Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Did you know the person who paved the way for the invention of Wifi was one of the most controversial actresses in Hollywood? I know. Random! Today’s episode is about the one, the only, Hedy Lamarr. It turns out, we owe Hedy A LOT. Without her advancements in film and technology, the world would be a VERY different place… She came (onscreen), she saw (war), she conquered (Hollywood). And for all that, thanks, Hedy!
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Can Bailey just get an honorary degree in history already?! I’m in her class every time the door opens.
Is there a patch? A pin? 😅
For real! I've learned more watching Bailey than I ever did in actual history class! 😂
RIIIIIIIIIIGHT?!?!? LOL, We love you Bailey. 😘
And she gives a lot more interesting topics too
Should it be Bailey University or University of Bailey? And when can we get gear to wear?
When my Grandfather was in the Army during WWII, he told us he got to dance with Hedy Lamarr. It was something he bragged about all the time. Wish I had a pic of that!
Would have been at the Hollywood canteen.
@@HollyCranfan he always made it sound like a USO kind of event but honestly, I have no idea. 😊
My stepdad also. He absolutely loved her to death !
That’s so sweet! ❤
That's amazing 👏
Let's not forget Hedy's eldest son James. She claimed she adopted him as an infant as she left husband #2 for husband #3. When James was only 11, she sent him away and never saw him again, saying she didn't want him anymore. Only after her death, in which she left him out of her will, did poor James find out he was never was adopted and was her biological son with husband #3. She kept the two other children she had with the same husband. James just recently died in his 80s in 2022. As a mother, a person doesn't get much colder than that.
Why did she get rid of him.and not the others from same husband though? Was he conceived before she left 2nd husband or something? So sad.
@@azahora22 Yes, he was conceived while she was still married to husband #2. She had him, but told everyone, including him and his siblings, that she adopted him. She "gave him back" when he was 11, and it wasn't found out until after her death, when he was in his 50s or so, when DNA then existed, that he was her biological son.
Incredibly sad. Not just a testament to how she may have been as a mother, but also to the pressure on women at the time.
I'm not going to make excuses for this. But I'm also not going to judge something like this either. Times were very different then. There could be several reasons why she claimed adoption. If she's pregnant between husband 2 and husband 3. Neither of the men would claim the child. There's no blood test DNA on Maury to prove paternity. Also husband 3, don't really know much of his real attitude, could have been mistreating and even abusive to James. Should she have just left husband 3? That's not for us to say. Is that what we would do? The majority yes. But not all. Again not making excuses for the way she was with her son. In all actuality he probably had a better childhood and life than her other children.
@@azahora22yes. This would’ve been scandalous. Some women are not cut out for motherhood. Given her interest in radio waves it makes sense. Maybe she didn’t know who the father was. Maybe she did and the third husband wasn’t willing to raise the second husbands son. Certainly he has some role in all this. But….. Again it could be lies. Actresses and other high profile women had great plots constructed around hiding their children when they’re born out of wedlock. It’s kinda hard to fathom. It’s like kids today when you tell them we had phones but they had cords and we had to learn cursive to write out papers. Tell a 20 year old how you did research in a library using phish and encyclopedias that weigh 20lbs each and you’ll see the same reaction any gen after baby boomers have when they hear how devastating it is to lose one’s virtue. Men don’t have virtue to lose btw.
Hedy was MAGNIFICENT. A brilliant, gorgeous, really authentic woman who literally changed our world. One day she’ll get the respect and recognition she deserved.❤️Thank You Bailey, you’re bringing the best stuff to us!❤️
I LOVE Hedy Lamar so much!!!!! She was SO ahead of her time, brilliant, talented, and the most beautiful star of old Hollywood. Everyone should watch Zigfield Girl!!! 😍🥰🥰😭💕
Yes! One of my favorite movies and it has so many Stars of the era...Judy, Lana, and Jimmy Stewart! ❤
HEDY was Very Cool...
She was my favorite! I think she was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
It's not possible to be ahead of one's time.
@@snowbird6855No? That's amazing! can one become *Futuristic* , then?
As an Aussie I was always told it was invented by John O'Sullivan in the csiro (australia) - which I always found amusing because our wifi is notoriously the worst. Hearing that a woman was actually the driving force both makes sense as much as it's heartbreaking. Even today, history is written by men.
