Thank you so much for this!!! I'm currently prepping material to apply for a PhD which will be on memories in media utilizing my grandparents tapes! Your video made the last element of working it out so much quicker
Digitizing now, I think I picked 4:3 without thinking...do you think 16:9 will stretch too much? using an elgato, we have 1940s-1970s family home video that was on film then put onto VHS..really loving this, may have a new hobby lol
I personally did most of my videos in 16:9. . . and did not think it stretched too much. But I get a ton of people asking how to do 4:3. . . I assume because they want to keep it as original as possible. What I recommend is take a small video and record 2 versions, one in 16:9 and one in 4:3. . . . they view them both on your computer, TV, and Phone and see which one you prefer.
Thanks for that, I'm using 4:3 retro consoles with an OSSC, in to OBS. One thing, is there a way to do aspect ratio per source? As in, I want to stream them, so ideally I'd have the Genesis/PlayStation/whatever in 4:3 but webcam & other elements in 16:9?
EDIT: Don't worry, I worked it out! If anyone else wants to know, you simply skip the canvas resizing step & go straight to the one for the source. That way you can have a 16:9 output for your stream, containing as many sources & different aspect ratios as you want. Thanks, wouldn't have worked that out on my own, great vid. Subbed.

Holy shit, someone actually did it. Thanks.
Hey man great video! Would this possibly be the best way to do this (but backwards) To put newer files on a vhs tape and have it not looked zoomed in?
When I'm recording home videos from VHS in OBS, I get intermittent blue screens (like it shows in the intro section). Any idea why or how to fix it?
Legend! Great video. Thank you! 👍🏻
