    Hi there, not sure if you're still be responding to comments. I tried following this method but for some reason, the video playing from the tape doesn't show up on the screen of my laptop and all I see is a black screen. I tried all the individual parts separately and all of them seem to be working fine, however when I come to hook all of them up it just doesn't happen. The only things I'm doing that's different from your method is using a Sony Handcam, and a macbook instead of a windows device. Any suggestions or directions that you think are worth giving a shot?

    Thanks so much. Everything worked perfectly, as explained. One note though: if your old VCR has a HDMI output port, then you do not need the AV to HDMI converter (white device)! Just plug the HDMI cable from VCR to the Video Capture device and then plug the USB end to the PC. Thanks again 🙏

    Hi. Thank you for the very useful video. 10-20 years ago, I converted some video tapes from a VHS Panasonic camera (1986) to DVD (ISO format), using a video capture similar to Easy CAP Video Capture. At that time, there was 32bit windows system and no HDMI. Lately, I converted some VTS VOB files to mp4 format, using VLC media player, but the picture is horrible. I can hardly recognize myself! Do you think, that if I repeat the conversion of the VHS tapes with the method you propose, I will get a better results?

    A TRULY outstanding LIVING IN THE PAST video, including your extremely impressive thoroughness and perfectly patient delivery! My admittedly slightly bizarre question though is: What's needed to do the REVERSE - how do I record website content from my MAC desktop ONTO a VHS tape? I have a TV; VCR; VHS tapes; MAC desktop (no HDMI port in the back - but thunderbolt); RCA plugs; and HDMI cables. Do NOT have a RCA to HDMI converter (MINI AV2HDMI converter), but will buy whatever you suggest on Amazon. Is that the converter I need - OR - will it be a different one? Also do NOT have the OBS software you mentioned or the HDMI to USB capture card ... but will buy the latter on Amazon as well, if I need it. Thanks so much, in advance, for your assistance and hope I've adequately explained my situation!!

It got me 95% of the way there, but for maybe someone looking for a hint, OBS did not see my Video Capture Device on the drop-down list when adding "Device". After much cursing & googling, it turn out my Windows 11 > Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Cameras > Camera Privacy Settings > Camera Access was set to "Off". Same with my System > Sound > Input (yours might be slightly different). Thank you again!!

    Thanks for that, I'm using 4:3 retro consoles with an OSSC, in to OBS. One thing, is there a way to do aspect ratio per source? As in, I want to stream them, so ideally I'd have the Genesis/PlayStation/whatever in 4:3 but webcam & other elements in 16:9?

    • @yrysroda8592
      @yrysroda8592 3 місяці тому

      EDIT: Don't worry, I worked it out! If anyone else wants to know, you simply skip the canvas resizing step & go straight to the one for the source. That way you can have a 16:9 output for your stream, containing as many sources & different aspect ratios as you want. Thanks, wouldn't have worked that out on my own, great vid. Subbed.

    I ordered the gizmos you prescribed and brought my VCR up from the basement, blew the dust off of it, and started to hook things up. @@LivinginthePast2021 I got it to work on my desktop and was able to view the videos I wanted to record. When I tried to record, however, I got an error message stating that the output failed and I needed to check the log. The message also mentioned encoders and told me to make sure they are up to date. I could not figure out if I have these encoders on my computer (I'm not a techie), but figured my 10-11 year old computer probably doesn't have updated encoders. I then switched to our laptop which is a few years newer, and loaded OBS onto it. It worked! I was able to record a video. I am so pleased! I had not seen these home videos for more than 20 years. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this and for responding to my questions so promptly. You are doing a great service.

    I just looked up OBS Studio and it looks like it requires an enormous amount of space on your computer and possibly a computer with special digitizing capabilities. Am I correct on this, or will a standard desktop PC with Windows 10 work? I don't want to buy all the parts I need if I can't download and use the OBS Studio. I love your video, clarity, and sense of humor. Thanks!

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021 4 місяці тому

      You don't need anything that fancy to run OBS. . . but the better the processer the less pull on your computer (if you are looking to do other stuff while recording your tapes). I started doing this with a cheap HP laptop that had an i3 processor. . . it worked fine but OBS would take up about 10-13% of my CPU while connected to my VCR. Now I have an HP ZBook that has an i7 processor and OBS uses less than 1% of my CPU. OBS is less than 500KB so it is small. . . but when you record your video files can get rather large. I plug in an external hard drive and write all of my recordings to it vs. my computer hard drive. Just for example, I just did about 100 minutes of a recording on the 2nd highest quality and it took up about 17GB. You don't have to record that much at a time but if you are looking to just put in a tape and record the whole thing then a big hard drive or external hard drive is gonna be important. Standard desktop with Windows 10 should be fine as OBS is compatible with Windows 10 and 11 (but not XP). Hope that makes sense and helps.

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021 5 місяців тому

      You have to do it one collar at at time. So connect the first collar. . . build your fence. . . activate it, then put it on your dog (and disconnect the Bluetooth). Then do the same thing with the second collar. . . . power on the second collar. . . build your fence. . . .activate it, put it on your second dog. You only use the app to build the fence and activate the collars. Hope that makes sense.
