I loved when you said that last year you were a size up but you know you're likely to be again. Normally when people say not to throw out clothes that no longer fit, they talk about the sizing down instead of up because that would be the 'desirable' part, but hearing you say that made me feel a lot more comfortable with my wardrobe and my no longer fitting clothes and the way my body changes. Thanks, that meant something to me! ^-^
It was really interesting to find out that having a "seasonal wardrobe" is not a universal concept (in countries where the weather changes a lot throughout the year, of course)! I live in Italy and here it's pretty common take one morning/afternoon to do the "cambio degli armadi", lit. "change of the closets", which consists in putting away all of your past season clothes and getting out (...and ironing 🙄) the ones for the upcoming season. I think it might be due to the fact that houses are generally smaller so you couldn't keep all of your clothes on display anyway, so many have to be folded/squeezed inside boxes under your bed, on top of your closet etc. I usually take this chance to organise a swap party with my friends, since some clothes and accessories don't make it back to my wardrobe after the cambio degli armadi 😁
Yes! I’m from the US, and my mom always does this twice a year ♥️ it’s a bit of a pain but often so fun to rediscover clothes that may have slipped your mind off-season! P. S. I’m currently learning Italian and will be adding that phrase to my rotation!!
I live in Colorado in the US, and our seasons are so imprecise that I didn’t even understand the idea of the “the coming of spring” being a measurable concept until I went abroad for a semester. The fact that in some places it just turns warm one day and stays warm… wild. I have worn shorts and sandals in warm sunny weather and had it blizzard the next day. Fall and spring weather is constantly in flux here, so storing away half my closet is extremely impractical when I need to access all of it for over half the year. There’s maybe 2-3 months each in summer and winter that I’m using purely just one half of my closet
@@HannaG123 Oh that's so great! The verb you'd need is "fare", so the complete phrase would be "fare il cambio degli armadi", sometimes "cambio di stagione" (change of season) is used too (:
@@InTheShell8 oh, that totally makes sense! I just started learning at the beginning of this year and really enjoy it. One of my other new favorites is “io cambio l’aria” every time i open up the windows. :) grazie!
As someone who has lost a lot of weight recently, I absolutely agree with keeping favourite clothes that are in a different size. Especially if they’re loves that are irreplaceable. I have a black dress that I absolutely adore, but it was no where near the right size. All these years later I can actually wear the dress! I wouldn’t be able to find anything like it at the shops now, so I am so so glad I kept it. (It’s a vintage style swing dress, with pockets!)
This is so interesting to me Rachel. In my experience things that don't fit me in my closet don't make me feel the greatest. I've felt bad about myself for not fitting into them. But - it totally makes sense to me to hang on to the things you really love so that you will have them when you do fit into them. Im curious...did you keep the dress in your regular closet or did you store someplace else until it fit?
I did this with my favorite jeans! I gained 20lbs early Covid and physically couldn't get them on. No joke, lost 10lb, gained 8 back (meaning I'm 2lb from when they initially didn't fit) and they fit perfectly again. It isn't just the scale, it's fitness and feeling.
It's so nice to finally hear someone say hang onto clothes that don't quite fit. I always have a couple sizes of jeans in my closet because my weight fluctuates, and some days I'm a bit more bloated.
I love how much more sustainable and practical your mindset is here compared to what most advice says. So many sources tell you to be constantly donating/reselling clothes the second they don't interest you, when in reality I've found that I often cycle back to pieces over the years and find new ways to wear them even if they've sat dormant in my closet for a while. Also, lifestyles change! I have so many clothes that haven't gotten their share of sunshine since the pandemic, but I still love them and I don't want to feel pressure to get rid of them according to these arbitrary wardrobe "rules" (like if you haven't worn it in a year toss it). I also just love your practicality about the fact that, yes we have things in our closet we don't love as much as others, but there's still value in trying to wear them. It's cost-effective and healthier for the planet to make that effort, and it builds creativity. So thank you Ellie-Jean!
You have summed up how I feel about this so well here!! Rather than getting rid of clothes that you’ve got bored of, try and make them into something new! I’m so glad this resonated with you, thank you for commenting! ♥️
I really believe this works better for us regular people that arent constantly buying and accumulating, but a lot of youtube comes from people who buy often so they run out of space Or they might be living in urban USA where rent is SO HIGH
I highly recommend rotating your wardrobe like you suggested, I did it this year and it is so true you forget so easily! We rotate toys for our kids because they get bored of them easily, why not our clothes for ourselves?
