Hello from A Grandma Retired Teacher from Georgia. I just found your channel a few weeks ago. I have watched some of your early videos. You have really lost a lot of weight! Awesome. I have been decluttering for about 3 years. When I retired I suddenly had all my SCHOOL STUFF at home wow. So I am in somewhat of a maintenance mode. Love to watch you while I declutter. Thanks.

I would do FaceTime and then mail the stuff. My mom did that with me, and it was much easier to make decisions from afar. It can be kind of stressful to do it during a visit. Being in your childhood house puts you in a different mindset. Making decisions where your adult house is and thinking about where you would keep the stuff really helps the decision-making process.

VACUUM PARTS: suggestion - place parts in a CLEAR plastic bag/clear garbage bag (recycle bag) and hang it on the basement wall near where you home the vacuum-type machines. Otherwise, the parts will continue to be overlooked and unavailable when you want them.
I also hang my mop covers in a mesh bag on the same hook with the steam mops or on a command hook directly next to them.
I enjoy watching you sort your photos. I’ve done that already. Disposed of thousands of pictures and already gave family members those that pertain to them. I kept only the ones I really love. What an amazing feeling it is to get out from under the photo burden mountain. They are a burden until dealt with.
I saw a lot of great comments for dealing with the son’s papers. It might be well worth the money to just buy a large USPS flat rate box and just get rid of them. Personally, I’d give them a quick look through and pull out what looks like trash to YOU then FaceTime him for confirmation. Flat-rate mail the rest.

Decant or sell.... I think that you should take a good look in your pantry, think about what and if you want to decant. Then decide what to do. If you decant, use what you like and need, sell the rest.
Another idea. Before you take the guinneapig stuff to the shelter, look around in the house if there is anything else they might want. Animal shelters often want old blankets, towels aso, cleaning products (even open) and toys for animals.

Refrigerate the flour or freeze it, keeps it fresh. The flour is ready to use right out of freezer...no little bugs in it. Also the English muffins that were donated you could freeze as well. Or refrigerate. You are making great progress & keeping me motivated too. Have a load for donation tomorrow in my car. 😀🥰

That man of yours is a great partner. Proud to say mine is a great partner to me also. And, it feels so nice when he voluntarily does something I needed to do. I know he appreciates when I do something on his mental list of to dos.
▫️Sell. If you’re not using them now - you don’t need them to solve an existing problem. I have canisters for various types of pasta & dried beans. I rarely use them now. I think handling the bags with a twist tie just seems easier. These dried goods are stored in a basket. I have used canning jars for somethings.

I suggest taking a bag with mail etc back up to your office and sorting through it there. Never take such bags to a basement. Also, discipline yourself to sort as it comes into the house. If Robin is more gifted in this area, perhaps he'd be willing to take over the chore.

  • @brendamontanye9877
    @brendamontanye9877 7 місяців тому +3

For the papers: I wouldn't love sending them because of the cost and because I sort of bet he wouldn't actually love/need them all. I'd start with a pre-sort - like certificates, awards, school work, financial stuff, etc. I wonder if some could be scanned and sent as a folder of documents? (and then discard the originals). Having him look at it from afar, like on Facetime, could remove some attachment. He could also ask for advice about if he needs certain items to document something. Sometimes when I am specifically looking at papers I just want someone to hear the story and then I can discard it. He's all grown up with a family now and some of his college and high school items might be starting to be less interesting. Does he have a memory box? You could ask if any of these items are good enough to be in it.
Obviously you can't decide what is important to him For him but you could probably do it With him. It would also be handy if his wife was on hand to hear the stories and add insight. Hard to let go of the glory days stories without support and without new memories being created. I would think that with 3 little ones he might be in a great place to update what he is saving from the past :)

Hello there. I would sell those food containers. Decanting just adds up work, also I would do it maybe once, twice, and then be done with it. In the end I used similar things only for pet food, which came in bag, to keep bugs away.

Try to sell them. Then, if they don't sell, consider using them to organize any space generally. Not only in the pantry. For instance, maybe some of them would be a perfect container as a pen cup or to hold your washi tapes.

Hey Karen, you pushing that box of photos was a work-out in its self, it’s a great idea to put the photos right by your work area. Also, Yes 🙌 to clearing the floor, it’s looking amazingly neat in that area now and it’s helping to create a clearer clam. Personally, If it was me I would swap out the chair by your furnace and put the shop vac and the vacuum cleaner (plus parts box) there instead; especially as your carpet cleaner is already in place. That way they are right opposite the stairs in a more centralised location. Regards the box of kitchen containers, I was watching one of your old pantry videos just the day before yesterday, when I needed a body doubling partner. You had decanted all your items and I thought WOW the pantry looked so amazingly streamlined back then and far more organised. My suggestion is that you might want to go back to trying that again. Yes, I know it takes time and is a bit like the washing-up, because it needs doing regularly, but it would really help you keep track of what you are purchasing and see clearly what’s being stored. Plus, it stops excessive stockpiling, as each shelf only has set spaces for your items. After all, the aim of a pantry isn’t just to store ‘any’ food items; rather it is the space to store the regular items you cook with the ‘most’. When you did your last pantry tidy, I thought some of those things would be so much better decanted, plus it’s far more hygienic than cardboard containers or plastic bags, when you have cat fluff or the possible risk of food mites, tiny spiders or beetles in a large cupboard where you often keep the door ajar. Anyway, obviously do what you think best suits your lifestyle. So, proud of you taking the time to go through that last bag of stuff. Don’t feel bad about the cheques, these things happen and we all put things off that maybe hard to go through (for you it’s paperwork and photos, for me it’s books).

You said in a previous video you're not much of a decanter. So if you use it for decanting, you might get a lot of work for one video, but that's probably not for lasting effect. And you probably knew that, since you were already on your way to decluttering it. So I vote for sell :)

I don't decant anything except for salt and pepper. Mind you, I haven't had the misfortune of dealing with weevils or pantry moths or other critters that can infest food. I know that decanting looks pretty but if it doesn't help you then it wouldn't be worth it to me. I definitely decant some items to make them easier to use; like plastic bags of beans or brown rice or popcorn I put in gallon jars with wide openings. I don't like how plastic bags slide around on a shelf. Anything I would use the entirety in a one meal (like a pound of boxed pasta) I'd never decant. They sit nicely on a shelf. I actually use large buckets for grains (wheats, oats, rye) so I don't have a need for flour containers. When I open coffee I put it in mason jars for freshness. Same with honey, I move it from a gallon jar to smaller mason jars for ease of use.
So, for me, the containers wouldn't serve a need besides "pretty" which is not nothing. I think that your open bins for single serving items are a good solution for keeping together like items so if it were me I'd stick with that. You've lived without the containers for awhile and didn't miss them :)
