The more I see these modern cars that you test, the more I appreciate the older ones in the garage.
Totally agree with you

First we get 2 liters, now we get 2 tons. Come on AMG, get yourself together.
This comment is everything 😂😂
Don’t forget 2 hundred thousand
Should it also be mentioned it is over 370 kilos/800 pounds heavier than the last GT. WTF AMG!?!
And is made mostly from aluminium!!!😮
A sign of the times sadly... They're never gonna make 'em like they used to.
It's 300 kilos heavier so they can pat themselves on the back for trimming 200 kilos from the Black Edition and charge double the price.
nav its a new platform and just bigger - you have the backseats and way more space, thats enough to add the weight. Do we want it? The other GT´s in the same class are not lighter.
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 I've always wondered why people desire these sporting cars to have crap backseats. They must do since AMG has seen fit to give this car them. To me they are pointless.
@@maggotpudding I can see the appeal, the car is more spacious more flexible overall for daily use - I always liked that with my 911 - but the price of weight is too high.
If it's like the SL these backseats are entirely useless excepting toddlers@@bavariancarenthusiast2722
@@maggotpudding 4 seats are optional tho
After a drive in my analogue R129 SL this afternoon and then seeing this interior I can only conclude that I’m a lucky man.
I also have an R129 500 but with almost half the time to 60 and rail like handling , I’ll go with the iPad . That’s if I could afford it!
Just give me the good old smiths dials of speedo & rev counter, and temperature control by nice rotary switch, bobs your uncle, what nonsense that tablet is ,,,
@@stephenmerrifield3991 smiths? R129 has the classic "VDO" instruments
Analogue clocks with needles and proper buttons and switches are the new luxury. Screens are just a cheap solution.
True. Screens are just made to save money. Makes sense since Tesla invented this trend, the brand that took costs savings and halfassed cars to a new level.
Very true
@@origaminefretami3480 When it was used on the original Model S it was definitely a luxury and novelty that cost more to produce. The Model 3 proved to the rest of the industry that everything can be on one display. Which is fine for basic commuter cars if it gets the cost down for people.
Don't blame them. Blame the companies who starting doing it in cars like this.
@@MrCarGuy Novelty, yes, but it was insanely cheap on the first Model S already. It was just integrated, which made it look better. Now, Tesla literally just glues the screen onto the dashboard, which looks hilariously cheap. And like every industry, when one company or product sells well, everyone else copies it. Especially if it saves them money like this
@@origaminefretami3480 They've saved money on the Roadster by simply not building it.
Wonder if the people who put a deposit down ever got a refund; that was a $250M interest-free loan for Tesla.
Drug dealers and footballers will love his new model.
Indeed, see my comments on the cracks and bangs; hooligans.
Don't forget "influencer" wannabees.
It’ll sell like crazy
To be fair they bought the previous one as well
No, they won't actually like the car itself. They'll like *_telling other people_* they own one.
God, that big ass iPad is appalling.
😂
That’s not an iPad , but I get it
An attempt to win over the Tesla buyer.
@@trails3597it’s also just a massive cost cutting measure…compared to making physical buttons and switches, putting a screen to control everything is much cheaper for them.
it's a telly vision , smart type, awesome for crashes
Now just another overweight FR grand tourer. The original AMG GT carried on a lineage from the SLS of a front mid engined supercar.
This is just a hardtop SL now.
As a die hard AMG fan, I'd definitely take the new AM Vantage over this.
Actually for the previous GT, AMG used the same platform from the SLS but slightly revised and with a new engine installed, in this way they were recouping the money spent on the development of the SLS platform. Therefore, the GT (not a sedan) was an opportunity to buy an SLS supercar with different body panels for half the price. But this one is more like an S63 coupe used to be.
Just the dash layout alone on the AM makes up for the Tesla like layout in this AMG.
@@coolguy_2997Yeah, from supercar to GT, not even a sportscar.
