  • Others protesting book bans in schools and libraries across America have held up signs in protest. Grace Linn held up a quilt. The 101-year-old created the quilt that was displayed as she squared off against the Martin County School Board for banning 84 books. According to officials, the ban was the district’s effort to comply with a Florida Department of Education directive as part of the implementation of House Bill 1467.
Here, Linn talks to PEN America about the importance of learning history so we don't repeat it. She is featured in the new documentary "The ABCs of Book Banning."

I listened to my grandparents and my mother talk about WWII. What it was like to live through it and what defeating the Nazis meant to the world. These stories need to be told to our youth. Our school boards, educators, and parents need to stand up for the truth to be told.
This woman should be applauded for having the guts to stand up for democracy and tell the truth. Her quilt should be proudly displayed as a special exhibit that makes the rounds at libraries.

What a brave and wise woman to have the guts and backbone to speak out against this atrocious State policy. We ALL need to step up to defend and protect not only books, but our very democracy.

All books, though. Save every single one regardless of political orientation. ⚖️
