Cleanest Arcade 1-UP/Raspberry Pi build I've seen so far!! Well done!! The only things I would change/do, would be to change out the factory speakers for anything better. Mainly since I've heard they blow very easily. I would get and wire up a an outlet for the back so that the plug for power looks cleaner than just a power strip cord sticking through a hole. And lastly customize the Pi's image theme to look just like an Arcade 1-Up theme. But all of these are just nit picks and somethings I would do. Either way, looks amazing and still looks factory!! Very few of these tutorials out there.. Mad props!!
You did a great job. That Street Fighter bezel was distracting me though, lol. I enjoyed your build. This is one of the better TMNT Arcade 1Up mods I've seen. Keep up the good work.
The ‘protective coating’ you removed is plexiglass that is supposed to be there to stop you rubbing the paint off (which will happen if you play it a lot). Its got two pieces of plastic cling on it to stop it getting scratched in transit.

I am so excited to do this! I got my cabinet recently and just need to get the parts to start modding. However, I'm seeing mixed things about the LCD controller board working with the TMNT cabinet. Perhaps some have a newer monitor? Can you confirm what model number was on your TMNT board? Mine says 7633 V01a. Perhaps I can send you a pic and you can confirm the LCD board will work? Bob Bock Hey Bob, I don’t have the board on me it’s actually at my shop. However, I know it was the stock for that came with the cabinet which she did purchase back in October. I would assume that it’s pretty close to the latest revision. I did also notice that you have to make minor adjustments in the settings of the LCD screen as well as retro pie.
@@AlternateArmsSD If anything, I get the board and return it if it doesn't work. I can always use a Firestick or something to make sure it works before modding completely. At least taking off the back panel and the TMNT/LCD board is SUPER simple and something I can do in 10 minutes. If you're able to confirm it would be appreciated, but there's no rush! I appreciate the response and again thanks for the video!
Awesome video so far! I got everything I need and just pulled the controller board and I still am puzzled! Why do I have to flip the on/off switch if it is correct on my NBA Jams arcade 1UP? Also can you please let me know the correct wiring for the single one player USB as I ordered everything you mentioned but, did not get the two player outputs only single player so four boards?
Hello and thanks for watching! You don't need to flip that switch for the NBA jams. It's actually in the correct position. As far as the wiring for the USB encoders, yes indeed one decoder per controller. The USB in coders that I had originally purchased that would put 2 sticks on 1 controller were flaky at best. So definitely use one encoder board per controller. It doesn't matter how you wire them as long as they are all the same ( And even that is not all that important. You can figure all this in retropie anyway). Have fun!
Jon quick question... I wired all buttons the same however the joystick board when i goto test it does not work???? again I created 2 pin wires for the joysticks so that four, and their are four mode, turbo, etc 2 pin following. Why wont the board recognize when configuring on emulation? this is my set up
Just did this project today and it was fun but a huge pain in the butt. I chose to keep the stock joysticks so I had to literally solder every wire to the a connector and then attach it to the USB encoder boards. The stock joysticks don't have a traditional five pin connector slot like the aftermarket ones.
Very nice! I was able to use male to female jumpers to create a "solderless" connection between the "stock" joystick and the USB encoder boards. The stock ones would work but the connection was very tight and I didn't want to risk them popping off. I'm thinking that, in the future, I'm going to swap out the entire button and joystick assembly to a much for advanced set. The stock equipment is "acceptable" but I'm not sure on the longevity of the stock parts. They are definitely not up to a "lifetime of play". There are a lot of other variables I explored but in the interest of keeping the costs down I stuck with the stock equipment where possible. I think on the next conversion, Ill upgrade everything. (Including possibly the screen itself) Thanks for watching!
Its not overly complicated if you've worked with retropi. Its just a step by step process. After you download the roms (Where ever you get them) and load retropi, You simply put the raspberry on the local network and access the files structures through the network and drop the roms into their respective directories. (That sounds more complicated that it actually is).. If I get enough interest, I may do an entire video showing how to setup retropi and adding images. Its a tad geeky though which is why I haven't as of now. :)

Therefore it doesn’t show up in the background even though I will be the only person that will ever see the inside of that control panel :-) I have another arcade one up conversion video in process now, it’s going to be a little more extensive and I’m doing some pretty cool stuff to it. Tip for anyone watching this in 2021. That LCD board has an amplified input for sound. You don't need to go out and buy an amp. The little 4 pin port above the aux input that you have plugged in there is the port to connect to. All you need to do is cut off the aux male in on the speakers and connect a 4 pin connector end to it. The cables inside are color coordinated. The red and white is for the audio and the black cables are ground. The two ground pins connect to the 2 inside pins and the red and white connect to the outside. With sound it shouldn't really matter which side you connect them as this isn't like watching a movie with surround sound. The sound is usually flowing through the speakers at the same. With that said, technically the red wire goes on top. If you have an extra joy stick laying around those usually have a 4 pin connector. If the plastic is too big to fit into the 4 pin input, remove the plastic on the sides of the 4 pin connector on the LCD board and just make sure you have conductivity. You could technically just solder the wires directly to it... it is just hard with the pins so close together. Mine is connected this way and pumps out heavy sound. Save yourself the 20 bucks.

