living these past 40 years in Dorset and I picked up that information somewhere along the way! I'm enjoying your videos and looking forward to seeing how your boat is inside. Hi Betty, I hired a day boat from Market harborough canal basin, there was only enough time to get to Foxton locks for the return,I loved every minute of it, I can see the attraction!.Have you thought about a little fold up bike for your return trip to your car, you are probably happy with your walk 🙂
Yes I've thought about getting a fold-up bike. I think I will get one eventually, although I really enjoy the walking!

Aww I was sad to see the swan swim off, but I suppose they needed to be somewhere. It's a small world when you meet another boat with such a similar name! I wish I'd bought one years ago.

Dear betty rather than walk back 4 miles to your car which is quite a distance . haven’t you thought about a fold up bike on your boat . i’ve had a Brompton fold up bike for 15 years they’re strong fast and folded up it would fit on the backseat of your car with no problems . taking a slow bike ride along the towpath at 8 miles an hour will get you back to your car in around 20 minutes it’s only a suggestion . Enjoyed the video and seeing the 🦢you look very nice and ready for Royal 🐴 Ascot in that Hat and glasses safe sailing !!
I probably will get a fold-up bike eventually but I really enjoy the walking! I’ve always enjoyed walking along towpaths.

Yes I’m not sure what the reason is! I think it’s a worldwide thing with boats, e.g. that’s how they pass in the sea too.

Oh wow, I have very happy memories of visiting the Czech Republic as a child. We stayed near Brno Reservoir and I remember walking around it. I think I've always liked being near water.

Hi, loved this lated video, thank you 😀 Nice to see you in Burton-on-Trent, which is my neck of the woods. Burton really was the brewing capital of England years ago, with not only Marstons but also Bass Breweries and Ind Coope/Allied Breweries based there. Now it's mainly Marstons and Coors. Burton is also famous for making Marmite, and as all the locals would tell you, the smell from the factory at certain times of the day was pretty awful!!
Oh no, thankfully the smell was OK while I was there!

A cracking little video Betty. You've just passed through my home territory, just like Mr Swan. I see him daily on my dog walks between Mercia Marina and the Dove aqueduct.
He has a Mrs with 4 cygnets at the moment and patrols the whole stretch, fending off all other swans and geese.

I never knew about the river Dove dividing Staffordshire and Derbyshire. Branston pickle did originally come from Branston. More important than brewing beer Burton upon trent is the home if marmite. Another great video.

Been following since you started. You went past my house just before the Stretton A38 bridge. The canal just before and the one after the Bridge inn at tatenhill are the worst bits for road noise. Ps :- grab a pizza from the Bridge. They’re top class.

Going under the low steel bridge.....I ducked too! You handle your boat really well and do a great job of the commentary. I've never done a canal boat cruis but have done the Norfolk Broads - some great pubs! Lotsa love - Martin from New Zealand now!
It's a good job I don't have much on my roof or it might have been knocked off under that bridge!

I think its sweet that you feel embarrassed getting caught talking to the camera by members of the public, but the thought of 15 thousand subscribers is no problem :)
I think it’s easy to forget that real people are watching the videos, although it’s still a bit weird if I think about it!
