ADHD Hyperfocus Explained (..and how to use it to your ADVANTAGE)

  • Although still a controversial topic today (due to limited scientific evidence), for many of us, hyperfocus is part of every day, ADHD life.
Powerful, erratic, and somewhat mysterious, hyperfocus is a state familiar to anyone with ADHD who has ever gotten "in the zone" so totally on a project or task that the outside world has ceased to exist.
In this video you will learn that hyperfocus can have good and bad sides (such as getting hyperfocused on bad sides of your relationship), but can ultimitaly be used to your advantage by pursuing your natural interests and setting measurable goals towards them, keeping you motivated.
Ironically enough, we are then able to actually be more focused than the average person without adhd!

Your hyper focus only works when you’re interested in something. Mostly your passion. It is very real and if you use it with your passion it can make you rich.

First I think we should outline that passion is an emotion. So you want to do things that give you an emotional reaction called passion and motivation. However, the things that give you passion or motivation can also be split into things that abstractly attract your predispositions... and the mechanism that gives you motivation and passion is your perspective about how anything you are doing connects to some grand goal you have.
I have ADHD, I'm 34 now and over the years - using informed CBT based on evolutionary psychlogy, stoicism, zen meditation - I developed and expanded my perspectives about any work I do.
I now do things for the act of doing towards mastery of all things. Whether I'm working out, sorting emails, looking through spreadsheets, cooking, playing with my son. It is all a zen like flowstate of tranquility and happiness. ADHD can be made whole and fully adapted to modern society if you train yourself to enter flowstates while doing any task.
The thing is that there will be ups and downs and it takes some years but you do change your brain and you see the changes in a month, more and more. Diet is also an issue that almost everyone has that effects them at some point in there life or time of day.

hyperfocus doesn't just work with something your interested in. its just the most common time when people notice they've been under its effects. hyperfocus can engage in moments of intense emotional swings. this can be a strong passion. a heavy anxiety, or a deep looming fear. most people see the hyper focus when its over something they love. but that same person is also hyper focusing when they are in dire financial need. or when their life starts to feel like its crumbling around them. when the urge is strong enough adhd / hyperfocus engages a drive thats similar to standing up against natural law and the world to try and defy it, if there's a way. you WILL find it now.

I didn't learn about hyper-focus until I was an adult, and it explained so much. When I'm hyper-focused I'm literally unaware of what's going around me. People can speak to me, call my name... and I don't hear them. They think I'm ignoring them and won't believe otherwise, but I honestly can't hear them. I got into so much trouble with my teachers because of this when I was a child. And now as an adult, it hurts people's feelings because they think I'm intentionally ignoring them. It's so frustrating that people won't believe me. I'm not sure if this level of hyper-focus can be attributed to ADHD. I know I have ADHD, but I've recently come to suspect that I may also have Aspergers.

If you have adhd don't worry.
I sucked at school growing up and could never get engaged with learning. My teachers often made me think I'd have no future if I couldnt do better in class. But I was obsessed with my sports and excelled in them. 50percent student all though school.
Out of high-school I got into carpentry which I really had a passion for. By 21years old i built a house for myself start to finish. By 22 I started a general contracting company. At 24 I partnered in on a new business start up in oilfield trucking and rentals.
I'm now 34 and have multiple rental properties and still run 2 company's.
I finally realized my hyperfocused personality is what got me here today.
Some will call it a disability which is untrue. Learn what makes you tick and go after it full throttle. I honestly beleive it's a gift we have.

I am much better with deadlines (despite the panic) to the point on my college essay I cracked down and worked morning to night cause I wanted it to be great. 96 hours in one week, over 200 pages read for resource, 72 hours typing in 4 days. All for an essay on the psychology of Hamlet. I am definitely the type that once I get started, I’m in it until I crash and I can go hours without breaks (commonly 12+) but good luck getting me to start. That’s the hardest part that I need to work on.

