The Cheap Muffling Material That BEATS Gaff Tape & Moongel

  • Whenever muffling is needed, most drummers either reach for moon gel or gaff tape. Which is better? Or should we be muffling at all?… Furthermore, what if there’s a third muffling material that’s actually better-sounding than either of these two things? Today we’re testing, comparing, and finding out which muffling material is truly the best. We also learn about the importance of tuning first, then muffling. Not every ringy snare or sympathetic tom can be easily fixed with muffling. Sometimes tuning is the key. However, muffling is an excellent tool for getting a gushy, mellow, focused, punchy, or just plain dead drum sound.

I have a set of Rogers and they have internal muffling you can dial in and it’s all I ever need. I can also change the sound in a second easily. Have no idea why internal muffling went away on drums. They need to revive that again like the vintage kits once did

This is why if you look at 66Samus drum kit he has lil sticky autumn leaves on his drumheads. I knew it was cheaper, I had no idea it worked better.

Steve, Love that Tom sound ..... I found that The Gatt tape I use was sticking too much. Actually hard to peel off the coated or uncoated heads... Is that normal? I have a Cheapo Gammon drum kit. I have been able to to tune the Toms pretty well including having installed new Evans G2 batter and G1 Reso heads ... But on the Floor Tom (16 X16) I have had to put 5 Moongel equivalents on the Batter head to lessen the resonance. I am looking for just that RIGHT boing from the drum which has been hard to achieve. Bottom line: So by detuning the batter heads, you achieve less "ringing"? Sorry for the Newbie questions...

Ha I just use the Blue or Green tape used for Painting. It removes easy and muffles good enough for me. I do have other tricks that are dirt cheap - I just go for a method I can remove quickly if I want that ring or resonance to come back. The more I can play the drum without anything added is a bonus so I really try to focus on my kit sound first. One of my fav muffle vibes is just using the cotton doo-rag - rolled up when not in use but attached to the rim so I can just bring it over as much as I need. That does so much instantly if need be.

One tip when using Gaffer tape for muting if you need to deaden a drum significantly is to roll a strip into a very tight cylinder and then tape that to the drum. You get a lot more mass of tape absorbing vibrations in a small area so it will take it much further without covering your drums in heaps of different strips of tape everywhere.

Hey Stephen: good video. If you're looking for a cheap but effective way to muffle, I've also had decent luck with dollar store sticky felt pads.

I think it is not about better or not better but what you wanna get as a result.... and to me they all might have a similar effect but sounded different in doing so. So I guess I would try out different things and stick to whatever suits best in the particular situation. But I like the idea of trying stuff out that could work and see where it leads you

I use felt furniture feet protection dohickies. I buy them from the dollar store in a variety of sizes and shapes. They can't be easily removed like gaff tape or moongel. This can either be good or bad, depending on the situation.

One of the things that work quite well for me when I need muffling is just a simple piece of paper. If you really need muffling but you haven't brought any moongel (or window clings in this case) and you don't want to tape your drums, the paper does work (especially on the snare).

I have a few packs of sweet Halloween themed stickies, they work well with judicious use.

The only problem with the dollar store stickers is they will stain the heads if left on. I use any sticker that is white, like Christmas stuff.

It sags when warm and staines the head. I like it, but I'm checking alternatives. I miss those adjustable internal snare mute pads. For some odd reason those went away.

Depends on the age and quality of the kit as well . my old tamas ring way too much. Made well and made in japan but just to thick shell wise.

what i have found with the dollar store stickies is that the dye in the stuff stains the heads. not a fan.

The moon gel it doesnt makes those heads dirty as those stinky toys, its a kind of more "solid" gel. There indeed other optinions of gels.
So far, i end up suing tape because its always in hands, someone on the room will have it for emergency.

I hate all kind of external muffling. Pre-dampened heads like EC2 or powerstroke 3/4 are fine but for the life of me I would never stick tape on my drums.

I would for a live set where sometimes you want to play with some ring and sometimes you want some punch. Gaff tape is an easy way to switch.

I muffle my snare, because, as an example, that snare sounds atrocious to me. I wouldn’t mind my snare having a longer ring, but it’s the nasty fundamental that rings.
