    Welcome to Kent Tweedy! I especially liked that useless bench and your bib covering up a small part of your chest.
    If your ever want to come back and are looking for someone to walk with let me know.

    Dear Tweedy - having binge-watched all of your wonderful pub vlogs, I decided to ration myself to two a day of your Outdoors ones before commenting on them. I have given the thumbs-up to every one - and just want to thank you for them all; they are my favourite things on the whole of UA-cam. I so enjoy your wit, consideration for others and your ability to be enthusiastic without resorting to the dread words 'awesome' or 'cool'.

      Thank you for those extremely kind words Simon!
      Yes as you've spotted I'm really not a fan of the word "awesome"! There probably was a time and a place for it originally, but its rampant overuse has stripped it of all its meaning. That said we all have our bad linguistic habits, and I'm sure there are words I overuse!

      😂 Yea you don't get a lot of bib/napkin use on other outdoors channels! I was convinced given the combination of the bright red soup, the wind and the awkward seating arrangements that I was going to get it all over my shirt, but by some miracle it remained spotless.

    “A bench with a career behind it”. Oh John, your ability to describe shows no bounds.
    Self heating vegan friendly Chinese food on a muddy hike with some fine wine on a cold windswept hill 😮 …….. so enjoyable from beginning to end.
    I admire your determination to get out and about despite the mud. This spring we have been defeated by the incessant rain and muddy paths. Hoping that we have a dry spell and finally be able to walk without fear of near impassable paths 😢. Take care. 👍😀🍷
    Ps Happy birthday 🎉🍺

      Yes it does seem to have been a particularly severe winter for mud, it has been an added challenge to my last handful of outings... Yet still it comes as a fresh surprise to me every time! I have some gaiters which would have been very practical for keeping the mud off the tweed but I keep forgetting them.

    I have never heard of Deneholes before and I grew up in Kent! Every day's a school day on YewTube!
    Growing up in Kent in the 1970s, I lived through the time of mass hedgerow removals, and I suspect you were on - or close to - the land belonging to one particularly notorious farmer. I think his name was Hughie Batchelor and one of those 70s current affairs programmes featured him on the subject. Probably World in Action. Great theme music on that - an inspiration for the wholly inappropriate music that appears all too often on my own channel! You've also awoken long-buried memories of ghost stories from Hollingbourne, but they are of course, all mumbo jumbo!
    That little self-heating device is pretty nifty! Might have to invest in one of those. Perhaps when I revisit Kent - which you have inspired me to put on the list. Thank you for another great video!

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  8 місяців тому +3

      Thanks Mr WC21!
      Naturally when I was scanning the OS map for any points of interest on my route I wanted to find at least a barrow or two, but there weren't any (marked) anywhere near where I was walking. I figure anything in that olde world font is usually worth at least a quick look though! I hadn't heard of Deneholes either - but they have a wikipedia page it seems.
      When I was reading about that archaeological dig which unearthed the henge, it seems the same team had also found a fairly intact skeleton in a barrow in this area, which I believe wasn't marked on the OS map. So I suspect there may have been quite a few barrows around here at one time, and some unscrupulous farmers (perhaps the sort who might also remove hedgerows?) have probably ploughed them into oblivion over the years.
      I think the self heating hot pot was probably a one off for me (well actually a "two off" as my wife gave me a pair of them, the other being a spicier version) but it was a fun thing to try! In a way it did really simplify the provision of hot food as all I had to bring along was that plus and some water (oh and some cutlery). Not the usual gas stove / wind shield / sauce pan / bowls / cheese grater / giant pepper grinder / etc.

    I like the look of those little meal kits Tweedy. Very handy. Yesterday I had a simple army style MRE boil in the bag followed by a nice Macona coffee. Always nice to have a snack in the woods 🇬🇧 🇳🇿

      Thanks Dave! I've seen lots of outdoorsy videos where people review MREs / ration packs but this is the closest I've come to having anything like that myself. Probably a one off for me but I did quite like the simplicity of it - all I had to take along was that box (admittedly it was a bit bulky / heavy), some water and some cutlery.

      I wouldn't want to build too much anticipation - it's not my finest hour! I was accosted by a regular at my local pub last week who watches my videos, and he complained that the locations were getting a bit repetitive. He wanted to know why I always headed south or west out of London and never to the east (e.g. Kent or East Anglia). So partly because of that I thought I should give the North Downs another try. Somehow though, for me, it never seems to quite have that magic quality that landscapes like the South Downs or Ivinghoe Beacon or the area around Avebury have. That's the reason I keep going back to those places!