I believe the SL is more like a AMG GT cab now, and not the AMG GT being a SL hardtop. I just drove the SL 63, and it is very much hardcore. Not very SL, I have not driven the SL 55 but if I remember correctly that has a more relaxed suspension setup.
100% the truth!! I feel EXACTLY the same way, this car is not the previous car at all. Sucks. MB has lost their marbles again.
Remember when we were kids and we were excited by modern cars?
There are some cars that I find exciting today, but nothing compared to what has come and gone. Today cars are getting too wide, too heavy with all the extra safety equipment they have to have on board, then you have the push to electric. I just hope someone comes out with a way to keep the ice engine, with zero carbon emissions.
Todays new cars are appealling to a new generation and we must face the fact that we are old! It's just strange because the typical buyer for an expensive car like this is probably older
More to do with being a kid than the cars. I used to want a honda civic SI as a kid because it had stickers on the side.
@@SavedbyHim inheritance in europe and usa is around the corner now and lease / finance the no. 1 option. Young generation beginning to spend the money of the family. Have never seen so many young people driving expensive cars than these days. Nobody with a functioning brain cell buys these cars though
@@wackrapsatire Yeah I think a lot of the young people driving expensive cars are servicing very large monthly payments, either lease or finance - & I think there a multiple reasons for this - some of it is down to cars just being consumable items now that won't last much past the warranty - so you can't buy a 10 year old car and expect it not to cost you a fortune in repairs anyway - and part of it is the Social Media generation who see all the influencers driving the latest flashest thing, so feel like they are a failure if they can't emulate it.
Harry Metcalfe - the only car-youtuber who inspects the vehicle with a magnet.
I understand them trying to compete against the 911 for the rear seats, but the overall long hood shape was what made the previous gen so attractive.
When it comes to interiors it looks like Mercedes has lost the plot
??? How what do you prefer
True. Too much bling (option?). The big screen is horrible, and the controles and the dashboard are not enough centered around the driver. Looks moore lackluster then it looks AMG.
If not most of today's manufacturers.
this still looks really good compared to others
Screen looks bad, but at least it's big enough so it's easy to use.
The rest looks good though, not sure what's your issue with it.
Nice to see the Clio 182 Trophy still in the garage, I feared that had been moved on
I would love one 😍
Would love to see a new review of that
The touch screen must account for 150kg.
😂😂
I’m with you Aston every time
The Mercedes script on the windscreen is like a Halfords special, and the iPad type screen looks like an afterthought. Great review as usual.
That etching on the windscreen is the original first Mercedes logo after the name change in 1900 (thus the old fashioned font). It is plastered on the wall of the Medercedes Museum in Stuttgart as well.
Range anxiety!😂
It sucks because for a while some Mercedes came on the windshield with Carl Benz's signature on the glass. It looked great compared to this one.
halfords marketing masquerading as a comment hehe
I’m a sucker for AMGs since I got my W205 C63. The 4.0TT V8 is an incredible engine and capable of a lot more than it’s kicking out here. There will inevitably be a black version with >800bhp just by a remap & 200kg less by removing the rear seats and some kit and a price of £250k.
100% agree that the trend of dumping a screen in the middle of an otherwise traditional dashboard is the height of laziness / build to cost solution.
Mechanically it's a huge step back from the previous AMG GT. This is basically and SL with a fixed roof.
That's exactly what it is, since it's literally built on the sl platform, which is also built off the e class platform, this car is not worthy to be called a successor
@@chiefdenis Agree 💯 and, in light of this, the price tag is not justified.
yep
It’s faster even though it’s heavier lol
@@kraenk12 it’s true, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better or more fun.
345kg more than the new Porsche 992.2 GTS
Which carries a battery and electric motors
Honestly, that’s a fail for both of them.
It's just an SL, you tell by the styling alone. RIP AMG GT.
I’m nostalgic for the days when we used to look at the road
You don't have to look at the road very soon haha
That screen is an utter monstrosity, why oh why. Need better range, 200+ miles for a “GT” is just silly. Glorious drivetrain.
