A cosy autumn cruise on my narrowboat
I've been really enjoying autumn along the towpath this year - I think it's probably the most beautiful time of year to see England's canals.
In this video you can see me continuing my journey along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.
Special thanks to fellow boater Kate, who helped me get through several locks! (She watches these videos and said it was OK to film her.)

Loki the dog's first narrowboat trip
Переглядів 25 тис.Місяць тому
For this part of my journey I was joined by my auntie and her dog Loki! Loki had never been on a narrowboat before but he was a very good boy and didn't chase after any ducks or try to jump in the canal. I've written subtitles for anyone has trouble hearing us talking in this video - just click on the button in the bottom right of the screen. (I'm thinking of investing in a wireless microphone ...
Heading towards Wolverhampton (and why I left before)
Переглядів 79 тис.Місяць тому
As I continue my narrowboat journey along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, in this video you can see me going through the outskirts of Stafford. This brought back some memories from my early twenties, and I reflected a bit on why I moved away from Wolverhampton all those years ago. By the way, here's a link to a video where you can find out more about the Stafford Riverway Link: ua-c...

Well this is weird... I've recently found out that someone has been impersonating me on TikTok! I thought I'd post this brief video to let you all know that it isn't me. If any of you are on TikTok and are able to report the account for me I would really appreciate it. Also, if anyone has any idea why this might have happened then let me know! Taking my narrowboat to my 'home' canal
Переглядів 137 тис.2 місяці тому
After not filming a video for a while I've decided to document my journey as I head towards my 'home' canal, the Staffordshire and Worcestershire. As the months go by I'll be seeing parts of the canal I remember from my childhood, except this time I'll be seeing them from my narrowboat rather than from the towpath. I hope you enjoy watching my journey!

Tackling the River Trent on my narrowboat
Переглядів 37 тис.4 місяці тому
In this video you can see me taking my narrowboat on part of the River Trent, in the county of Staffordshire in England. It was a really beautiful stretch of river but my heart was racing and I was glad to get off. I definitely feel safer on canals! Thanks for watching!
A sunny narrowboat cruise across a canal aqueduct
Переглядів 70 тис.5 місяців тому
In this video I took my narrowboat over a canal aqueduct which crosses the River Dove. The River Dove follows the border between the English counties of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, which means I started off in one county and ended up in another! Sorry it has taken me so long to post another video by the way. I've had a lot going on lately and I haven't had much free time to edit this together...
Befriending a swan and moving my car
Переглядів 63 тис.5 місяців тому
This video didn't turn out how I was expecting! It was meant to be all about how I move my car whenever I move my narrowboat, but then I befriended a swan. I've only recently discovered how to tell the difference between male and female swans. Males have a black bit at the base of their bill which swells and becomes larger during breeding season, so this was definitely a male swan. Anyway, than...
How I moor my narrowboat as a solo boater
Переглядів 266 тис.6 місяців тому
For this video I thought I'd respond to a question that someone asked me after watching one of my previous videos. It's all about how I moor my narrowboat, which is a bit more difficult when you're on your own. By the way, I think I pronounce "pilings" wrong in this video. I've only ever seen the word written down so I don't know how to pronounce it. Anyway, I hope people find this video useful...
Attempting to fix my narrowboat

I'm sorry if this video is a bit boring! I'm definitely not a DIY expert and I wasn't going to film this but I thought I'd better explain why I can't do a narrowboat tour at the moment. I also thought it would be good to show the reality of narrowboat life. I've had quite a few comments from people saying it looks idyllic, and it can be at times, but narrowboats need a lot of maintenance and th...
How I get water on my narrowboat (and do a three-point turn)

It's the third video of me on my narrowboat and I think I come across as a bit miserable in this one... I promise I'm more cheerful in real life! As you'll see from the video it's a bit more difficult than turning a car around. Thanks again...