I do agree. Hyper focus totally exists, i don’t know whether I have ADHD or not but I feel that when there’s something that *must* be done, or when I’m REALLY interested in something, I have 100 percent of my focus on that thing. Also, I am able to manage my time, tasks, and effectiveness so much better whilst in that state of mind purely because I have this lightning striking feeling that urges me to keep going. However, sometimes when this dies off, I do find a change in rhythm which ends up stimulating a chain of unwanted thoughts, actions and distractions. This video was great, doing small tasks first can provide a sense of dopamine which motivates us to continue our day on a positive note. I also found that external stimulus has a great impact on our minds, therefore, we should try optimising our time using the patterns that occur within us. Work on your weakness as like a strength, and utilise your strength as protection. Peace.

After a few years of just "randomly" entering this state with no explanation. I have FINALLY realized the correlation between them all; atleast for ME personally. I usually enter hyperfocus when there is a sufficient amount of external stimuli that requires swift internal thought>action. For example, I usually entered this state when I needed to handle a large amount of simple requests. I.e. Working at fast food during Lunch Rush and needing to keep track of the MANY different sandwich and burger ingredients whilst also keeping track of what completed products go in what bags to what customers from either Front or Drive Thru. Another example of entering this state was when I was bagging an overstuffed grocery cart (as an employee) and I needed to keep track of what types of items are allowed to go with each other, the order those items need to go in to fit, the weight of the bag and what spot in the customers cart would allow the most space for the rest of the future as of yet unbagged items.
basically, I go into this state when I need to make order of a chaotic mess.......problem is I get stuck in this state LONG after the rush ends, and all my friends/coworkers think I act rudely towards them when really, I just can't slow my mind back down.
To further expand on the above video, I also entered Hyperfocus in video games. Mainly in quick paced games (fighting games or action games). When an opponent makes ANY action, My mind immediately shows me all possible follow-up actions that opponent can make, and by extension, all MY possible game inputs to counter each of the aforementioned actions.........At my upper limit It was like I could see the future; however at the cost of not realizing my dog has been trying to get my attention, and thus just peed somewhere.
    P.S. I'm INTJ-T

INFP-A here and just got diagnosed to ADHD. Over these past couple of years I realized that I get into this hyper-focus state whenever I have LESS work to do or completion that is due- which means usually during holiday breaks. And since I am free most of the time, I spend time with my hobbies (like reading, doing puzzles, playing instruments, writing etc) but ONCE I feel this sudden energy, I STOP myself, and use it to study for something school related.
Like currently I have to study for the SAT for high school, and I struggle with it so so much. That’s why holiday breaks are so crucial for me to use this fixation on something I need to do TRICKING my brain as if I WANT to do this assignment.
I don’t know if it makes sense lol. But I started to realize I can actually use this ability as a superpower- making me accomplish anything I need to finish. This doesn’t work all the time too (rarely if I have to be honest), so trying to explore new ways to use ADHD to my benefit.
P.S I currently am not getting any professional help nor meds but hopefully I will soon :)

Im studying for a public job and taking the whole subject is hella boring, but I recently discovered that doing real exams and then doing research of the questions I don't know is a way of hyperfocusing on the study.

Very well edited video my guy!
I was diagnosed with ADHD in second grade and took medication till the beginning of an apprenticeship and totally failed every task that came with it & left in 5 months. Today I start to get interested in more and more stuff that I acutally enjoy & notice this hyperfocus for the first time in my life. I knew that flow state existed because of my gaming carrier, but what I have heard it's only there for a shorter amount of time. I can hyperfocus on stuff that I like for hours in & suddenly realize that I am starving or forgot something in the oven. It's very interesting to say the least.

Hey good video, just thought I'd mention that in some of the voice over clips, like say at 3:59, you sometimes peak with your plosives (the "p" and "b" sounds) making the audio cut out. It's not a huge deal and it's super easy to deal with, a pop filter helps but it's just easier to position the mic a little off to the side of the direction you're speaking in

Well that explains why music teaching hooked on me when i was 13 and in school. i could barely focus on school work, but I'm currently going into my final year of my teaching degree and when i was doing classroom assistant and helping out, i could nail helping the other students and teaching small bits, and now im almost finished my degree for being a full time music teacher its almost like a light has switched. the same space but in two different places with the parallel effects!
Teaching music allows me to walk around the classroom a lot, be very interactive with the students, and it helps to get out a lot of my energy. I got diagnosed with it just before the summer and im 23, and my psychologist said it is a great job for someone with ADHD!

