    Am I the only one who would have just built a "glue gun stand" like the ones for soldering irons?

  • @mickleman52
    @mickleman52 7 років тому +2

    I might be wrong to suggest this, but maybe a spring to the mechanism, kind of like how bike breaks work. The default position for a bike break is open with the use of springs, but when you pull on the cable it closes. So you could use a spring to keep it open, and then when in use (finger on trigger) the servo pulls back. This could allow for a more flexible cable run, and all you would need is some kind of cable housing.

    Are you creating more problems than you are solving? You are also driving up cost of production, but is that added cost bringing benefit to the core use of the product?

    Couldn't you avoid the flip stand altogether if you just had a wide enough base under the handle, maybe weighted with the battery? Just stand it up like a cordless drill.

    He is using a simple but very effective glue gun to help make a prototype of the super advanced, expensive, complicated one. I know some people are lining up to buy this once it's done but I will stick with my simple and inexpensive one.

    Could you find a reason/feature that could somehow be implemented via hydraulics? Also, maybe use some sort of biometric sensor to allow only authorized users to operate the glue gun.

    Instead of putting the touch sensor on the trigger I'd put it on the back of the handle where my thumb could reach it. Right under the trough where the glue stick will lie. Have it act as a simple on/off. Touch it once and the stand comes out. Touch again and it goes back in. Keeping it out of the way of normal use would help prevent accidental triggering.

    Now that you've already built an extruder, can you make some teflon inserts so you can extrude PLA ?

    The value added by the stand cannot possibly justify the cost.

    For the stand, you can make it more compact by having the servo wire go diagonally through the board and attaching directly to the stand legs. Then have a 3D printed triangular stop on the stand pivot point to keep it in place when extended. Something like this: imgur.com/a/LOeum where the blue bit extends out sideways a bit to hold the stand rod in place when activated.

    Rack and pinion idea would have been cool and possibly more robust without getting in the way of the hot end like a cross pinion with a belt or gear to drive it or like a mini differential like gear box so you could place the motor perpendicular to the pinion mechanism and I don’t think complex is bad as long as it’s robust and reliable but the K.I.S.S principal will help with cost and profit margins

    If you tie a cable around a rod or wheel in the servo's shaft, and have the same done to the back part of the stand, then you won't need as much height for that mechanism to operate properly.
    But still, I think it should move much faster than that, and a servo won't cut it.

    I was thinking instead of a capacitance sensor on the trigger how about a metal plate on the handle and one on the trigger. Touch both it creates a circuit so it's down to 1 or 0. The other suggestion would be go for a sci-fi look and have a permanent stand built into a cool looking gun design.

  • @ludwigtheurer

    I think a gravity flip open mechanism would be more practical, or perhaps a spring-loaded stand that you lock when you have your finger on the trigger (not fully depressed?). but I'm always in for cute robotic legs.

    What about a stand facing forward that the normal placement wants to be next to the main body then have a small bar out in front that can be pulled back that would wedge the stand in the open position? kind of like wedgeing a persons jaw open in a way.

  • @DevilsHandyman

    Couldn't you use the trigger mechanism to pull up the stand? I'm not sure how to avoid it prematurely lowering but it seems that could be solved.

    3:35 A glue gun knows where it is at all times. It also knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, we obtain what we call deviation...

    To get rid of the need for another electromagnetical component, why don't you make the stand something like a modified gold bag stand. That way the act of picking up the glue gun can retract the stand.

    That stand just adds more failure points (think of everything required to work together to make that stand work) to the product, thus making it a less overall reliable product that's meant for a simple task.

      That's like an unreliable super hero. Useless. If it's broken it losses all of it's "superness". So instead of "Super Man" we have "The Greatest American Hero"? :) If it's going to one day by "sellable", then it needs to be reliable.

    • @twjonckheere
      @twjonckheere 7 років тому

      Maybe the glue gun should have add-on modules instead (other modules could include a light mount, fan, different grips, etc). You can use it as a standard glue gun or buy this as a clip on motorized stand if you want. That way you can use as is or make it more complicated. Plus if a module breaks, you just easily replace it or take it off. The main product still works as designed. Best of both worlds. Of course the "modules" will need to be light and simple. Making it a 5 pound glue gun with all the modules wouldn't be of much use.

    • @twjonckheere
      @twjonckheere 7 років тому +1

      Added thought. If the stand instantly folded when you even touched the trigger that would cause issues. What if you bump the trigger, or when you go to grab it your finger touches the trigger a split second before you get a good grip on it? That means you have a hot glue gun falling to the table or on your hand before you're ready for it to release it's stand.

    Could you not have the electronics in a base unit and an umbilical connecting the base unit to the glue gun where the heater and glue stick feed motor is maybe you might be able to have the motor control micro controller communicating with base unit using RS232, maybe ditch the AT-Tiny and use the Raspberry Pi MKIII in the base unit and it can communicate with the micro controller in the glue gun head unit, run the firmware under FreeBSD latest version for the Raspberry Pi.

    • @mr_gerber

      omg, I thought this was overkill already. Raspberry PI for a glue gun? That's insane.

    Way way way way over complicated! Or is THAT your point? In the end you are going to have something EXPENSIVE, only a little bit useful (maybe), totally unreliable, and not very mass producible (not sure if that's a concern or not). I have ideas that would improve this a lot, but I am having trouble understanding the point of this device in the first place. Maybe I'm missing something?

      its called super glue gun for a reason. Plus its a practice of engineering . The tool is very simple which is why the improvement ideas makes an excercise fo what you can do ... even if its over complicating a simple tool

    • @AtimatikArmy
      @AtimatikArmy 7 років тому +2

      The micro controller is just one element of the ridiculous devise! This thing has a servo operated kickstand for gosh sakes! What I see is that they took a simple, useful, and very reliable device and added a bunch of useless junk to it that will indeed make it much more expensive, can only make it much less reliable, and finally, why? I never had a problem with my glue gun, it works whenever I need it to just fine, it's lightweight, completely reliable and maybe it's only shortcoming is that it drips a little out of the tip, but it's not that big of a deal, just throw down an old piece of cardboard down if that concerns you, it doesn't concern me. Then even the branding of this thing being called a super glue gun is wrong. This is a hot melt glue gun, super glue is a different kind of glue sometimes known as CA glue. Branding 101 is to not be confusing and this is a big fail there as well. Sorry, this time and effort would have been much better spent on something that is actually useful or needed in society. What we have here is just some serious nerding out, and not very effectively I might add, on something that is nothing more than a novelty at best. I can't help but scratch my head and think, this is what's wrong with society in general, our priorities have become completely out of whack.