Nice video! I bought LED buttons that you linked (the ones from micro center) but they only have two pins. I got the encoder boards for them but they don't register inputs or light up. Am I missing something?
You're not getting any response at all? Do you have the common ground installed for the buttons? One other trick, when you boot the system, have a keyboard plugged in. Then navigate to "setup controllers", and press any button on the panel. See if it acknowledges it at all. (Try this for both controllers). Generally, if I got no response, it was either a ground issue or a power issue. This will eliminate the controller as the issue. If you get any response (IE it says something when you push the button) then you're probably dealing with a ground issue on one or more of the buttons. ****** Now, on that note...…… The ones from microcenter (The two in one controllers) had other issues as well. In fact, the folks at microcenter said that they had never "quite gotten them to work completely" which is why I ended up going with a one controller per joystick.

@@CoreyHectus Ahh gotcha.. Yeah, that encoder card from microcenter was a disappointment.. I had high hopes but it just didn't pan out. I'm going to be doing another arcade1up soon. There are a few changes Ill make with the benefit of hindsight ;)
Wonderful video thanks for posting! Do you have a link for the USB encoders that you used? The one in the description isn't the same, and I like that you can hook up 2 players to each encoder (to help preserver usb ports on the pi). Also, you used all the stock buttons correct?
Michael Glovis I did indeed use all of the stock buttons and controllers. The USB encoder that I tried at first actually came from Micro Center. You can find them online. However, I ran into configuration issues running two controllers on one in coder. Ultimately, I ended up going with one encoder per controller just to alleviate those problems and it cleared them all up. Thank you so much for watching!

Michael Glovis I actually posted some generic “male to female” jumper wires I used. They made the job a ton easier and quicker. Truth be known, there are several usb encoder boards that would would just as well, those are just the first I settled on.

ZachAttack84 Thanks for watching! Absolutely! In fact, in this video, I’m using the stock buttons and joysticks. The only addition or the four extra buttons on the front. The truth is, the stock joysticks are not terrible.

B Muss Have a couple of options. You can go to pins 2 and 9 if you want to run full speed 5 V. If you want to run 3.3 V you can run on pins 1 and 2 but I would not suggest that with a raspberry pie 4.

The amp for sound. You did the audio from the speakers into the amp (red) what did you do with the other I cant really tell what you did with the other.
jjrudy41 I split a two channel cable into left right and to grounds. I ran them from the amp up to a female female connector to the speaker. I use that connector to connect existing mail speaker in to the existing mail of the wire that went down to the amp using a female female barrel connector.
So sort of same question as hdmi monitor from before. If I have successfully set up a pi using an lcd board in my arcade 1 up cabinet, then when I upgrade to the dell 2007 fbc monitor do I just run it straight from the pi to the monitor without an lcd board? Assume that I have the audio already running from the pi to an amp and to speakers that are working! So is there a need to even use and lcd board or can I just get an adapter and go right from the pi to the monitor

@@chriswalden939 You know, I wondered the exact same thing (I believe I mentioned that in this video). Truth is, it shouldn’t matter as you have to calibrate each one individually. I may test that theory on my next A1UP build.
Essentially, it’s a short jumper to the pins on the raspberry. It’s the same basic principle as the nespi cases. I have a more recent video of an upgrade on another arcade one up that you might take a look at. I think I go more into detail and I’ve got links.

Complete Technology Solutions what I did was bought a piece of plywood and cut it out almost to the same shape of the plastic cover that came with it, and then just created my own control panel from there. It came out really good.
Its actually quite simple. From the raspberry you will use a standard Stereo jack to RCA cable. From the amp you will have to strip an rca L/R cable. Then use a standard barrel connector to connect the male stereo end of the cable to the male stereo end of the speakers. Thanks for watching!!
MakaynaKami On some games yes. If there is a game with a save state (Nintendo,SNES, etc) then it will save if there is room on the SD cards. However, arcade games seem to reset when they want to :) Thanks for watching!
Absolutely! You can play pretty much any arcade game, standard handheld console game, and most fighting games. Any games that require more than two buttons you are only using strong kick strong punch. You can play them all, you just don't have full functionality :-)
Reason they need to be wired identical for the 2 sides is a software issue - the Rpi sees both of those USB encoders as identical ( Since they are the same product just on different USB connections) so if they are wired differently the configurations for the software winds up having problems when it sees both as the same type of controller so expects them to have their buttons in the same place and be wired identically ( ie. if one side has joystick down in the place the other has joystick up in the software when the game is running it will sometimes get confused and swap one side or the other so that down becomes up randomly which makes game play weird - SO you want both wired identically to avoid that.
JDFan01 Yeah I figured that out at the end and decided to go with individual controllers for each control. That made the configuration considerably easier :-) I still have those “dual” controller boards though and may attempt to use them in the future. It’s actually funny, I bought those from Micro Center right next to their standup arcade machine. However, the “professional” at their arcade machines did not know if you could run dual controllers off one card. I’ll probably revisit that in the future episode :-) Thanks for watching!
Depending on what you replaced/upgraded.. The equipment I used in the video ran about $125.00 - 150.00 (Give or take a bit).. In the future, I may actually make a joystick and button upgrade standard which would raise the price around $40.00 but it would be well worth it in the long run.