It seems that instead of bringing the range of EV's up to their ICE counterparts they are going lower the range of ICE cars to that of EV's.
The "Hot-v" is mostly done to reduce emissions, not packaging and throttle response. Unfortunately also reduces reliability substantially, like most emissions related engineering does.
Everything through a touch screen! I'm out!
Were you even "in" in the first place? I suspect not ;)
@@sq1rlsqu4dWho cares if he's "in". Screens don't fit in a 165 000 GBP car. They make it look cheap on the inside. Take a look at LC500. It's a luxury item, Mercedes isn't.
I heard it somewhere that the presenter said about a car (irrelevant wihch one) that had buttons and knobs: "...made by real people for real people, not IT geeks for IT geeks who unable to live without touching a screen..."
@@Limpi43 If you have to take your eyes off the road to operate it, then it is dangerous and should be marked down on NCAP.
@@WeAreAllDoomed-n5i Agreed. I hate that the officials use double standards: you can't use your phone at eye level, but you can use the touch screen at chest level. SMH
Those screens are a deal breaker.
Cancelled your order, have you?
@@sq1rlsqu4d Yes, I did. In 2020. $70K Dealer Mark-up and who knows how long a wait on top of registering it in California. What about you? Doesn't look like you drive.
Still waiting on that c63 review 😂😂😂
It's gonna be a classic like the i5 M60 review, can't wait for it 😂😂
😂 when they bring the V8 back
I'm convinced he did one already, but was so disappointed he decided to not release it to maintain his relationship with AMG
It’s still searching for its missing 4 cilinders.
19:44 ‘don’t mention the C63 4 cylinder hybrid thing, what did they do that for…’ 💀
Great car!
Just 3 negatives:
1.) Interior designers don’t even try anymore
2.) Electronics doing everything, makes it impossible to repair in the future
3.) Nearly 2 tons is a ridiculous number for a sportscar
Cars are more and more becoming non-reparable throwaway products (especially EV).
Great, entertaining video as always!
Best wishes
The price of this Mercedes is not far off the cost of an Aston Martin Vantage which in my view is far better looking car !
I'll take this thanks. Hands down.
Yes, but not 4x4
Just listen to yourself.
eh not anymore its not😭
My UA-cam car obsession journey started many years ago with you Harry and has since grown to include Ian Tyrrell, Jack with Number 27, Classics World, Big Car, Twin Cam, Jonny Smith and TLBS, Tiff Needell, DRIVETRIBE, Jodie Kidd and Kidd in a Sweet Shop, Jason Camissa with Hagerty, Derek Tam Scott and BTSw/DTS ISSIMI, Car Wizard, Hoovies Garage, Doug DeMuro and of course Jay Leno's Garage. There are many more I could list but it really started with you. You're part of my Sunday routine now and I get antsy when I haven't seen anything from you (and all of the others) THANK YOU!
Jay Emm would be devastated to see this
Imagine paying that much for a car and then you get an interior as bad as that 😂🤮
Cars at less than a quarter the price manage to mould the dash and embed the screen into it. The afterthought stuck on look was bad 15 years ago, it should have been consigned to history by now.
Correction: this thing does NOT go racing and probably never will.
The predecessor AMG GT is still the thing to go for GT2, GT3, GT4 racing lol.
They are still building the old GT for racing indeed
I hope it stays like that, i don't want to see this thing in gt3
And in that they have the even older 6.3 na engine
@@NMT1995 Indeed. Bulletproof engine for racing.
This will come to GT3 in the future. Mercedes will not want to be racing a model that can no longer be purchased in showrooms
The exterior sounding quiet is, because it is. They use speaker sounds for the interior, which to me was always a big no.
The previous GT coupes were / are masterpieces IMO.
It'd be nice to have a review of the GT S / C / R, maybe even the black series, but that's just unobtainium.
