That's because the "while/when in your hand" requirement seems to activate both when the card gets drawn or while it's actually in your hand. My theory is that as soon as a card leaves your deck, unless discarded, it's considered to be in your hand and battlecries are known to cause confussion about the ordering of effects triggering

If you lose 2 times the same minion on your side and use diamond spellstone, it will summon both of them but because the chaingang is summoned as a copy it counts as 1.

Some explanation for the blood bloom + spellstone thing. Blood bloom does not deal you the damage, neither does the card you spell afterwards. It never DEALS you damage, you are just paying life to do so, and there is a distinct difference between the two, which is also a thing in MTG
Followup on chitterer: The spellstone is put into your hand BEFORE chitterer deals you damage, and as such it upgrades. It is practically the same interaction with OP AF CARD and the druid spellstone: the card already exists in your hand by the time you gain armor.
I don't think that's actually how it works, there is no "pay life" distinction in Hearthstone. Instead what Bloodbloom does is create a sort of enchantment on the player with the effect of allowing them to play a spell and then dealing damage equal to that spell's cost to them. It doesn't work with the spellstone because no card is dealing the damage, it's coming from an effect of an invisible thing created by a card. It does work with Floating Watcher because damage is damage in this game.
Why are you trying to explain it? Everyone could figure out why something happened, after we know what happened. Maybe not everyone get's it correct (I don't agree with what you said), but it doesn't matter. Because if something works like *this* or like *that*, and they both make the same outcome, why would it matter?

Note: I believe Jasper spellstone only gets upgraded from Ultimate infestations effect because Ultimate Infestations card text reads "draw 5 cards" before "gain 5 armor", therefore, you'd have already drawn jasper spellstone by the time you gain the armor.
That first interaction makes my budget big priest deck considerably better, since I use Violet Wurm as a budget threat to include in my deck (and not risking summoning lots of the 1/1s it summons is really good).
Another intresting interaction: Snipe + explosive runes. If you play a 2 health minion and activate first snipe, it will leave it at -2 health, then explosive runes will activate dealing 8 damage to your heroe
UI upgrades the spellstone since all its effects happen in sequence (periods, not "AND"s). The armor gain one comes after the card draw one, so by that point you already have the spellstone in hand. Same deal for the Tunneler.
One more thing about Jasper Spellstone - if you heropower as Druid with it in hand, your animation gets interrupted by the Spellstone changing it's text so the animation triggers twice - I wonder if opponent can see that. Also, Amethyst Spellstone was accidentally tested by Trump to upgrade upon you taking damage from Misdirected minion :D Last thing - if you kill something with UI, Corridor Creeper will get discounted if drawn that way
Lay on hands doesn't buff pally spellstone because it says draw AFTER it says heal. thats the same reason UI works, because the draw preceeds the armor in both text and action
Most of the draw interactions have to do with the ordering Hearthstone uses in resolving card effects. Notably, cards drawn as the result of a card's effect are considered to be in your hand before the card effect resolves (you see similar interactions in the way the mirror entity copies battlecry effects). This results in interesting edge cases then concerning card draw and scroll of wonders. Scroll of wonders resolves as the card is drawn and actually interrupts the initial card's effect. This results in two very noteworthy edge cases. One, Harrison Jones draws cards, gets bounced back to hand by Shadowstep off of scroll of wonders, and the targeted weapon stays on the battlefield. Two, multiple scrolls are drawn in the same turn and are able to target enemies that are already considered dead. Now, both of these also require knowledge of how Hearthstone resolves multiple effects on the same card (in a relatively arbitrary order) and when Hearthstone resolves minions with zero to negative health values (after the board state is clear of all active effects). This spellstone video and these interactions are all good examples of why something needs to be done about bringing clarity to the card stack in Hearthstone (and to bring back old Yogg... :P)