I am getting the TMNT cab soon it's on order. This tutorial has given me some confidence to mod it. However you didn't really show how to hook up the amp with a splitter clearly? any tips? also can you make the streetfighter bezel black ?...is there a way to only have games on the Pi that will use 2 buttons instead of trying many games to see it wont work?
Peter Corfield Hello there and thanks for watching!! Ok, let me break this down by questions: 1. The amp splitter. From the lcd controller board you will come out via the 3.5mm jack. If you use a 3.5mm to RCA cable, you simply plug the RCA connectors directly into the input of the amp. Now, from the speaker (which has a male 3.5mm) you will need a barrel connector which will allow you to connect male to male 3.5mm connections. Then, you can use the same 3.5 mm to RCA connector on the other side (Alternatively, you could actually splice the wires, but that’s not quite as clean). When you get down to the amp, you will have to cut off the left and right connectors, bridge the ground, and then insert left and right. 2. The bezels. You can actually change the entire interface. If you go into the set up folder, under ES themes, you can change the theme of the retropie build. However, I would highly suggest turning bezels off for the “Arcade” games and “Mame” games as the pre-installed monitor in the arcade one up’s are not wide screen. The bezels tend to leak into the game. 3. The games. Absolutely, you can custom build the image, add or remove any games that you would like, and change the interface as much as you would like. In fact, you can have the system set up to come up into the same game list every time you reboot it. If you would like to see a tutorial on how to add and remove games from the image, let me know. It’s not quite as simple as just plugging the micro USB into a computer :-) however, it’s not that hard :-) Again, thanks for watching! I will be doing another arcade one up conversion very soon, but I’m going to make a few interesting changes :-)

That's not a newb question at all my friend! The answer is no. You can go HDMI from the raspberry straight into the monitor. However, You'll need to pull the audio from the raspberry either from an HMDI audio splitter or straight from the 3.5mm jack down to the amplifier. Either way works fine.

Well I tried not to be back but I am, lol. I got the extra buttons in and working so I'm able to play games and back out but...when playing games the A button is not responding. When configuring it reads all buttons pressed including the A button but then in game it the A button will not respond. Any thoughts? It is this way across all 4 USB encoders
Luis Galvan Oh yes, in each individual game there is a configuration file. Have you noticed when you launch them it says press a button to configure. In that game you can set that a button to do whatever you would like it to do. Sometimes, by default, that is set to nothing. Take a peek and see if that may not be the problem.
@@AlternateArmsSD thank you, I got into the configuration screen but there are no options to map buttons - most of the options are for emulators or ROM choice or video choices. I am running the Wolfanoz 32Gb Retropie setup, not sure if that makes a difference.
Luis Galvan Gotcha, I’m not very Familiar with that build. However, I can tell you, some of the people that do those builds build them with a specific controller in mind. That tends to wreak havoc on aftermarket config’s like this. You might try doing a nice clean load of retro pie and then transferring your own rooms. Just see if that works to eliminate the image as the cause.

Next issue, I got the jumper cables and the arcade sticks and all existing buttons are being recognized, but the added button for Select is not being recognized. I have Player 1 side plugged in with USB encoder but no matter what I do it will not recognize that 4th button. Is there a specific pin on the USB encoder board that it needs to get plugged into?
Luis Galvan Not really. When you go into the configure inputs, it tells you to press one button on the joystick to configure it, if you push that player to button is it acknowledge that it exists?

Luis Galvan OK, verify your ground line on that button and verify that you have a good solid connection down to the USB encoder board from that button on the positive side. If it still doesn’t work, switch one of the other buttons out to that control port on the USB in coder and try it. That will eliminate the encoder as the problem
@@AlternateArmsSD I am studying the extra buttons that I ordered from the site you listed and I believe I see the issue. Inside the button there is nothing to trigger the connection to tell the system the button has been pressed. I had went with the Baolian series since they had purple but it definitely looks like a piece is missing from each button that when the button is pressed would trigger the wired connection and thus relay to the system that the button is being pressed.
@@AlternateArmsSD I see the issue and it was my oversight. The site sells the buttons without micro switches so I basically ordered just the buttons not realizing I needed the micro switches. I have gone ahead and ordered them. Thank you again and sorry for 20 million questions.

You will need a total of 4 encoders for the build. There are enough pin outs on it to add the extra two buttons on each controller. Have fun man! I really enjoyed that build!
Absolutely.. The lighted buttons are more expensive but very cool :) The only change I would have made is that the next conversion I will swap out all of the buttons to insure they are all exactly the same color. I agree completely! We needed 14 more buttons to make it "perfect" ( 8 total for each player.. 6 action buttons, a start, and a select) but time and money stalled that. As far as a lighted marquee, it would be a piece of cake. You can power one directly off of the power strip and install an LED light strip. It would look great and allow you to light both the front and the back at the same time. That's another option I had considered. Thanks for watching!
I wouldn't mind at all. I do them for local customers now but I have to tell you.. These things are HEAVY and rather large when assembled. It might cost a tad too much to ship around. I have been considering assembling installation kits though for folks. That might take some of the guesswork out of it. The only real challenge is getting all of the holes drilled in the right spots to maintain the correct symmetry.
How much does this whole setup cost? I looked at all the items in the description and I came up with $230. Is that about right? This is super cool, but I don't think I'm quite ready to spend $230 when I bought the whole cabinet for $200. Maybe I'll buy one piece at a time. Either way, great video! This looks amazing.
2FingerTuesday Hello and thanks for watching!! Well, it depends on the parts. The key is to catch them on sale on Amazon. The encoder boards are relatively universal so you can use any brand as long as it has all the connections that you need. The amplifier is an optional add-on, although, I actually consider it rather imperative. The audio coming out of the raspberry is not very good. The buttons are very inexpensive depending on the brand. I believe when I priced this entire kit out it ran about $120. I will say though, don’t cut corners on the joystick her buttons. You will only create future headaches for yourself. :-)
2FingerTuesday Oh, and if you got the whole cabinet for $200, you stole it :-) I have seen people on UA-cam that have managed to catch those at Walmart on sale for 199 but I have tried and tried to no avail. The lady that bought this one bought it at full retail for 399. However, when you consider that you’re adding the ability to add as many games as you can possibly imagine, it’s definitely worth it :-)