Yep and it keeps coming crashing down everyday when it's proved that we've been lied to
I actually got my husband to listen to this one with me! He's a big science nerd and I always drop facts on him that I learn from these videos. Before bed he just asks me "what cool stuff did you learn about today?" 💜
Love that you did Hedy's story! I already knew her story and have read several biographies on her. She is my hero! Beauty and brains are not mutually exclusive as Hedy proved. Of course, men couldn't wait to steal her idea and try to never give her credit! Love that you got that earthquake on video!
Herstory books are badly needed. I've heard some things about famous men in history that used their wives or sister's or other women's ideas as their own, with no credit going to the real brains.
My son at age 5 was taking apart radios, televisions and computers, then putting them back together somehow making them work better in the process. He continued these things and then proceeded to teach himself 5 different computer languages! He designs things on computers and servers where literally nothing else was.
He now works for a major health insurance company doing computer stuff I can't begin to explain! No degree either! (His college professors didn't know as much as he did so he got aggravated and quit after 2 semesters)
He earns an incredible income doing exactly what he loves! (Just had to share before we got to the bad stuff lol). Luv ya chickie! 😘😊
Love a proud mama ❤
Bright Kid. May he go Very FAR... ❤
I adore that you called Bailey "chickie" 🧡
congrats!
also, chickie! bringing that back.
🐣
Hedy Lamarr was a great woman and I’m so glad more people are now learning who she was and what she contributed to wifi.
She was such a wonderful, super intelligent woman!
Someone else said she abandoned one of her children. I'd say she wasn't a great woman.
She lied to her first born son and said he was adopted, he was not, he was fathered by husband #3 during an affair with gas and #2 . At 11 she “got rid of him” and NEVER SEEN HIM AGAIN. Only after his mother died did he learn he wasn’t adopted and was her biological child. Not to mention she kept the 2 kids she had with the SAME father.
We should be called the Bailey bunch! 😂
"Jet black hair, piercing green eyes, full lips, she was gorgeous!" the description fits you perfectly as well ❤️
Bailey Sarian is so LA. Don’t change it!! ❤️
Everybody in LA cusses like a sailor?????
Loved her reaction to the earthquake. Typical Californian! Wide eyes for all of two seconds before laughing it off and goin' back to work. It's how we roll. Or shake. 😂
I need a Dark History with Bailey Sarian Netflix series... We ALL need it actually. Who else is going to teach the younger generations the hot juice dark history gossip?!?! The Queen of Dark History of course! Love you girly💟💟
BUT ... her abilities to story tell the hard stuff is gold
Netflix would censor her
@@staceysneed9928no they wouldnt. Nothing she says is super controversial. Itll probably be the same as it is here.
It’s so funny you say that, bc when I first saw the announcement for this series I could SWEAR that she was doing it for Netflix. Bailey definitely deserves it ❤
where do we start a petition,,
So, I love how creative Hedy was as a child; but what happened to her in the Hollywood scene seemed typical for the time; thank you for sharing this Bailey, much love to you!
My daughter literally dressed up as her this week for a school project. HOW COOL.
She also sued Mel Brooks because of the character in Blazing Saddles(Hedley Lamar) and there was a settlement. She was not to be messed with.
I was wondering why Bailey didn't mention Harvey Korman's character.
Nothing was out of bounds for Mel Brooks! He didn’t mean anything by bouncing off her name. Just for fun
Mel was fare too and said just pay it, she earned it. He respected her and fought in the war. One of the fastest settlements in history.
Yes. The studio was going to fight her, but Mel told them to not counter sue and pay her, he said,”She Hedy Lamarr.”
I remember that! Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite old movies
The only way I love learning history
Right?!
True! If my teachers had presented their history lessons the way Bailey does, I wouldn't be learning "new" history at 57 😅
I love how you tell your stories @Bailey - girl i am addicted. I have my Pod in one ear and phone in my draw while im at work just listening to you all day. Have learnt so much.I also love how i can Pop in a "did you know" here and there in my daily convos and make people go "What?!"
Sending love from Papua New Guinea
Not only do I love this story but I love the way she tells it!!! Ur absolutely fabulous Miss. Bailey. 😊
You’ve taught me way more and kept my attention WAY longer than any of my teachers ever.
