This entire battle was designed keeping in mind that Shalltear had to be killed twice because her creator, Ainz's friend Peroronchino, had given her an Instant Resurrection Item, which luckily doesn't also restore mana. That is why we see her intact at the end of the chapter. From the beginning Ainz had many disadvantages. To begin with, his game character was not designed for PVP matches but mainly for his own entertainment and ROL. In DOTA terms he would be a “Support” who can also play as a “Semi-Carry”. Instead, Shalltear is a pure “Carry” designed for combat against many players. The only one in charge of defending not one but 3 floors and the strongest of all the Guardians. Also, as a vampire, Shalltear is quite resistant to Ainz's necromancy, but she can also do holy magic that is quite effective against Liches. I clarify that in the Ygdrassil LORE that is based on Dungeons & Dragons there are good and bad gods. Shalltear gains her abilities as a priestess of a vampire god named Caniabel. Then there is the problem that Ainz is a summoner and his best combos are with creatures he can use as a shield. But since Shalltear has that life-sucking spear, he can't risk using them because it would be like feeding her. Also, Yggdrasil's gameplay mechanics were designed in such a way that a player could never fully protect themselves from all of its weaknesses. Ainz is weak against fire and holy element, but can only protect against one. As if that wasn't enough, Shalltear's creator gave her some "Skills" that precisely help her with her main weaknesses, such as the Negative Impact Shield or the Purifying Spear. These are not powers that she should naturally have and they help her to overcome opponents who have some advantage over her. Fortunately, there is a limit to the number of these Skills that can be used per day. Much of Ainz's plan for this battle was designed to get Shalltear to spend them all before the end. Finally, Ainz felt guilty about the current situation, so he decided to punish himself by changing his divine equipment to a lower quality one, which further increased his disadvantage. So, yes, this battle was very difficult and it is a great triumph that it has reached this point. Of course, it's not that Ainz is weak either, it's just that his powers don't work well against Shalltiaer's. But still he is a pure mage who managed to win a lot of PVP at the time, although at first, he always had to lose a few rounds until he learned the best method to win. Also, in Yggdrassil the limit of spells that could be learned was 300, but Ainz got a special class that allowed him to learn more than 700 spells. We saw a bit of this early on, in the buff number he put on before he started fighting. Shalltear's Einherjar is a construct-type avatar almost visually identical to Shalltear. This Avatar cannot use magic and some of the abilities of the original, but his equipment and stats are the same. Ainz's greatest achievement was executing his own trump card well. “The Goal of All Life is Death” is a Skill that he obtained by taking out all the trophies of his class, Liche Overlord. Any Undead like him have abilities that cause "Instant Death" on an enemy, but naturally there are many ways to defend against this magic, both with items and resistances. Someone like Shalltear naturally has immunity to these kinds of abilities, whether it be full or partial. But “The Goal of All Life is Death” allows you to overcome all those barriers, as long as the instant death effect occurs in exactly 12 seconds. This is a very difficult thing to achieve, but Ainz is one of the 13% of players who have perfectly mastered the art of synchronizing spells. So, the magic used against Shalltear is called “Cry of the Banshee” which kills everything that touches the sound within a large area of land. But the effect is enhanced by the ability "The Goal of All Life is Death" and that is why, according to the novel, literally everything died: The creatures, the Einherjar clone, Shalltear, the earth, the plants and even the air... Everything died. And so, in the end the battlefield turned into a desert. Here I leave you the fragment of the novel, where the effects of this terrible magic are better described: [Ainz had 60 levels of job classes, and one of them was quite special. It was a class that was very rare even in YGGDRASIL, held only by a small number of players. The class in question was called “Eclipse”. The class description stated: “Only an Overlord who is truly dedicated to the pursuit of Death may enter this class, which swallows up all life like an eclipse.” The move Ainz was planning to use was one which was only available after reaching the maximum level (5th) in Eclipse, a skill which could only be used once every 100 hours. It was the trump card of the Eclipse class. That skill was called [The Goal Of All Life Is Death]. A woman’s wail echoed through the air. This cry carried with it an instant-death effect. Ainz had used various skills to augment this spell, so its potency was greater than normal and harder to resist. Still, it was useless against Shalltear and the Einherjar construct. Tick. The clock face behind Ainz ticked, and its hands slowly moved as the spell took effect. Ainz glanced at Shalltear in the distance as his health dwindled under the onslaught of the Einherjar, and at the same time he felt quite disappointed. “...So I can’t finish this cleanly, huh? Damn you, Peroroncino, did you