Hyper focus is also a gift, as no ordinary person at all can do it. It gives you advantage over most people. ADHD is not all about hypo focus, that's false, hyper focus is the only one blessing from it, because with it, you can complete what no normal person can, it is a gift if you managed to direct it and control it. From my opinion, if we managed to control this hyperfocus ability, and direct it well, ADHD won't be a problem anymore. Lets stop looking negatively towards it, an old saying goes "if you can't move the mountain, rotate around it." Some physicians and psychiatrist say that ADHD is not curable, well, we are gonna make use of the best of it, and it gives the advantage of hyper focus, what no normal person can experience, just learn to direct and control it and you'll be better than any normal person, we know all about adhd but all what's being said there is hindering focus while dumbly forgetting the fact about hyper focus presence, we can harness that rather than complaining about hypo focus. So either that or going with treatment programs or therapies or consider using medicines to become normal and reduce adhd to a very low percentage, because living with ADHD normally without treatment from it will just lead to a life of suffering.

i've come to this video after i made the realization and the decision that i want to become a ufc champion since i always loved to fight smart and the ring gave me such amazing stimulation and excitement.. i always saw clear signs of adhd but i refused to consider myself part of any "mental disorder" category. but the moment i decided i will chase my dream i literally could not sleep or think about anything else the whole day, if i wasnt training or sleeping i would be sitting twitching my leg constantly watching fights and trying to learn then stand up out of nowhere and try to mimick what i learned imagining i was in the ring, then i would spar and peopr always made the observation that i was very "alert" and they could hardly touch me.. it brings me such joy to know that my condition does not stand in the way of my dream but really gives me a unique way to achieve it, i wont fail you my fellow ADHD community and i will be 1 more example that you can achieve anything in life if you really go all in and not get discouraged

Hyperfocus is a two edged sword. The problem sometimes, like mine, socially acknowledged achievements creates a sense of security, thinking youll always be like this, and people put you in a pedestal and pressure can build up. When the negative side of it kicks in, it hits you by surprise and coping can take a lot of time and effort compared to a scenario where a person who’s been self aware of his disorder early on. I got my achievements not from a sense of pride, but of extreme interest… this crates false promises for my parents , trachers, friends and employers… now, im a bum doing my very best to overcome the hurdles hyperfocus can bring. But i want to acknowledge that though difficult, i should treat it as an important part and lesson in my life so that i can truly live in a fulfilling way

I can’t focus enough to read about each topic that interest me, causing me to quit 5 mins after I start! Then a new inspirational idea or task happens. The cycle repeats until I wake up the next day. I don’t progress for tomorrow because I get overwhelmed and frozen like a deer in headlights. I would like to gain control over it but can’t think about anything for more then 3 minutes without getting distracted 😩

Every cell in my body wants to resist to even think of doing such a task, so in my mind I think "I did it last time in 8 minutes, can I do it in 7.5 minutes today?"
It still isn't easy like a task I'm interested in, but I can actually do it now.

I can use it both to draw for hours on end without any rest inbetween and manage to work on vital homework, once I had a Spanish homework and I had to answer an insane amount of questions on a total of more than 30 pages, I never cared about it most of the time but one day I just decided to get it over with and finished it in 7 hours straight.

This time I took a lower paid job but within a field of high interest. After a few months I really thrived but was almost crippled by migraines and back aches. Nonetheless, everything I wanted was to work more, so I never called in sick. It was only after a YEAR I realized I actually hyperfocus and then my health crashes. Me wanting only to work more is not a solution, it is a symptom if my brain loving the hyperfocus. And then my health suffers.

I get everything else that's important for the day done, before I allow myself to touch a controller or keyboard. Honestly, a huge part of why I do this is because I could never get anything done if I allowed myself to play video games before completing my other day's task. I literally can forget to eat or use the restroom when I hyperfocus on a video game, so I have to control when I allow that to happen. The other thing I can severely hyperfocus on is creating a piece of art.

Over self diagnosis of depression and anxiety is the norm. It’s like a cool tag. You can feel down but not be depressed. You can feel anxious, but not suffer with anxiety. You can be fidgety and ‘hyperactive’ and not have adhd.
