This is a great idea! I just found they'd chewed the rim on one of mine after we started getting water in our kitchen and one of the others was also chewed previously as the prior homeowners seem to have patched it with roofing adhesive or similar product. I'm gonna wrap both stacks.

Noticed a scratching sound above me a few days ago and after going outside saw that it was a squirrel chewing on a vent pipe (PVC). I'll use this if I can borrow a 2-story ladder, or get someone to do it. Thanks!

I came up with something really similar on my own a couple of years ago.... That worked great, but now they have chewed right through the lead at the ridges!! You may want to consider extending your mesh cloth to cover over the ridges. I'm going to try and seal with asphalt cement and put it all around on the ridges too. Hopefully they won't like the taste of the cement! Ultimately, I'll have to have the vent sleeve replaced by a roofer I suppose!

Hi Amanda. Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. So far we have not seen them chewing the lead flange. But I wouldn't be surprised if they try. That's a great suggestion! Thank you for taking the time out to leave that for us. Best wishes with getting those squirrels to leave your roof vents alone ☺️

@@YouCanDoIt2 Thank you! I ended up sealing the gaps to prevent leaks, AND I put the hardware cloth around the base using the same method you suggest! I hope that will work in the short term. They really made a mess. When I was up there, I saw they were also chewing on the ridges on the lead sleeve at the base of the post with my power lines! I sealed and put the hw cloth around that too. Thank you again!

Squirrels will also chew the base if you cover the top like this. Ask me how I know 😅

Neat idea. I wonder if that would frost up in winter.

Hi. Thank you for watching the video. We have gone through 2 snow seasons without issues. I'm really impressed with this simple trick. I used to wake up in the morning from the sounds of squirrels eating the pipe. It took about 2 weeks after the installation of these covers for the squirrels to realize that they couldn't chew on the pipes. Now ...there is absolutely no squirrel activity!! Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment... always appreciated 👍

I can speak from experience - that area at the bottom that is uncovered by the hardware cloth will be eaten.

Several of my neighbors are using gutter strainers over these vents attached with a metal clamp. Is there any downside to using these?

Hi. Thank you so much for watching and leaving a question. I guess it would really depend on the brand and how thick the mesh is on the gutter strainer. Squirrels are crazy! They will chew right through the tin vent jackets like it's paper. We have now had these particular ones on our vents for about a year now and have not had a single squirrel issue. It would be horrible to put something on your roof and have it fail especially if you have a very tall or scary roof that you are working on. So used this exact welded wire for the bottoms of my raised garden beds so that moles can't get into my beds and they also do not seem to be able to chew through this stuff. I wish you the best with your project 👍
