Agreeded! I’m super happy with my Fx9’s. I have two of them and i love the fact that my two fx9’s with accessories is still a few grand cheaper than 1 Burano with no accessories. Both cameras are so close in performance and image quality i feel no need to chase a Burano. Even though i respect what it is and i do (even on UA-cam) see the slightly more cinematic image quality. Not much more Sony can do if they release a fx9 mk ii so I’m hoping to get another few years out of my fx9’s. For the shows I do Reality and live shows it’s all we need for the foreseeable future.
I completely agree with your point on auto focus. Shooting with autofocus makes me nervous because I don't know when its gonna fail on me. It does not really matter how accurate or fast it is, when it ruins your shot its on you. For me a camera that can't be confidently operated manually is not really a professional camera. And people these days get way to reliant on tech. I once hired a guy for a sports match just to cover a crowd, he came with gimbal and A7SIII and nearly all his shots were unusable due to autofocus constantly refocusing, jumping from face to face.
Just sold my FX9 as I am going to C400. My main issues with the FX9 is that I must crop in on the sensor to get slowmo, and once I do that I lose the amazing autofocus. With that said the camera loses its main point by being full frame for me. And every time you switch between different crop modes the camera forgets what FPS you had set in S&Q mode. That’s just so bad. All this while they release FX6 barely a year after the FX9 where they actually fixed most of the issues that plagues the FX9. Did Sony at least release an update for us FX9 users? Nope, they just ignored us. I reached out to several places to see how much I could get for my FX9 if I traded it in for a C400, and 3 out of 5 places didn’t want it at all. They said that FX9 sales have dropped to almost zero. I had my FS7 for 8 years, loved it. FX9 made me walk away from Sony to Canon. The C400 does almost everything the Burano does for 1/4 of the price.
I really hope that works out for you, especially since you couldn't wait a few more months for their updated fx9ii which is all but guarenteed. And you left one set of issues to acquire a crap ton of new ones from Canon (they still haven't even started releasing that c400 so here's to hoping you're either renting/ you own other cameras until it comes out.) also they just did the C80 so like is your investment still that secure? Canon literally just got to the party with cameras that a great today and that really is all they needed to do, but I don't expect them to push anything past their current mean.s
@@yusei151 I was done with Sony as soon as they released the FX6 and screwed us FX9 owners by not updating our camera at all. they fixed all the major issues we had with a much cheaper camera and just ignored us. Also, if I would have waited for the FX9 II my FX9 would have lost even more value. I barely got it sold for any money at all as no one was interested in buying it saying that the FX6 killed off all interest for my FX9. I’ve already had a chance using the C400 for a week and it was really good. Was it perfect? Absolutely not, but it came damn close to being perfect for what I need all that for almost a quarter of the price of a Burano. I’ve been loyal to Sony for over 12 years, but enough is enough when it comes to screwing us customers over. Regarding the C80 it looks good, but it’s not my cup of tea, the form factor doesn’t fit what I do. Also the C400 is way much more future proof with all the connections I need and the form factor I can work with. There is no right or wrong when buying a camera , as long as it works for you and makes you money. FX9 Made me a lot of money, but it frustrated me on almost every shoot because of its limitations. Lastly, Canon did the right thing announcing the C80 now and not after releasing the C400 and upsetting people that perhaps would have been better off with me C80. Sony chose to release the FX9 with all the limitations it had, and then they fixed it with a much cheaper camera leaving us FX9 users in the dust. That’s just not fair.
@@sa.t.2507 Same thing happened with my Sony A1. They pretty much abandoned it and threw all the new firmware features into their cheaper cameras. I sold my A1 after waiting for an update and getting nothing. Sony just doesn't really seem to support their flagship models the same way they do their entry level/prosumer cams.
Great video, My experience is different. At super 35, both of these cameras are very similar, but the xocn is amazing in post from the burano. I also started using 8k for socials so we end up with a close and wide shot at the same time, and of course the Ibis for wildlife. The Ibis on the burano is amazing, I am yet to experience anything remotely close to that on a PL or cine glass, and it gets even smoother sony master lenses. I've been using 6k 50fps for wildlife in xocn, so much data but the grades on the final product is just mind blowing.
One of my clients is a horse trainer. I can never trust auto focus with fast-moving animal. It sucks that that lovely shot of the eagle grabbing the fish out of the water is out of focus. That's always heartbreaking.
Interesting comparison Zach, thanks. What do you think about the new Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K? It looks great for wildlife cinematography: you can shoot in 4K, 8K or 12K using the entire FF sensor without cropping, retaining the full field of view of your lenses. And the Super 35 mode is 9K! In terms of high frame rates, you can shoot 100 fps in 12K, 17:9 or 120 fps in 12K, 2.4:1 widescreen. For higher frame rates, you can shoot 144 fps at 8192 x 5360, 180 fps at 8192 x 3408 and even capture 8K 2.4:1 widescreen at an incredible 224 fps at 8,192 x 3,408. Sensor read-out speed is like 6 ms (Burano is 18 ms). And it is $10K US less than the Burano at $15K US (including 8TB of internal media) . Since you prefer manual focus the lack of AF shouldn't be a deal breaker for you. And the B-raw workflow with Davinci is more straightforward than dealing with XOCN.
Here's my 2 cents about those cameras since you asked.. I am not a fan of Blackmagic cameras because I've heard horror stories about Blackmagic. A lot of times, we do assignments in remote places and having reliable cameras, sensors, batteries, and media is essential. I've brought Sonys all around the world in humid-hot blazing condition to freezing temps in the Arctic and the Sonys just perform amazing. I have little to no hick ups using them so I just keep using them. If it ain't broken why fix it? The bigger resolution sizes for the Blackmagic seem awesome but also are going to bog down your computer as well so there's trade offs.. Additionally the Blackmagic data is just gigantic compared to Sony. Sony has really done an amazing job with data compression with the codecs and file size. There's a reason why Sony is still one of the best camera manufactures.. I used to use Canon but made the switch to Sony about 7 years ago with the drop of the Sony FS7.
@@zachhellmuth Zach, here you have a sample of the images you can get with the new Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K. The shooter was recording Full Frame 12K at 90fps and 8K (downsampled from 12K) at 120fps. Interestingly for you, he was shooting super35 crop mode at 9K 120fps with the Canon Cine Servo 25-250 zoom lens (for the wide shot he used a Laowa 12mm lens). Everything was shoulder mount (no tripod) and doing manual focus. If proving reliable and beside cinema applications, I think this camera could be very good for wildlife filmmaking (and sports). ua-cam.com/video/lyFIS-ajxw0/v-deo.html
did you try touch focus tracking with the eagles , sort of a pain as you would have to tap the EVF once , but wonder if it would hold better that the normal AF mode . Or does Burano have bird / animal eye setting ?
The eagles were flying too fast to try and touch focus tracking. My understanding is that the Burano does not have bird / animal auto focus eye settings.
Good question - not sure but I can speculate. The FX9ii would probably have more ENG characteristics than the more cinematic Burano. Maybe more seamless ND filters and more enhanced lens servo capabilities. Thanks for watching!