Yes I love the digital organization!! You’re so right, it’s exactly like Clueless. I have one called Stylebook but I’m curious to check yours- Some people diss on it, but it’s so incredibly helpful! And you can even make folders for inspiration or pieces you’d like to get in the future to later reflect on. You can also organize by so many categories, it can help with shopping smarter (so you don’t get something already similar or you don’t need). I recommend it to everyone to try out!
I love Stylebook! It helps me keep track of everything I have, even whatever’s out of season and packed away. I also use the “Inspiration” section to collect hairstyle ideas, styling hacks, and even a gallery of cosmetics that didn’t work for me so I never buy them again!
I’ve started putting my wardrobe on open wardrobe. It’s really great. Re my own sustainability journey, I’ve marked all my second hand/charity shop purchases under Brand as “Secondhand” then put the Make and where I sourced it from (Vinted, Charity, EBay etc) in the notes. Then when I search for Brand “Secondhand” I can see what % of my wardrobe is secondhand which is a stat that I find helpful. It’s great when you think you need something else in your wardrobe you look on Open Wardrobe and can see that you probably have enough already.
I just want to say - I found your channel this past week and I’ve been obsessed! I’m so glad I did. Honestly, it’s been very helpful for my mental health journey. I’ve been so disconnected from everyone including myself - learning style like this is really helping me get to know and love myself again. And it’s tangible so it’s very grounding. Im trying to tell more girlfriends about this because I think our culture breeds jealousy/shame/unhealthy comparisons with women when we should learn to appreciate the beauty we’ve been givin - your channel totally illustrates that! (I know men have this issue you too, however women generally have more societal pressures when it comes to beauty) I’m an visual artist myself but I always felt like I could use some help with my style. I feel more confident and excited again. Just wanted to let you know, thank you!
This made me feel better for struggling to organize my wardrobe. Im a mom and nursing student with limited time for *feeling myself* Your website has been so fun to sift through, I love your system. This is honestly so great at helping me find self love again and not comparing myself to others!
That’s so true about the seasonal wardrobe. If you don’t like cold weather, it’s fun to get excited about sweater dresses, coats, boots and leg warmers. If you dread warm weather, you might get excited about shorts, blouses, light sweaters and swim suits.
I can't afford your service right now but definitely want to hire you when I can. Just went through my wardrobe and I found I have 3 main styles: elegant vintage, hyper femme, and sexy witch. I'm so confused by what body type I am, when I first saw your videos I thought I would be classic with ingenue factors. I just took an online quiz and the results were mainly dramatic, which contradicts a lot of what I feel looks good on me.
Step 4 🙌🏼 thank you for saying that! I’ve been doing that contrary to what others say especially when it’s a great find, since I thrift aswell, and I am so glad once the items fit. 💗
I just flipped my wardrobe from summer to fall/winter and it felt so nice! It does indeed feel like a new wardrobe! It gave me an opportunity to sift through everything and evaluate if I'm done with a piece or if there is something I need to buy. Finding places to store the out of season stuff is a challenge though.
Love what you said to keep and not throw out clothes because they’re too big. Everyone always says just to throw them out. When really I think we all want to keep them. Love it!
I am enjoying hearing your take on organizing your wardrobe. One thought that comes to me is that it could be beneficial for people to check out some minimalist takes on clothes and seeing what resonates with you more. For me I definitely feel there are some very useful point but I still like to cpmbone them with a more minimal approach. Thanks again!
Your channel is amazing!! I'm finally starting to get why there are pieces that I love but hate to wear and have learned to accept that I'll never love them on me but in a way that inspires me to ponder why I love that clothing and try to find that thing in pieces that actually look good on me, not just in the closet
because i primarily dress by color (i love color sm), i’ve been organizing my clothing by color on a single rail w/ micro sections in order of pants, dresses/skirts, and then tops/thin jackets; and then i put all my jackets at the end, my bags and belts at the other, and extra accessories like scrunchies/hairbands/scarves on a wall next to the rack for display so i can see everything at once all the time. i live in a place where i get all four seasons, but i’m such a autumn dresser, and it pretty switches to autumn, WINTERRRRR, (micro spring), and SUMMER. so i’ve just kept everything out and taken it as an opportunity to downsize so that i’m mindful about buying more clothing. my room is a mess again, but having all my lovely colorful clothing on display is such a ray of sunshine in my room.
I live in the mountains of Peru, and here we only have 2 seasons - rainy and dry. Indoor heating and cooling doesn't exists, so we have to dress with a lot of flexibility for varying temperatures throughout the day. The day could be hot enough to wear a T-shirt, but then we can get caught in a hailstorm. It's crazy!
