I have ALOT of Great memories of listening to this with my Mom,Aunt Bertha and my Sister on Sunday nights and playing cards while the funny songs played and OH Thanks Dr.D for all those Great times!!!!
I used to wake up at 11o’clock on Sunday evenings, hit record on my tape deck, and 45 minutes later when the side was full the noise from my machine turning off would wake me up. I would then flip the tape over, hit record and do that every 45 minutes until the show was over about three hours later. I would then spend the whole week listening to Sunday night’s episode of the Dr. Demento show eagerly awaiting the next show. I never found a friend throughout middle or high school that had heard of it, so I’d play the silly songs for them whenever I could. Great childhood memories.
I used to record the show as heard on radio stations in Rochester & Buffalo, trading tapes with a pal who lived in Toronto. My daughter confiscated my Dr. Demento CDs, along with those from allied artists (eg-Tom Lehrer, Stan Freberg, etc.). She picked up that gene in me.
I remember sneaking into my brother's room to hear The Dr. Demento show. He was the one that had a radio. I could stay as long as I didnt laugh too loud!!
Ha,still have the double cassette album of his radio show collection, ool. Seen him with Weird AL in 1985,I think, lol,on tour in Denver at a club called Mardi Gras in the Suburb of Aurora. Greatest show I ever saw, including the videos you see here,Fish Heads, actually ll of it,Bambi was the first one, lol. And Weird Als show was simply fantastic, the songs you know played the first time then, wow,it was so fun! God,I miss the 80s,was the best decade ever!
There were some funny records he played on Sunday nights while i listened to quietly on my boom box next to my bed with the lights out . I could not sleep until it was over. I payed for it by getting up late for school sometimes , but it was a good way to end the weekend.
Dr. Demento was the first place I ever heard Brown Shoes Don't Make It; oddly, its syndication reached to 66 WNBC in NYC, so I was a regular listener. Thank you, Doctor-wherever you are; you made my childhood bearable.
One of the earliest movie rentals in my youth was Godzilla 1985, and it began with that Bambi film. I don't remember one thing from the rest of the movie but I that intro has stuck with me forever!
Back when we were in High School , me and my buddy went rabbit hunting every Sunday out by Little Lake , & we'd listen to Doctor D. for the entire 3 hour long drive home.
I use to RECORD Doc D had many many tapes of his show. ONE day on a US Navy ship had my BOOM box on the fantail of the USS DD-965 and the XO comes out looks at my box then looks at the box bent over removed the tape and throws it over the side. I get up put another Doctor D tape in and hit play and he walked away.
Quite a few Weird Al fans in the audience. The only way you knew of Weird Al in 1983 was from the Dr. Demento Show. I've always been a fan of David Letterman, but there's one thing that disappoints me about him. He has never had Weird Al on as a guest.
Strange but interesting point, and odd in it's own way. I could have easily seen the Weird Al of any of the first three albums fitting in nicely here. Especially when he covered Euday L. Bowman's "Twelfth street rag" and "We're not gonna take it." on "Dare to be Stupid" it might sound like I'm trying to be funny myself, but the gap between this and say, "Super Dave" is... merely "Superficial" ...perhaps it was a publishing/copyright type issue.
Star Trekkin, Fish heads, Existential Blues, Dead Puppies, Pencil neck geek...This shit brought back 40 year old memories from elementary school and I can't even remember what I ate yesterday.
Waaaaaaaaay back, when Letterman was still 15.9993% (or there abouts) sane. As the years went by, that percentage dried up; by 2000, he is America's Numero Uno Chiflado.
I grew up listening to the Dr. Demento show. Brings back memories. First time I heard of Al Yankovic.
That's because Dr. Demento was the first show Weird Al heard Weird Al on the air! Barry played Al's homemade tapes on his show in the mid 70s
Same here!
I still have my cassettes! In 2020!
Me too on WLUP Chicago. I think it came on after Larry King, and before Dr. Ruth... Which, as a
10-13 year-old, I always made sure to stay up for 😎
I taped it too, do you remember the episode on recording in the bathroom?
Dr Demento, National Lampoon and Monty Python totally messed up my brain and I am eternally grateful
My childhood rests here.....Love ya Doctor Demento.
yes, my childhood in this clip. Love the Dr Demento Show.
Bart Simpson in anguish: How can you say that people?! He scares me! Ay carumba!
I have ALOT of Great memories of listening to this with my Mom,Aunt Bertha and my Sister on Sunday nights and playing cards while the funny songs played and OH Thanks Dr.D for all those Great times!!!!
Best catalog of music!