EXACTLY! 😂❤
Bailey should make a "timeline" series where she starts far back and comes to present day. And they should use it in schools. I'd never have issues learning if she taught
No - she is top pop-smart to be taken serious; her LA-accent and LA-"wit" is quite ennerving.
Whatever happened to her Austrian family? The same as Billy Wilders'?
Bailey I came across this in an article "Louis B. Mayer changed her name to Hedy Lamarr (as a tribute to Barbara La Marr, a silent film actress)".
Bailey the genius of your videos is that even when we think the topic might be boring going in, you always find a way with your humor and little expressions to make it really interesting and fun to watch! Love you girl!! ❤🔥
"Think big anyway." - Hedy Lamarr
SO GLAD you're doing Hedy!! People need to know this.
Can we just admire that you’re at 7.24million now I still can’t get over it when I first started watching you I was so intrigued by your personality and now everyone knows you I’m happy for you
"That's Hed-Ley"
"probably sh!tting my pants and eating Play Doh" Love it! 🤣🤣
😂😂😂 I cracked up at that too hahah😅
Ikr😅😅 love Bailey ❤️
It’s great Hedy finally got a few awards and recognition for her inventions and ideas- Sad that she didn’t get the financial end of her ideas.
Thanks for sharing Bailey! Glad you covered this story on Hedy, an amazing woman ❤ Appreciate the work you put into your stories, much love 🫶🏼
Hedy Lamarr has fascinated me since I first learned about her. I absolutely loved this episode and getting to know more about her!
Paul and Joan give Bailey major "Svengoolie" and "Tales from the Crypt" vibes. As an 80s kid, I love it and feel so nostalgic watching her.
Interesting if Bailey Sarian ever were to team up with Svengoolie or Elvira for a vid.
'This is very true about the "Svengoolie vibes." Great comment.
I have an ex boyfriend who works with Elvira sometimes out in Cali. He's an amazing artist so I don't know any details. Just that it's a fact
You could be the sister of Luke from Haute Lamode! Same kind of humor, drama, and faces! Thanks UA-cam a logarithm
Hedy Lemarr also gave us Star Trek & is seen as the mother of modern sci fi. This woman was truly a force to reckon with & such an icon
I would love to know more about the star trek and Hedy
how so
how so.. ? star trek was filmed at desilu studios which was lucille ball. and desi..
This right here is why I am obsessed with this channel and Bailey. I only knew of Hedy Lamar as an actress. No clue how amazing she was ❤
My household found you about three months ago and we have learned so much! ❤From Appalachia region of Tennessee! Much love! Thank you for educating us and it being the most fun! History rocks 🎉
Wow, loved this so much! I am a woman who worked at the bleeding edge of database optimization and design leading to the ability to store and retrieve tons (my techie word of the day!) Data fast.
I also raised 3 kids, had my share of love adventures and do feel a little forgotten now I'm a senior.
I love this story of Hedy Lamarr. Thank you Bailey for all the random amazing stories. I love listening to you!
Thank you for your contributions to the world @verena_techie355 I hope you are properly appreciated in your life. Being a mother and a woman in STEM is the highest achievement 🖤
You are not forgotten! Get out there and live girl! And thank you for representing women in science!
Thank you so much. You should be recognized for your contribution. One of these days, you'll get a page in the herstory books. 😊
Thanks . 🎉
Thank you so much for making a video about Hedy Lamarr !! People need to hear her story
Bailey, you are amazing. You present these historical topics in such a compelling way. I so appreciate your comedic timing, too! You make me laugh every DH despite the tragic stories. ❤
She knew what she was doing
That's crazy i was literally just talking about her with my mom and how disney based snow white on her looks because we heard on the radio that the actual princess who inspired the tale is buried super close to our home . I love Serendipity ❤
False. Snow White is based off of Marge Champion she passed at 101 years old 💕
@@autotomie7074 Nope. Both. Hedy wasn't used for motion/acting tho.
