i actually remember trying these worlds out when i was younger because some shitty plug and play 7million in 1 games had a version of super mario bros with the level select built in. and i remember thinking it was funny levels that were too big where just textures. glad to see a pro explore some of these weird levels. good stuff

Saying something like what you said makes it sound like you haven't been around here long enough to know how he runs his channel. I don't say that to try to demean you either. I'm just saying it because I'd imagine that anyone who's followed his channel for any significant length of time would know that his focus is on legit content and not on antics or pandering.
The two-cam setup weirdly makes it seem like Kosmic has a tiny head, narrow shoulders, a long-ass massive torso, and Shrek hands. Absolute unit my dude.

18:16 For anyone wondering why the infinite jump code didn't work, it's because Mario moves automatically in S-2 (like in a pipe animation), so you can't actually control him.
25:33 Fun fact: Level "---" (40-40) is just another corrupted castle level where you appear at the top and can't move. The floor is 6 tiles high, there is a cable (where the platforms descend in castle levels) from top to bottom as the 6th tile from the right, the background is black, but there is a cloud with red shading just below where Mario spawns.

I like to imagine the underwater castle levels are the same places as the real ones, but it's far in the future and they're abandoned and completely flooded. Also, the bridge destruction animation plays only when Bowser is there. In the normal game if you defeat him with fireballs (in addition to showing it wasn't really him) touching the axe also does not destroy the bridge.
Here's a fun little fact for you guys. Versions of SMB included in most unlicensed Famiclones (including, most notably, Power Player Super Joy III) allow you to cycle through worlds like this without use of a Game Genie. The B-button world selection method is not capped at 8 like in the retail game. I used to make a game of seeing where each wacky sprite character in the world counter took me. Of course, without anti-crash cheats many of the worlds were extremely unstable 🙄

World E-1, Mario has no place to land on and die, I actually saw this on one of the cartridge called 9999 in 1. This is a hacked version where every game is kind of messed up, and in my childhood I keep wondering why Mario level has an impossible level. Now I guess I have the answer.:)
We had Taiwanese pirate cartridge with all those levels selectable from the menu. For 10 years old me this psychedelic stuff was scary and I had no idea why this existed.
18:15 - Honestly, I'm surprised S-2 was the first time you got that...but some levels start with the "enter a pipe" cutscene and send Mario moving forward endlessly. I remember this from long, long ago where I went through most of the 248 "lost levels".

In SMB Utility, there are actually 2 types of red koopa, one that walks off ledges and one that turns around. Presumably, only the turning one is used, but for some reason, stomped red paratroopas do walk off ledges.
Kosmic, looks like you need to start a new Speedrun category extension for smb1. World L, since it's almost the same as World 8, and appears to function properly. L-4 will require some fresh new strats, and time ends at the Axe!!!!

