I own 2 Burano's and Robert is right, it's weird. It makes a beautiful image, especially 8K Raw where it really shines. The button layout is great, I like the vari-ND, IBIS and AF options. The SDI outputs and overlays are ridiculous for a camera in 2024. I think the rolling shutter is mostly a non-issue for me, I don't whip pan the camera in my work. If only SONY had a consultant with on-set experience to guide them with the design... it could have been so much better.

Great review, thanks for your honesty and not getting caught up in Sony's reality distortion field and defending all the problems with Burano like some others have. Bummer about the issues with Burano. You can't return the camera even if you wanted to, as the camera is non-returnable in nearly every store I checked. I wanted to love the Burano, and had a pre-order when announced, but when I saw the first batch of footage I cancelled my order. To my eyes the camera is very close to the FX6, and nobody has ever requested 8K footage. It's complete bullis**t that the camera has bad rolling shutter, neutered output options, and awful IR pollution. I've put up with these problems with so many cameras in the past, that I can't imagine dealing with them on a $25K camera. The FX6 continues to be the best value for a "professional looking" camera from Sony.
in the UK you can return anything that does not meet the sellers description if it is not 'fit for purpose' the contract is between you and the seller.. just most shops try and fob you off.
Me, sitting here in 2024 still shooting 1080 for 99% of the things, and just stoked to have 10 bit and the VND on my FX6, while also totally wanting a camcorder again. Hoping we see the announcement of a direct Sony competitor to the XF605 at NAB!
Really nice to see someone who acknowledges the Burano’s strengths yet isn’t reviewing it like some starry-eyed fanboy. The IR pollution issue to me seems to be a critical flaw, even if it can be filtered with hot mirrors. Part of the beauty of this camera system is the one man owner operator/small crew, who requires superior image quality above and beyond the FX series cameras. But keep in mind, Sony almost always releases a major firmware update after the camera begins selling, so the camera doesn’t really become “as advertised” until about a year later.😂 (Owner of an FS7 and FX6 here 👋)
@@boxoffisaWho said anything about music videos... I was talking about Sony's history with firmware updates. That said, the FS7 is still a perfectly usable camera for a lot of corporate/broadcast projects. It's more about skills of the operator rather than "magic gear." But honestly, it's very rare that I break out the FS7 these days with an FX6 in-house.

They should have just taken the F55 body style, dropped a Venice I sensor in it, painted it gun metal grey, then youd have a winner. This is an A1 in a trenchcoat with XOCN LT.
Absolutely - the F5 and F55 were a giant leap, in form factor and usability (I love the body and button layout). I'm still shooting on mine. It's worth noting that the F5 had multiple improvement firmware updates that increased frame rate and recording resolution - I hope Sony will do the same for the Burnao.
Allowing IR in helps keep “sensitivity”. Manufacturers ride that line. Ideally they’d want no IR blocking so their sensors would perform much better in lower light but they know reality and they’d be called to the mat over it. It would be nice if they all just blocked it and let us remove it when we want. But, these new mirrorless mounts/spacing just don’t allow it much. Anyway, great review dude… Really liked it. Burano is a great camera with some limitations. Man, if it was priced at $15K, they’d sell 4X as many..
I wish people would just say it more bluntly... That EVF design is absolutely unacceptably bad, it's a £25k camera and the only design they came up with was this awful thing... Sony had a crutch to stand on in the FS7 days but not since then, yet we still just label it as "Not very good" or "pretty silly design" when it's absolutely stupid for a company that could do better, and this extends to the monitor overlays etc. Ultimately the EVF, IR pollution and lack of Open Gate has killed the camera to me even as a rental option, and if this is what is offered at £25k, I have little expectations with the FX9 and FX6 MK II other than very very minor improvements to their poor design in the Mk I. Great video as always, wish people would be less afraid to really say how bad some of Sony's design really is.
That VPG400 certification is only important on long, full bandwidth takes. Heatsoak is where non-certified media comes up short. When they heat up, the data rates drop. VPG400 is a minimum rate requirement. But, if you don’t ever hit the data rate that heatsoak has prevented, you’re golden.
Excellent video. After watching countless Burano videos. Ive come to the conclusion my F55 with the R7 is still my favorite workhorse. Thanks for the review!