Well you couldn't really get an unstable evolution that started in your Mage deck.. so even if it s just an exact copy of the unstable evolution you previously cast and not a newly generated card it would still count towards quest.
Hey toast, just wanted you to know another weird interaction: if you play lay on hands and you draw pearl spellstone with it, it doesn't upgrade even if you restore 3+ health. Which is inconsistent when UI does upgrade the druid spellstone. I know healadin isn't a real deck but the mechanic should be the same.
I think the bloodbloom interaction with the spell stone is because bloodbloom sets up the next card to SPEND your life to cast the card, then the cards effect happens where you dont take damage from the casted card. Hence the interaction working as expected in the next example since you are taking damage because of the battlecry.
there is an interaction in kobolds and catacombs dungeon run. when you fight against wax master sturmi. when you play royal sidekick and wasmaxter uses her hp to copy sidekick sidekick will say "sry for my betrayal"
Interesting thing about that last clip is that even though you say it considers an upgraded spellstone to be the same card, if you *reduce the cost* of a spellstone and then upgrade it, it *loses those reductions* . This kinda suggests it's not the same card. You can see this when you use Mana Bind and get a spellstone and then upgrade it; the 0 cost will not stay.
Another cool interaction. If warlocks minion goes face into missdirection and damages warlock himself, spellstone gets buffed as it says "damage from your cards" interesting
A neat interaction I found via dungeon run is that the spells you get from shifting scroll DO NOT count towards quest progress which is I think is a bug personally
Shifter Zerus, Molten Blade, Shifting Scroll, and Shadow Reflection specifically are actually always treated as themselves in the hand, they use an enchantment effect to transform/cast when played. It's like how Druid of the X works, you're playing the original card and it becomes the new card before any resolution checks are made (though in the "random transform" cards' cases they update their costs accordingly).
I imagine for the quest, it only counts cards that have the "Generated by X" tag attached to them. Since a spellstone just cycles through forms in your hand, there's no reason for it to gain that tag, and as such it won't count toward the quest.
So when resummoning, two cards with the exact same art, name and effect, that only differ through their voicelines are considered as different. While when a card transforms in your hand, changing its effect, art and name, it remains the same. Well done Blizzard.
Well, that's because of how the card works. If one of the DoppleGangsters gets returned, it will summon the other 2 when played. Also, Freeze/Rando Mage doesn't need more help.
Each Doppelgangster is a separate minion card, so of course they're not counted as being the same for "different minion" effects. And Spellstones don't remove the previous version and add the new version to your hand when they upgrade, they use the transform mechanic and turn the previous version into the new version. Both sets of interactions are perfectly consistent.
Geomexis Yeah but the same goes for the two taunts in the video, which I forgot the name of, and they are counted as the same. You cant call that consistent, because of a voice line difference.
The 3 Doppelgangsters are different because they are coded as 3 different minions with 1 set of name stats and effects that match but different voice line sets to differentiate The 2 Saronite Chain gangs are the same because they are exactly the same (It's like casting the Shaman Spellstone on them) The Spell Stone changing is like you having a Corridor Creeper (7 mana 5/5 that costs 1 less for each minion that died while this is in your hand) and having its effect trigger:The card changes a number (and the Spellstones seem to have a line of code that also changes the name while still being seen as the same card by the game)
You forgot 1 interaction with lock spellstone => if you Attack Hunter that has missdirection And you hit your own face with your minion it upgrades the spellstone
Hey Toast I recently saw another Bug you might want to look at. If you Buff your Doppelgangster with Val´anyr, having Umbra on board, they only trigger the deathreattly once when summoned although it should be 3 times due to the wording "summon 2 copies". Even worse is that it works with Saronite Chain Gang which also says "summon a copy".

Hey Toast, I was wondering if you could do an interactions video that includes recruit. Here are the specific interactions I'm curious about (I don't have the legiondaries to check myself). Prince Keleseth interacting with Master Oakheart ,who looks for specific power when recruiting. (Will he recruit a normally 0 cost minion that now has 1 attack, and will he recruit a normally 3 attack minion that now has 4). Jungle Beasts/Barnabus interacting with the druid cards that "recruit 4 or less" (will they recruit cards whos cost has been lowered to 0, but are normally higher).
Hey Toast, I know you like doing videos on bugs in Hearthstone, so heres one that just happened to me. During an arena run, an opponent tried to silence a minion of mine that gained +2/+2 and divine shield from unidentified elixir. It lost the buff, but kept the divine shield. Hope you test it out yourself, love your content, have a good day.
Toast. The game is pretty odd when it comes to what it consider as a new card and what not. While the spellstones when upgraded are not considered new cards that didn't start in your deck by the mage quest, they will change in a way that it seems as if it would be in another case. If you gain one of these spellstones with a Mana Bind causing it to cost 0, when upgraded it will revert to its original cost as if it was a new card gained in hand. Also the reason why you do not upgrade the Amethyst with bloodbloom is because the damage comes from your "mana cost" rather from the card itself while Chittering deals damage from its battlecry just like Flame imp.
A thing that Trump apparently learned about Amethyst Spellstone; if your minion gets Misdirection'd by the hunter secret and the minion punches you in the face, the spellstone gets an upgrade.