    • @hedleythorne
      @hedleythorne 8 місяців тому +2

      @@tweedyoutdoors Ah now we have all had that complaint once or twice about our work. Well be assured that feedback I have received is glowing for your videos. See it as 80/20 rule where 80 is the experience and 20 is the location. I know of one photographer that only ever photographs Glastonbury Tor, every day for the last decade. She is very popular and sells a lot of pictures so that kind of applies to videos too. Again, typing this at work so will watch later. My anticipation is very high and I am sure it's your finest hour!

    Hi John, Thanks for inviting us along on your birthday party!! I was most impressed with the cooker it seemed to build up steam almost at once. A great present from your wife!! Can you get refills of the heating element?
    Not quite sure about the ingredients though. I think on a cold and windy day like that as long as it was piping hot was the main thing.
    You've set me thinking now, just round the corner from my parents house is a cul de sac called dene hollow some investigation required I think. Even if you can't claim to have bagged a henge I think you should be awarded a badge for that holloway.
    I'm on the side of the well selected track of music for the sunset or even an intro and then just the view with no subtitles. Maybe Mr WC21 can help you with one of his online surveys?
    All the best!!

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  8 місяців тому +3

      Thanks David! Alas everything in that self heating hot pot was single use, that was one of its major downsides - it generated a lot of rubbish. It's definitely not something I would use on a regular basis but as a one off it was fun! There are also meat based versions of it, which might appeal more.
      I'm generally not a fan of overuse of music for an outdoors themed videos - I feel like the sounds of nature should be enough! The time lapses are tricky though because it presents a segment of video where no sound is recorded.

    Great video. I assume that the self heating component is caustic soda or something similar. You would think that they would mark it as very dangerous. They put labels 'do not eat this' on bicycles and scarves and all sorts of odd things but then they bung the dangerous stuff in with the food packs. I fear that there may be many people have tried to heat caustic soda hotpot with synthetic luncheon meat. As one who once mistakenly ate a table decoration in a Chinese restaurant, I feel qualified to raise this concern!

    • @tweedyoutdoors

      Thanks Liam! Yes I did find the chemical aspect of this a tad unnerving so this is probably a one off for me, although my wife gave me two of these, so I will have to use the other at some point... I think it might be calcium oxide rather than caustic soda (sodium hydroxide?) but I'm guessing they're both pretty caustic. I'm no chemist!

    • @EpicureanHikers

The camera work was not "terrible", the views were lovely, despite your generous use of the adjective "interesting" I feel I am unlikely to try one of those hotpots. I prefer the music to the captions for the simple reason that I can turn down the music, but cannot remove the captions. I am part of a project investigating chalk pits on Cranborne Chase so I really liked the dene holes thank you.

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Chris! I suspect subconsciously I was ramping up the use of puns in this video to try and cover for the fact I thought the location / subject matter might not be very exciting! I have been to the North Downs a couple of times before, and I don't know what it is but it never quite clicks for me as a landscape, in the way that. say, the South Downs does. It was pleasant towards the end of the walk though, and the sunset was an added bonus.
      I'll happily admit I had to Google for what a dene hole is when I saw it on the map! It is interesting that, if they were indeed just used for chalk or flint mining, they'd go to all that trouble to dig a shaft and then tunnels out from there when a broad, shallow pit would presumably have given you access to all the same minerals...? No doubt there is more to it than that though!

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  8 місяців тому

      Yes I agree, it's not something I'd want to use on a regular basis - I like the freedom and flexibility (and challenge!) of being able to cook whatever I feel like cooking outdoors, and with things like this hot pot that's all decided for you... Although I suppose I could in theory have substituted some of my own ingredients if I thought they'd actually cook properly via this method...? I'd had my eye out for wild garlic on my walk, thinking I could perhaps supplement the hot pot with a handful of that, but alas I didn't see any.

      I use them if the ground is dry due to extended heatwave and there is a risk of starting a fire. Usually early autumn when a warm meal would be welcome. I haven't been able to cook anything as such as they only warm stuff up. Military rations designed for them work reasonably well but if I try to heat a random shop bought meal the plastic usually melts. It gets a bit fiddly having to put food into roasting bags and such and dry food won't heat. Having said all of that they are an alternative to a thermos flask.