I need help guys, I ordered the USB encoders but I got the newer version. There are two plugs coming off of the joysticks that appear to be 4 pin but the USB encoder boards only have 2pin connectors or 1 5pin connector. 3 of the 2pin connectors are red while others are all white
Luis Galvan On some of these conversions I have had to use a short male to female jumper wire. This allowed me to compensate for some of those strange configurations on encoder boards. You are right, they do change quite a bit. Here’s a picture of the easiest way to solve the problem.

Thank you for the video! Through trials and tribulations, I have everything hooked up. My monitor will not turn on. I plugged the HDMI into a separate monitor and it all works. I’ve made sure everything from the LCD is connected correctly, no luck! PLEASE HELP!
LET GO MY LEGO The monitor will not turn on at all? If you’ve got it powered up, and you press any of those buttons on that small control panel, do you see anything at all on the monitor? If you do, it could just be an HDMI cable problem. If you don’t, it could be a monitor issue.

Welcome! That would depend on if I could locate the cabinet. Typically, I'll use any standard arcade one up. It's pretty easy to re skin these to look like anything that you want them too. Now, for an X men, you're going to want at least 4 controllers. Since you're going to have all of the other games though, you're going to want more than just a jump in attack button. Generally, if people bring me the arcade cabinet, I complete the conversions for around $300. If you complete it yourself, you can probably do it for around a $100 parts if you shop around. I did a video recently on a final fight conversion. That should give you an idea of what you're going to need for each player. In that video, I actually installed a coin accepter as well. Remember, if you do that, you're going to have to have one coin acceptor per player.

Seriously Ive mod my TMNT Arcade with your tutorial and thanks a lot. Got led button and 14 buttons added. Your tutorial is very nice explained the only problem that I got its the damn sound. The sound its too much low I got my amplifier but really don't know how to do the connection and I don't really understand what you've done. By the way thanks again for this tutorial !
Bodomknight Oh yes, that is why I added that amplifier. It was absolutely necessary :-) all you really need to do is run one audio cable from the audio port of the raspberry down to the input of the amplifier and then from the output of the amplifier up to the input of the speakers. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is, but when you do it you will definitely be glad you did :-)
Bodomknight Anytime my friend. Just an FYI, to run the audio cable from the raspberry you will need a male 3.5 mm plug down to a duel RCA male cable. Then, coming back up from the amplifier you will simply strip a dual RCA cable and put it into the outputs of the amplifier. Then, you can run the cable up to the connection going to the speakers and use a small barrel connector to connect the 2 3.5 mm connections together.
Heh that was the real quandary. The "multi button" combat games work but only had strong punch and kick. All of the standard games worked fine. On the next revision, Ill be adding 14 more buttons to complete the build.
I think it ruins the screen, you got the Street Fighter back room kinda ghosting the full screen, just shrinks the size, unless there’s a way to remove that
Joshua Underwood I did find that there were several settings in the screen (adjustable frame that small panel we mounted) that allowed you to change th resolution, frequency, and size. Along with that you can also make adjustments in retropi as well to eliminate the effect. It was a trial and error thing. How did the rest of the build go?
Joshua Underwood Oh and also, Make sure that in retropie you tell it to not use the bezels on arcade games. The bezels tend to overlap on the main screen.

Aaron Stanbridge Hey and thanks for watching! You can actually play the larger combat games but the way the buttons are Matthew only get strong punch straw and Kik. You can still use the combos of those two but only those two. The next time I do this conversion, I’m going to punch in 14 more buttons to make it fully functional. This was built specifically for one client.
Greets! That's not a "hard" shut down. The script causes the PI to go into a sleep mode. Then the switch takes it out of sleep mode when switched again. Thanks for watching!
Rob Towne plug in a set of headphones directly to the output on the LCD controller board. See if you’re getting audio to that point. If you’re not, you need to go into your raspberry configuration and make sure that retro pie is putting audio out Through the HDMI. The decoder board then breaks the audio out to analog. Hypothetically, you could also run a direct analog line from the raspberry down to the amplifier. You will just have to set retro pie to use the analog audio.
The problem with the light games, is that modern LCD monitors cannot use the light gun as they don’t have a blanking signal like an old CRT does. However, there is a company in Europe that puts out a light gun that works on the same principle as a mouse. That will work on them. However, they are a little expensive still.
I just used a Logitech 2.1 kit for 15 euro used.... worked perfectly 👍

Cleanest Arcade 1-UP/Raspberry Pi build I've seen so far!! Well done!! The only things I would change/do, would be to change out the factory speakers for anything better. Mainly since I've heard they blow very easily. I would get and wire up a an outlet for the back so that the plug for power looks cleaner than just a power strip cord sticking through a hole. And lastly customize the Pi's image theme to look just like an Arcade 1-Up theme. But all of these are just nit picks and somethings I would do. Either way, looks amazing and still looks factory!! Very few of these tutorials out there.. Mad props!!