About warlocks spellstone: if enemy have misdirection and because of it the minion you tried to attack with hits your face, the spellstone gets upgraded. Now, is it because it ia your card or your minion?
That isnt always your card. What if you used(somehow) potion of madness or sylvanas to take control of enemy minion? Then its enemy card. Or if enemy somehow got your minion and attacked your face?
I guess if you use Potion of Madness or similar cards, its considered your card as long as the effect calls for (PoM/SM until end of turn, MC/Sylvanas/Priest Minion I forgot the name of/... until end of game)

Theoretically: If you used the Rogue spell, Mimic Pod, and had some Deck of Wonders cards in deck and Draw one off the MP, would it make a copy of the DoW card or the cast spell? If the former, would it cast another random spell? Or the same spell as the prior DoW's?
When Eydis Darkbane is targeted with Velens Chosen and hits an Explosive Sheep with her passive that triggers its deathrattle twice from Baron Rivendare (killing Eydis) the player will permanently gain +1 spell power.
The logic is sound, but IMO we need counter-example (effect first, draw second) that doesn't work with spellstone to accurately decipher blizzard spaghetti code logic.
MajkaSrajka its not spaghetti logic. Its order of effects. Like Counter Spell and Flare. Flare says it gets rid of all secrets, but gets countered by Counter Spell because of wording. Idk if you play MTG but its effectively the same thing. It's the stack and ordering of triggers.
Here's another difference between Chain Gang and Doppelgangster: If you give the Val'anyr deathrattle to a Chain Gang in your hand and then play Umbra into Chain Gang, both copies' deathrattle will trigger. the warlock spellstone is so weird. It doesn't trigger through bloodbloom but when one of your own minions attack your face (because of misdirection for example) it does upgrade
If you play a minion with less than 4 health into snipe and explosive runes can explosive runes deal more than 6 damage to you, if you have bran in play and play injured blademaster into explosive runes can explosive runes deal more than 6 damage to you I have found that playing a 1 health minion into explosive runes against the lava chamber boss can get 7 damage dealt to face

Both Saronite Chain Gangs are the exact same card. There's no recognizable difference between the two whatsoever. However, the Doppelgangsters are all unique. They have different entries in the code for each of them, because they have different art/voice lines. As a result, the game sees all three of them as different cards, whereas both Saronites fall under the same code.
The point is: both cards (saronite and doppelgangster) share the exact same text, it's inconsistent that one works with the spellstone and the other doesn't.
it makes complete sense that the card would work like that in terms of game mechanics, but for the sake of normal players it should probably check if they have the same name and not if they are the exact same minion, just for consistency. However the card is not glitched or bugged and is working as it should, based on what's written on the card

With the mistress of mixtures test. What if you had 29/30hp and your opponent had 28/30 hp. Would the spellstone upgrade?

Does the Elixir of Hope on an enemy minion return the minion to your hand or to the opponent's hand?
I imagine for the quest, it only counts cards that have the "Generated by X" tag attached to them.
Since a spellstone just cycles through forms in your hand, there's no reason for it to gain that tag, and as such it won't count toward the quest.
Another kinda obvious one for ya Toast. Drawing the Amethyst spell stone using Kobold Librarian upgrades the drawn spell stone.
Shifting Scroll does not activate the Mage's Quest too, probably was just treated as the same card, similar to how the spellstone worked.
Bonus one: If you draw your amethyst spellstone with a Kobold Librarian is also gets upgraded (Like with jasper and ultimate infestation)
The amethyst spellstone also gets upgraded if you hit your face with your own mininion (misdirection).
Corridor Creeper also get cost reduced if you use UI on a minion and kill it then the UI draws you the Corridor Creeper
So when resummoning, two cards with the exact same art, name and effect, that only differ through their voicelines are considered as different.
While when a card transforms in your hand, changing its effect, art and name, it remains the same.

