I used to love MTX (Mitek Group) woofers back in the late 1980's. I remember the MTZ Crankers (square magnet), Blue Thunders, and the Terminators. I ran different combinations of all of those and depending on the enclosure I put them into, they were always outstanding performing drivers. This is great. Actually tested forward and rear facing! Every system I had in a trunk sounded best rear facing and 6" from the trunk. That is some very good spl for bottom dollar with unexpected details. And I always went sealed unless it was some eights or something like that. Did a 142.7 with a single 15" xtr 3 dvc sealed on 500 watts in the 90's. Very nice video.
Love your channel. You are straightforward no bs and have info alot of audiophile or bass heads can use. Including the one's who are starting out and could use real reliable info. Thank you for keeping it 💯.
I had these subs for several years in my Chevy Caprice. I replaced them with Rockford Fosgate Punch series subs after the MTX box had finally blown itself apart after years of abuse. They hit hard and loud but don’t hit the lows as well as the RF subs do. The MTXs are so much more affordable but I had that Caprice completely decked out in RF speakers.
I just convinced my brother in-law to purchase this for $280 on Amazon instead of a more expensive setup that was going to run him around 700 bucks cause he only works part time and gets disability checks i was a little worried it wouldnt get him the sound he wanted but after setting up everything it actually slams pretty good n saved him some money to fix other things on his car
Fun fact . those banana plugs you're using on your quick connect rig is they are made to plug directly into the top of those round push terminals terminals that's actually why push terminals are angled like that. I like to use them on both ends of the speaker wire because it gives you something solid for that set screw in the amp. Love your videos ... no matter what piece of audio you're talking about
I'm rocking 9500 tens from 2010. And had a Thunder series amp from that time. Plenty of powah baby!! Then seemed like mtx just disappeared. Still have my 9500s and try to buy more whenever they pop up. Old-school and can be crazy expensive! 25 year old subs!
@@hypefxx9011 right! Unless you want to pay 700 bucks and be like everyone else... yeah there's better stuff out there now but people always forget the og bosses and ingenuity
Hey I been doing car audio for 20 years. Some of that I did it for a living and I got a system that will do 154DB in my daily. I got this set up for my wife’s car when she just wanted a little sound. I did these 2-12s with a 800.1 pioneer amp (MTX) and I put some mid grade pioneer mids and highs in her car and I was impressed with the money I had spent. I pushed them hard and even put my JL 1000.1 amp on them which pushed them harder and they kept pounding. At one point I was going to buy 2 more of these 12s and do a custom box just to prove what you can do with a budget build if you box, amp and wiring is on point. It’s not all about the subs. I’d give 5 stars for what I paid.
dcm speakers were done selling timeframes for a bit, and went full house speaker with the kx line. Kx12,kx-212, etc. then the series two models with turquoise stickers. Then away form those and back into home theatre speakers with Kevlar woofers. Then they were sold to mtx. Mtx took the kx-212 and made their own home speakers for a bit with carpet on the outside I believe. Close to the 212 maybe only two way. Then the subs. Dcm had two good eras, the old one, and the kx line - if you didn’t mind raw tweeters trading off for exceptional bass.
Always heard about mtx and wasnt too sure about them. Now i run 2) mtx thunder 9500 15s on a 5k and they hit so hard. Big boomy bass and still hasnt broken in yet. They did a 147 DB on music in a smaller box.
one of my best sounding setups was with MTX Black Gold 10s 8ohm subs. i ran them parallel 4ohm, it was hard to believe how hard they hit for 10s, and sound quality was great too.
I had a these in my car several years ago. Got them out of a used car from work. They beat pretty good until the amp took a shit. It was an mtx amp and it kept going into protect so i took them out. I was impressed with them for sure.
Love your reviews! I had a set two of 12" MTX Thunders in my 1992 Camaro back 25+ years ago. Glad they're still making "waves". Just picked up these Terminators in a sealed enclosure on sale and new for $116. I couldn't pass that up.

I've got two of the MTX sealed boxes in the back of my '06 Malibu SS. I started with one, but the two subs was just not enough. So I bought a second one, and it's a little bit closer to what I was looking for. They don't get extremely loud, and they don't get extremely low, but they do sound pretty decent. I'm running them off at JP8 wired at one ohm, and honestly I've had no issues with them. You also scrolled past my Amazon review which I thought was kind of cool.
It's so hard to find sealed enclosures anymore, which is why I partially believe this loaded enclosure sells so good. People today are more concerned with SPL numbers and how much flex they can get out of a sub before it blows. By far, you can't beat a sealed enclosure for sound quality, and as you demonstrated, the losses are not as bad as people think. Subs in sealed enclosures are more forgiving to over powering because they don't reach Xmax as easily. The only real worry is to not cook the voice coil with continous high power music. So glad you did this video!