The ‘protective coating’ you removed is plexiglass that is supposed to be there to stop you rubbing the paint off (which will happen if you play it a lot). Its got two pieces of plastic cling on it to stop it getting scratched in transit.

I am so excited to do this! I got my cabinet recently and just need to get the parts to start modding. However, I'm seeing mixed things about the LCD controller board working with the TMNT cabinet. Perhaps some have a newer monitor? Can you confirm what model number was on your TMNT board? Mine says 7633 V01a. Perhaps I can send you a pic and you can confirm the LCD board will work? Bob Bock Hey Bob, I don’t have the board on me it’s actually at my shop. However, I know it was the stock for that came with the cabinet which she did purchase back in October. I would assume that it’s pretty close to the latest revision. I did also notice that you have to make minor adjustments in the settings of the LCD screen as well as retro pie.
@@AlternateArmsSD If anything, I get the board and return it if it doesn't work. I can always use a Firestick or something to make sure it works before modding completely. At least taking off the back panel and the TMNT/LCD board is SUPER simple and something I can do in 10 minutes.

Awesome video so far! I got everything I need and just pulled the controller board and I still am puzzled! Why do I have to flip the on/off switch if it is correct on my NBA Jams arcade 1UP? Also can you please let me know the correct wiring for the single one player USB as I ordered everything you mentioned but, did not get the two player outputs only single player so four boards?
Hello and thanks for watching! You don't need to flip that switch for the NBA jams. It's actually in the correct position. As far as the wiring for the USB encoders, yes indeed one decoder per controller. The USB in coders that I had originally purchased that would put 2 sticks on 1 controller were flaky at best. So definitely use one encoder board per controller. It doesn't matter how you wire them as long as they are all the same ( And even that is not all that important. You can figure all this in retropie anyway).

Jon quick question... I wired all buttons the same however the joystick board when i goto test it does not work???? again I created 2 pin wires for the joysticks so that four, and their are four mode, turbo, etc 2 pin following. Why wont the board recognize when configuring on emulation? this is my set up

Just did this project today and it was fun but a huge pain in the butt. I chose to keep the stock joysticks so I had to literally solder every wire to the a connector and then attach it to the USB encoder boards. The stock joysticks don't have a traditional five pin connector slot like the aftermarket ones.
Very nice! I was able to use male to female jumpers to create a "solderless" connection between the "stock" joystick and the USB encoder boards. The stock ones would work but the connection was very tight and I didn't want to risk them popping off. I'm thinking that, in the future, I'm going to swap out the entire button and joystick assembly to a much for advanced set. The stock equipment is "acceptable" but I'm not sure on the longevity of the stock parts. They are definitely not up to a "lifetime of play". There are a lot of other variables I explored but in the interest of keeping the costs down I stuck with the stock equipment where possible.
I think on the next conversion, Ill upgrade everything. (Including possibly the screen itself)

Its not overly complicated if you've worked with retropi. Its just a step by step process. After you download the roms (Where ever you get them) and load retropi, You simply put the raspberry on the local network and access the files structures through the network and drop the roms into their respective directories. (That sounds more complicated that it actually is).. If I get enough interest, I may do an entire video showing how to setup retropi and adding images. Its a tad geeky though which is why I haven't as of now. :)

Tip for anyone watching this in 2021. That LCD board has an amplified input for sound. You don't need to go out and buy an amp. The little 4 pin port above the aux input that you have plugged in there is the port to connect to. All you need to do is cut off the aux male in on the speakers and connect a 4 pin connector end to it. The cables inside are color coordinated. The red and white is for the audio and the black cables are ground. The two ground pins connect to the 2 inside pins and the red and white connect to the outside. With sound it shouldn't really matter which side you connect them as this isn't like watching a movie with surround sound. The sound is usually flowing through the speakers at the same. With that said, technically the red wire goes on top. If you have an extra joy stick laying around those usually have a 4 pin connector. If the plastic is too big to fit into the 4 pin input, remove the plastic on the sides of the 4 pin connector on the LCD board and just make sure you have conductivity. You could technically just solder the wires directly to it... it is just hard with the pins so close together. Mine is connected this way and pumps out heavy sound. Save yourself the 20 bucks.

Nice video! I bought LED buttons that you linked (the ones from micro center) but they only have two pins. I got the encoder boards for them but they don't register inputs or light up. Am I missing something?
You're not getting any response at all? Do you have the common ground installed for the buttons? One other trick, when you boot the system, have a keyboard plugged in. Then navigate to "setup controllers", and press any button on the panel. See if it acknowledges it at all. (Try this for both controllers). Generally, if I got no response, it was either a ground issue or a power issue. This will eliminate the controller as the issue. If you get any response (IE it says something when you push the button) then you're probably dealing with a ground issue on one or more of the buttons. ****** Now, on that note...…… The ones from microcenter (The two in one controllers) had other issues as well. In fact, the folks at microcenter said that they had never "quite gotten them to work completely" which is why I ended up going with a one controller per joystick.
Never mibd. The Bao Lian LED buttons don't come with any control board or LED.