build her specifically to counter me? To think you actually gave her a resurrection item! Dammit!” Ainz cursed his guildmate within his heart. Ainz frantically struggled to avoid the attacks of the Einherjar. After 12 seconds had passed, the hour hand had completed a full circuit, and it pointed to the heavens once more. Then, Ainz’s trump card took effect. In that moment: The world died. This was not metaphorical. Everything died. The Einherjar evaporated into white mist as it couched its lance, and dispersed before Ainz’s eyes. Even a homunculus with no concept of life died instantly. Shalltear’s familiars shared the same fate, unable to resist the destruction which overtook them. That was not all. Even the air - which was not even alive to begin with - fell into death. For over 100 meters in all directions, the air was no longer breathable. If any living creature tried to respire within that area, their lungs would be corrupted by the deadly air, and they would die. Neither did the land escape the embrace of death. The terrain in a 100 meter radius was instantly transmuted into sand. Only Shalltear and Ainz could move in this world, where only death remained. Ainz’s trump card, [The Goal Of All Life Is Death] strengthened the effect of instant death magic and skills. Thus augmented, those instant-death effects could bypass any immunities or resistance and kill their targets after a certain amount of time had passed. One could resist it by using a resurrection effect on themselves within 12 seconds, as Shalltear had. The air and the land had also died because of that effect. In YGGDRASIL, the environment would not have succumbed, but in this new world, the effects were quite appropriate to the skill. All things were equal in the face of Death. Ainz himself was taken aback by this strange effect. The land had not died like this in YGGDRASIL. He could not help but shake his head after witnessing the effects of the game’s powers in the real world. However, Ainz swallowed back his surprise. The pride in his heart would not permit him to show any sign of shock. Instead, he acted as though this had been part of his plan. Carrying himself with the arrogance that befitted a ruler, he gently asked the sole survivor: “What do you think, after experiencing the power that can slay even the unliving?”] Well that's it. I hope I have been helpful. Thanks you two for reacting!
You might have figured this out already but what happened at the end with the clock was not time magic but this: Ains used his special class skill he got from his overlord class and that he can only use with a cooldown of 100 hours called "the goal of all life is death" wich makes his death-type spells ignore all resistences and boost their death chance to 100%. he then used "widen magic" to increase the range of his spell "cry of the banshee". "cry of the banshee" is an area of effect instand death spell. the combination killed everything whithin its radius whith a 100% chance, including the plants while completely ignoring shalltears resistances. its a bit confusing in the anime.
Iirc, the cooldown for "the goal of all life is death" is 100 hours. But, I'm just being pedantic. Sorry. The actual cooldown time of the skill doesn't really matter. I was gonna make this comment if someone else hadn't because the anime usually shows the effects of the spells/skills used really well but generally fails to explain them all too often. This is such a cool combination that he uses but, in my opinion, you'd never be able to appreciate it as much or Ainz as much without the explanation. Thank you.
This killed not just until plants but it killed even earth and air making anyone living who entered that area to die even by breathing of that killed air
Ainz already used his trump card, it was the goal of all life is death, it's a skill that strengthens instant death magic to the point that it'll kill even unkillable things like air, ground and even the dead. Ainz specializes in summoning and instant death magic, Shalteer will just turn his summons into her healing potions and she has instant death immunity as she's already dead, plus she's a Valkyrie and can use holy and fire magic which work wonders against undead like Ainz. Basically she's the counter to Ainz and she was made with that in mind as a joke from Peroronchino. Peroronchino (Shalteer's creator) was good friends with Ainz and created Shalteer to both love Ainz's appearance and be the exact counter to him. Shalteer being the strongest floor guardian is also a very important reason as why Ainz is having such trouble with her, there are less than 4-5 people in the entirety of Nazarik who can fight her on somewhat equal footing
Shalltear was created as a min-maxed pvp 1vs1 build. Thats why she is so strong. + She hard counters Ains class and build. He is more of a Roleplaying "Master of Death" build. He was still strong in pvp but he lost to really good builds. He was more higher mid tier in pvp because of his skill in the game.
My favorite overlord episodes and one of my favorite parts in the light novel. So, the robe he's wearing here has high holy elememt resistance something Shalltear doesn't know and he's actually feeding her false information this whole fight, making her spam holy element attacks while pretending that fire didn't hurt him etc.. The other reason is simply in case of defeat or in the case that a player is in control / watching he wouldn't lose his divine level gear.