I cannot beleive these are still out! Had these back in early 2000's, pushed by a 1200 watt mono infinity amp eventually switched them out to their 5500 thunder series subs. Plus had a 4 channel 800w infinity amp pushing 4 pioneer 6x9's. I think MTX under rated their specs, honestly. Always pushed mine hard. Absolutely loved that system. Everyone that heard it was always jealous how clean, crisp and loud it sounded.
Bought these back in 2016 for my first car and what started my costly hobby. The measly 1200w(400w at best) Boss amplifier I had ran these well and was super impressed until I decided that wasn't enough. Naturally 8 blown subs from various more expensive name brands (RF,Skar) and a few 2krms amps and hopping on the lithium battery wave I can say I'm happy those were my first to have owned and installed all by myself.
I had a fast modified 87 Turbo Buick in the late 90's with a single 12" MTX Black Gold in a sealed box, Alpine CD player, Linear power 4 channel amp bridged for the sub and some homemade kick panels with 5 1/4" infinity components. Capacitor the size of a tall boy. I read all the Car Stereo Review magazinss and I was building my system for sound quality, but man that sealed box 12 hit hard as hell and everything sounded great with that setup. I wanted some 6.5" mid basses in the doors but didn't want to cut them up. Those were the days man. Love the channel. I should get back into this stuff. Good to see MTX still in the game too.
I just bought one of these about 1 week ago. I have an ultra cheap Balva 250 amp powering it.😛 Even with that crappy amp, this sub box still kicks @ss!! I'm upgrading to a 500w Alpine on the way. 😁
My dad ended up finding an old Mtx tc5510 (twin 10 box) at the dump, red Canadian cones. Thing still works great, getting (110DbA) 138.6Db at 55hz in the front window an inch off the roof. It's only getting around 300w(Half rms). I'm pretty sure these are from 06, definitely a decent brand.
My friend bought 4 of these 12s. I built a box for them. I cant remember the cf but i tuned it to 40hz i think, for a street setup. I had a korean soundstream amp, i think it was the Rubicon model, it put out around 1700rms and 3000max. I will be honest for some cheap subs with a custom box and good amp, they actually get down. Thats been 3 years ago and its still in his Cherokee now.
I actually purchased this last year and paired it with a legis audio 500 watt 60 dollar amp. Put it in an 06 cobalt and it left plenty of room in the trunk. Wired at 2 ohm was pushing 400 watts and it was pretty awesome for what I paid.
I had these in a 93' 240sx back in my ricer days 😂 I blasted the poop out them with a 400rms pioneer amp never complained. If am not mistaken these are the equivalent of their thunder 5500 series.
I would say they relate to the thunder 4500 series I had both I had the original thunderform 2 12 4500 box and subs lasted me till about 2022 loud as hell I had the same terminator box shown and loved both but the vented thunderform box and 4500s were little louder I also had a 5500 and it's a whole different beast for what it is I wish I still had them but mtx seems to have dropped out of the car audio game for some reason they got rid of there 95 series 😢 I spoke with them they said there working on new stuff but I have yet to see it sadly I am and always will be a mtx guy but there not making stuff up to par with skar/sundown or any of the other big boys sadly and I know they can do it that's the crappy part
I know loyd ivey, from marble hill, mo which is where i grew up. He wasnt a nice person because he was bullied in high school, he told his bullies he would own this town. He ended up building multiple businesses and bought alot of houses from here and land. He died recently. But his audio mtx definitely lives on.
I bought the Rockville set up that was listed just below. Was probably like 5 years ago. Shipping sucked. Just threw it in a box and called it good. But I also bought it closer in price the the MTX so figured I either got dent and scratch or it got dented and scratched em route. Do to how they built the box the damage was insignificant as it didn't interfere with the box's function. Moved the set up to a different vehicle since purchase.
One day I will see a Blues Audio test, pre Linear power subs, I could not blow them up seem to remember them being 400 watt RMS and pushed 3000 through em and they laughed at it, put kickers, rockfords, and Orions in the dust. This was around 1991, later it seems it merged with Linear power, fantastic AB amps back in the day. Looks like they took an audiophile turn later. Loved those subs.