Was thinking the same. At least from the video it seems like most of the sound is pumped in from somewhere digitally. Exhaust-note was a different sound altogether.
@@FinnishCarGuys Yes unfortunately, it is for sure. It's been like that with every AMG from 2018.
So, Merc has abandoned its glorious front-mid-engined plus transaxle chassis and produced an SL in drag.
Presumably, the bean-counters also dictated the bleak iPad cabin and cock-eyed UI?
The epitome of ‘the old car was better’ - and a very tempting used bargain.
NEW VIDEO FROM HARRY ON A SUNDAY
stop shoutin bear man
I fear most consumers are fine with the digital experience, but most enthusiasts are wanting more of an analog experience.
Fun fact, the AMG GT GT3 factory race cars still use the good old 6.2 💪💪💪💪
That Mercedes font on the glass is the original Mercedes logo from the 1900's
It sounds completely false/synthesised from in the cabin - on my TV at least. I assume it sounds more authentic in person?
Given how the inside sound changed instantly when Harry switched through different modes, one has to assume the inside sound is heavily augmented with synthetic engine sounds.
@@joergfitzner I'd want to turn that off I think.
Surprised there was even room for seats with that 65 inch tv.
Sorry Harry, but I much prefer the older classics. Manufacturers are producing so many ridiculously powerful cars stuffed with highly advanced electronics. I just can’t relate to them and would never buy one even though I could (just about!).
That touchscreen is probably 300kgs. 😂
😅😅😅😅😅😅
So bottom line: like every new Mercedes these days, too expensive for what it delivers. I've analyzed the price vs value of each new AMG that's been released and, almost like clockwork, each one is 30% too expensive for what it delivers. Thanks for corroborating Harry!
Used to be an AMG fan boy, I still have a SLK55, and I used to have a brand new C63……….but I just don’t have the money to buy an AMG any more. If I did have the money I wouldn’t bother with AMG I’d rather have an AMG powered Aston Martin
I love how this humble man says « well welcome to a new Harry’s garage ». Your reviews are great and we thank you!!
A GT with only 200 mile range is anti-GTish.
I loved my 2016 GTS. The spirit is still here with the drivetrain. It appears that everyone at MB got what they wanted here. Tech department with four screens, drivetrain department got their power plant, market research got their 911 competitor and back seats, finance got their profit margins, exterior designers got their wishes. The consumer gets an overweight expensive car that isn’t great at anything, but good at a lot of things. In 2027 people will be first in line to pay 45% off.
Another fantastic video Harry, 👍🏽
Let's summarize:
- They added 350 Kg (770lb), that's an absurd amount of added weight
- They ditched the transaxle design
- They ditched the dry sump system
- They ditched front-mid-engine layout
- They ditched Rear Wheel Drive
- They ditched hydraulic steering
- They took the SL chassis and the 2+2 seat layout which makes this essentially an SL, especially in roadster form (I'm assuming this will come out at some point).
- But hey, it now has a big iPad center screen 😀oh dear.
Yet it goes 0-60 in 2.7 seconds.
@@brentparker9527 if you only care about straight line speed and things like cornering performance and an engaging experience aren‘t a priority for you I suggest you buy an EV. They‘ll do 2.7 seconds as well. 👌
@@sveeny can you prove to me that the handling on this is subpar? I’ve test drove one and there wasn’t any issue. I suggest you watch remove before race and his take on the handling
@@brentparker9527 I‘ll give the review a shot. It‘s certainly a nice car and maybe even more true to the „GT“ name tag I just think it‘s shocking how many things they removed. Cutting all those corners leaves a sour taste from a company that just came out with s 4 cylinder C63. The old AMG GT was a true stand alone sports car while this feels like (it pretty much is) a rebadged SL.
