- This is an extract from a speech given by Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw on leadership. In the video the Field Marshal emphasises the importance of discipline and why it is important not only in the Army but also in life in general.

I'm 61 , but I call myself a UA-cam generation guy. As comfortable with 61 year olds as I'm with 16 year olds. Sawaal umr ka nahi hai ,sawaal hai how young are you at heart like Sam Maneckshaw, the first and the last Field Marshall of India

We should never consider dumb bollywood celebrities as our idols, but a man like Field Marshall Maneckshaw. He was and will ever remain indeed a perfect example of an ideal man.
No wonder why even ppl like Mrs Gandhi ji who was the PM of India then had to listen to Maneckshaw ji and could not argue with him for good....
While everybody knows how Indira ji herself had a very strong personality and no one could convince her easily when she made up her mind regarding particular matters.

Absolutely, he would have thousand times acknowledged had he did all of what he did in todays social media time.
Discipline is the core of every one’s personality. Coming in time, leaving in time says about the time management skills of a person. Keeping a presentable attire tells about his desire to respect others and their sensibilities. Humility is a public relations exercise-to make those less fortunate , insecure people feel good about your skills and fortune and making them cooperate with you. Humor helps people appreciate you for who you are .
Slowly the discipline set by our ancestors is getting eroded.

It is unbelievable that as a person and what he did for the country is thousand time more precious than what Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna did. Not just his work, but he as a person is far superior personality / influencer / icon / and a rare national hero that India has ever seen and yet we as a country make temples and worship actors like they are beyond anybody.
** Not to be disrespectful to Amitabh Bachchan or Rajesh Khanna, they are national icon in their own way but it is just unbelievable that we as a country have less heard, less celebrated, and less understood the real hero's of the country. May be that is why we are still a "Developing Country".

My dad was in army, I remember, how discipline and clean he was. even after being born in a very indiscipline tribal society.
Being born in a Tribal society is not the synonym of being indiscipline. Tribals are in fact more disciplined and ethical than the so-called the modern elite society.

Discipline is one of the pillars of their existence no doubt the more stronger pillars are courage and tenacity,you can learn whatever you can in a training,but its upto you when you are fighting with the opponents ,what exactly drives you at that moment to keep on fighting is always on the soldier,mostly its their undying commitment to their oath,and since you are ready to lose your life in fighting for people you dont even know,nothing is more selfless than that

Discipline is very important and Mr. Sam ManekshawJi had a very command on the speech.
But he's sounding more like a saheb. The times are changing now.
- Dhoti has been a part of our culture and we can take pride in it if someone wears it vis-a-vis wearing jeans.
- Being clean shaved or keeping a beard is a personal choice. Even during times when kings ruled, soldier used to keep beard and so do sikh soldiers now. If someone wants to judge personal hygiene by these standards, what can I say.
Again being punctual, efficient, on time and being humble are a good virtue that can be learnt from Sam ManekshawJi through his speech.
Well kept beard is not the issue here, he is referring to scruffy ruffian look which is the hallmark of most youngsters these days. Also he wasn't against wearing a dhoti , he was against wearing it in a whimsical manner which shows 4/5 th of legs . Lastly he spoke with a slight British accent due to his schooling and training and life within the British Administration pre - Independence but his contribution India is much more than a million so called Desi Indians who are corrupt , selfish and good for nothing counts but speak with a Desi accent and wear Dhotis all the times ( viz the typical Indian politician). I don't think you or I have the right to Judge this Legend .

With due respect to him, Agreed on Timing and Discipline but nothing wrong on wearing DHOTI. It is our ancient and proud cloth of our country. It is unique as well.
Quite right .... nothing wrong with wearing the Dhoti. He is driving home the point of wearing clean and well maintained attire something that is drilled into military personnel. He is commenting on the informality of the clothes worn on a formal occassion. A smart individual wearing a well maintained dhoti or lungi could look much better than some unkempt individual vearing a shabby lounge suit
Yeah even Atal bihari vajpayee used to wear dhoti to all his rallies and public meetings and won thundering applauses from the audience.
OK. Wear it to your office, unless you are a shopkeeper.
And don't forget to wear chappals too.
What he is trying to say is there are presentable ways of wearing dhoti. That kind of short dhoti wearing is meant for work attire (farmers for example or bicycle riding )

Discipline is important part of life everywhere. But I find army officers of his generation are disrespectful to others. Which I find surprising because they get full respect. Coming to intillectuals of different university their behaviour is surprising different for same person. Strange world. No perception is correct expect living life with discipline.