I used to have 2 MTX 9500 12’s back in the day on a Cadence ultradrive z7000 and they slammed!! I just hated the surrounds as they’d tear after a while but circuit city would always swap them out with no hassle. Nice to see other bass heads that are still in the game today! Rocking an SSA Evil 15” on a JP23V2 in a 1996 Camaro. The Gately 5.0cu ft box barely fits in the car 😂
I have a neighbor that has this in his jeep and it sounds way more expensive than it is! This was an awesome video! I would have liked to see you burp it at 800 watts though and see what the score was.
Very good price. Just have to worry about reliability. Maybe, if you want some sound, just be careful, make sure it's hooked up properly, and not clipped to death, and you should be fine
I had a mtx 2300 running two 10’ mtx 8000’s in my extended cab ford ranger. I had a rock chip on my windshield when I installed the system and it completely cracked the whole windshield the first time I cranked it up.
I have the 55 series and 75 series. I can tell you, they dont like power too long. You will definitely start smelling them. Both series sound great though. I have 12s and 15s
@warriorplutotrent3827 let me clarify. They start smelling within some mins if you running too much power. It's hard to explain here. They will be fine at close to rms
@jlee8262 oh ok. Ill pass on these then. I wanted to take them back to Nigeria with me next year. I have a single 10 inch kicker competition ⁴ ohms running on an 1500watt amp but inwamt something that hits harder. The setup in the video looks like it will fit my corolla though.
Ive been a die hard mtx audio fan my entire car audio career but i purchased these a few years ago with the 500 watt mtx audio amp that was rated and came with these subs and within the first few days of actually playing them inside of a car, I blew one of them the very first day of using them. I was very disappointed. But ive been onto bigger and better subs since.
50hz is likely very close to the resonant frequency of that sealed box sub combo. Nice little setup for someone. Ive been recommending the lil Jensens at walmart go into a sealed box... Makes a basic sub shine IMO
I think it might be prudent to do the SPL sweep at or near the rated wattage rather than at such a low power, that way you have a more accurate guess as to where it'll peak with high power. Or otherwise, wherever you find the mechanical power limit, back that off 25-50% and run it down from like 70-30hz unless it's a really low-tuned setup. Crazy to see another easy 140dB on the meter (I know it's a sinewave in the kick, but still) but I'm still hyped to see a "budget" 145+ on music on the dash.
@@BudgetBassHead I bet after a quick Google search, he never replies 😂 Awesome looking budget setup btw! I was building cabinets for people in '83 when Kickers and Bazookas started popping up... by '84 there were several "Truck Boxes" offered... Pioneer even got into that game... Sometime in the late 90's I gave up building cabinets for cars as the pre-fab ones were cheap and pretty well made. As a bass head, you give me some serious things to think about in this video. My only question is, what about the lows? A lot of the music I listen to is screwed and plays into the 20hz range. I'm thinking that the extra power needed to push low notes in a setup like that would blow the subs. Addendum: I do have to acknowledge the fact that you spoke about younger people looking for a cheaper way to get loud, so it makes sense to me. My 1st system was similar. 2 Pioneer Immp 12's in a sealed box on an Autotek Mean Machine 90. It was BANGN. You could here it from a few blocks away. Love your channel. You are straightforward no bs and have info alot of audiophile or bass heads can use. Including the one's who are starting out and could use real reliable info. Thank you for keeping it 💯.
Appreciate it!
Love your videos ... no matter what piece of audio you're talking about
I knew that, but others may not have; thanks for sharing! The banana plugs I'm using wasn't tight enough and I thought they would shake loose.
Love it
Tr45 15inch was a beast for $50 back in the days
Still got my mtx 9500 and JL w7. So hard to beat those .
@@olveramelinda hell first subs I ever had was mtx roadthunder two! Wasn't even old enough to drive! 125watts of raw fury! 😂
@@hypefxx9011 right! Unless you want to pay 700 bucks and be like everyone else... yeah there's better stuff out there now but people always forget the og bosses and ingenuity
The MTX Elimnator in the 80's pounded.
I have had this for a while and it's a banger. Solid box.
dcm speakers were done selling timeframes for a bit, and went full house speaker with the kx line.
Bought one last year and i haven't had a single problem. I love the sound and i don't even have it turned up to full tilt.
Always heard about mtx and wasnt too sure about them. Now i run 2) mtx thunder 9500 15s on a 5k and they hit so hard. Big boomy bass and still hasnt broken in yet. They did a 147 DB on music in a smaller box.
I’ve owned this since 2017 and it’s been nothing but great for me. I had it in two different cars and it still bumps! I recommend this as well 100%
Glad to hear you’re still enjoying it.
I bought that exact enclosure. Absolutely slammed.
one of my best sounding setups was with MTX Black Gold 10s 8ohm subs. i ran them parallel 4ohm, it was hard to believe how hard they hit for 10s, and sound quality was great too.