Wonderful video thanks for posting! Do you have a link for the USB encoders that you used? The one in the description isn't the same, and I like that you can hook up 2 players to each encoder (to help preserver usb ports on the pi). Also, you used all the stock buttons correct?
Michael Glovis I did indeed use all of the stock buttons and controllers. The USB encoder that I tried at first actually came from Micro Center. You can find them online. However, I ran into configuration issues running two controllers on one in coder. Ultimately, I ended up going with one encoder per controller just to alleviate those problems and it cleared them all up. Thank you so much for watching!

Michael Glovis I actually posted some generic “male to female” jumper wires I used. They made the job a ton easier and quicker. Truth be known, there are several usb encoder boards that would would just as well, those are just the first I settled on.

B Muss Have a couple of options. You can go to pins 2 and 9 if you want to run full speed 5 V. If you want to run 3.3 V you can run on pins 1 and 2 but I would not suggest that with a raspberry pie 4.

The amp for sound. You did the audio from the speakers into the amp (red) what did you do with the other I cant really tell what you did with the other.
jjrudy41 I split a two channel cable into left right and to grounds. I ran them from the amp up to a female female connector to the speaker. I use that connector to connect existing mail speaker in to the existing mail of the wire that went down to the amp using a female female barrel connector.
So sort of same question as hdmi monitor from before. If I have successfully set up a pi using an lcd board in my arcade 1 up cabinet, then when I upgrade to the dell 2007 fbc monitor do I just run it straight from the pi to the monitor without an lcd board? Assume that I have the audio already running from the pi to an amp and to speakers that are working! So is there a need to even use and lcd board or can I just get an adapter and go right from the pi to the monitor
Correct, you eliminate the lcd board and run straight into the raspberry.

Essentially, it’s a short jumper to the pins on the raspberry. It’s the same basic principle as the nespi cases. I have a more recent video of an upgrade on another arcade one up that you might take a look at. I think I go more into detail and I’ve got links.

Complete Technology Solutions what I did was bought a piece of plywood and cut it out almost to the same shape of the plastic cover that came with it, and then just created my own control panel from there. It came out really good.

Its actually quite simple. From the raspberry you will use a standard Stereo jack to RCA cable. From the amp you will have to strip an rca L/R cable. Then use a standard barrel connector to connect the male stereo end of the cable to the male stereo end of the speakers. Thanks for watching!!
Do these Raspberries keep high scores on the games? Like the original games would have.
MakaynaKami On some games yes. If there is a game with a save state (Nintendo,SNES, etc) then it will save if there is room on the SD cards. However, arcade games seem to reset when they want to :) Thanks for watching!
Is there a lot of games can you play with the set up you have now without the other buttons?
Absolutely! You can play pretty much any arcade game, standard handheld console game, and most fighting games. Any games that require more than two buttons you are only using strong kick strong punch. You can play them all, you just don't have full functionality :-)
Reason they need to be wired identical for the 2 sides is a software issue - the Rpi sees both of those USB encoders as identical ( Since they are the same product just on different USB connections) so if they are wired differently the configurations for the software winds up having problems when it sees both as the same type of controller so expects them to have their buttons in the same place and be wired identically ( ie. if one side has joystick down in the place the other has joystick up in the software when the game is running it will sometimes get confused and swap one side or the other so that down becomes up randomly which makes game play weird - SO you want both wired identically to avoid that.
JDFan01 Yeah I figured that out at the end and decided to go with individual controllers for each control. That made the configuration considerably easier :-) I still have those “dual” controller boards though and may attempt to use them in the future. It’s actually funny, I bought those from Micro Center right next to their standup arcade machine. However, the “professional” at their arcade machines did not know if you could run dual controllers off one card.
I’ll probably revisit that in the future episode :-)

Depending on what you replaced/upgraded.. The equipment I used in the video ran about $125.00 - 150.00 (Give or take a bit).. In the future, I may actually make a joystick and button upgrade standard which would raise the price around $40.00 but it would be well worth it in the long run.

I am getting the TMNT cab soon it's on order. This tutorial has given me some confidence to mod it. However you didn't really show how to hook up the amp with a splitter clearly? any tips? also can you make the streetfighter bezel black ?...is there a way to only have games on the Pi that will use 2 buttons instead of trying many games to see it wont work?
Peter Corfield Hello there and thanks for watching!! Ok, let me break this down by questions:
1. The amp splitter.
From the lcd controller board you will come out via the 3.5mm jack. If you use a 3.5mm to RCA cable, you simply plug the RCA connectors directly into the input of the amp. Now, from the speaker (which has a male 3.5mm) you will need a barrel connector which will allow you to connect male to male 3.5mm connections. Then, you can use the same 3.5 mm to RCA connector on the other side (Alternatively, you could actually splice the wires, but that’s not quite as clean). When you get down to the amp, you will have to cut off the left and right connectors, bridge the ground, and then insert left and right.
2. The bezels.
You can actually change the entire interface. If you go into the set up folder, under ES themes, you can change the theme of the retropie build. However, I would highly suggest turning bezels off for the “Arcade” games and “Mame” games as the pre-installed monitor in the arcade one up’s are not wide screen. The bezels tend to leak into the game.
3. The games.
Absolutely, you can custom build the image, add or remove any games that you would like, and change the interface as much as you would like. In fact, you can have the system set up to come up into the same game list every time you reboot it. If you would like to see a tutorial on how to add and remove games from the image, let me know. It’s not quite as simple as just plugging the micro USB into a computer :-) however, it’s not that hard :-)

