I had just finished listening to them sumptuously performed by Arrau, with the warm and thoughtful phrasing that is proper to him; but the variety of tones, accents, dynamics that Benedetti Michelangeli instils in them is incomparable. In the Fourth Ballad he reaches moments in which a sorrowful yet dignified humanity spreads such a nostalgic echo as to leave us unutterably moved.
Being a pianist and a musician is not a profession. It is a philosophy, a conception of life that cannot be based on good intentions or natural talent. You must first of all have a spirit of sacrifice unimaginable. (ABM)
For Maurizio Pollini, who studied with ABM shortly after his own triumph in the 1960 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw, his teacher represented "the absolute peak of piano playing"... ☺️