That's awesome!
A prebuilt like that is great for the budget basshead. It's not going to rumble the neighborhood but it will provide good sounding bass on the cheap.
You can definitely get some loudness out of this setup!
@@BudgetBassHead i just bought a 2013 300 srt and i want sum subs that gives u Clean,Tight,Accurate Punchy Bass that hits hard on the lows with the volume down or just mid level bcus i dont plan on turnin the volume up all da way alot just want deep clean bass where my music n words are still crystal clear while the subs playing.....I dont want that trunk rattling noise just Strong Tight bass do you have any suggestions i was thinking of going with 2 10" american bass xfl, memphis M7 or Mojos or either 2 12" Kicker comp Rs, 2 12" P3s, 2 12" memphis M7s, or just 1 12" Kicker L7s, 1 12" kicker comp Q, or 1 12" Alpine R2s..... Which subs do you think will give me Great clean sound quality and still has that Tight deep accurate bass bcuz right now im going 2 keep my stock radio and just get the car play adapter to give my screen the ability to use car play n apps like youtube n internet.......
I was generally surprised by their performance
This makes me miss having my old stereo system. 2 12" Kenwood speakers and a 600w Boss amp. I wanna get a new setup now!
I just bought one of these about 1 week ago. I have an ultra cheap Balva 250 amp powering it.😛 Even with that crappy amp, this sub box still kicks @ss!! I'm upgrading to a 500w Alpine on the way. 😁
You're going to love it with the new amp!
Wow bringing me back to the glory days.
Ran 4 15 inch MTX Terminators back in the 90's with Kenwood amps in a juiced S10. You could hear me coming long before you saw me. Good times.
My new favorite Channel!! Keep it up bro.
Thanks! I'm glad you like the videos.
That's a great comparison.
Nice I had a 93 too turbocharged the ka24de I had the square kicker 12 and some random amp
I still have my 240sx its a 90 but it's mint, with two tens on 6k, I build subs. And it's a small hatch lol.
I know loyd ivey, from marble hill, mo which is where i grew up. He wasnt a nice person because he was bullied in high school, he told his bullies he would own this town. He ended up building multiple businesses and bought alot of houses from here and land. He died recently. But his audio mtx definitely lives on.
Thanks for sharing
@@Eric-69 Well if you need some property in Lutesville (yea I’m that old) let me know :)
The dust particles were vibrating 😂 16yrs old, driving a 66 impala, 2 mtx 12s just rattling the fiznuck outta that big ass trunk! Miss those days.
It’s good to hear you got good use out of your setup!
I used to have the thunder 5500-4 back in 07 and they were my fave subs ever. I haven’t tried the new model but now I will.
I'm loving the history of it all!
I had Badass MTX amp back in 97 on a 15" kicker solo baric in a band pass box. Sounded amazing for 750 watts. Man I miss that setup.
Ran 4 MTX 9500 15's on two TE 1501D's back in the day.
Man I had two 12 MTX blue thunders with a precision power amp back in the day. Great stuff.
MTX was the bomb!
I was messing with these 25 years ago. Good stuff
I've used the ported version of this set up and put some kicker subs in the enclosure and they had a great all around bass sound
It's hard to argue with a classic.
back in early 00's i remember rocking a pair of 12" mtx thunder 6000's on a sealed enclosure and maaan they hit so clean n loud
I have a neighbor that has this in his jeep and it sounds way more expensive than it is! This was an awesome video! I would have liked to see you burp it at 800 watts though and see what the score was.
I agree, 800 watts would be a great test!
I had a 90’s MTX band pass box with 2-12” subs. Off a Rockford 225
Thanks for the tips!
How long? They won't last a two hour drive?
That sounds like a coil material problem
@warriorplutotrent3827 let me clarify. They start smelling within some mins if you running too much power. It's hard to explain here. They will be fine at close to rms
@jlee8262 oh ok. Ill pass on these then. I wanted to take them back to Nigeria with me next year. I have a single 10 inch kicker competition ⁴ ohms running on an 1500watt amp but inwamt something that hits harder. The setup in the video looks like it will fit my corolla though.
I always wondered how these subs would sound in a ported box. Maybe that could be your next video.
Those are very efficient speakers. All you need is a good 600watt amp. and it would last a long time. And sound great
Ive been a die hard mtx audio fan my entire car audio career but i purchased these a few years ago with the 500 watt mtx audio amp that was rated and came with these subs and within the first few days of actually playing them inside of a car, I blew one of them the very first day of using them. I was very disappointed. But ive been onto bigger and better subs since.
my first subs were 2 12" Mtx thunder 4000 series glad they are still bumpin
I appreciate your honesty. I have been thinking about these subs just to start me out.