when i was a kid, i had a multi-game bootleg cart with several instances of super mario that pointed to one of these "secret" levels, 5:31 was rather dreadful to encounter as a 6 years old
Honestly if you think about this from Mario's perspective, this is probably what Hell looks like. Sometimes it's the familiar but warped. Sometimes it's just normal. Sometimes it's horrifying nonsense. Sometimes it's beautiful nonsense. But no matter what, he can't rescue Peach, even if she's right in front of him. His goal often within reach but out of grasp. And there's even the occasional escape back to the familiar through the warp zones. But eventually he finds himself back in the minus worlds again. There's no escape, only the jump button, and that cannot save him.
It's kind of insane how many of these "secret" worlds are so similar yet the one that can be accessed by normal gameplay just happens to be one of the more unique ones. Still, can you imagine the playground rumors and fan theories that would've spread if we instead could access that underwater castle with Peach at the end? Or the one with all the peaches back to back? I wonder if it would've eventually had any sort of impact on actual Mario lore...
(2:03) This is actually underwater 4-4, not 7-4. (2:53) Wow, nearly trolled by the moving platform and flying fish combo at the end there. (3:46, 3:50) LOL, you jinxed it! (4:12) And sometimes, it crashes spectacularly in an intense snowstorm! (4:44) I'm always bothered that Mario cannot successfully open or break any block while underwater (which doesn't come up normally except in 9-1 of SMB2j / The Lost Levels). He just bounces off, even from invisible blocks. (5:56) Suddenly I'm reminded of the "An SMB1 Blooper" video. (7:49) E. Gadd, indeed. (Did Luigi vacuum up the level terrain here or something?) (10:01) If you get "cutscened into another cutscene", let them keep playing out, because I think after a few times, it will eventually start a proper level. (I've seen this myself when using Game Genie codes to go to some of these "secret worlds" long ago in the past.) (10:11) LOL, nice one. And yeah, sprites like 1-ups or enemies cannot stand on moving platform sprites like that. (10:30) I believe if you're in any level besides 1-2 or 4-2's vine area, then the warp zones will always default to [blank] 5 [blank] set, with [blank] being world -1 (world 36), of course. (13:42) LOL, I saw that coming. If you're not in the actual 8-4, then the looping effect won't work, so the Piranha Plant there won't vanish, which means you can actually die to it. (14:30) You'll get the bridge breaking animation like normal if there's a live Bowser (real or fake) present. (16:02) Looks like a case of an invisible Fire Bar or just plain bad hit detection, which could be a potential threat if you see a stationary vertical Fire Bar, which could wrap around the top and bottom of the screen. (17:36) Welp, Luigi must've vacuumed the floor again. :P (17:47) One thing I learned from playing around with "moon jump" Game Genie codes in the past, is that the timer stops counting down while you're way above the screen. And if you keep ascending waaay beyond that, the game will eventually just insta-kill you, without even a death animation or music, going immediately to the screen showing your lives. (18:03) And now we play the waiting game... Aw, the waiting game sucks. Let's play Hungry Hungry Hippos! (18:15) Weird that your multi-jump code failed you there. Maybe you needed to do a buffered jump at the start for it to work? Also, perhaps you should consider using the code for swimming in the air instead, which is PIGOAP. (18:44) Ooh, this was one of my favorite "secret worlds" to play long ago. It can't be properly "completed", but there's quite a bit to go through before you reach a point where the floor disappears, and I always considered that to be the end, because falling there sends you back to the upper-left corner of the starting screen and soft-locks the game. (Unfortunately, I didn't know about the multi-jump or swim-in-air codes back then.) (20:10) Yep, here's where the floor disappears. Now, let's see what's beyond, that I was never able to see long ago... (20:33) Good thing for that off-screen trick to freeze the timer. (21:37) Whoa, getting hit makes it nighttime? That's a new one. (23:04) Aw, I hate those worlds that look like they might be interesting, but you're stuck soft-locked in the upper-left corner. (25:07) LOL! I wonder what causes mushrooms to occasionally jump out of their blocks like that?

when i was a kid, i had a multi-game bootleg cart with several instances of super mario that pointed to one of these "secret" levels, 5:31 was rather dreadful to encounter as a 6 years old

Honestly if you think about this from Mario's perspective, this is probably what Hell looks like. Sometimes it's the familiar but warped. Sometimes it's just normal. Sometimes it's horrifying nonsense. Sometimes it's beautiful nonsense. But no matter what, he can't rescue Peach, even if she's right in front of him. His goal often within reach but out of grasp. And there's even the occasional escape back to the familiar through the warp zones. But eventually he finds himself back in the minus worlds again. There's no escape, only the jump button, and that cannot save him.

It's kind of insane how many of these "secret" worlds are so similar yet the one that can be accessed by normal gameplay just happens to be one of the more unique ones. Still, can you imagine the playground rumors and fan theories that would've spread if we instead could access that underwater castle with Peach at the end? Or the one with all the peaches back to back? I wonder if it would've eventually had any sort of impact on actual Mario lore...

(10:30) I believe if you're in any level besides 1-2 or 4-2's vine area, then the warp zones will always default to [blank] 5 [blank] set, with [blank] being world -1 (world 36), of course.
(13:42) LOL, I saw that coming. If you're not in the actual 8-4, then the looping effect won't work, so the Piranha Plant there won't vanish, which means you can actually die to it.
(14:30) You'll get the bridge breaking animation like normal if there's a live Bowser (real or fake) present.
(16:02) Looks like a case of an invisible Fire Bar or just plain bad hit detection, which could be a potential threat if you see a stationary vertical Fire Bar, which could wrap around the top and bottom of the screen.

(17:47) One thing I learned from playing around with "moon jump" Game Genie codes in the past, is that the timer stops counting down while you're way above the screen. And if you keep ascending waaay beyond that, the game will eventually just insta-kill you, without even a death animation or music, going immediately to the screen showing your lives.

(18:44) Ooh, this was one of my favorite "secret worlds" to play long ago. It can't be properly "completed", but there's quite a bit to go through before you reach a point where the floor disappears, and I always considered that to be the end, because falling there sends you back to the upper-left corner of the starting screen and soft-locks the game. (Unfortunately, I didn't know about the multi-jump or swim-in-air codes back then.)