The odds that Cocytus gave for the fight, 3 to 7 against Ains, is because while he is a player it's not impossible for NPCs to be stronger than players. The one said to be the strongest character in the entire series (we haven't met them yet) is said to have a 7 to 3 chance to beat even Touch Me in a fight, Touch Me being one of the best PvPers in the world while it was a game, and a person even Ains has never once beaten in PvP. Cocytus gave his estimate based on his lack of knowledge about how much Ains actually knows about Shalltear, and just how prepared and experienced Ains is at what is essentially a PvP battle. Technically speaking Shalltear is "stronger" than Ains, but he's infinitely more experienced at dealing with, and preparing for, such situations and has a wealth of knowledge that she simply doesn't have in regards to it. Shalltear herself is one of the strongest NPCs in Nazerick in terms of combat, she is specifically designed to be a powerhouse in 1v1 fights, and more specifically her skills directly counter Ains' build, he's weak to holy damage and she focuses on that, and using undead which he relies heavily on to supplement his strength and guard him would only feed her self healing lance, among other things. Shalltear was often used to take out solo players that tried to cause trouble in or around Nazerick while it was still a game, confident that she'd beat pretty much most players 1v1. Shalltears Trump Card that he mentions, Einherjar, creates a perfect copy of herself (another reason she's so strong 1v1) While it can't use any magic or skills it perfectly copies her stats and equipment, and being built as a melee fighter type mainly this skill specifically is super strong when used by her. The clothes change for Ains, to the plain looking robes, will be revealed next episode =p The Ability Ains used, The Goal of All Life is Death, is his trump card that he gets from his 5 class levels in Eclipse, a very hard and specific job class to obtain that he specially built for. It causes all instant death spells to bypass EVERY resistance and nullification effect vs death and guarantees the death spell will succeed, he used it in conjunction with Cry of the Banshee, a massive AOE death spell that kills everything in it's range, even the earth and air, hence why the land around them became essentially desert. The only counter to TGOALID is any item or spell that instantly revives you after dying, Shalltear had one and that's why she "survived" it.
Ainz-sama got lot more spells then a normal player, they have around 300-ish and he got well over 700+ thanks to his trait called Dark wisdom. so he got all his main spells plus a lot of 'flavor/useless' spells as he got spare room for them.
Momonga’s character build is max level but made for Role Play purposes and not optimized for raw combat. Fair Blind Fight, where both parties know nothing about each other? 9-1 Shaltear wins Fair Fight and both parties have full knowledge? 7-3 Shaltear Wins Boss Battle, Shaltear can do nothing till Momonga throws the first shot and she only has superficial knowledge of his abilities? 4-6 Shaltear still more likely to win. It’s going to be rough but not impossible
So information of the day. There arent really any missed one that i know of since this is a mainly a fight episode so lets go with others. So ainz here was waiting shaltear wich is a complete counter toward him so he had to overprepare a lot to stand a chance. Now that you seen enough of her fighting i can tell you that shaltear is considered the strongest floor guardian. Thought i always see the community arguing between her, mare and pandora actor but she is the one the most agree on being the strongest. She is basically build to be a raid boss basically impossible to be defeated in 1v1 so ainz going alone is a huge dissadvantage already especially considering that ainz never constructed an actual build for his character and mainly made him to roleplay thought unlike other players that can memorize at best 200 speel ainz has 700 wich is his real strenght. As far as i can probably guess just from having watched the anime this is probably the hardest chanlegge ainz will ever face unless someone else could give him a fight.
Ains tweaked his character build in the game so he could memorize over 700 spells, so give him prep time and he'll max out a combat load. Ains is all about information he did intensive research on his opponents in Yggdrasil before engaging in PvP matches. The floor guardians each have a floor to guard except Shalltear who is assigned the first three floors to defend.
14:22 this magic is not exactly what it sounds in English and it looks. Yeah, Shalltear is the 2nd strongest. Ainz power is only due to his Magic and MP. Also he is not even using his world items. But he is still guild member and not NPC so he knows more about the items and powers.
This entire battle was designed keeping in mind that Shalltear had to be killed twice because her creator, Ainz's friend Peroronchino, had given her an Instant Resurrection Item, which luckily doesn't also restore mana. That is why we see her intact at the end of the chapter.

Skill! The Goal Of All Life Is Death!!
All the Floor Guardians & some other NPC's is level 100 like Ainz. So, if you judge based on level, their strength are similar.

Ainz is actually alot weaker than most floor guardians
all of the floor guardians are stronger then Ainz in terms of pure strength
