    Going to try Swiss 3F next time instead of Goex 4F. Was picking up a LOT of moisture in the pan from the Goex. Swiss burns cleaner so maybe it will make a difference. You are 100% correct about the flinching. No reason for it and it ruins shooting. Practice and discipline.

    It's surprising how little apparent difference there was between the coarsest and finest powders. My only flintlock currently is a Pedersoli Bess, and I use 2F for both the main charge and in the pan.

      Cro Minion It was a bit surprising. I have seen larger differences when the flash hole is smaller but typically I find the difference perceptible but small. I’ll use 0B or 4f for bench work but often will use powder from the horn if using 2f or finer. Thanks!

    I use 2F in my .54, 4F in the pan UNLES it's humid/moist. 4F is a faster ignition but it tends to absorb moisture. I then prime with the 2F (less absorbent). Also, depending on weather, clean out the pan and re-prime every 10-15 min if need be.

    Great video as always, too bad the mix went down at the end. I used to prime with 4F, but after getting into hunting, I switched to 3F for priming, just for the fact that it seems to be more resilient when sitting in the pan for hours on end, and I see no difference in ignition time. It has the added benefit of not needing two powders, since I also use 3F for the main charge in everything. On another note, I load my fowler the exact same way you do, so it was kind of neat to see in your video. Wad of tow both before and after the ball, and push them all down together. When I can recover my tow wads, I re-use them as tinder for fires.

    • @BlackPowderTV
      @BlackPowderTV  4 роки тому +1

      Kyle Sondergaard Thanks Kyle! I also don’t use a primer for 3f guns and use my used tow for tinder. Also, fine ground powder does not work as well in high humidity sitting in the pan for hours. Excellent point.

      I mostly do too but occasionally there is a gun that shoots 2f that just shoots so much faster with 4f or 0B, especially the short barrels that I like, that i had to give this .72 a go. I'm not entirely certain that as long as you aren't a flincher you couldn't get by with FG in the pan if it shoots it relatively fast.....

    Haven't watched full video yet, but I will. Reason for immediate response is an "FYI". The British manual of arms for the Enfield flintlock has the soldiers tearing open the paper cartridge, priming the pan, then pouring the rest of the powder in the bore, and following with the ball (still wrapped in the paper).
    The takeaway here, is that they used the same 2F in the pan that they did for the main charge.
    My understanding is that 4F is the preferred pan powder for target shooters because of a quicker ignition. But it isn't mandatory as the Enfield manual of arms shows.
    What I've found is that 4F can potentially fill the flash hole and that's bad because you get a fuse effect and hang fire. As long as the flash hole is clear, all that's needed is a good flame.

      2F?
      The FG powder (FG = Fine Grain as it was known) was screened to between 12 and 20 mesh, which equates to 1F in today's American parlance.

    Flintlocks have peaked my curiosity lately. Iv never shot, handled or even seen one in person so go easy on me with telling me how stupid this question is lol. Wouldn't priming the pan with a very small amount of modern smokeless powder result in the quickest burn? Or would it damage the pan and/or the frizzen? Once again, just curious about something I know nothing about

    • @BlackPowderTV
      @BlackPowderTV  3 роки тому

      Hey Jason, I don’t think it would damage anything but as BP acts more like an explosion than modern smokeless I would think the flash of BP would propagate faster. Also I’m not certain modern smokeless would reliably go off with the weak sparks from a flintlock. Interesting thought but as modern smokeless is so dangerous in a Traditional BP barrel we normally keep these two separated.

      @BlackPowderTV  4 роки тому +1

      Jason Charles Reichenbach, Esq. Tow has been used forever because it’s been common and cheap in the past, and excellent for wadding but you can try any number of things. Historically people have used green leaves, moss, squares of deer hide, balls of paper, etc. The only issue is is that tow and paper etc can pose a fire risk if it’s a dry summer day. Lots of traditionalists I know use green leaves. They have pretty good luck with them. Anything that will hold your ball or shot firmly against the powder even when you shake the gun upside down will work. I buy my tow bulk on eBay.

Here's why: As my pan/cover fit is not perfect (despite some serious filing, fitting, and polishing-it's not sloppy) after I had walked a loop in my woods on a windy day on my first FL outing, I opened the pan to check my prime. There was none. Since then I prime with main charge powder -and- grease/water-windproof the edges of the cover. Grease hole makes this really convenient. I've never lost my prime since.

    I've been building and shooting FL's for over 50 years. I have always used the same powder in the pan as down the barrel. Never had an issue. Pan half full, tapped away from the hole and keep your flint sharp. Bang Bang. By the way, 110gr is way too much for that musket. 85 is sufficient.

      It depends on what he wants the load to do. 85 might be sufficient for YOU and YOUR shooting and someone else might need more punch and others less.