Well, that's because of how the card works. If one of the DoppleGangsters gets returned, it will summon the other 2 when played.
Also, Freeze/Rando Mage doesn't need more help.
Each Doppelgangster is a separate minion card, so of course they're not counted as being the same for "different minion" effects. And Spellstones don't remove the previous version and add the new version to your hand when they upgrade, they use the transform mechanic and turn the previous version into the new version.
Both sets of interactions are perfectly consistent.

The 3 Doppelgangsters are different because they are coded as 3 different minions with 1 set of name stats and effects that match but different voice line sets to differentiate
The 2 Saronite Chain gangs are the same because they are exactly the same (It's like casting the Shaman Spellstone on them)
The Spell Stone changing is like you having a Corridor Creeper (7 mana 5/5 that costs 1 less for each minion that died while this is in your hand) and having its effect trigger:The card changes a number (and the Spellstones seem to have a line of code that also changes the name while still being seen as the same card by the game)

You forgot 1 interaction with lock spellstone => if you Attack Hunter that has missdirection And you hit your own face with your minion it upgrades the spellstone
Hey Toast I recently saw another Bug you might want to look at. If you Buff your Doppelgangster with Val´anyr, having Umbra on board, they only trigger the deathreattly once when summoned although it should be 3 times due to the wording "summon 2 copies". Even worse is that it works with Saronite Chain Gang which also says "summon a copy".

Hi toast i have an interesting question and i hope you will read it. Question is: what if you have a cutpurse on board and it attacks your own face? With misdirection or something. Will it give you a coin? Because it says: whenever this attacks A hero. Not the enemy hero. I think this is a interesting thing to test. And i think you are the right person to test this 😁
If your minion's attack gets redirected to your face, it discounts the lock spellstone as well.

Hey Toast, I was wondering if you could do an interactions video that includes recruit. Here are the specific interactions I'm curious about (I don't have the legiondaries to check myself).
Prince Keleseth interacting with Master Oakheart ,who looks for specific power when recruiting. (Will he recruit a normally 0 cost minion that now has 1 attack, and will he recruit a normally 3 attack minion that now has 4).
Jungle Beasts/Barnabus interacting with the druid cards that "recruit 4 or less" (will they recruit cards whos cost has been lowered to 0, but are normally higher).
For warlock spellstone, your own minion hitting your face with misdirection will upgrade.
the amethyst spellstone also gets upgraded from the "Curse" card you obtain from your opponent
Don't forget the Amethyst spellstone and misdirection interaction.
Hey Toast, I know you like doing videos on bugs in Hearthstone, so heres one that just happened to me. During an arena run, an opponent tried to silence a minion of mine that gained +2/+2 and divine shield from unidentified elixir. It lost the buff, but kept the divine shield. Hope you test it out yourself, love your content, have a good day.
If you use dead man's hand with the warrior one, the copy in your deck keeps the upgrade
i can confirm that leyline manipulator, like the quest, does NOT consider upgraded spellstones to be different cards
Toast. The game is pretty odd when it comes to what it consider as a new card and what not. While the spellstones when upgraded are not considered new cards that didn't start in your deck by the mage quest, they will change in a way that it seems as if it would be in another case. If you gain one of these spellstones with a Mana Bind causing it to cost 0, when upgraded it will revert to its original cost as if it was a new card gained in hand.
Also the reason why you do not upgrade the Amethyst with bloodbloom is because the damage comes from your "mana cost" rather from the card itself while Chittering deals damage from its battlecry just like Flame imp.

A thing that Trump apparently learned about Amethyst Spellstone; if your minion gets Misdirection'd by the hunter secret and the minion punches you in the face, the spellstone gets an upgrade.