The ipad just ruins the entire car sadly
Bugatti and Pagani giving a class on how interiors should be
I can't help but missing how beautiful all the switches and buttons used to be in car interiors now that every manufacturer uses touch screens. I mean they even used to engineer all buttons to have a pleasant clicking noise and feel when you pressed them, while every touch screen feels and looks the same, even like the ones used in fast food chains for placing orders!
This new GT seems more of a rival for the Bentley Continental GT than a 911 Turbo S.
It’s lovely seeing cars you can’t afford. But I’m afraid that’s also a car I wouldn’t want.
Why? It’s practically the perfect grand tourer
Harry, I own an SL63 Bi Turbo 5.5 Performance Edition, which weighs 1845 Kg,Glass Folding Roof & all. It has 565 BHP with it's 5.5 L Bi turbo, which makes it a very quick GT car AND a Convertible. GT 63 Weighs 1970 Kg with the petit 4.0 Litre Bi Turbo. The GT 63 also has AWD. We have near Zero Snow in Australia,so AWD is an affectation, but a negative in that it incurs Understeer,an unfortunate side effect. All in all, I won't even entertain buying an AMG GT 63,especially at the price quoted. I'll stick to my 18,000 mile SL63,and enjoy the Aussie Sunshine.
Its that time yall!!! Harrys on Sunday!!! Yay!
4343lbs is insane.
I'll stick to my 2500lb B16a EK.
This move by Merc is so disappointing. The previous GT was a front-mid engine, transaxle, RWD sports car that could compete with the 911 every step of the way. The GTS won awards for best drivers car. The GT black series broke many track records. This however has become a grand tourer, and gained so much size and weight. The old GTS was 1618kg. This is 1974kg, which is possibly heavier than the old BMW M5, with less power and with worst weight distribution. The last AMG GTR had 585hp and weighed 1630kg, and literally beat a 660hp Ferrari 488 around the track.
I definitely agree with you Harry, I hate these screens on the new cars.
stick shift, light, vibration, noise, visceral, non turbo, beautiful, no screens, analog dials, you dont exist WHY NOT!!!
Had a courtesy c class last week, as my mercedes was in the garage and what happened.... The centre screen didn't switch on and I was unable to adjust the temperature in the car. 25 degrees outside and 30 degrees plus inside. Get rid of the screens. I gave the loan car back 😂

Hey Harry! Love watching your videos! Would you consider making one about your watches?
Give me a break with the giant iPad thing.
You can't even see out the window.
They should make a non-driving living room version where you can simulate driving on the iPad.
Who cares about "driving" in any case ?
If I'm shelling out 100k+ for a car, the entertainment center better be integrated into the damn dash!
Loved the video. None of the options needed like another German brand! Love the car and great look. Well done M-B.👍
Aston all day long arry !❤
One thing not to forget is that Mercedes makes a really solid machine. Not inexpensive to maintain, but neither are horses, houses, and ex-wives.
"If it flies, floats, or F***s, rent it". I have fastidiously avoided the first two, while I have broken the rule on the third, quite lucky to have found a keeper. I expect to keep the AMG S63 Cab for quite a few years too (maybe til death do us part, my death). I love real buttons, no piano black plastic, amazing seats, Burmeister High End, and... oh yes, that 5.5L V8: so sweet and such smooth quiet torque until you drop down a gear or two in Sport mode. Then you punch it and things happen quickly: acceleration, quick shifts, barking exhaust and a huge grin on my face!