I recently got one of those pretty bamboo racks from Amazon to display my in season clothes. (The closet in my bedroom is unreasonably small). That was one of the easiest ways to tell if I needed to get rid of something. If I was hesitant to put it on display, I thought, why am I putting it on display on my body? I got rid of so many filler clothes. Also, figuring out the colors for my season and sorting by colors made some things stand out that clearly did not go with anything. Green is my favorite color, but that chartreuse cardigan stood out like a sore thumb against all the deep, earthy, Autumnal greens and made me realize it didn't go with anything else in my wardrobe. Like you, Ellie, I have a couple of red things that I just cannot part with even though it's not really my color. Organizing my wardrobe by color gives the illusion of someone who has their whole life together. It's a great feeling even if it isn't entirely true. 😆
Thank you for some great tips here! I decided to try the open wardrobe app, it'll be helpful. I find myself wishing it was a social media site too! I quit Instagram, but what I miss is seeing other people's style and sharing mine.
Love your videos Ellie. Love your advice. Gosh I feel good after a good organising session! Also, like someone already mentioned the coral-pink is gorgeous on you, and I love your nails as well! ♥️🥰
I just recently downloaded Open Wardrobe & I love it! I’ve been following you on here for a bit now & was so happy to see you on there! Also, loved seeing your organization. This video was inspiring!! Thank you! 💕
I just moved from one room to another and I'm dreading taking my clothes out of their boxes 😂 The winter clothes are already out of the way but everything else needs work and I also have to check how things fit.
loved this video my fav part was not to throw away small/big items that don't fit anymore. because yes they will one day. i really regret some stuff i gave away years ago..but i feel better when i think someone else got to wear them :) now i just store them in the very top unseen part of my wardrobe. Off to openwardrobe to sort out my mess haha
Also if you have lost a lot of weight and keep your old bigger clothes you can make new things from them very easily! Less you throw away is better for the environment 😉
And it helps to solve a huge issues for us plus size people: zero size youtubers buying plus size clothes to make videos and us being left with barely anything to trift or buy second hand 😫
How I decide what to wear….. if my legs are smooth i choose shorter items, if time to wax i wear longer items. I try to wear skirts or dresses whenever i leave the house. And the base of my choice is if I’m going to be walking a lot - flat shoes or just going to one single place then i can wear heels. If loose skirt i choose tight top, with my trousers usually slim fitting i wear my looser tops. I wear a hat every single day so have at least 10 straw hats, some caps and bucket hats too.
Except for the legs thing, since I never shave, I think just like you!!!! I even realized lately I tend to pair loose tops with tight bottoms or vice versa :)
I like how everyone in the comments has their own way of packing wardrobe and they all make sense for them 😊 It’s meant to get our lifes easier, and that’s different for everyone I personaly have summer clothes and rest of the year clothes. Rest of the year is nice, and then summer is SURVIVAL And i have two categories for tops: number one is everyday tops and special occasion tops Number two is: do i want to shave my airmpits for that one or not (and no i don't judge others for not shaving, just myself, and i'm working on it) It has made living in summer significantly bearable - which is great because have i meantioned how much i am uncomfortable in summer? I get uncomfortable in temepratures over 25 celsius. Summer here in Serbia is nowadays 40 …
It would be amazing to have a "trousers/shorts" for the body types, as a romantic most suggestions are for dresses and skirts and they're just not me at all, I don't feel comfortable, myself or like I belong in dresses and skirts, but I don't want to just live in jeans. It would be so, so helpful it'll there were more "trouser" related content if that's possible?
I think this really happens in places where walk-in closets are not a thing. I have a big wardrobe from floor to ceiling but I can’t easily access the top shelves - so theyre treated as storage now 😅
haha The perfect gift for Ellie-Jean's mom? Velvet hangers! I think EJ should turn that spare room into a walk-in closet with a corner bed for company since overnight visitors aren't as frequent as getting dressed every day ;)
When you actually have only 45 items in your wardrobe (outerwear not included) 😁you can skip alle these steps! My wardrobe is organised into categories: shoes, bags, tops, dresses, jeans/trousers, knitwear, skirts/shorts. It takes 5 minutes to get dressed.