Thank you Dr D for helping fall asleep in school on Mondays!
Ha! Exactly!
I thought it was just me
Letterman thought to himself; "one day I will grow a beard like that!"
Now he looks like Santa claus.
He needs to shave that so badly lol

Gary, thanks for posting this-I've been a huge fan of Dr.Demento since the mid-70's.

Lmao no kidding, my girlfriends and I did a karaoke of homecoming queens got a gun at the 4th grade talent show. Thanks Dr. Demento.
Classic. I loved listening to Dr. Demento. childhood
1070 AM late nights ..... long ago and far away .
Loved listening to him in Daytona Beach in the mid 70's, Sunday nights. Demento came on after the National Lampoon Radio Hour. The best of times.
Letterman was overwhelmed, Dr, took over the show!
I love his voice on the radio. I am almost 50 n last I heard his voice, was when I was 14?
Thank you for being a part of who I am now.
Dr.Demento is the radio fan’s educational advisor of high quality for great entertainment!!!
Only a legend goes on Letterman and plays Bambi Meets Godzilla (and then shows us his awesome record collection).
I Grew Up Listening to This on The Radio

Syndicated radio from this era will never be replaced. It's from a time where people were actually creative and interesting.
You think disco and Led Zeppelin and ranch dressing were interesting?
I loved Dr Demento :)
Before everyone was offended by everything- Dr Demento !!!
Back when we were in High School , me and my buddy went rabbit hunting every Sunday out by Little Lake , & we'd listen to Doctor D. for the entire 3 hour long drive home.
Sunday night in Phoenix 1979-81 when I was in high school are some great memories 📻
This is how good days should be!!!
Thank you for sharing this.
Back in the day I recorded Dr. D on my cassette. I memorized "The Smoke Off" thanks to him. Great to recite around campfires. "Wind up you radios"!
I would recognise his voice from a million miles away
He was so nervous im suprised he didnt stroke out
Listened to him every Sunday night, with a transistor Radio Shack radio under my pillow
I miss this man!!!!!!😍
You can still hear him at DrDemento.com
He's only 42 here but he looks the same he does today
Bambi meets Godzilla.. HILARIOUS!!! Wow!.. Some funny stuff.
Living in North Carolina in the 90s there was a A.M. radio show on sundays locally that I listened to that was very inspired by dr demento lol
David had no Clue!
The stomping foot looked like the one, from the cover from the Where the Wild Things Are book.

I missed seeing a show on that tour by one day (was moving to another city to start a new job)
Bambi meets Godzilla, classic
They didn't have a better quality copy of Bambi Meets Godzilla? Dang.
Scott Mercer that wasn’t 1080?

Classic!
Bambi vs Godzilla looks like it was animated on a stack of napkins.
I miss Dr Dimento.
.,•°*MP*°•,.
He on line now. Go to DrDemento.com.
I went to high school with Marv.
KMET Los Angeles , Sunday nights...
i am currently living in the city dr. demento is allegedly born in.
Didn't know Jello Biafra ever had a beard.
By today's standards he's normal
Before the internet, when being UA-cam was a job..
Star Trekkin!
Is this the plain old heeby geebies or just "Existential Blues?"
i'd heard about Bambi vs. Godzilla for years.i thought it was a myth!
They would play this sometime between movie's on First Choice movie network
Songs he plays aren't real funny, but Dr. Demento himself always is entertaining.
David Letterman NOT into it. Kinda rude to the Doctor.
Scott G You must be a Ditto Head, among other things.
Rick hodge would play some of his stuff on Sunday night funnies
the first time I ever heard weird al Yankovic was on Docter Ds show (LIVE) Another one rides the bus.
Bart Simpson’s mortal enemy other than Sideshow Bob.
Dave Letterman with more Hair.
Bambi meets Godzilla is the best
How does anyone collect 150,000 records...
Perseverance?
😜
Boot to the Head!
Star Trekkin, Fish heads, Existential Blues, Dead Puppies, Pencil neck geek...This shit brought back 40 year old memories from elementary school and I can't even remember what I ate yesterday.
And another one for the geek
I was greatly influenced by the wackiness I heard on the Dr Demento show every Sunday night.
Should have been roasted Bambi then Zilla eats good" Yum" ok" I'll stop" ok?"
Fish Heads!
john wohlf the rolly polly ones? Eat them up yum!
Dr Pimento