Really noob question, but if I used a monitor with hdmi Input would I still need the lcd board controller?
That's not a newb question at all my friend! The answer is no. You can go HDMI from the raspberry straight into the monitor. However, You'll need to pull the audio from the raspberry either from an HMDI audio splitter or straight from the 3.5mm jack down to the amplifier. Either way works fine.

@@chriswalden939 It will run default at 1920x1080 but can be adjusted to any resolution and format (IE 4X3, 6X9, etc..)

Well I tried not to be back but I am, lol. I got the extra buttons in and working so I'm able to play games and back out but...when playing games the A button is not responding. When configuring it reads all buttons pressed including the A button but then in game it the A button will not respond. Any thoughts? It is this way across all 4 USB encoders
Luis Galvan Oh yes, in each individual game there is a configuration file. Have you noticed when you launch them it says press a button to configure. In that game you can set that a button to do whatever you would like it to do. Sometimes, by default, that is set to nothing. Take a peek and see if that may not be the problem.
@@AlternateArmsSD thank you, I got into the configuration screen but there are no options to map buttons - most of the options are for emulators or ROM choice or video choices. I am running the Wolfanoz 32Gb Retropie setup, not sure if that makes a difference.
Luis Galvan Gotcha, I’m not very Familiar with that build. However, I can tell you, some of the people that do those builds build them with a specific controller in mind. That tends to wreak havoc on aftermarket config’s like this. You might try doing a nice clean load of retro pie and then transferring your own rooms. Just see if that works to eliminate the image as the cause.

Next issue, I got the jumper cables and the arcade sticks and all existing buttons are being recognized, but the added button for Select is not being recognized. I have Player 1 side plugged in with USB encoder but no matter what I do it will not recognize that 4th button. Is there a specific pin on the USB encoder board that it needs to get plugged into?
Luis Galvan Not really. When you go into the configure inputs, it tells you to press one button on the joystick to configure it, if you push that player to button is it acknowledge that it exists?
@@AlternateArmsSD when I press that button it does not acknowledge that it is being pressed, all other buttons for player 1 work and thank you again for helping
Luis Galvan OK, verify your ground line on that button and verify that you have a good solid connection down to the USB encoder board from that button on the positive side. If it still doesn’t work, switch one of the other buttons out to that control port on the USB in coder and try it. That will eliminate the encoder as the problem
@@AlternateArmsSD I am studying the extra buttons that I ordered from the site you listed and I believe I see the issue. Inside the button there is nothing to trigger the connection to tell the system the button has been pressed. I had went with the Baolian series since they had purple but it definitely looks like a piece is missing from each button that when the button is pressed would trigger the wired connection and thus relay to the system that the button is being pressed.
@@AlternateArmsSD I see the issue and it was my oversight. The site sells the buttons without micro switches so I basically ordered just the buttons not realizing I needed the micro switches. I have gone ahead and ordered them. Thank you again and sorry for 20 million questions.

You will need a total of 4 encoders for the build. There are enough pin outs on it to add the extra two buttons on each controller. Have fun man! I really enjoyed that build!

Absolutely.. The lighted buttons are more expensive but very cool :) The only change I would have made is that the next conversion I will swap out all of the buttons to insure they are all exactly the same color. Its a little thing but hey, if its worth doing its worth over doing :) Thanks for watching!

Need more buttons for a few of the players for games that require more buttons, also how would you add the light up marquee to this ?
I agree completely! We needed 14 more buttons to make it "perfect" ( 8 total for each player.. 6 action buttons, a start, and a select) but time and money stalled that. As far as a lighted marquee, it would be a piece of cake. You can power one directly off of the power strip and install an LED light strip. It would look great and allow you to light both the front and the back at the same time. That's another option I had considered.

Would you do this for customers if they buy and ship the arcade to you for mods?
I wouldn't mind at all. I do them for local customers now but I have to tell you.. These things are HEAVY and rather large when assembled. It might cost a tad too much to ship around. I have been considering assembling installation kits though for folks. That might take some of the guesswork out of it. The only real challenge is getting all of the holes drilled in the right spots to maintain the correct symmetry.

How much does this whole setup cost? I looked at all the items in the description and I came up with $230. Is that about right? This is super cool, but I don't think I'm quite ready to spend $230 when I bought the whole cabinet for $200. Maybe I'll buy one piece at a time.

