That floating slum has so much potential if the government invests in it. It really could be a wonder.
If the government invests in cleaning it out and developing it, the cost of living would increase and the old residents won’t be able to afford it

That plan has already been done a prototype for the new green water houses was built by the UN but it will require gradual implementation but the question is are our leaders and are we the Nigerians ready to love ourselves do what is right aswell as the needful until we stop submerging ourselves Makoko isn’t changing anytime soon

I viewed Makoko from the bridge when I visited Lagos. I thought it was fascinating that an entire community could exist on water. Being careful not to take my American mindset and applying it to what I witnessed, help me to see the strength and tenacity of the people. Awesome video. Thank you for taking me inside Makoko.

When I visited legos in 2010, I visited this areas, I could not hold my emotions to see the other side of life that reminds you to b grateful for what you have.

Indeed very pwerful documentary. As proud a nigerian that i am, just imagine the volume of economic impact it could make in lagos state given the right infrasructure with adequate sanitary system. Happiness has no price. Just seeing the smile on these kids in spite of their circumstances is gut wrenching. Great work Tayo, keep it coming. It is my hope n prayer that some kind of a government implementation via infrastruture will be big boost and a tremedous upgrade to lives of makoko people and the economic impact to the state.
💐”Venice” is famous for its floating city, it brings in millions of pounds and tourists. If the government helped the people invest in the area. The people living there could become very rich and have much better living conditions. 💐

Thanks you Tayo Aina, clearly you read your subscribers comments. I requested this exposé of Makoko, based on a photograph I saw of the area. Full disclosure, i'm not Nigerian but from the Caribbean (one world, one love). I understand how difficult this must have been for you to personally experience this level of squalor. I believe this type of exposé can have a beneficial impact on the future of the people who live there. This is for them. This video needs to be on the T.V. with a follow-up of pictures in the newspapers. We have to shame our politicians to action, assuming they know shame.
There was a documentary of this place on CNN awhile ago.

This reminds me of Bangkok Thailand, if things can be cleanded up, and certain things can be brought into the community, such as restrooms, a centralized floating market, even a live seafood market, lodging, cleaner air, with bigger spaces for food/snacks, and even the water ways cleaned up, even floating parks, and a way for the inhabitants to make a better living wage, it could draw so much tourism, and be a plus for Nigeria as a whole. Just saying. But there is much work to be done in Nigeria, so much potential! Could you imagine the possibilities!

And there are resources, but the government is corrupt, theres plenty of money moving through it's just that the economy and Government need a major overhaul, but the foundation, the idea is there. I have seen slums, i have visited some of them and I recently visited Kibera Slum in Nairobi which a lot of people say is the second biggest in Africa after Soweto. i can conclude that the people in Kibera are living a life that is 50 times better than this. There is a video i did there coming up on my channel soon. I never thought people could live this way. I guess the people of Makoko will still wake up and vote a leader who will promise to improve their lives.
Comparing won't solve anything. I'm sure whatever index used, may have suggested Kibera as the second largest. The people of Makoko are happy and declined change. Why? Already, its been redesigned and a master plan for green environment powered with renewable energy waiting for implementation by the government. The government tried a few times to kick start the project. But, the people protested refusing any government support. I don't blame the people, they've been burned before and lost a very large part of their lands and homes to private investors (criminals) protected by the same government who promised better living. Watch the video again, you will see tree loggers, these people have become powerful and they weren't included in the master plan, meaning they would have to move elsewhere.
@@africantruly8857 wow.. I thought it was a case of the government giving a blind eye. Actually there have been cases where the government gets better housing for slum dwellers but end up renting them and move to the slum again
@@AFRICANTIGRESS You completely right. Also, many governors of that state, have tried to improve living conditions and redesigned the slum but, implementation has been the biggest problem. The people don't want any change due to affordability and trust. The tree loggers have become too powerful and refuse to move their businesses elsewhere.
Having been to Lagos myself for all the poverty they have ,the people are great always smiling laughing and happy friendly. I loved it there this brought back memories x

Watching this made me so emotional! There is such a high spirit there! I appreciate that soooo much! My God bless the people of Makoko! I wouldn't want to change anything if the people want to keep it the same, but I honestly don't think it would take more than $5M to renovate the area. Give the area some structure, make it look uniformed. Make a water system/sewage, a trash system, and a little more solid housing that wouldn't cost the people much of anything (granted if they are paying something). And the school. ❤️❤️ Okay, maybe $10M

I've been here as a child and it's very very similar to the slums of ajegunle water side called jmj. One thing for sure is you can find the most liveliest and kind hearted people here...its the part of Lagos that we see but dont want to see 😩😩

Very insightful and I enjoyed the content. Reminds me of my Boat ride in India. We need to realise and accept that some people prefer to live on water and enjoy it. Forget about the squalor. I think you right. The government tried a few times to have it rebuilt, cleaned and planned. But, the people protested refusing any government support. I don't blame the people, they've been burned before and lost a very large part of their lands and homes to private investors (criminals) protected by the same government who promised better living.

I’m Cameroonian and i have been watching a lot of your videos and this one just left me in tears for a minute I had to pause the video and just say a little thank you prayer i look at how hard it could be for this people to live and yet they survive and I realize I have little or nothing to complain about
A good number of folks living in this makoko actually migrated from benin republic...forming a tribe known as "egun"..if I'm not mistaking...
I do know the Makoko people speak Egun but I don't know if they are from Benin Republic.
Wow this is wonderful. Hopefully now a more indepth video will be made of these people heritage and connections back to Benin and how they united to form Egun.
One part of me is sad to see my brothers and sisters living like this. However, another part of me is impressed with how they make it work and can still smile. This video gave me mixed feelings as I enjoyed the stabilized shots of you moving through the corridors, I was amused by how much people go through to earn a living through a floating market plus the effort the school made to put a playground for the children over water but I know that it's from such humble beginnings that we are built & molded to be greater people when we realize our potential.

I'm so fascinated by how they built those houses in water, the technical work is magnificent.
The resilience of those people remarkable .They have created an city out of most meager means ,with economic opportunity and schools. I wonder if there is a hospital and a police station .I would like for them to clean up thier community, maybe add a sanitation department. The people look confertable with thier surrounding, but can you imagine the kind of city this would be with the rite resources. Perhaps I see it differently but despite the good quality of production and content, I think that the quality of life of these people are not what most of us would want for ourselves if we are being honest.
It looks “cool” when we watch from our devices in our more comfortable places and say that they are “happy” ;which is possible BUT educating them on how happier they might be if a genuine entity can work with them on reconstructing that place; health, hygiene, organized commerce, infrastructure etc all in place.
There are other places in the world with such setting but more presentable, maybe if our government had the fore sight, turning this place into a lovely place to behold for its inhabitants, us and foreigners might just not be a terrible idea, considering it’s benefits like tourist attractions, better living condition for its inhabitants etc. Just saying.

Anichebe Amobi this is true but then with that will come unaffordable rents and the displacement of families (something similar to gentrification) if not a straight out saturation of people that feel this is the new “in thing”. How much more beneficial it would be to mobilize the wood workers and other brilliant souls in the community to rebuild themselves... from the inside out.

Perhaps some subsidies, tax cuts or even good employment project could be offered to these people, meanwhile if the area is rebuilt in an attractive manner that attracts tourist, it could help with the maintenance of the area. One thing is certain, the present condition of this place is not good regardless of how the inhabitants feel about it; comfortable or not.
