The new-generation Toyota Kluger is now available with a hybrid powertrain in Australia for the first time. The 184kW (246 hp) hybrid system gives the Kluger hybrid enough power while returning substantially better fuel economy in town than the other Kluger engine, which continues to be a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre petrol V6.
But do the hybrid fuel savings add up to make financial sense? Is the V6 the better engine? Should you consider a Mazda CX-9 or even a Kia Sorento PHEV?
Tested today is the base model Toyota Kluger Hybrid, the $54k GX eFour AWD.

I've just got my Kluger 2016 and I'm most pleased with it. Rather than being stuck with a 4cyl 1.8, I've got this one and I'm pretty proud to own it. I think for a 3.5L V6, the towing capacity is up there in the 2.5t range. It's well suited for me and lifestyle. Good work.

They should have stayed with the V6Hybrid !!! My 2010 Lexus RX450H does still very very good and runs smooth and comfy. The 4cylHybrid in such a heavy car is just overstressed most of the time !

Pretty fair and unbiased review, thank you. Looking to replace my 2009 v6 Rav4 with a hybrid for towing boat/camper As this model has a towbar fitted could we have some towing data please. Performance, fuel economy, petrol engine load.
The Palisade, Sante Fe, Kia and Mazda will all be ready for the scrap yard at 350 000km where the Toyota will easily do double and maybe even triple those kms. Thats the difference.
I don't think the Mazda will be visiting the scrapyard as well
The smaller infotainment screen makes sense on this model, but not on the Grande top spec, that thing costs nearly $80K : (

The price increases are just crazy. This car retails 64000 base model gx. I'll let that sync in.
That's definitely not worth 64k at all. It would be silly to pay that much for a base model Kluger with cloth manual seats and a small 8' screen with no satellite navigation and cheap feeling interior in places.

The new RAV4 and Kluger even in the base model trim get a ton of kit that you would only see in the higher trim levels of other brands.

@@neosoviet502 blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alerts, lane departure warning ect....
All features that are only available on the top trims of the cheaper vehicles but standard on the RAV4 and Kluger.
@@ryant2568 in terms of the safety yes it does come loaded but everything else it's lacking compared to its competitors and yet it's way more expensive than its competitors which is stupid.
No one talks about the spare tyre. Is that easy to remove it? How hard it is to undo it?

Where did you get roof racks? Toyota dealer told me, roof racks can be installed only on GXL/Grande, but not GX.
My dealer told me rhino rack and they supposedly clip inside the door jambs but they said they don't make them for the bare roof klugers. There are a few on ebay for the Highlander L and LE which is the same as our GX, the'rre a couple hundred bucks tempted to try them, although I can't see how they're supposed to screw into the car.

I love the fuel economy on kluger but feels like it lacks the taste & classy feature’s of its rivals ( cx9 & palisade ) I am confused 😕 which to buy

Wasn't the Kluger around long before Hyundai came out with the Highlander trim level? Makes no sense to me why its called Kluger, especially when it's called highlander in NZ.
Hyundai have used Highlander as a trim level in Australia since the 2001 Terracan Highlander. The Kluger only arrived on the scene in 2003. And, well, NZ is a separate country with a separate legal system and presumably separate intellectual property laws, so I guess it could be a different situation there. Or maybe Hyundai never used the Highlander name in NZ.

Probably true. Short supply and Toyota doesn’t constrain the dealers from doing it.
An interesting fact: Toyota is selling both Highlander and Kluger in China together.
Many car manufactures are doing the same thing like VW, Honda and Mazda.

Ur not wrong. I have one and it does feel below average when it's just one or two people but when it's filled with people, it's considerably underpowered and struggles.

Front parking sensors a default inclusions.,because we can’t see what’s in front of us but we can clearly see what’s behind with no sensors. Money grabbing tactics
@@SirGregory front and rear sensors should be a standard feature for all vehicles these days. It’s marginal cost to manufacturers.

@@chasingcars Thanks! Also, not a criticism as such, but please include Kodiaq in all of your comparisons in this price range when you mention SUVs with 7 seats. As is, all motoring journos always only compare those cars with the usual suspects (CX9, Sorrento, etc) but rarely mention Skoda or even Peugeot 5008. Thanks again, and keep up the good work!
