I want no part of this. Really don’t know who it’s for outside of die hard nostalgia collectors. I mean the NES classic console was the coolest idea and they could have extended it by releasing a new version with different ROMs, but speedrun challenges of snippets of games? You can add that to the NES online service. Not paying $30 to do little challenges from the games instead of playing the whole game.
I ordered it as it looks like a fun physical set to have in the collection. I would have gladly paid an extra $20-40 more for working Nes physical cart that played in the Nes and not just the shell but oh well.
The one thing Nintendo did right with this was value my time as a worker and parent. Being able to consume some of these in 5 mins or less is peak adulting with our time.
Id say the physical is definitely worth it, maybe the digital is if you can get it at a discount. It does make me yearn for an NES Remix 3 though. Hopefully this time they make a Super Nintendo version.
The whole thing about the HISTORY of the games is super important. Most people don't realize that Arcade Mario was a single screen game because the cartridge baord could physically not scroll. Most people don't know Super Mario could only scroll right because the board was PHYSCIALLY unable to scroll the screen left. Most people don't know that it was a big deal that US Mario 2 that it could scroll both left and right. Pinball was a big deal showing that it could scroll UP and DOWN, while having a big pinball board. Both Mario 2 and Pinball needed a PHYSICAL solder point to be activated in order for the effect to even work. Metroid and Kid icarus were released at the same time because Nintendo was excited they had a chip that could scroll in FOUR directions. Mario3 was a massive deal because they finally added diagonals to allow the flying. Like, there is a massive history of how important some of these games are to gaming PERIOD, and Nintendo refuses to go into that.
13:53 oh God Pat I love that game too! they should have made that permanent just like in Japan they made a physical copy of Tetris 99 if they did a physical copy of Mario 35, I would have bought it in a heartbeat I don't care how much I would have to pay. I still have it on my Nintendo switch even though it's not workable anymore I just don't have the heart to delete it
Or better yet they should do like Japan did they made a physical copy of Tetris 99, but they should make a physical copy of Super Mario 35 I would definitely pay for that!
It's a cash grab 100%. If they actually included a functioning NES cartridge with the original NWC roms on it then there'd be no question about the value.
The cost of Nintendo doing a one off NES cart would be way too high, most of the components required have likely been out of production on a large scale for a couple decades now.
18:26 - the thing about those controllers is that you can buy them from the Nintendo store (I got mine in Osaka a few weeks ago) - I just had to prove I had a Nintendo Switch Online account. The price for them was insane I ended up buying two of them and two of the Super Famicom controller. I'm sure there's a proxy service somewhere that caters to a western audience.
Can confirm. When I was there last August, I picked up a pair of the Famicom, one Super Famicom, and one of the 6 button Genesis ones. They literally walk you through what they need to see on your Nintendo account to confirm you're allowed to buy them. Took less than 2 minutes.
I don’t think having the full game of these NES games really add value to a 30 or $60 package. Most of us already have multiple copies of these NES games and really each time you have a cop you’re just getting diminished returns because you already have it I would rather have versions of these NES games or enhanced versions
Former NOA employees confirmed that the mini consoles were launched because they had to fill the gap that a delay in releasing the switch left. This is basically the same thing but for switch 2
There is alot that I like about this releas of the NWC NES edition; like the 8 player local mode. My only gripe is the missed oppoortunity of hvaing FULL SPEED RUN playthrough of all the games. I would totally set up a party where me an 8 friends speed run the entire Zelda and Mario games in one afternoon. It woul be so simple to implement and it irks me that they just don't give us the full games with these features as an incentive. From my understanding; it seems that the challenges are more than just speed runs; but I fully agree with Ian; that they should just sell us their dang retro games to keep already; especially since it looks like they are going for full foward compatiblity with the next Switch and future Switch generations moving foward. Would also love the Digital Eclipse treatment of infro and history. I also read a fine print somewhere that they will add more via DLC; but we have no idea what that entails and if it is just more challenges, when we want the full games.
I bought it, but it is sad they did not make a functioning NES cart. Everyone would have paid more for a functioning NES cart from Nintendo. Hopefully the shell is real spec so we can swap the guts inside with real guts.
They probably don't have the schematics to make it run properly on a nes. And a nes cartridge is quite a bit bigger than a Switch game case, so not sure how much bigger this collection was made to put in the nes cartridge they put in. Is it to size or shrunk down a bit?
I Definitely agree with Ian that they should include the full roms and Pat's point of having other challenges besides speed running. I also wonder if the challenges will chain together different games ( like the original world championship) but give you a combined total time of completion.
I recommend anyone check out the nes remix challenge game on the 3ds. Very similar to this and such a fun game. Will kinda suck if this is all just time based challenges. Nes remix had all sorts of challenges like pat/ian were talking about, kill a certain amount of enemies, collect a item without getting hit, etc
Age with Ian. The current Nintendo president clearly lacks the passion and innovation of previous Nintendo presidents, as this has been a recurring theme for years now, the absolute bare minimum from Nintendo.
Pat just collecting gold carts man. You guys make some good points though, and honestly to me it just looks like a watered down NES remix using the NWC branding to sell to collectors, which it will either fortunately or unfortunately.
I honestly disagree about the collector package. Seems pretty low effort and uninteresting to me. Meanwhile, the JP collector edition comes with two joycons that look like Famicom controllers. There's a reason why that one sold out immediately and you can still pre-order the US version. edit: Actually looks like Amazon JP got more in stock.
The point you guys brought up @7:52 is exactly why I haven't pre-ordered a physical copy. If it has the full games I'd love to have that whole kit in my collection. But if it's just the speedrunning bits then that's stupid.
As a parent of a pre-teen, Ian is right. My kid calls N64 8 bit. Kids today know Mario 1 the same way they know pong. But they don’t know much unless they’re already interested in it. But it really is a whole new world out there today.
@@cyxceven Not how it works. You do not have kids clearly..... nothing is _"ez"_ about raising them. They are no programmable robots... they have their own little personalities and minds. While you can physically try to make kids listen to things - unless they are interested in learning something - you can't force them to care enough to retain this stuff. It would be like your father or mother forcing you to learn about the Rat Pack and 1960 baseball because they grew up caring about it. You instead just wanted to play Game boy and read comics. And once they are as old as my teenage son, they don't care and you can't make them (in one ear, and out the other).
10:18-10:23: The 6 seconds of enraged silence says more than needs to about it. 💯agree with Ian here. Atari 50 (Digital Eclipse gold master series) are raising the bar on enhanced ports/re-releases.
This is it right here. N needs to shelve that game long enough for fans to thirst for this when it releases. Doesn’t make sense business-wise to have both available at the same time.
Just re-release NES Remix for the Switch. I love those games, and it would be nice to have those on the Switch. I have no idea why Nintendo got rid of Mario 35. That was so much fun. Nintendo tends to shoot themselves in the foot a lot.
Meh - considering that the JP release includes a pair of the Nintendo Online Famicom controllers, the NA release still seems a bit flat… That said, I still preordered because it’s a Nintendo published title, and I usually get those anyway. Nintendo Online controllers are $30 for the pair, so it might have made sense to include those. Now, if they sold those NES slipcovers separately in the online Nintendo shop, they’d probably make a killing on that.
Nes edition can’t be anymore of a cash grab than these Jean commercials in the front of this video. If you are going after the cash, why can’t Nintendo ????
I agree with Ian. This is just a lazy cash grab. Pat was way too apologist of Nintendo on this one. If Sega or other company would've done this exact same package he would've been harder on it.
I agree with Pat that this package is for the old heads like us (I'm 40) who grew up with these games. The guy in the commercial is roughly in that age range versus other commercials that show younger people playing Switch. Also, younger gamers don't care about or like old school games generally speaking. Look at the backlash $50-$60 sidescrollers like Metroid Dread and the recent Prince of Persia game got for their prices and for being sidescrollers. This is totally a dad/mom nostalgia product.
Will it be playable offline as well though? I see little point in buying the physical cartridge, despite the extra chachkis, other than saving memory space.
Nintendo is really good at teasing their fans with things and really bad about giving them what they actually want. Remember NES remix from a decade ago? Here's something that'll make you really miss that game.
Because nobody is expecting it to be. It's 2024. Nintendo isn't even slightly interested in sourcing boards and chipsets for physical cartridges for an almost 40 year old console. It's so much easier to manipulate ROM builds of these retro games to make them do different things and put a plastic molding of a retro cartridge together and call it good. I feel like the display cart not being playable is an absolute given at this point. PS: I'm not saying that boards and chips for reproduction NES carts don't exist, I know they're out there...but Nintendo's got bigger fish to fry than getting themselves involved in mass producing any portion of that at this point. I'd rather have them focus their manufacturing resources on building larger-capacity cartridges for the next console/Switch successor than wasting resources on a playable NES cartridge.
Uh, yes, selling what is essentially a bunch of game modes, using nostalgia alone, and charging ANY amount of money for it is the very definition of a cash grab. I hope beyond hope that it fails miserably, and gamers actually don't fall for a cash grab for once. Also, that's one of the worst collector's editions ever made.
Do Nintendo not own the rights to Kung Fu? Seems like it would work well for speed running in a collection like this but it still hasn’t even been put into NSO.
This would be IMMEDIATELY worth it if they packed in NES Remix 1 and 2. I'm buying it as a collector's piece, but I have been considering if its even worth that for $60. Japan is atleast getting TWO Famicom controllers!
I agree the full ROMs should be playable and that was my initial disappointment...... but then I got thinking..... don't we all have half a dozen ways to play these games to our heart's content anyway?
Not my cup of tea but I’m still thankful Mario never had a game where he was animated with hyper realism called simply _Mario_ with the advent of some new console.