I needed this because I'm going to be getting out my fall clothes soon!! Thank you!!! (Also, your accent is just so cool. Obviously I'm an American, but still. XD)
You are organising your wardrobe wrong Try this - favourites should be in view (everything else - like clothes from other seasons should be packed away) APP - Open Wardrobe
I’ve narrowed down my style roots to four: moon, sun, earth, and fire but I can’t decide if I am more delicate or strong. I feel like I am both at different times
My closet now is the size of a broom cupboard ☹️Even though the ceilings are pretty high, its so cramped! Just my chunky boots and capes are up there (yes, capes lol). I ended up getting a bed with storage drawers underneath for off season clothes. A lot of my clothes are black or dark moody colors so I organize by sleeve length to see things better ;)
I understand that being a stylist might mean you need more clothes, but I was in shock at you saying you have about 350 garments. I have 2 drawers for ALL of my clothes. Drawer 1 - lingerie, socks, gloves, scarves, accessories. Drawer 2 - all my skirts, shirts, dresses, sweaters, jackets, coats. I think I have about 20 garments in this drawer. I'm a very tall Soft Dramatic Dusk Summer. I am warm natured, and live in a 4 season climate where it snows/freezes every year - just south of Canada. I tend to wear deep plum/eggplant and silver as my primary/basic colors. I have some brown, some garnet red, and a bit of pop blueberry as additional colors. I look at my calendar so I know all meetings/activities/appointments. I look out the window to see the weather. I open the drawer to pick out my outfit, and done. My clothes all work together and are cohesive to each other and to me. (My entire house is @200 sq ft, and does not have a single closet.)
The gold hair look so good on you
Putting things together in the house is good
I find this video very helpful. Thanks alot
Oh my gosh 😳 I can't believe I've been arranging my wardrobe wrongly, thank you for this beautiful knowledge... I'm definitely a new one 💪🏽🥰
I love your backdrop!!!
Organizing a wardrobe can be quite stressful. Thank you for the tips given
Very nice, I love to try this out
The pink look so good on u
Nice tips on arrangements
This was so helpful.
Thank you so much, this helped alot
I like how everyone in the comments has their own way of packing wardrobe and they all make sense for them 😊
It’s meant to get our lifes easier, and that’s different for everyone
I personaly have summer clothes and rest of the year clothes. Rest of the year is nice, and then summer is SURVIVAL
And i have two categories for tops: number one is everyday tops and special occasion tops
Number two is: do i want to shave my airmpits for that one or not (and no i don't judge others for not shaving, just myself, and i'm working on it)
It has made living in summer significantly bearable - which is great because have i meantioned how much i am uncomfortable in summer? I get uncomfortable in temepratures over 25 celsius. Summer here in Serbia is nowadays 40 …
It would be amazing to have a "trousers/shorts" for the body types, as a romantic most suggestions are for dresses and skirts and they're just not me at all, I don't feel comfortable, myself or like I belong in dresses and skirts, but I don't want to just live in jeans. It would be so, so helpful it'll there were more "trouser" related content if that's possible?
Thanks for this video it’s so much useful ❤️
That's lovely to hear! :)
I love your mood of dressing
I think this really happens in places where walk-in closets are not a thing. I have a big wardrobe from floor to ceiling but I can’t easily access the top shelves - so theyre treated as storage now 😅
Thanks for the tips
haha The perfect gift for Ellie-Jean's mom? Velvet hangers!
I think EJ should turn that spare room into a walk-in closet with a corner bed for company since overnight visitors aren't as frequent as getting dressed every day ;)
Love the app! You have helped me so much! Thank you!
Thanks for the information
This is a great lesson
This is so great
Amazing video 🥰
I needed this because I'm going to be getting out my fall clothes soon!! Thank you!!! (Also, your accent is just so cool. Obviously I'm an American, but still. XD)
I actually love compliments about my accent - thank you so much! I’m so glad you found this helpful ☺️☺️
I love this video
This is so cool
YES to the Clueless reference!!!!
I can totally relate to the „before“ 😂
I think an open wardrobe would be great for me, but it is visually so distracting
This is educative.
Wow didn't know this before now
I think it's good to keep some out of size clothes too. Even if it's a few pounds and you want something more relaxed for hormonal days.
You are organising your wardrobe wrong
Try this - favourites should be in view (everything else - like clothes from other seasons should be packed away)
APP - Open Wardrobe
you look splendid in that pink🥺 also you remind me of the singer from Cannons. and as always every upload of yours is so useful! ty
Thank you so much, I’m so glad you find my videos helpful ☺️☺️
Thanks
I’ve narrowed down my style roots to four: moon, sun, earth, and fire but I can’t decide if I am more delicate or strong. I feel like I am both at different times
Oh my
So interesting thanks
You're just the best
Nice one
My closet now is the size of a broom cupboard ☹️Even though the ceilings are pretty high, its so cramped! Just my chunky boots and capes are up there (yes, capes lol). I ended up getting a bed with storage drawers underneath for off season clothes. A lot of my clothes are black or dark moody colors so I organize by sleeve length to see things better ;)
Thanks I like this video
Awesome
Very nice
Wonderful
Very impressive 👍
How would you style a romantic for winter? I love flowy dresses but tend just always wear a boxy jacket bc I get cold to easily
Amazing
I really like this video! PD: where is that notebook from? I love it!
Lovely
It's great to stock dress though