@@urgh9822 I stand corrected apparently there are three (Adriana Caselotti) I guess Champion is just the most recognized because they’re hardly mentioned sadly 😕
Edit: also don’t go down the rabbit hole like I did Bailey didn’t really do enough research, wifi and frequency hopping aren’t really related as Wi-Fi uses spectrum technology (but it’s related to Bluetooth!). And she and her man weren’t the first or last to patent frequency hopping it does as far back as Tesla. Anyway I have my regrets 😭
Who was the real princess that inspired the story? 😊
There's a dark history to the snow white actress too
I’m a sophomore in college and I’m taking an American History class this semester. I’ve used your videos for just about every assignment I could. It made me so excited to already be familiar with the content bc of watching your awesome videos. much love❤️
watch this ep while im working on my personal project just gimme a boost of confident im so thankful for hedy and you!! x
“Dear diary, today I’m still gorgeous and I’m going to solve the war problems”💀💀🤣🤣
Thank you for bringing us the whole story of Hedy Lamarr, one of the most underrated and unappreciated people in history.
So glad you’re shedding some light on this genius and glamour!
The sea in French is le mer, la mare is the pond and la mare is fed up and la marr is just the marr
I am glad you are feeling much better and I always look forward to these videos.
Loved this one so much!
It's really sad she didn't get the recognition she deserved for basically everything she did, but she's for sure an inspiration for all women! Know your value and go for it! ❤️
Love you Bailey 😘
So, I was watching an episode of The Floor and the category was something like "Inventions". A picture if Hedy pops up and I had NO clue who she was or what she did. So, of course, I looked her up and now Bailey is about to give us the dee dive today. Cool stuff
This was such a wonderful and empowering story!! Way to go! Thank you for putting this together 💜🎉
Bailey, you are absolutely amazing, I always look forward to your uploads, you make my Friday morning fun while I'm at work, thank you for doing so much research to educate us, you were definitely born to do this!
I started crying listening to this...Her story is tragic but, it is great that she got acknowledgement for her achievements.
The fact that your real name is Bailey Sarian is perfection enough. Don’t change it! What thoughts do you have though? Lol.
Also, Hedy was a kickass and I’m soooo glad you made an episode about her… love!
Bailey's name and personality is EVERYTHING! ❤
bailey that was a beautiful and inspiring lil bit of motivation and inspiration towards the end, thank you for being you
I’ve heard of this story but you detailed it really well. Thank you so much for this!
It’s between Dark History and Puppet History. My faves.
We need these 2 things; Hedy Lamar & Madeline Kahn Barbies.
I also enjoy ‘Brief Case’ channel! Historic true crime docos! 🤓👍
Going to check out puppet history now, cheers
@@a_mind_beside_itself7823 you have to start at the beginning with The Black Plague. 🤣😂👍💯 💀
I HOPE BAILEY COULD GUEST AT PUPPET HISTORY!!!
As I go to look up Puppet History. Like I need more distractions hah. Don't know whether to thank you or curse you 😅
Bailey you did a fantastic job. I've always admired Hedy . You can see she's gorgeous but you emphasized her brains too. Love both your channels Lady .
Love this episode. Tragic, but so much great information. Glad to see you’re feeling better!
Bailey, you just keep being you. There's too much to type. Your talent, your content, your genuinity is so right on and In so glad you made all this with us. 💋✨
Amazing episode, Bailey ❤ how about an episode on Nicholas Tesla and his massively under rated inventions!
Thank you for this episode. Lamarr is one of my favorites from the golden age of Hollywood. Bob Kane's first inspiration for The Catwoman.
This was such a great story! I learn so much from you and enjoy every episode. Thanks Bailey!
Bailey, THAT was amazing ! ! Thanks so much for all your hard work.
Hedy Lamarr was headstrong, sophisticated, and intelligent for a renowned Hollywood celebrity. She's known for her grounbreaking contributions, one of which is the development of Wi-Fi. Pretty cool stuff.
Every time Paul leans forward and gasps I just lose it 😂😂😂😂 idk it’s so funny to me
Still have to catch up on the previous ep but I'm so glad I caught this one right away. I'd heard stories about Hedy LaMarr but now I got the details. Thanks so much.
you’re videos never fail to entertain me. my favorite teacher is my history teacher and i get to tell him about all of the little facts i learn from you!! (his wife also watches you and i feel connected with her spiritually now🧘🏻♀️)
When Mel Brooks was in the process of filming "Blazing Saddles", the story goes that someone raised the concern to Mel that Hedy Lamarr may be upset that Harvey Korman's character was named "Hedley Lamarr", and she may decide to file a lawsuit, to which Mel replied, "If she does, we'll just pay her."