That part hit me hard. It's the Burano roller coaster man. Lot's of ups, lots of downs. While interesting, I don't suggest getting on the ride at this time though. 😛
8:26 is what cured my GAS and made me stay with a7s3 - nobody will tell the difference anyway. It's sometimes even hard to justify renting out the FX6 let alone an FX9 or alexa when you could spend that money on things that everyone notices - like lightning, audio and set design. I was super hyped for Burano but it just feels like another Sony flop.
Great honest review, I feel about the same way; quirky to a fault, but still does a lot of things really well for small crews/ solo ops. One thing I think worth mentioning is the power draw. In LT, a 98w batt lasts about 1hr 45min depending on other AKS. In AVC it's over 2.5hr! Which is great for doc and solo shooting, something the Venice certainly cannot do. Using a screw on IR filter or mattebox with one is an easy fix, but also kind of defeats the purpose of the built in ND system. Clearly the same design team as the EVF loupe... I think for Version 1.1, it's a rough start, but Sony should be able to fix some of the quality of life things like SDI overlays, more recording modes, higher framerates, and add false color in future firmware updates. I think this time next year it will be the camera we were all actually expecting.
One can hope! You make a great point about the power draw in XAVC for doc solo shooting that I forgot to mention. I've thought about running a lightweight clip on matte box with an IR cut but like you said, it kind of defeats the purpose of internal NDs...

The biggest drawback is the price mainly considering the rolling shutter performance which isn't great. Should be around 15K, it would be a much more interesting camera for most production companies and indie filmmakers. I'm confident that Sony will release a major firmware update to improve some of its limitations as they usually do for the Cinema Line cameras though. For example, the FX3 was massively improved since its launch through firmware updates, it's essentially a new camera nowadays with the added Cine EI mode, 4K DCI, true 24FPS, lens breathing compensation, shutter angle coming in September among others features. Good job on the video.
Honestly that's why I stick with Arri in most scenario.. leave the image quality aside it's just such simple camera and no such weird issue. every time Sony makes the lower-tier camera it feels like it has been crippled or downgrade in some way.

If you need that Sony full frame anamorphic you're going to have to shell out for a Venice. The 1.6x anamorphic stretches out to 2x when using 16:9 sensor, which works well for very sharp anamorphic lenses because it softens the image up. You can use an FX3/A7S III with FX30 so you can digitally zoom in, which you can't do with a Blazar Remus.

