I pushed my MAS puppy around in a pet stroller before she got vaccinated. It made socializing her so much easier. She's a squirmer and never wanted me to hold her for long while we were outside. I saw kayak on your places list! I almost bought one to do that bc I didn't think using the rental ones would be doable. Hopefully she will be fine with it next summer!
Hey Marissa. I’m awaiting the pick up of my 8 week old Aussie and your videos have been super helpful to me!! I hope to train her the same way, and that she learns as quickly as Freya! Wish me luck!
This Saturday my husband and I pick up our 8 week-old Mini Aussie, a red merle we're naming Piper Rue 💞 She'll be our first ever dog and we've been binging your channel to get ready for her!!
I have a Chihuahua and she usually goes to a farm with chickens horses sheep other dogs but it is still important to socalize the with different things like for example my dog is well adjusted with animals but the things she htes the most is balloons i wish i could socalize her more from when she was a puupy but she is alot better now
this was really helpful! thank you so much for this, I'll be getting my puppy on Wednesday and have been rewatching and looking at all newer info I can find about dog care ^^ Her name is actually also Freya convincingly enough and she's a silky terrier. I absolutely love watching your video with your dog and just any video you make in general their all so fun to watch ^^
I had a yellow lab growing up and lived on a farm ( we raised sheep) and my dog was so good with the " bottle lambs" ( which is essentially baby lambs who are rejected by their birth mothers for medical reasons - so then i have to feed them with a bottle and become their adaptive mother)..... anyways, the bottle lambs would always try to nurse off of our dog and she hated it but she tolerated because she knew if she ever snapped at my adopted sheep babies that she was going to be yelled at ( because my dog new that i was a momma bear over those lambs and i wasn't going to let get away with being abusive towards them/ be aggressive and she knew I would have yelled at her. But, anyways, some dogs do not belong with sheep and vise versa.
my parrents got a small dog last year and i spent a lot of time training her. She has always been very timid especially around other dogs, and since they live quite remotely i was very concerned about her socialisation. I tried taking her into town and we had some play dates with other puppies, but unfortunetly that was a poor decision because the puppies were too much for her and she over a period of time became more and more dog reactive. I just got a puppy of my own and shes actually also quite timid - definetly not as "bad", but I am concerned that i'll fuck something up one day as i did with the pther dog, but luckily i live less remotely than my parrents and have so many opotunities to properly socialise. socialisation definetly is the hardest and most time consuming part of having a young dog. I think its very nice, especially for new dog owners, to have a checklist and really preface the fact that EVERY interaction has to be positive. atm my pup gets most of her kibble out on walks just to really reinforce how great everything she meets is.
the checklist was definitely SUPER helpful for us because some things I never thought I would NEED to socialize my dog with, but in every case, I definitely should have!
I love the lists, thank you for sharing these tips! Being in an apartment, it’s definitely something we worry about as there are loads of dogs around so holding the pup sounds great. But how did you manage if they needed a wee and you’re outside with them?
if it HAD to happen, we tried taking them somewhere where dogs wouldn't go potty as often, not the grass right next to the door etc. and then I would wipe her paws and snoot with a little baby/doggy wipe thing to try and mitigate anything if we had to go potty while we were out! 🥰
@@MyDriftingDesk I'm wondering why.. maby because we don't have rabies anymore? Or maby because all the adult dogs here are vaccinated here in Switzerland.
I just got a new puppy! Her name is Ripley, and she is an 8 week old mini bernedoodle puppy! She is the cutest flipping thing… I might be biased but I don’t think so.
I have a 17 week old Australian Shepherd Red Tri named Zander. We love watching your videos and getting ideas for our pup. We live in the same city as you do. We haven't taken him to a dog park yet. Do you have one that you recommend?
We've taken Freya to few: Alum Creek Dog Park, Alum Creek Dog Beach, Heritage Trail Dog Park, Godown Dog Park, and Scioto Audubon Dog Park are our favs!
Not sure if you covered this, but how did you potty train when she was so young? I live in a condo and dogs are everywhere so I worry about disease, tips?
For potty training, it's HARD for sure!!! It's usually the longest thing it takes doggos to learn (that and crate training) so don't be discouraged!!! Here's what we did with Freya and what I would suggest you do (even though your pup isn't 8 weeks old anymore) but for 1 week take your dog potty every hour, on the hour. set up a routine (use a potty cue "let's go potty" or "do you need to go outside? etc., maybe use a potty bell, have him sit at the door, etc.) and then take him potty! when he does go potty where you want him to, while he's in the act make a HUGE deal about it!! praise clap, pet, and give treats make it so exciting and then go back inside. and do that every hour on the hour. Then in week 2 move it to every 2 hours. Then week 3 move to every 3 hours, etc. but since you've put in a routine (for us it's the potty bells) once you start elongating the time YOU take him potty, he might start asking to go potty instead which is what you want! Praise and treat that like crazy too! And also while/when they go potty where you want them to! Reinforced behaviors get repeated. So if going potty where YOU want him to gets him treats and is more exciting than going inside, he'll choose to go where you want him to and not inside because that doesn't get him treats and praise etc. I hope that makes sense!! It's a long and tedious process but if done correctly and consistency they learn SO quickly!!! Freya caught onto the bells by like day 3 and would ask to go potty at the end of week 1. We just kept going every week with moving up an hour also because she was itty bitty and couldn't hold her bladder for more that that time at that age lol so you can kinda mess with the numbers a bit since your dog is older, but the concept is the same!
Hi! Thank you for responding!! I actually don't have a puppy yet haha. So this is all still amazing information! I was also thinking of using real grass inside for the first few weeks while we get a routine. To make it easier to transition. I wonder if it'll be harder to transition if I let him have free access to the potty area in the playpen? That's my original idea, keep him in a playpen with toys and bed and stuff when I can't supervise. @@MyDriftingDesk

In Europe your puppy gets it shots at 8 and 12 weeks. And you go outside from the beginning.
interesting!!! there's about 3 rounds of shots for puppies here and they recommend not to go anywhere other dogs frequent until fully vaccinated!