Apparently, she did, and they did........
So glad you covered this story! Love classic Hollywood stories. Her story is so amazing! So beautiful and so brilliant with an amazing story. Please cover more classic Hollywood stories! My 2 favorite things Bailey and classic beauties. So glad your channel blew up. Been watching you since the beginning. Your dark beautiful makeup caught my attention from the beginning.
My 4 daughters and I watch/listen to dark history, they LOVE IT!. This way my kids get education & it’s not boring & it’s a well-rounded historical education! We never have dull conversations! Thank you!
I loved your voices and add onns to the story, it made it so enjoyable to watch! Such a fun, entertaining and INFORMATIVE video. Loves it 💕
Me and my oldest niece were talking and found out that we both watched and just adore you! Baily Sarian: Bringing families together! ❤😂
I learned about Hedy a few years ago and was so intrigued. I didn’t know ALOT of the stuff u mentioned but thank u so so much for ur hard work and research bc it truly doesn’t go unnoticed !!! Love ur work !! And you !! ❤ fan for years now
You have no idea how much your motivational speech at the end helped me 😭😭💕
Thanks So Much for doing this video.
I have always loved Hedy, she was Gorgeous, and Brilliant.
She was so underrated.
You are the Best Bailey!!❤
I was eating haribo sour streamers yesterday got in a rabbit hole and found out there's actually a dark history of gummy bears
I want to know 😮
Does it have to do with horses?
Dogs n cats too?
I went down that hole as well
They use promotional gelatin so there's that.. if you don't eat pork.
Your name is perfect. Please don't change it.
Thanks for this video Bailey! I work in technology and wrote about Hedy in my Masters thesis ☺️ Love this so much!
This is such an interesting history!! Thanks , it made my Friday a lot better
Also… what a beautiful eyelook!!
Respect for Hedy Lamarr! Thanks Bailey for sharing the history
I lost it at “Look at the lights Heddy.. Red.. Green.. Blue” 😂😂😂 that’s me all day everyday to my toddler
Red, yellow, blue ** sorry I’m going crazy
I'd vaguely heard of Hedy's story, but listening to Bailey tell it was of course fascinating. Thanks Bailey for another great history lesson!❤
i adore bailey SO MUCH GAAHHH she makes existing sm easier, forever grateful 4 her, honestly.
I can't hear this true story enough. It's too awesome to pass up😊. I am glad you are telling her story😊.
Thank you, Bailey. I'm sure it's pretty safe and accurate to say that we love and appreciate you. ❤🎉🍻
I always tell people things I know from your videos and you have influenced me to do research on the things I love
I got to be honest with you I wasn't sure how invested I would be in this video and you totally blew my mind by the time you ended it😊 you actually highlighted a very strong point about the intelligence of women and how they're undervalued et cetera excetera you did a great job I am actually blown away by this
Ok, the door dash, happy meal thing spoke to my soul. Literally, me.
I HATED history when I was in school, but you have truly made me fall in love with it 😭❤️❤️❤️
I get smarter every time you post a video
Thank you so much for your content Bailey!! I love learning about strong, smart women. From a strong, smart woman 🥰
Please continue making such wonderful, informative content as long as you have the means to 💖
My first time watching you. I love your selections you've shown. Hedy Lamar is one of my favorite old actress. Thanks for giving her the recognition she needed.
And for your new actress name, Latorree Hart🖤
I love this podcast and you SO MUCH Queen 🥰❤️😍
As a sister of a labor and delivery RN, I feel like you should tackle the Dark History of Nurses because I feel like you would definitely do it justice like you always do ❤
Motley Crue did a whole song about that guy. Thanks for the connection, Bailey.
I have loved Hedy Lamarr since I was a kid. Of course I didn't know everything she did at that age, but I was very surprised that so many people had no idea who she was. Well, maybe not that surprised these days...
She was awesome. Thanks for doing an episode on her!
I do the same thing that Haley does. People are like where did you learn that? The dark history podcast!! lol
My bisssssssshhhhh surprising me with this video today! Thanks Bai, love ya Paul and Shout out to you Joan the best PBand J ever ❤❤❤
