  • On 29 April 1956, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein was interviewed by ITN's Reginald Bosanquet on the occasion of the general's retirement from the military. Speaking for 10 minutes, Montgomery discussed the risk of World War Three, as well as his reasons for supporting an end to national service in Britain.
Talk of national service, a citizen's army, and even conscription is once again prevalent following comments from Britain's military chief, General Sir Patrick Sanders, about the state of the British military and the need to prepare Britain's civilian population for the possibility of war.
