Andy,
Thank you for taking the time to put this immense collection of videos together. As a boat-owner who does not have an open checkbook for all things, especially cosmetic you have been a great resource and I look forward to learning more. Take care, Brian
+bushido325 Thanks Brian! Happy to help :-)
I found your videos after starting a repair job on my boat. Had to re-core a swim platform door, and my wife wanted to help but didn't fully understand chisels dig and poked a hole through the other side, right in the middle of the non-skid. I've watched your color matching and this video multiple times and I wish I started watching them before starting the project. But I made my reverse mold, and did my patch. I showed people over the weekend and they couldn't find it until I pointed it out. Thank you so much for the knowledge share and keep doing what you're doing because it's great!
Andy I am getting ready to do the non-skid on my 23
Anna Capri project. The boat is getting the power put on right now, but I will do the inside soon as it gets back here in Florida. The project has been a year long project, with a lot of sanding and Awlgrip. A full stern and a new outboard bracket was also done. Your You-tube channel has been with me all the way. Many Thannks Capt. Mitch Chagnon
To get a lower height on replacement non-skid sections I'm going to experiment with Rutan bi-directional aircraft cloth instead of mat (chop strand). It's a bit delicate to work with so as to keep it from distorting while laying it out but once in place it absorbs resin very well and gives a strong thin uniform layer. It's also excellent for compound curves. I'll post my results when I'm finished testing.
Really like watching your videos. Starting watching them after i bought my boat 🤪
Can sit for an hour sometimes more. Only downside looks so simple when you do it 😂
Keep them comming 👍🏼
Also many thanks for the tool and material suggestions on the show. I have been a customer of Jamestown distributors for many years gong way back when they were actually in Jamestown. I live in Narragansett during the Summer now Florida in the Winter. Lots of time for projects. Capt. Mitch Chagnon
Been re watching all the old videos again 👌 always helpful information may have forgotten that comes in handy.
Awesome video, as always. This is a very great way to duplicate factory non-skid, the first realistic option that i have come across so far. One question though... Would it have been better to have added a layer of chop or 1708 on top of the smooth edge only to help raise it up to a more flush level with the new non-skid patch? It seems like that ledge is a slight bit excessive since you had to use a layer of glass to make the non-skid patch manageable. Thanks in advance and I love all your videos! Keep em comin!
Have you ever reproduced C&C Yacht's gelcoat no-slip texture? Is it a product, process or both? Regardless of you reply, I respect your mad skills and the wealth of knowledge you've accumulated. Thank you for taking valuable time out of your day in putting together these highly instructive videos.
Looks fantastic I'm sure you could even go to 150g chop to lower hight of non slip section
Could you illustrate this process with Rtv prosil rubber with the mold straight on the deck section?
Would love to see a video on making a gutter system for a custom hatch. Capt. Mitch
Andy I really enjoy your videos! You should be a teacher in a trade school I'd sign up and take your classes! Great Work!
what would the process be to do the entire deck with original non skid pattern? would you use Gibco flexmold and do it section by section, wait for it to dry and then lock the mold in place and roll it out again, there aren't any videos that I can find on you tube showing out to do entire boat with original non skid pattern.
I always tried to collect and view any technique before attempting myself. Yours seemingly are easy to follow and good visuals. Do you have any that repairs recorded for hairline and larger cracks in non skid cockpit damage? I have many repairs needed in my 1969 Ericson 32. Mine has damage in all four corners on flat and curve areas. I could send a picture(s). Thanks. Steve
A True Craftsman!
Thank you so much guys! You are great!!
Can you tell me what gelcoat you used here?
Have you ever tried to spray gel coat with a Wagner spray gun ? I have used a Wagner for spraying lacquer, stain, and polyurethane you could use different size heads for spring, so I was wondering if it was possible to spray gelcoat
Been enjoying your vids, thx for posting them.
Given all the extra time involved, I don't see the advantage of laying up a patch and gluing it on just to replace the nonskid.
Why didn't you just roll some gel onto the hatch and set the pattern mold into it ?
How should you handle a real large area like a floor? Would you make several panels and then bond them together?
Love the video's! fantastic work! simple and easy to follow! don't stop! OH and love the Music!
Awesome! Thank you :-)
It's "P.B.A" a Wax solution? You mention it on minute n.8 Of the Vi.
Besides the question let me mention your videos are awesom!!! You explain every little detail.
PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) is basically a liquid plastic after the solvents evaporate :-)
BoatworksToday Thanks for the answer. 😊
Andy. I am learning a lot from your videos, Thank you for making them. have you ever done a hatch repair where it needs to be recored, plus, new nonskid due to the gelcoat cracked? What steps would you do for the repair?
+ozzie 0314 I'd do the core replacement first, then the nonskid :-)
Thanks
Andy, Maybe i missed it but when you mixed up the cabosil and laminating resin did you add any wax or something so it will cure? Or when you put the fiberglass non-skid square over and weighted it did that cut off the air to cure it>?
thanks in advance Jay
Andy, could you show how to apply this non skid technique to a new part? Like if I want to build a new fish box hatch cover from a mold. Thanks
What kind of saw do you use to cut the panels without splintering the gelcoat layer?
Great info and easy to follow. I have a project with some variation from the video, filling a Catalina 320 deck forward of the main traveler where the Solar panel was removed. I've done a few small matching repairs But this will require a 16 X 27 patch. Originally I wanted it to blend in with the surrounding non skid but it seems I will need to have flat boarder on it. Is there a solution to blending the patch in with the surrounding deck pattern? Or Am I just looking for days of unnecessary toil?
Where did you learn how to do all of this?? I have a 90 Grady white that i would like to do the floor over and transom. When you put a new floor down how do you glass under the floor?
Andy I made the mold--cast a replacement 7X7 inch square piece to fit in where one of those solar (lol) powered vent fans was on my hatch--fits perfect--One question before I do the last step. Can I use a white pigment in the laminating resin to help conceil the edges?
Hi Andy, great video. I have to do lot of those repairs on my old boat. Once I have sticked the non skid patch on the part can i proceed with paint, or primer and paint instead of gelcoat? And if so, can i apply primer and paint also on the patch or only alongside?
Maybe a silly questione, but if it is possible will save me a lot of troubles when doing large sections of the boat that obviuosly i can't take away to work on. Thank you, and make MORE videos!
As usual, great video.
Excellent,,, as usual.
Thanks Andy!
+myvidlocker Thank you!
andy...love your videos....
question...getting ready to use the soft sand non skid on a hatch on my boat before I do the whole boat..... If I use enough hardneing catalyst per gel coat...do i have to use pva when i am rolling out a large amount to non skid? Plus if it a two coat process , how can the thin line tape cut through the gel coat after it hardens?////or do I pull the finish tape prior to complete hardening?
Thanks
Bob K
My first attempt at this seems to have failed because gel coat layer was very thin in some areas and I'm reluctant to waist the polyester to finish the part. My part looks to more be twice the size of this. So before I go out and get another quart of gel coat, I need to refine the process a bit. Are you laying up the poly while the gel is still wet? For the larger area can I brush on multiple thin coats letting them tack between coats?
This is great thx for sharing. Is there a method to fix a crack or two, about 2-6 inches long in gelcoat on a section of nonskkid? For instance, create a mold using some putty over the crack, opening the crack a bit to ensure the gel goes into the surface, applying gelcoat, put pva overtop of the gel, then using the mold from step one, put it on-top of the gelcoat with a weight?

