    Today, 24 April, 2022, Hickok45 mentioned he'd just bought a smoothbore Harper's Ferry. That reminded me that I have one, a bit of a project right now but that got me moving on getting it back in order. It needs a sear, mainspring, and butt plate. It is covered in rust but not horribly so, I've recovered worse firearms. It has an 1835 barrel date, it was made as a flintlock. The lock plate has no identification, it may be a Springfield made piece, especially as I bought it here in New Hampshire a few years ago. I bought it from a young man who just needed a few bucks, I paid $50. $200 or so should get it back on order.

    The 1842 seems to have been well liked by both sides during the Civil War. Some brigades kept the older 1842 smoothbores even when the 1861 became more popular

    I am a serious black powder enthusiast!! I've been shooting black powder since 1977. I really enjoyed this video on your Harpers Ferry rifle!! It is a great rifle with a lot of history. I shoot the 1861 Springfield, myself, but your 1842 is a fantastic rifle!!! Much larger round, for sure!! You kind of look like a big ol' bear, and I've known many men that I could call a big ol' bear, an expression of endearment, so call your range "Big Bear Range". Just a suggestion.

      @@BlackPowderTV places like IMA that sell old Brown Bess and such always seem to say that you need it checked by a smith before shooting. But I’m not going to purchase if I can’t shoot it? How do you make sure you aren’t wasting money on a wall hanger?

  • @kyle_sv_xanthus
    @kyle_sv_xanthus 4 роки тому +1

    That's an incredible range, and an awesome gun, Bob! I have an original 1863 Springfield myself, but unfortunately, it has only ever been a wall hanger. The outside of the gun is in great shape, and the lock still functions like brand new, but my best guess is that it was fired by a previous owner who didn't know how to clean black powder properly, and let the bore and nipple corrode real badly. It's a shame, but the gun is still a great piece of history.
    Don't listen to me on this one because I'm probably in the minority, but I actually enjoy seeing the loading process on camera, and never liked that most muzzleloading UA-cam channels edit out almost all the loading. I figure when I'm out shooting, I'm spending more time loading than actually shooting, so if I didn't enjoy that part of these guns, I probably wouldn't like them. Same goes for UA-cam, if I only wanted to watch shooting without loading, I'd probably be watching videos about modern guns. Just my two cents on that one.

    • @BlackPowderTV
      @BlackPowderTV  4 роки тому

      That is a shame Kyle about the Springfield. There are guys who can make a barrel for you. Bobby Hoyt is one. Send off your barrel and he'll make an exact copy or reline it to make it shootabe. Thanks for the comments about loading, I like it too. More than the shooting maybe. Thanks again!

    • @kyle_sv_xanthus
      @kyle_sv_xanthus 4 роки тому

      I'd rather just leave it as is and not mess with a piece of history, but one day, I'd like to own an original gun that's shootable as well. I have an original WIlliam Wilson flintlock pistol too, that sparks like crazy and the bore is halfway decent, but I don't trust the wood shrinkage and seperation on the stock to stand up to recoil.

    Do you need to patch the ball after pouring in the powder or do you push the whole paper tube in? If you could do a close up video of the loading sequence I would be very appropriative. I haven’t been about to find any videos of the loading sequence.
    Thank you!

    • @BlackPowderTV
      @BlackPowderTV  4 роки тому

      Maxwell Stevens Hey Maxwell, I can do a video showing the sequence. It’s going on my to-do list. If shooting paper cartridges, you just tear the top off, pour the powder down the bore and then shove the rest in and run it down. It must be a good fitting cartridge or it can get jammed up. It must be tight enough to stay put. If not using cartridges, put your powder charge down, and either a patched ball next or something over the powder to keep the powder and ball separated, then the ball, then something to hold the ball in place. Leaves, paper, tow, or shotgun cards. Hope that helps.

      I had Carpal Tunnel surgery a month and a half ago on both hands and an elbow. Long recovery time. They say three months. I say 1.5! Thanks for the comment!

    Hi. Love your videos! I am the proud owner of an 1842 Springfield which is in excellent condition. It is mostly a wall hanger in my office (looks great with the bayonet!) though I have pulled it down and shot it a couple of times. I shot with lubed patch and ball only so far though I am planning on tying up some buck and ball cartridges some day. I’ve been shooting with 70 grains of Goex 2F which seems to work great. Do you think I can bump that up to the book charge of 110 grains or should I stick with the lower charge? I know it is hard to tell without seeing the gun, but thought I’d see what your general recommendation might be. Thanks!

      It really all depends on the condition of the bore, the breech, and the drum/nipple. If it looks good and solid you could tie it down on a bench rest and use a string to pull the trigger from 20' back or so and then inspect it to see how it held up. I've done that more than once..... Best practice would be to have someone take a look at it.

    Nice video. I would always appreciate more tech. details like the actual bore diameter and the ball diameter you were using. Why not shoot what the rifled versions were issued, the elongated ball (minnie), at 730 grains? Recoil would be stout; too stout? Lots of fun, I wish I had one to shoot.

      Thanks Kerry. I’m usually a tad conservative with the original guns. I may be being overly cautious on some of my originals. This one especially is very fine barrel wise so it would likely take an original charge just fine. 👍🏻

      Jeffrey Morris A Springfield M1861 can be found on gunbroker or at a collectible firearms shop. They are for sale online at many of the civil war relic websites. I usually pick up stuff like that at civil war trade shows. Hope that helps!