The burano would be an amazing fx9 mkii but that pricepoint for these features ... WOW i do not know how this should compete with the red v raptor... trading all of the red features in just for AF, ND and Sensor Stabilisation ... Sony really needs to come down with the price an spend a lot of time in firmware upgrades
They really seem to have shot themselves in the foot with this camera. Now that the Burano exists, it likely means there won't be an FX9II, because the Burano basically IS that. But it's almost twice the cost of the FX9. So people who were hoping to upgrade from the FX9 to a true FX9II in the 10-15,000 price range, now have been priced out.
What lens and mount were you using when you saw the IR light pollution? If you notice they shipped shims and from my understanding it was to fix this issue as there is supposed to be a little light leak from the PL mount
Was super excited when it was announced last year. Currently own a V-RAPTOR and the major pros the BURANO was announced with (for me anyways) would be the IBIS, Internal NDs, and Autofocus. I was fully expecting to switch over. However, if the NDs are pretty much useless and rolling shutter is less than ideal I'm not seeing this to be as much competition to the V-RAPTOR as I had originally expected.
Thanks for the follow up video. I'm testing my Burano with surf videos. But I notice that when I don't tap people on the monitor to trigger focus, I get unsharp images (they aren't unusably blurred, but still not on focus). I set my Subject Recognition AF to Human priority and using Sony 200-600. Also I'm using Sony ECM-VG1 shotgun mic XLR and it doesn't seem to work. Also, thanks for your MID49 advice. It's a good quick fix.
Great video - I've been considering the Burano but sounds like typical Sony needing to address some key elements that not ready for prime time. That IR polution issue is really the one that Sony needs to address. Hopefully they reach out to you.
@@robchado Thats good to hear since that's beyond a firmware fix. I 100% agree about that EVF cable too - same complaint with the use of it on the FX9 and FX6. It's a terrible connector! Looking forward to the promised extension cable from Mid49.
The Burano was definitely for me but Sony didn't look after fx9 owners, we were neglected for firmware requests and they chased the fx6 and fx3 users instead pandering to them.
Have been considered upgrading from the Canon C500 II to this however I really just can't see the value, would love to see a image comparison especially after the latest RAW update to the Canon however I highly doubt its worth the price tag jump with all the drawbacks that come with it.
Hey Robert, I have a question about the 7 cam set up. Did you have a good remote iris control system? I was wondering because i have a live recording show coming up and was looking in to a solid system that could adjust Iris on the fly remotely. Thanks Robert
If I we're you, I would be returning the camera. The cons mentioned, especially the readout speed and IR pollution are laughable for a $25K camera that was just released in 2024. From everything i've seen and heard its definitely to up to par with other brands, and not even anywhere near up to par with the Venice 1 or 2.
Can this camera be used without the default monitor? Or does it always have to be used? Example, use it on a gimbal with an external Shinobi monitor attached to the handle.
I'm so interested by the MAC-1 monitor mount. Do u think it's worth the money? Can it hold the smallhd and teradek combo without falling down? looking for your answer!
I agree with everything you stated in the video and your honesty on the flaws/cons. My only question would be and I am sorry in advance if the question is annoying. Some of these things would be fixed in major firmware updates? I almost bought one of these but now I feel like waiting till I see the one or two year time span of firmware fixes and updates. You'd think for this price point the real issues you addressed in the video wouldn't exist on release but here we are. Sadness.
phew I can't afford this camera, but I was really considering it these last days. This video put my expectations back in check again. Super interesting with the IR pollution
Given that it's supposed to primarily be a documentary camera... WHY did they remove the ISO/GAIN and White Balance physical swiches? Arrgrg! Yes i know they are on the monitor buttons, but when it's shoulder mounted with an EVF, single-operators will reach up to flick those switches between WB and ISO presets.
Honestly, a Canon C300 mark i is very close in filmic image. For 1300$… Granted, with the same UA-cam compression. These flagship Cameras (also many Canons) are way way to expensive for a normal person. Even for a professional. 25k?! Not in a million years.
What I find interesting about the “it’s not worth $25 thousand” debate is that the Arri Alexa mini LF and 35 are $20 - 30K more than this camera, and while those cameras make some of the most amazing images on the planet, is the image and usability of those cameras really worth that much more? Mind you I’ve never had the pleasure of using either camera. So I have no frame of reference other than the image I see.
It would be great to see some FX6 ProRes RAW (maybe ProRes 4444 XQ transcoded) vs X-OCN LT. And see if that resolution and that codec are really worth it ($19K). I still don't understand the Sony Burano. It is not a great camera for rental like the RED with which it competes, or the Venice I, but it is not too versatile for a user-operator either. Indie feature films that would accept a Burano also accept an FX6 or even an FX3. Maybe it is a bait for those who were thinking of buying a used Venice 1 with thousands of hours, for that same price. 2 fully rigged FX6s, a suitcase of primes and some Sony zooms are a better deal IMHO.
Crazy that the FX6 is still such a more usable camera than the Burano. Looks like it will still be a standard until they release something better. Burano has been a big miss for me so far which is a shame, was looking forward to its release.