Just what I needed, can you give me details on the air gun you are using?
What are you using for a spray gun and which tip?
Hey there. If you were going to use this technique on deck or cabin top that is 3ft x 1 ft , how would you then attach it to the rest of the cabin?
Why do you apply “a light coat of pva” before sanding?
Andy, I have some gel coat work to do. What’s the best way to match the color of my hull?

@@boatworkstoday thank you.
Hello, whats that nonskid pattern ? Is something specific to buy or is a normal board to buy on any wood store ? Thanks.

Thanks, sorry for not listening properly... im going to make good textures for my boat now ;)
what brand of wax to recommend for gelcoat outside hull?
+BigWater59 No specific brand; just a good carnuba paste wax for Spring, and maintain with a regular liquid wax such as Meguiars.. Hope this helps!
Hi Andy.... 8min in to Your video You put on PVA before sanding... Why??
Hi Andy, my name is Eric from Miami, I watched all your videos. Help me a lot in my first boat, with fiber glass and paint, thanks.I have one question ...I ready painted the hull and now I must paint the console and boat deck, I will use awlgrip. My question is in the boat deck do I must to use preimer before the paint?( the boat was painted with gealcoat before. Thank you.
+eric rios It's a really good idea to prime before painting (you'll get better adhesion and color from the paint).
+BoatworksToday Thanks for the fast answer
+BoatworksToday Hi, I have another question...In my boat I would like to put some parts Nonskid with this paint awlgrip.....Can I do it with sand ? and if can do it with sand, how can I do it ? Thanks.
CAN I VARNISHISH OVER TEAK OIL?
Andy what is the ratio of hardner too gel coat?
+theislandpackrat Generally you catalyze poly resin at 1%-2%.. There are charts available online but if I remember correctly 8oz of resin needs 2.5cc Mek-P for 1%.. Generally speaking it's 10-12 drops per ounce of poly resin :-)
+BoatworksToday not sure why there are lines across what I typed, but unfortunately I am not able to fix it.. Thanks UA-cam :-/
Thank you Andy.
To bad you didn't do this on a real boat where nothing is flat ... I'm thinking epoxy bar coat for the mold as it remains flexiable and would match different contours...
Can I use paraffin gelcoat to create the mold?
Andy I'm a big fan and I am seeking advise but I don't know how to pm. And it doesn't pertain to your video here so I'd feel down right self is to ask here.....