2FingerTuesday Hello and thanks for watching!! Well, it depends on the parts. The key is to catch them on sale on Amazon. The encoder boards are relatively universal so you can use any brand as long as it has all the connections that you need. The amplifier is an optional add-on, although, I actually consider it rather imperative. The audio coming out of the raspberry is not very good. The buttons are very inexpensive depending on the brand. I believe when I priced this entire kit out it ran about $120. I will say though, don’t cut corners on the joystick her buttons. You will only create future headaches for yourself. :-)
2FingerTuesday Oh, and if you got the whole cabinet for $200, you stole it :-) I have seen people on UA-cam that have managed to catch those at Walmart on sale for 199 but I have tried and tried to no avail. The lady that bought this one bought it at full retail for 399. However, when you consider that you’re adding the ability to add as many games as you can possibly imagine, it’s definitely worth it :-)

I need help guys, I ordered the USB encoders but I got the newer version. There are two plugs coming off of the joysticks that appear to be 4 pin but the USB encoder boards only have 2pin connectors or 1 5pin connector. 3 of the 2pin connectors are red while others are all white
Luis Galvan On some of these conversions I have had to use a short male to female jumper wire. This allowed me to compensate for some of those strange configurations on encoder boards. You are right, they do change quite a bit. Here’s a picture of the easiest way to solve the problem.

Orion Fitness Yes it will, however your constrained to the position of the player select. In other words, if you want to play player one, Will always be in that far left position. Complete Technology Solutions I’ve been eyeballing the new golden axe edition that suppose to release this fall because that’s the 4player arcade cabinet that I’ve had on my wish list since I was a kid. I understand that first player has to be Blue but is that the only limitation?

Thank you for the video! Through trials and tribulations, I have everything hooked up. My monitor will not turn on. I plugged the HDMI into a separate monitor and it all works. I’ve made sure everything from the LCD is connected correctly, no luck! PLEASE HELP!
LET GO MY LEGO The monitor will not turn on at all? If you’ve got it powered up, and you press any of those buttons on that small control panel, do you see anything at all on the monitor? If you do, it could just be an HDMI cable problem. If you don’t, it could be a monitor issue.

That would depend on if I could locate the cabinet. Typically, I'll use any standard arcade one up. It's pretty easy to re skin these to look like anything that you want them too. Now, for an X men, you're going to want at least 4 controllers. Since you're going to have all of the other games though, you're going to want more than just a jump in attack button. Generally, if people bring me the arcade cabinet, I complete the conversions for around $300. If you complete it yourself, you can probably do it for around a $100 parts if you shop around. I did a video recently on a final fight conversion. That should give you an idea of what you're going to need for each player. In that video, I actually installed a coin accepter as well. Remember, if you do that, you're going to have to have one coin acceptor per player.

Seriously Ive mod my TMNT Arcade with your tutorial and thanks a lot. Got led button and 14 buttons added. Your tutorial is very nice explained the only problem that I got its the damn sound. The sound its too much low I got my amplifier but really don't know how to do the connection and I don't really understand what you've done. By the way thanks again for this tutorial !
Bodomknight Oh yes, that is why I added that amplifier. It was absolutely necessary :-) all you really need to do is run one audio cable from the audio port of the raspberry down to the input of the amplifier and then from the output of the amplifier up to the input of the speakers. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is, but when you do it you will definitely be glad you did :-)

Bodomknight Anytime my friend. Just an FYI, to run the audio cable from the raspberry you will need a male 3.5 mm plug down to a duel RCA male cable. Then, coming back up from the amplifier you will simply strip a dual RCA cable and put it into the outputs of the amplifier. Then, you can run the cable up to the connection going to the speakers and use a small barrel connector to connect the 2 3.5 mm connections together.

How are you going to play all those games with only 2 buttons?
Heh that was the real quandary. The "multi button" combat games work but only had strong punch and kick. All of the standard games worked fine. On the next revision, Ill be adding 14 more buttons to complete the build.
I think it ruins the screen, you got the Street Fighter back room kinda ghosting the full screen, just shrinks the size, unless there’s a way to remove that
Joshua Underwood I did find that there were several settings in the screen (adjustable frame that small panel we mounted) that allowed you to change th resolution, frequency, and size. Along with that you can also make adjustments in retropi as well to eliminate the effect. It was a trial and error thing. How did the rest of the build go?
Joshua Underwood Oh and also, Make sure that in retropie you tell it to not use the bezels on arcade games. The bezels tend to overlap on the main screen.

Aaron Stanbridge Hey and thanks for watching! You can actually play the larger combat games but the way the buttons are Matthew only get strong punch straw and Kik. You can still use the combos of those two but only those two. The next time I do this conversion, I’m going to punch in 14 more buttons to make it fully functional. This was built specifically for one client.
Don’t you need to power down the Pi just like a computer? powering it off like that could fry the Pi.
Greets! That's not a "hard" shut down. The script causes the PI to go into a sleep mode. Then the switch takes it out of sleep mode when switched again. Thanks for watching!

Rob Towne plug in a set of headphones directly to the output on the LCD controller board. See if you’re getting audio to that point. If you’re not, you need to go into your raspberry configuration and make sure that retro pie is putting audio out Through the HDMI. The decoder board then breaks the audio out to analog. Hypothetically, you could also run a direct analog line from the raspberry down to the amplifier. You will just have to set retro pie to use the analog audio.

Can you mod the arcade1up T2 so it can play a bunch of light gun games?
The problem with the light games, is that modern LCD monitors cannot use the light gun as they don’t have a blanking signal like an old CRT does. However, there is a company in Europe that puts out a light gun that works on the same principle as a mouse. That will work on them. However, they are a little expensive still.
