    How do you safely dispose of the heating pack? Since it reacts to water I'm hesitant to just put it in general garbage and the packaging I have is in (I believe) japanese so it can't tell me how to can it. I've read in the comments that you haven't trashed it, but I would still like your opinion on how to dispose of it!

    • @xtineliu
      @xtineliu  3 роки тому

      Great question!! The product of the chemical reaction is calcium hydroxide, which when contained inside the bag can be disposed of safely without needing to worry about harming yourself or the environment. It is dangerous if people are exposed to large industrial quantities especially breathing it in, but a small block of it is fine, and it should not react any more with water to create heat if it's the chemical reaction you're worried about. I appreciate your concern for putting it in the garbage! Eventually I did throw it away because I had no idea what to do with it haha!

    • @RossPotts
      @RossPotts Рік тому +1

      MRE heaters are not the same. At first I thought they were too. They use a different chemical combo that can’t be reused. The ones on this video and what heaters you can get on Amazon are made from quicklime. The nice thing about quicklime is that apparently, you can heat it up to remove all the absorbed water, making it reusable.

  • @sophroniel
    @sophroniel 4 роки тому +4

    Is it safe? Also is that what happens with those wee hand warmers you boil to reuse?

    • @xtineliu
      @xtineliu  4 роки тому +3

      Yes it is safe if you follow the instructions! You wont be handling the pack of chemicals after you add water to the bottom chamber. I'm not sure if this would work to boil for reuse since these are a different chemical than reusable hand warmers which use sodium acetate and the chemical pack in this kit has a fabric outer wrap that is permeable to water. Basically since water causes the exothermic reaction, to reverse it we would need to keep it dry and add heat. Theoretically the reaction is possible to reverse but I have no idea what temp and for how long to add heat and if that would mess with the other chemicals added to the pack! I have to admit I still have the pack laying around haha! The reaction product CaOH is actually used to make corn tortillas but I wouldnt dare use this for food prep since I have no ideas about safety!

    Is there a way to reuse the calcium oxide packet after it becomes calcium hydroxide?

    • @xtineliu
      @xtineliu  4 роки тому +3

      I've not tried it yet, theoretically heat can make the chemical reaction reverse but there are additional additives in the packet - aluminum and sodium bicarbonate if I remember correctly. I am not sure if it is safe or even possible in a standard kitchen to reverse the reaction. But calcium hydroxide is an important ingredient in nixtamalization of corn, so maybe I could repurpose it for that! Granted, it is probably risky since the packet is not intended for reuse so I will probably just eventually throw it away...I did keep it for now just in case I found a purpose for it though haha!!