If you use a doble battlecry with Malkorok it will upgrade twice the spellstone (Lesser Mithril Spellstone)
For Paladin Spellstone you can grain 2 hp and than next turn 2 more you spellstone will upgrade
The mistress of mixtures and bloodbloom interactions with their spellstones definitely seem like bugs to me.
About warlocks spellstone: if enemy have misdirection and because of it the minion you tried to attack with hits your face, the spellstone gets upgraded. Now, is it because it ia your card or your minion?
It's your card either way that you took damage from so yes it works

That isnt always your card. What if you used(somehow) potion of madness or sylvanas to take control of enemy minion? Then its enemy card.
Or if enemy somehow got your minion and attacked your face?
I guess if you use Potion of Madness or similar cards, its considered your card as long as the effect calls for (PoM/SM until end of turn, MC/Sylvanas/Priest Minion I forgot the name of/... until end of game)

Theoretically: If you used the Rogue spell, Mimic Pod, and had some Deck of Wonders cards in deck and Draw one off the MP, would it make a copy of the DoW card or the cast spell? If the former, would it cast another random spell? Or the same spell as the prior DoW's?
When Eydis Darkbane is targeted with Velens Chosen and hits an Explosive Sheep with her passive that triggers its deathrattle twice from Baron Rivendare (killing Eydis) the player will permanently gain +1 spell power.

The reason why UI+SS works is wording. Damage, then Draw, then Armor, then 5/5. So you tech draw those 5 cards before you gain the armor.
Which is also why you can die to fatigue after using UI, despite gaining the 5 armor.
The logic is sound, but IMO we need counter-example (effect first, draw second) that doesn't work with spellstone to accurately decipher blizzard spaghetti code logic.
MajkaSrajka its not spaghetti logic. Its order of effects. Like Counter Spell and Flare. Flare says it gets rid of all secrets, but gets countered by Counter Spell because of wording. Idk if you play MTG but its effectively the same thing. It's the stack and ordering of triggers.

Here's another difference between Chain Gang and Doppelgangster:
If you give the Val'anyr deathrattle to a Chain Gang in your hand and then play Umbra into Chain Gang, both copies' deathrattle will trigger. If you do the same thing with Doppelgangster, only the original copy's deathrattle will trigger.

I know there haven't been any Inconsistency videos lately, but I just wanna put out, that when you play Spiritsinger Umbra into Doppelgangster with Val'anyr buff, the deathrattle only triggers once, while a buffed Saronite Chain Gang triggers twice, which is kinda sad. Get your shit together Blizzard!
I think the reason bloodbloom doesn't trigger amethyst spellstone is that you're paying a cost of health, not taking damage.

I discoverd a glitch when you have candle shot and the equep another weapon it looks like you are immune the whole game.
the warlock spellstone is so weird. It doesn't trigger through bloodbloom but when one of your own minions attack your face (because of misdirection for example) it does upgrade
i wonder if it also upgrades when mind controlled minion hits your face through misdirection
If a Warlock attacks into misdirection, and his minion hits his face, it upgrades his spellstone.
If you play a minion with less than 4 health into snipe and explosive runes can explosive runes deal more than 6 damage to you,
if you have bran in play and play injured blademaster into explosive runes can explosive runes deal more than 6 damage to you
I have found that playing a 1 health minion into explosive runes against the lava chamber boss can get 7 damage dealt to face

Haven't tested it, but shuld be Val'anyr, because the added deathrattle triggers after the original one. So essentially you are equipping ashbringer and then destroying it by equipping Val'anyr

Both Saronite Chain Gangs are the exact same card. There's no recognizable difference between the two whatsoever.
However, the Doppelgangsters are all unique. They have different entries in the code for each of them, because they have different art/voice lines. As a result, the game sees all three of them as different cards, whereas both Saronites fall under the same code.
The point is: both cards (saronite and doppelgangster) share the exact same text, it's inconsistent that one works with the spellstone and the other doesn't.

it makes complete sense that the card would work like that in terms of game mechanics, but for the sake of normal players it should probably check if they have the same name and not if they are the exact same minion, just for consistency. However the card is not glitched or bugged and is working as it should, based on what's written on the card
The logical Commenter It is just weird that Doppelgangster summons different Doppelgangsters. You would expect him to work just like Chain Gang. I don't understand the point if making them different.