Both E-mount and PL. 🫤
Bro this is dope. Thank you for you time. This has helped me A LOT!!!
Thanks for being honest Rob. Very insightful.
The IR on this is a bummer. Been using the FX series and Venice for the longest time but never saw it creep soooo much on these.
Great review Robert!
Nice review! and it’s so weird that the camera doesn't have opengate mode at this price range. Nobody is talking about its anamorphic mode.
thanks for the video, i was excited about the Burano, but now i'm gonna stick with the FX6 for a while
Great point, Venice 1 pkg then add a FX6 pkg when needing AF near the same investment as a Burano pkg.
Just proves to me how much my C500mkii was ahead of it's time.
great review and very well explained, please share your first imporessions on BM Pyxis 6k also.
Great video - I've been considering the Burano but sounds like typical Sony needing to address some key elements that not ready for prime time. That IR polution issue is really the one that Sony needs to address. Hopefully they reach out to you.
They have...
@@robchado Thats good to hear since that's beyond a firmware fix. I 100% agree about that EVF cable too - same complaint with the use of it on the FX9 and FX6. It's a terrible connector! Looking forward to the promised extension cable from Mid49.
The card at 10:00 is missing, other than that tho - amazing video and information about the camera
How good is the dynamic range? I am looking for an improvement over the Sony A7SIII.
Can you not black balance with the NDs enabled to mitigate the IR pollution or is it just too dark in that process for it to matter at all?
$25k camera with rolling shutter???? WTF?? No way!! Should be global shutter!!😮
Can’t believe the rolling shutter on that one
also very honest review at the end.
So glad someone finally showed that IR pollution some more! Thanks for the video.
The Burano was definitely for me but Sony didn't look after fx9 owners, we were neglected for firmware requests and they chased the fx6 and fx3 users instead pandering to them.
Solid and authentic review - thank you.
Thanks for the detailed and honest review!!
Great job! Thank you so much!!! 🏆
SOLID review Rob, freagin SOLID man. Always appreciate the detail you put in and real thoughts. This should be Sony's official review video 👍👍
They might make even less sales if it were their official video 😂
Great video. Audio sounded like it had a slight echo from wall bounce.
You can, but you’re locked into HDMI.
Best overview I seen so far, with real world scenarios.
thank you for your honesty
I'm so interested by the MAC-1 monitor mount. Do u think it's worth the money? Can it hold the smallhd and teradek combo without falling down? looking for your answer!
Probably one of my favorite accessories. Can hold the Teradek module no problem.
@@robchado Thanks a lot!
Watching this like I can afford this camera
I love he's talking to me like I'm about to buy one
Weird. I don't have the IR pollution issues or the soft 6K. Wonder if it's a unit to unit thing.
Sadness.
Could you purchase just a .3 IRND and use it in combo with the internal electronic ND? Or would you need an entire set of IRND? Thanks
Yes, I'll discuss this in the next video.
phew I can't afford this camera, but I was really considering it these last days. This video put my expectations back in check again. Super interesting with the IR pollution
Given that it's supposed to primarily be a documentary camera... WHY did they remove the ISO/GAIN and White Balance physical swiches? Arrgrg! Yes i know they are on the monitor buttons, but when it's shoulder mounted with an EVF, single-operators will reach up to flick those switches between WB and ISO presets.
that floff cutie on back at 3:31 must be Director of this Review hem hem hem hem
Honestly, a Canon C300 mark i is very close in filmic image. For 1300$… Granted, with the same UA-cam compression. These flagship Cameras (also many Canons) are way way to expensive for a normal person. Even for a professional. 25k?! Not in a million years.
Thank you for a good review, instead of the typical over hyping review from cinematic youtubers
VERY helpful video, thanks Robert.
I'm lost. If it's the same sensor as the A9 III, how does it still have rolling shutter?
For a second I thought your dog was stuffed, and then I finally saw him move lol
Is the rolling shutter worse than FX6 or FX9?