Hi Betty , I've really been enjoying your accent. I have a friend who is from Oxford ( not the school, just the area) and she shares some of your inflections, but I'm guessing that you are from somewhere else. I have always believed that southern Ontario people, just like Northern Californians, speak the most neutral possible English. We have absolutely no charming sounds for anything. It's just like on paper, exactly as it's written. So we have no accents. However I truly enjoy your accent. It must be so cool to have an accent...sigh Please keep sharing your amazing experience. My Toronto team of fans is now three. So far it's me, Jamie and Other Jamie. Any Toronto fans out there wanna join ?

@bettyonaboat that is so funny...I have a young friend here in my little town of Wiarton whose father is from Wolverhampton. She said Wolverhampton, and I immediately remembered my Monty Python and I said 'oh, Wolverhampton wanderers ' and she was so impressed. Is there a famous rock band or celebrity from your Wolverhampton ? I think your accent is perfect. It's really catching over here.

As a former livaboard boater of 6 years, let me. First say that I admire your courage in tackling the floor problem,on your own. Don’t be afraid ask fellow boaters for their advice and you will find that help will be readily available . I do wish that I was 40yrs younger and more able than I am now, I would come and find you. As a mechanical engineer all my working life I have “fixed” all kinds of problems and I would love to show you some tips. However, best wishes Betty, keep in touch with Heidi the Pirate, I believe that she is a woman whose word and advice can be depended upon.

My wife and I used to live on a 70ft narrow boat, for 6 years, until my bad health forced us off. They were wonderful years and I wish that we were there now. Can I offer several helpful tips Betty, when mooring up, pas the rope double through the morning chain and take both ends back to your boat. Tie your knot to the cleat., as you do , but not as many turns as you do .finish your mooring knot with at least one half hitch, preferably two. That wil. Hold a battleship!,. Also, when possible, always tie you mooring knots away from the towpath, we’ve been cast adrift more than once because our knots were on the towpath. Happy cruising Betty, wish that we were there now. Lholad a battle

I watched all of your videos and absolutely love them. You seem like a really nice person and provide an honest and fun view of narrow-boating. Thank you so much. I'm watching from the US on the west coast in Washington State. I think I'd really enjoy a narrowboat, especially one like yours (for size). Of course, there are no canals in the US so it's not an option for me, dang. I'll just enjoy it via your videos. Cheers!

Hi. New to your channel and have a maybe dumb question..not being familiar with canal boat operation. Do all boats carry their own crank handles for the lock operation or are they all located at each station? I enjoy your relaxed style and informative side notes. Keep the posts coming and stay safe. Cheers from Tennessee USA.

A lot of boaters (including me) stay put when there’s ice in the water as moving through ice can damage the blacking on the hull. Some do choose to move when there’s ice though.

I know this is going against the grain when it comes to the general comments on your videos, but it is what it is. Let me also qualify this by saying I've only just come across your videos, so I don't know anything about your back story. However, I gotta say, I find the videos not only rather boring(there's only so much of watching a boat slowly meandering down a canal that I can take), but that also makes them mildly depressing. You caught my attention because you are a stunningly pretty young woman( you've got more than a bit of Diana Rigg/Emma Peale going on there.) But you're in the prime of your life floating down canals with apparently no real purpose for yourself. This should be the most vibrant, active exciting time of your life, and yet you're just lazily floating down canals with no more purpose than to find the next place to dock. Good luck with them, though. Hope you find whatever the heck it is you're looking for.

    • @bettyonaboat
      @bettyonaboat 2 дні тому

Hello, I completely understand why you would find the videos boring - I know they’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. However, I’d like to explain that these videos show a very small fraction of my life. I have a lot else going on that gives me purpose, so don’t worry about that!

    • @rzee1436
      @rzee1436 2 дні тому

@@bettyonaboat That's good, though unless this is only a weekend activity, I don't see how you'd have time for much else. But I'm glad to hear you're involved in a lot more things. Being on the west coast of the U S, it's a nice divergence to check out life on a narrow boat once in a while, but you're right, most of them are not all that interesting for very long, so I tend to lose interest quickly. Good luck with your "adventure."