I'm going to get it. Looks fun to play. I enjoyed NES remix. Just wish the NES cart had the same game as the real 1990 NWC cart that plays on the NES.
I want no part of this. Really don’t know who it’s for outside of die hard nostalgia collectors. I preordered the Deluxe version earlier this month. The NES was my second console and I love it.

I ordered it as it looks like a fun physical set to have in the collection. I would have gladly paid an extra $20-40 more for working Nes physical cart that played in the Nes and not just the shell but oh well.
It does just feel like NES Remix but without the remix levels.
I'm honestly surprised that they didn't report that or make a new one when the switch was released.
If they did something like SMB 35 and make it a speed run battle royale and the difficulty increases until there’s a winner that would be interesting.
The one thing Nintendo did right with this was value my time as a worker and parent. Being able to consume some of these in 5 mins or less is peak adulting with our time.
Pat already has the real thing, of course he wouldn't see any problem with this.
I think Pat should bring it to Pawn Stars for a follow up video :)
That show is basically dead now. It would be even funnier to have it WATA graded and slabbed. lol.
Id say the physical is definitely worth it, maybe the digital is if you can get it at a discount.
It does make me yearn for an NES Remix 3 though. Hopefully this time they make a Super Nintendo version.

It is most definitely a cash grab but I am digging the Challenges being displayed in the Nintendo Power font. Nostalgia button pressed with that one.
Well , they sound kind of salty because they paid all that money for the Cartridge when The same thing for cheaper price On the Switch
Highly doubtful Pat’s gold cart will plunge in value with this release. lol
