      One good question I saw was, “why leather filler instead of cork?”

    • @hewies
      @hewies 8 місяців тому +2

      Those boots look amazing. I have about a 1in discrepancy between my left and right legs after a motorcycle accident. I do not want to wear one boot with an extra thick sole, but that means being able to fit in an orthotic. I have tried wearing regular boots but the bridge across the top of the foot is really tight. I even tried getting leather softener and some shoe trees to try and stretch it out, but it's still super tight. Do you have any recommendations for either high quality boots that would accommodate tall orthotics or any suggestions for getting regular boots to work?

    • @JoeyDecay

      I was curious about the type of leather used as the filler, if it was full grain and roughed or what.

    • @klausbecker4745
      @klausbecker4745 8 місяців тому +2

      nice touch with the reinforcement for the gemming! did you rewelt just for this? or also a cleaner look on the sole stitching? and do you use a softer leather for the filler than the shank or why is it two different pieces?

      I’d love to see you guys take a pair of Thursday presidents, and upgrade all of the materials in the insole to real leather, ditch the cork for veg tanned leather, and add gussets in the tongue, with dainite outsoles. Pretty much upgrade the parts of the boot that they went cheap on with leather.
      I have a pair of those shoes, love them, and want to do all of that work to upgrade them when a resold is due.

      @@channelchannelchannelchannelthis is ridiculous. I'm about as anti-gun as you can get, but to then see a business in a country where they make such a fuss about being all about free business and enterprise, and with such abhuge demographic of lawful gun owners, that an artisan shop can't feel free to cater and advertise ostensibly quality goods to a potential customer base for fear of repercussions is so silly. Not like they're selling the guns themselves, and to just anybody. If I don't want a gun in my life, it sure as hell won't be a leather strap what pushes me over the edge. So sad to see these guys working hard to then have to jump around such things - all as a joke, obvs 😏😒

      Because when you tighten speed hooks they pull the leather and make it bend sideways when it is supposed to pull straight in. I have these and a pair of iron rangers with speed hooks. They aren't near as durable and give less control of the tension around the boots. That's why they haven't gone to them from the factory.

      probably because the legacy part is that its the same boot from 1952. the new 10877 work boot version has some slight changes, mainly just different color eyelets, so they might eventually go to a speed hook but the legacy boot hopefully will never change.

    I really like the cobbling videos. I think it might be neat if you made an "Appocalypse Resole" video, and resole a boot with a piece of tire rubber like you guys described as possible for the ND3. Lots of YT cobblers putting Dr. Soles on boots, I'd love to see a boot resoled with a truck tire or a dairy stall mat or something.

    Rose Anvil has inspired me to upgrade my existing boots.
    Currently I'm working on making a 2003 pair of Dr Martens usable again (the lasting boards are worn out and the soles are slick) but to make it as easy as possible, I'm dropping in everything through the top without cleaving the soles.
    My grand idea is to make insoles from full grain leather with carbon fiber (to add support and simulate a shank) insoles on bottom with cork sandwiched in between.
    For right now, I dropped in KO Zoom Air insoles from Ali Express which match any Zoom Air shoes I've had.

Love the new design and vehemently agree, that most solutions to what ails you, can be found in nature or the mimicry of. As a side note, every time I see the words Horween or Chromexcel, your face flashes in my mind.
    Second, thank you [Skilled Hands] for upgrading these bad boys. Color combo makes sense (especially given where I went to school) and overall, you crank that dial up to 11 once again. Kudos. Envious of the tools every go around and looking forward to the flow becoming even more effortless.
    Lastly, did you spray the sole with water before sewing? Your machine seemed a little...hesitant.😅

    Looks awesome!
    It would be neat to see some budget logger boots (Silverado, Carolina, Georgia, Red Wing, and maybe the Gravel Gear one from Northern Tool) get rebuild with leather insoles, midsoles, leather welts, and decent outsoles (not necessarily Vibram branded). I’d like to see if any of those is realistic to buy as an entry level GYW boot, use for work, then pay to upgrade them into the next level of GYW boots. If it would cost $250 to do that, then it wouldn’t make sense even with 3 additional resoles possible from it. If it can be done for about the cost of the boot, then it could be feasible.
    Just a thought. Thanks for the great content 👍

      For the leather midsoles and filler material, I usually go to local leather supply stores. I have found that unless you order in bulk, buying leather online is generally more expensive.
      The Dr. Soles outsole they use in the videos are very cool, but they are sourced from Taiwan, and from what I have seen they only do like DHL premium shipping, so a set of $15 outsoles has a $40 shipping fee. So maybe hitting up a local cobbler to buy from their supply is a good idea. That’s how I was able to track down some vintage biltrite outsoles for a pair of redwing pecos I resoled.

    I just had this amazing idea. You know how Ford, GM and Dodge sell trucks that are not finished to companies which turn them into school buses, etc.? You should just buy unfinished uppers and finish them yourself. I will buy the first pair from you. There must be a market for that. Great videos on your channels.

    Great video as usual. Im guessing they removed the original welt to stitch the linen layer to the new one?
    BTW it's *separate, not seperate.

    It looks good, but the outsoles arent good for any use outside an urban setting. I dont really see the attraction in making moccasin type shoes without treaded outsoles.

    What is the purpose for the extra leather underneath the laces?

    These are awesome, so cool! What was the thought process behind using leather filler instead of cork?

    • @klausbecker4745

      some think its more rugged. but actually the filler plays no role in the integrity of the construction. plus a cork filler normally is more comfortable and insulating

    Do you do builds like this for the general public? I’m very interested in this.

    So if Red Wind made these changes, What do you suppose it would take the price up to? After all it is already $360 and would it be worth the price increase?

    I have two questions. Maybe I missed the explanation, and I’m sorry if I did. Why not cork? I thought cork was for comfort and provided enough space for the leather to form to your toes. My second question, again I’m sorry if I missed this, was there a steel shank in that to begin with or did you add one? I didn’t think they put them in for wedge soles. Thanks for the video!
