    This song is about comparing the 20's of the last century (1920) to the current 20's. Writing a song which the lyrics can perfectly apply if you're either thinking of 1920 or 2020 is genius. It shows us that, even after 100 years, no matter how the technology has advanced, the human essence stays the same. It repeats itself, it's just a cycle.

      I've heard Tobias talking about how he thinks history repeats itself in one hundred year cycles. Even in the beginning of the song, you hear those old brass instruments and in the background there is also a sound of like a modern day laser, warming up. It's very cool.

      @@GeekFurious So true. And let's face it, they've also likely never read any Shakespeare, and dismiss his work as just being for "those Ivy League dopes", rather than timeless, once you get past the language. I was lucky enough to have an English teacher way back in high school who had our class translate big chunks of "Macbeth" and "Romeo and Juliet" into modern English, then act out those parts. I've loved Old Will's writing ever since.

    It's reggaeton. Tobias saw a documentary program on Swedish tv about a Brazilian musician and fell in love with the call and response that often is in Brazilian music. He decided that one day he would try to make a song for Ghost with that style. He described the guitar in the song to be like an angry bie 😀. You missed the lyric video where you can see what Tobias thinks of facist leaders. Before the word "assassinate" he whispers "Kiss my" and the whole sentence is kiss my ass-assinate 🤣. Not many people noticed that. And yes it's Minou Forge in the choir together with Klas, Fredrik, Richard daughters and some other friends of them. Tobias, Klas and Fredrik are close friends and hangs out with their families.

    IMPERA song order/interludes makes more sense if you think about it from a vinyl perspective, which is the way Tobias goes about albums. Watcher In The Sky is the end of side A, which is why they have that long ass 80s fade out. And Dominion is the intro for side B!

  • @rodgill9376
    @rodgill9376 Рік тому +9

    Funny part is that I've described that it reminds me of Mummy Dust in a way. Lyrically speaking if that makes sense. But musically, Twenties is way more HEAVYER than Mummy Dust!
    OMG... such an amazing song. Loved the drumming in this, giving it a marching groove/jam session vibe. Also really like the amount of guitar and bass parts as well. Just wow!!!
    The choir, orchestral/swing jazz and vocal parts were an interesting icing on the cake. If this was a Disney villain song, I'd think fits Scar or maybe Hades. We need this kind of stuff more often in my opinion.

    There's a lyric video for this song, and I'd highly recommend you check it out! Apart from having the lyrics, the visuals are really damn cool.
    I think part of the reason people think this is a love/hate song is that the lyrics are pretty political - it's a flat out dis track about Donald Trump and the people who voted for him, buried in a deep layer of Tobias' brand sarcasm. There are also a lot of scary references made comparing Germany in the 1920's to America in the 2020's, and they aren't very flattering to America. Hell, Tobias is Swedish, so he probably sees a lot that Americans don't from his outside perspective.

  • @absea7918
    @absea7918 Рік тому +11

    NIce! Appreciate how open you are to various styles. Lyrically, this is a scathing comparison between the 1920's and 2020's. As part of the "Empire" theme Tobias takes on the voice of a dogmatic, anti-intellectual dictator. In the first verse he talks about having the "(3rd) Reich to come to Fruition", he later talks about how he will be "grabbing them all by the hoo-haws", which references the last US President.

    I love love growls at the beginning and the heavyness of the instruments. After few listens I got used to vocals too and now I'm obsessed with this one. The playfulness and mocking of the lyrics is just... Good shit. I especially love the " _kiss my_ (ass)asinate..."

    Twenties is almost a little experiment that Tobias wrote for the album, which is why this is the most sided song on it. a lot of people love it and a lot of people just dont see the appeal. the drums in this track use a raggaeton type beat and sounds kind of agressive. Tobias was insipired by a musician he saw on TV that was singing very agressively to a regeton beat, and thats how we got this song. Not everyones cup of tea, but i really enjoy it, glad you do too :)

    I think each one the last three songs - all kind of slow tempoed - has a LOT of supporters amongst Ghost fans. For me it’s the strongest ending of any Ghost album. Maybe ’cause I’m in my fifties and listened a lot to eighties ballads and metal over all. Darkness at the heart of my love is by far the best power ballad not made in the eighties, and Respite on the Spitalfields might be my all time favourite Ghost song.