@@eastbaystreet1242 ---- You managed to keep it down to a huge grin?? I do not understand the coupe club! Top down is the only way to go. Congrats! I'm happy with my M276, and thank goodness for traction control. I saw some video drivers having a bit of trouble keeping an M176 in the right lane. Thing that puzzles me is the new friends I have. For a while it was a bit depressing, that people thought more of a car than of me, then it struck me that maybe people love winners, so to speak - a bit of color and flair showing - in moderation, of course! For some reason Harry sharing my AMG i mode preference has made my day
The only part I like on the interiors of modern Mercs are the turbine-like looking air-vents…that’s it! The rest is video arcade chintz 😒 oh and that central LCD is going to date this interior so much, down the line. And all those hundreds of kilos of extra weight and front-biased weight distribution is a step backwards compared to the previous gen too. Quite good looking on the outside though, for a modern Merc jelly mould. Actually reminds me a bit of the original Sierra 😬
A lovely looking car. Probably one of the best looking cars out there but the price. Damn
Prices are just skyrocketing man. Wish these things were more obtainable and that I would see plenty on the road. So good looking
Would love to see you review the new Maserati Granturismo. See how it compares to this
Having recently driven your test route, I can’t believe how bumpy the road surfaces were..no wonder you keep most vehicles in the comfort setting for suspension. Maybe have a dash up the A429 from Morton for a change !
It’s not awkwardly long hood like the last one. I don’t like the iPad at all. It would be great with normal switchgear and maybe some analog style gauges.
There is nothing awkward about the long hood, it's beautiful and classic GT style. All iconic GT cars with big engines in the front used to have and and most are just beautiful. Not awkward..
100% agree on the interior, makes it look generic and cheap. That hard to reach start button is comical.
It’s almost as heavy as an S class coupe. Hopefully AMG will make a new GTR or Black Series version that’s lighter and more track focused.
Can't wait for the vantage review
Watch that mic distortion!

It’s lovely - but £165k?

I thought I had seen everything. But then I saw that screen.
Honestly, heavier, phatter asp! Looks wise; the older amg gt's ,gts, gtc, gt r, better looking. Prefer the Classic long hood, older had nicer interior too. Change for the sake of change and seems like incremental improvements; perhaps. And did he say 300kg heavier!!? Deal breaker! i'll take my imaginary 200k elsewhere haha!
Kind of sad sad how the AMG GT63 4 door from the previous generation is gone and almost forgotten, great package that was.

Seems like they've substituted a large fuel for +2 seats and large boot, which I think is a mistake, 200ish mile range is just not good enough, think they ought to offer a 2 seat option with longer range fuel tank, also I agree about the interior, could have been so much classier
yeah, higher fuel consumption rate and at the same time smaller tank is simply unusable - and a slap in the face of unsuspecting customers
AWD, extra heavy (+300kg?!?) and then the 8% shift of weight balance to the front... Oh and for more money.

I don't get the point of these vehicles anymore. It has lost any chance of being considered a "sports" car. 😞
A big touchscreen, 300 kg extra and a more front-biased weight distribution. That's what we have asked for!
I'd like a video about your watch collection!
I own a 2016 AMG GTS and love it. How could existing owners want to trade in on this model that has lost everything that's great about the previous model. Clearly redesigned for the US market given the TV screen and the upsizing.
Looks a lovely car, that big screen in the centre of the dashboard puts you off
Great to see you back in a Merc again Harry, your trip to the Lake District in the SLR is one of my all time favourites but I’m afraid they’ve ruined the AMG GT in exactly the same way that they ruined the SL, such a shame.
Harry, this is only your fourth video featuring a Mercedes for the last 3 years. Compare that to 18 with BMWs for the same period. Why?
The subtle external styling changes have made what previously looked like a 'big and brutish' German machine into a very elegant and beautiful motorcar indeed.
They just kept watering it down since the sls amg. this is a pretend 911 now.
Back in 1980, you sat in the car, turned the key and drove away.
Now, even trying to find your fav destinations on a Merc satnav means the whole process lasts 10 minutes
This is going to be a maintenance nightmare in a few years
TrueEspecially with those screens 😂
especially if you consider how dealers handle maintenance these days. But then again most are on lease anyway
That applies pretty much to all Mercs, especially the expensive ones.
No more than any other car in that class
Would love to see a supertest between this, the Aston, the Porsche 992.2 C4S, a Ferrari Roma and a McLaren Artura given the money involved for one of those. Great cars being released at the moment and glad to see that the ICE is the focus of them all. Bravo indeed.