It's a great option for a budget build.
Had some terminators back in the 90s and they were solid but then so was kicker in that era
I agree.
This is the second video I watched on this channel today. Well done
Thanks for dropping by!
These are wired to a 2ohm load. It is imperative you get the right amp and wire it up correctly.
Didn't want to heat up the coils.
It was actually Steve Irby, the owner of Kicker/Stillwater designs who made the first mobile enclosure.
Just research it bro. MTX Audio created the first mobile audio enclosure in 1984.
@@BudgetBassHead I bet after a quick Google search, he never replies 😂 Awesome looking budget setup btw! I just ordered two of them, gonna mount them in the backseat floorboard of my truck end to end. (1990 F150 ext cab, backseats removed) I love the accuracy of sealed enclosures. Thanks for the recommendation! They need to be sponsoring you or something for all the business you're bringing them lol Cheers! 🍻
@@jasonhobbs311 As someone how knows Steve (I was just with him in Dallas accepting a life time achievement award for my father) I bet he would never claim this. He is a honest man.
@@JohnathanIvey-td2vm I had a pair of Jensen Bass speakers in tuned cabs in my 64 Barracuda in 1976... Later in 1980 I started toying around with IB setups... DONE were the days when ya built an enclosure, then went shopping for woofers that matched what ya built...... if you were smart. Every car a little different... one off handmade... $$$$$.... Some of my best customers. What a time it was. STILL! BDBD/2024
In the early 2000s I had Infiniti I 30 with this set up and I was happy
Yeah they were out in high school and it's good to see mtx still kicking but kicker were my subs of choice and punch amps were my amps of choice
Rear firing into the trunk. Try moving the enclosure 6 to 8 inchs from the lid and run test
First sub set up with a budget planet audio amp, banged pretty good!
Had a buddy back in the day that had a 12 MTX Blue Thunder 12 in a ext cab S10. That thing hounded
Remember the MTX "blue thunder" from back in the day, good times
Stuntn on my friends with the wood grain Pioneer stereo with the wood grain remote. Bringing back memories on a ninja. Ya, starter systems like this are great until the guy that comes from a more "well off" family pulls up with 3 JL AUDIO 15's in an extended cab Chevy Silverado pulls up. Don't ask me how I know. 😂😂😂😂😂
These are not meant for the low lows. It's a balanced box. Tight and responsive.
@@BudgetBassHead Yes sir, I get it. It's a great starter system. It truly is a good place to start.
My first build was a mono MTX Road Thunder Pro 12" powered by a Rockford Series One 400 watt amp. 1992 or 3? Memories.
Mtx was my first sub❤ loved them back in the day
Like my first car box.
My last 2 boxes are like this one.
What replaced my first box was a custom 4x12" enclosure for my old fox body stang.😢😊❤
For a while I was homebound and built a monster home stereo system with like 30 speakers 😮.
Also a couple raggedy rides in between running my Sony xplode deck and a couple 8" & 12" home speakers.
My last best mobile setup was 1,600w total roughly with 2x 12" Kenwood & 4x8" Sony.
The rearview mirror turned into a kangaroo 🦘
It didn't just hit hard, it sounded good.
Stay pounding 💪
I'm just not a headphone guy!! 😂
My next setup I definitely want something closer to double everything!!!
MTX had a facility in Monroe Wisconsin and Warren Illinois. I worked at one of them years ago.
That's really cool 😎
Just wanna say that's an absolute genius way to connect and disconnect subs quickly🤯🤯😎😎😎
I am def impressed they didnt smoke from the multiple 4k bursts especially the 60hz lol. With them being sealed they prob have pretty good SQ too, tight and punchy.
Yeah, these subs are surprisingly tough.
I’ve had terminators before nice sq deep bass I like the mtx sledgehammer boxes better because I like ported.
Seriously I’ve had a MTX 280 amp and had it pushing 2-12 inch MTX Woofers. Was heard by a Police officer a Block away and he just gave me a warning…My head unit was an Alpine detachable face and Boston acoustics and that baby was wicked I blew away Rockford Fosgate and Infinity systems…All for around 800.00 to $900.00 only
Now I may try Alpine and Kicker and I just want clean clear sound now that I’m older…Maybe 10s or 8s debating on Kicker comp subs or Alpine
Amp will most likely be a 400 watt or 800 watt and mids kicker Head Unit still thinking about it between Alpine and Kenwood 💪🏽👍🏽👍🏽😎🔊🔊🔊🔊