    Others have summed up pretty much all the reasons why a portion of the fandom hates it, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. I loved it from the first time I heard it for so many reasons. I really think you should watch the lyric video for Twenties off camera, if for nothing else than to see the visualizer they used for that video (it is not the same as this one). Also, the lyrics really are a truly scathing commentary on current events. The craziest part is they released this song as a single just a day or two after the Russia/Ukraine conflict, which means obviously it was recorded well before that started. Tobias seems to have an eerie ability to predict events (Rats released less than a year before COVID struck, then Twenties and war). Can't wait until the next! 🤘

    You and your band could maybe put together some sort of rock opera that can be played just as an audio album with a story line but no dialogue which you could eventually, if you wanted to, turn into a full theater production which you can then add dialogue to or you can also still just leave it as a pure rock opera where the whole story is told through only the songs with little to no added dialogue but still being acted out and such. The prime example of a rock opera is pink Floyd's the wall. If I'm not mistaken it has been adapted into a stage musical maybe even a few different ways.. but giving you an example so you know what I'm talking about better.

    Show's how different everyone's tastes are lol. Life would be boring if we were all the same. I really don't like Twenties but love Kaisarion. The chorus of Twenties is especially what grinds on me as it feels like lazy writing.
    "In the Twenties (twenties).... In the twenties (twenties)... in the twenties (twenties)... in the twenties (twenties)...". Not overly creative to repeat the same line. Which is one thing you criticised in Pro Memoria (with the "Don't you forget about dying etc") lol. I remember looking it up when it first came out and Twenties has pretty much the entire second half of the song as "In the Twenties (twenties) *insert line*. Over 1 min 45 of it (thank god for the solo breaking it up!).
    However, if you like the metal/reggaeton feel/fusion then look up "Norwegian Reggaeton" on youtube. It's super catchy and hilarious. *Def* worth checking out!
    Griftwood is a great song and my favourite on the album. I was one of those people who cheated and listened to leaks as they appeared and it instantly stood out to me as a brilliant song. I hope they play it live when they next tour so people can join in with 1 part lol.

    @IRanOutOfPhrases Рік тому +4

    I knew you'd enjoy the intro to Twenties. What I wondered is if you would like the chorus as its a little 'hokey' haha. I think some people have also been turned off by the absurdity of the lyrics themselves (as I was initially, but I've fully come around on it.)
    Some people have pointed out how this is tying the 1920s to the 2020s, and I feel like the orchestral opening along with the heavy industrial feel to this song certainly supports that.
    As for those lyrics, they're being spoken by a rather Trump-like figure (and not in a way that praises him.) In particular to Trump though, there is a line that says, "we'll be grabbing them all by the hoo-haas." A lot of the other songs are about who "we're all gonna get rich, just trust me and do what I say. And soon those 'pennies' will make their way to you too!"
    That whole "ivy leagues" verse is another very anti-Trump thing (while speaking as 'Trump.) The idea being, "Hey, these so called intellectual elite think you're dumb, they're trying to wage war against you because they think they're better than you. So you better fight because 'not fighting a war is for suckers.'"
    Then additionally you have the whole, "I'm number 1, you're number 2, you've got a lot of god's work to do."
    More simply put, its about how figures like Trump rally up folks under ridiculous pretenses and false promises and have those people get their hands dirty instead of himself.
    Griftwood will be similarly themed, only it will be more about Pence (straight from Forge's mouth, I believe) and people like him who abuse religion for their own selfish greed. Musically, Griftwood feels like a sequel to Spillways for me, haha
