I remember watching a man at a local park blacksmith once, and he lit a cigarette by pulling out a piece of charcoal with his tongs and lifted it up to his lips to light it one handed, and I asked would it burn his face, and he said “I’m more concerned with the lung cancer than the burn”
“Pioneer Axe” is the title of the documentary (here on UA-cam) about the blacksmith shop that had most of the power hammers, grinding tools powered by water. Visited the site, only the ruins remain next to the Messalonskee Stream, Oakland, Maine.
If you don't mind I'd like your permission to share this with my smithing teacher and the rest of the pupils at my next class in a weeks time. I'm pretty sure none of them have heard it before, but they would appreciate it as nothing like it has been played during our lessons before.
Love it, i play the guitar a little. As a smith i play in the fire alot more. Would love to get the tablature , and do a rendition for some of my knife and tool making videos.
Watching that old blacksmith light his pipe from the axe he was forging made me chuckle. Because it would be something I would likely do.
