    Im 174 cm tall and fat so I can relate to the pain of knitting a ”man sized sweater”. My latest sweater I knit that flt perfectly used 12 skeins of 50g dk yarn. And now Im knitting a zipper sweater light for my boyfriend thats 193 cm tall and I had to buy 21 skeins. I think I wont be done with it until next christmas.

      I’m short but fat and I can I guess half relate to you 😭 it just takes so long especially if you want an oversized sweater

      I am also fat so I understand this entirely! I just knitted a cardigan with 1 strand Drops Brushed Alpaca and 1 strand Drops Daisy and I needed 11 skeins of the Brushed Alpaca and 15 of Daisy. Cost a fortune, took a century!

    I think "Danish Musings" on UA-cam has a knitting podcast where she steamed this yarn (or a similar one?) in a strainer over a saucepan and it made a big difference, it bloomed a lot.
    Edit: I found it, it's the "A knitting episode (12): some Nordic knits | 3 FO's + 2 WIP's (incl. Blouse No. 1 & Nola Cardigan)" at around 20 minutes

    Beautiful swatch, I love your colour selection! For future reference, you might want to have a look at Roxanne Richardson’s fake in the round swatch videos (both for colourwork and single colour swatches) how you can get swatches that lie flat without purling or cutting the yarn! It’s my go to since i found the method as my purl tension is quite different from my knit tension

    Im retired and decided to take up knitting. Florence, you gave me the confidence and guidance to persevere to knit my first sweater, the striped one, because your explanations were so concise and the visual was great! I've now started my second sweater with a simple cable in it 😃 except our dog chewed up my wooden cabling needle 🫢

    I found you channel by accident, and am delighted that I did. Your knowledge of yarns and how to adjust patterns, and seemingly, how to knit all of the many items you made, amazes me. Could you give your viewers a bit of bio re when and how you first learned to knit. Are there many wonderful knitters in your family? You are also a “ natural” when it comes to speaking on a video. Terrific👍

    I did the Zipper Man sweater in the aran weight which my husband wears in his frigid office all the time but oh that zipper installation almost killed me. I ended up using double sided tape to hold it together while I sewed it in and that worked pretty well but the bottom part of the zipper also feels wonky to me as well. He was thrilled so all in all, a great knit ;)

    Your DIY sock blocker made me want to share mine: if you have wire clothes hangers they’re great to form into blockers, you can also shape them for whatever size you need and you can hang them to dry, plus they might be a bit sturdier:)

    I love the jumper you are wearing! Would never have guessed it was knit in drops alaska.
    By the way I recently tried the Viking Garn Mohair (the kid-silk) which I bought on a trip to Sweden and it's hands down the softest mohair I have ever tried. They also have some amazing muted colors. I got a blue that is basically the same shade as the dusty dove blue from KFO. If you can get your hands on it you should try it :)

    Florence, I watched a reel this eek about steaming the cashmere yarn over a stock pot with a colander, then you have to hang it to dry, but the results are really visible. A very plump yarn. I think if you will use it for a garment you definitely need to steam it. If you will do the Sophie scarf no need. I have not use this yarn but I think it may bloom to stuffed up once knitted in a jumper. Happy New Year!! 🎉🎇

    This Knitting for Olive blouse (there's no way I can write the name, lol) is my dream, I would wear it so much. In merino it could be nice in spring or cooler summer days. It's on my Raverly queue, but it will be at least few months until I'll learn how to make something like this.
    You always have such beautiful yarn combinations, I mostly wear white, grey, purple and pink, but I like to see what you chose for which project.
    I think the mittens for your mum were my favourite thing from this episode, they are so pretty! But the jumper for your boyfriend had such a beautiful colour, I would gladly wear something in this yarn combination. Socks for your dad look so fun! I hope they all will be happy with their gifts.

    For swatching in the round, you can either 1. Make the yarn long enough that you don’t have to cut it or 2.on the even rows, spool about a piece of yarn approx 3x the width of your swatch, and use this length to knit in the usual right to left direction. Patty Lyons has a mini tutorial on Instagram about this

    Happy Holidays Florence! The mittens you made for your mom look beautiful and the colors you chose are perfect for that pattern. I also love the folded collar you did on your sweater no. 9. How did you make the folded collar for that sweater? I looked up the pattern and it has a regular high collar.

  • @JustWriter

    Hmmm...🤔 I'm guessing that the difference between the men's and ladies' versions of most sweaters has to do with making room for generous chests; so, there would be increases and gussets on either side and other techniques, before quickly decreasing for the underbust. But, this may not be an issue for most people, especially if one likes oversized sweaters. If one wants a close-fitting, tailored fit, then the patterns may really make a difference.
    PS: You are so blessed to live so close to wool yarn sources, that it's relatively low-priced. I live in California, in a city that is not close to any yarn guilds or manufacturers, so when I find affordable wool, I am overwhelmingly thankful.
    PPS: Please let us know if the pattern for the cardigan that is being tested will be out soon.

    For someone who was gifted a wealth of beautiful yarns by 'Valentina', you didn't give her much useful online love, Florence! I think you mentioned where she was associated one time - but so quickly that I didn't catch it and then I couldn't find it without re-watching the whole video. (You mention her several times but without connecting the dots) She's from My Ivory Room, right? In the Chiswick area of Greater London? I travel to the UK every couple of years and all my gallery-visiting is done, I relish a trek to a Distant Yarn Shop (DYS) so ... could you add a few details to your shout-outs. I wish someone were as generous with my knitting obsession as Valentina (whom I've never met!) is to yours. Just sayin'.... Er, I should mind manners now and thank you for your generous sharing of your time and talent in these videos. Pax.

    Biggest difference in men /women patterns is in the chest measurements. Women tops have more space in front to make space for breasts. It's the opposite for men tops/sweaters. You distribute the number of stitches the ways that you have more stitches for the back than for the front to cover the wider shoulders that men usually have. It makes garments more anatomically correct , hence better fitted)

    • @handmadebyflorence
      @handmadebyflorence  2 місяці тому

      Most of the patterns I knit don’t include this sort of shaping, as they’re quite oversized!

    • @susannamanucharian4399
      @susannamanucharian4399 2 місяці тому

      @@handmadebyflorence that is a good point, I just went with the most obvious answer without considering that 😅
      The way I was taught was what makes an oversized garment different from a garment of a just a bigger size is that in construction of oversized garments you still have to consider characteristics of different bodies ( size, male/female) to have better draped/fitted garment for each size. But I am not sure if it's the same in the west and whether western designers take this into consideration)
