London Can Take It [1940, WWII documentary of one night of 247 nights of the bombing of London]

  • The appearance of German bombers in the skies over London during the afternoon of September 7, 1940 heralded a tactical shift in Hitler's attempt to subdue Great Britain. During the previous two months, the Luftwaffe had targeted RAF airfields and radar stations for destruction in preparation for the German invasion of the island.
With invasion plans put on hold and eventually scrapped, Hitler turned his attention to destroying London in an attempt to demoralize the population and force the British to come to terms. At around 4:00 PM on that September 7th day, 348 German bombers escorted by 617 fighters blasted London until 6:00 PM. Two hours later, guided by the fires set by the first assault, a second group of raiders commenced another attack that lasted until 4:30 the following morning.
This was the beginning of the Blitz - a period of intense bombing of London and other cities that continued until the following May. For the next consecutive 76 days, London was bombed either during the day or night. Fires consumed many portions of the city. Residents sought shelter wherever they could find it - many fleeing to the Underground stations that sheltered as many as 177,000 people during the night. In the worst single incident, 450 were killed when a bomb destroyed a school being used as an air raid shelter. Londoners and the world were introduced to a new weapon of terror and destruction in the arsenal of twentieth century warfare.
The Blitz ended on May 11, 1941 - after 247 nights of bombing - when Hitler called off the raids in order to move his bombers east in preparation for Germany's invasion of Russia.

I remember the sound of the sirens and the doodle bugs coming over. I was 4 and our house got bombed. My dad was seriously injured. I feel grateful every day that me and my family survived those horrific nights and proud to be British.

Anne Abbott I can't imagine what it was like during the war. My grandparents didn't really talk about it except saying that night after night themselves and other Londoners grow more and more defiant. My great grandmother worked at the Woolwich Arsenal on night's. She told me that when the sirens sounded they just put on a tin helmet and carried on working. Outstanding and very brave generation.

On the day of the London tube bombings (7/7) and the second attempted bombings two weeks later, I was evacuated from my home in 'shepherds Bush. I stood with thousands of others outside of the BBC HQ. That is as far as we could get near to Shepherds Bush.
I was interviewed in the street by a young French reporter outside the BBC. He was aghast at how there was no apparent fear or panic in the crowds and none in me. He said "If this was France, people would be running everywhere"
I told him "This is a city that was bombed for 5 years from the air. 57 nights and half those days too, for a period. My mother was there. How an earth are a handful of Terrorists with a few home made bombs going to scare a city of people that have endured that. What the hell do they think they can achieve here?!" The young reporter smiled broadly.
52 people were killed for nothing that day!
I was not allowed back to my poor starving cats for two days.

I love this American geezer waxing lyrical about us Londoners, so complimentary. My Mum was 13 years old when the Germans were bombing us. She lived in South Kensington and went to Jack Barclay's underground car park to shelter where my Grandad was a night watchman. Jack Barclay welcomed the local people in to potentially save their lives. However my Mum used to tell me that the French Lisse refused entry to the locals She was such a resilient person, nothing ever phased her. Londoners were tough in those days!

Thank you for this. Although this is a war time propaganda film, it, at least, demonstrates a part of psychology in London then: bitter wits and courage. Wars, whichever side wins, kills people. Yes, indeed, so many were killed in Dresden, Berlin and Tokyo. Further, the two bombs hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killed so many and silenced Imperial Japan. If Nazis dropped a-bombs in London and Liverpool, I wonder whether or not the Imperial Britain, of courageous people, became silent?

It might be propaganda, we were trying to get the Americans to join us, but it is all true. I spent the whole blitz in Hampstead London. I recognised the scenes shown. My mum was a bit frightened when the bombing was at it's height, but my dad wasn't scared at all. If he was he didn't show it. Nobody did.

Highlandking1.....I might sound like a crystal gazer. But, the next 10 or 15 years will so many changes in the Third World that there might not be any mass migration (for economic reasons). I am talking BIG changes that could make the Third World become fully developed countries to the extent that the people there may no longer want to move to Europe or N America. Technology created by multinationals may transform these countries for good. More exports from first world to third world in future
